it is 6:00 on this saturday, october 10th. i am andrea grymes. >> the day's top stories are straight ahead. but first, vanessa murdock is here with a look at the forecast. this week has been all over the place. >> it will feel close to summer again on monday but today it's going to feel a lot like fall. it's going to be cool and crisp with a stiff breeze. so talking about this morning, wind chills in the 30s for some. and tomorrow morning we will likely have patchy frost. yes, quite a different scene today but beautiful with bright skies, just on the cool side. babylon starting your day off at 52. on the vortex satellite and radar picture, not all seeing crystal clear skies yet but the general trend is clearing and leading to very sunny skies this afternoon. 9:00 a.m., it's 55 and sunny. and by noon, 59. still mostly sunny and breezy, 3:00. and 65 degrees, that's as warm

mostly sunny and then falling back to 57 by 9:00 tonight under clear skies. a cool start to the weekend. a chilly night. and tomorrow we start warming back up. we will talk about the next chance for rain in the full forecast. back to you. >> thank you. new this morning, police are looking for the men behind a jewelry heist in central park. >> it's second armed robbery this week. ilana gold join us live with the details. >> reporter: the robbery happened here on west 57th street in the middle of the day. police say the suspects got away with dozens of expensive watches and they want you to see this video. cameras capture the two men walking into the jewelry store at 1:00 yesterday. this was at a busy time in a high-traffic area. police tell us one suspect pulled out a gun and demanded watches from the workers. and then the two suspects handed them bags and forced the

employees to fill them with merchandise. the pair got away with 40 to 50 watch, a number they call significant. in total, they're worth more than $70,000. again, this is the second armed robbery in the area this week. and police are look for this suspect in connection with a hold-up at the plaza hotel on 5th avenue, a block and a half away. it happened on monday. detectives say he targeted a currency exchange business inside the famed hotel and got away with more than $5,000. at this point, it's unclear if this is linked to the hold-up at the watch store but that's something police say they are investigating. if you have information on the robbery, police want you to call them right away. ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. a family on staten island is in mourning after a teenager died. he fell down an elevator shaft of an abandoned building. police say the 16-year-olds with his friends when he fell seven floors down the shaft yesterday.

staten island hospital which has been vacant for 36 years. >> it's very dangerous. nobody should be in the there. >> they should have security. have a guard or have someone patrol the area. but as soon as school is out, this is where people hang out. >> he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. now to a developing story out of california. initial reports indicate nine construction workers have been injured after a bridge collapse late last night. it happened at a construction zone about 50 miles south is east of los angeles. no word yet on the condition of those workers. president barack obama met with families mourning the loss of loved ones killed after a gunman opened fire at a community college in oregon. the meeting came hours after two campus shootings stunned students in arizona and texas. >> reporter: the moment marine one landed, the president was met with protesters who say he rushed to pope benedict lit size the tragedy by pushing a gun control agenda.

>> the announcement about gun control and the way that coming off, the first thing he said, instead of saying i'm sorry to the families, i think it was just wrong. >> reporter: mr. obama met privately with families grieving their loved ones following the mass shooting at umpqua community college. the gunman shot ask killed nine people before turning the gun on himself. >> i have strong feelings about this because when you talk to these family, you are reminded that this could be happening to your child. >> reporter: early yesterday, two more college shootings unfolded. first at northern arizona university where police say a freshman shot four other students, killing one of them. 18-year-old steven jones is being held on $2 million bond. >> sir, you have four charges against you. you are charged with first degree scheme or device three

felony and three council of aggravated assault. >> reporter: later southern texas university was put on lockdown following a shooting there, one person killed and one person still hospitalized. in may, texas passed a law that will allow anyone with a concealed hand gun license to carry a weapon on campus. >> this means the wild, wild west. some shoot-outs maybe. that's what that says to me. >> reporter: the texas shooting happened at an off-campus housing facility parking lot. police are questioning two people and searching for a third. back here at home, a suffolk county family hit head- on twice n by an alleged drunk driver. it was all caught on camera. >> move up. [ screaming ] >> you can hear people screaming in the backseat as the bystander barely made it out of the way. we spoke to the family.

as she and her two girls ages 7 and 4 pulled up to this stoplight on thursday afternoon. and you can see the 53-year- old's suv in the middle of the street. she runs over a sign as her car jumps the median and plows head- on into the van. >> i thought maybe she just drove to the wrong way. and i didn't even prepare, like she's going to hit me. >> reporter: she says a good samaritan jumped in and tried to get the disoriented driver. >> put your car in park. now. >> reporter: the video instead shows her put the car in reverse, back up through rush hour traffic and then put it in drive, almost running over the woman who tried to help. and then head-on again into the mini van. >> it was -- i couldn't even

i thought we might die. i was thinking, like, i could lose my girls too. they'll die. >> reporter: you can hear her frantic screams and her children's terrified cries as her mini van is pushed backward, showing no sign of stopping. she called her husband the first time he was hit and he listened on the other end as they were hit again. >> they're all screaming and then silence. so this moment, i thought, just i lost them. >> reporter: thankfully they were okay. the driver was arrested for dwi and taken to the hospital. accident, she knows it could have been devastating and hopes it's a lesson learned to anyone influence. >> don't do it. don't drink and drive. >> she was taken to the

yesterday she was arraigned and returned to her home. a little girl in new jersey is recovering after a dog attacked her on the way to the school. the 5-year-old has stitches in her head and bite marks all over her arm. she was walking with her father when a dog suddenly attacked yesterday morning. the father tried to protect her and was also hurt. >> i just come from my house. not even five seconds, i see the dog come from the next house flying to us. >> the owner looked at the cop and says, look, do the something. >> the owner did try to stop the attack. the police officer then shot and killed the dog. a new jersey transit could be forced to shut down at the end of the year due to safety concerns. the agency says it will not meet the federal deadline to install positive train control, a system designed to prevent derailments and collisions. lawmakers are pushing for a three-year extension of the deadline now set for the end of this year. without one, they say it is

>> for every one they destroy on camera, thousands line their coffers. >> militants have destroyed several monuments including two famous temples. a woman arrested on federal charges in atlanta is now here in new york where she is set to appear in court. federal authorities say the 50- year-old told an undercover dea agent she wanted to buy more than 2,000 guns for -- guns for associates in iran. she is scheduled to appear friday in court in brooklyn. a halloween display in new jersey is kicking up controversy. instead of ghosts and goblin, this shows blood, gore and terrorists. some residents say it's just un- american. >> reporter: many residents of butler, new jersey are eager for halloween, windows glowing orange with fake spider ones

he put up the display on september 11th. after getting threats and losing some items to thieve, he installed cameras. >> we didn't mean to offend anybody. >> i thought it was anti- american. >> reporter: and some neighbors stopped by with advice that he put up a pristine american flag and a sign explaining his pro- american intentions but others are telling him, just take it all down. cbs 2 news. >> after we left the home, the homeowner did take the display down but he tells us he will bring it back on halloween day. time now is 6:17. feeling a little fallish today. vanessa murdock is here with a look at the forecast. good morning. >> good morning. it's going to be very much a fall feel this morning. it's chilly and breezy. wind chills are in the 30s to start off. but it's going to be a bright day and that should help to warm you up.

let's go ahead and go live outside. 54 degrees and partly cloudy skies. excuse me, 53 degrees. and north winds at 10 miles per hour. and the weather headline, fall feel today, cool breeze to start things off. but then with sun-filled skies this afternoon, it should feel more comfortable and not just today we keep the sun in place, it's tomorrow as well. and tomorrow morning however, we expect some patchy frost. it's going to get that cold tonight that tomorrow morning you may see some frost on the pumpkins. here's' a look at the temperature trend, a big drop today. yesterday it was 78 degrees, felt like summer before the rain set in. and the rain was courtesy of a cold front and that knocked us back down to reality, 65 degrees the anticipated high. and tomorrow 69. monday, 7 4 . so you will see this continue to climb here. it's going to be a beautiful stretch ahead. and i bet that areas known for

will be packed this weekend, peaking at this point in time. and then toward later october, the lower hudson valley through central new jersey and long island. and early november southern new jersey start to peak. going to be a beautiful weekend for pumpkin picking, apple picking or maybe just chilling out at home. live on the vortex satellite and radar picture. what we see are the clouds making their exit. clear skies building in. so the front is moving out. and high pressure is taking hold. thes and going to be a lovely weekend as a result. and big area of of high pressure but note the winds. cool wind being pumped in from the north. so not warm today but it will be feeling like fall, just as it should. and into the day tomorrow, a beautiful finish for the climbing. columbus day.

a warm holiday to end the extended weekend. today, mostly sunny, and cooler at 56 degrees. and winds at 5 to 15 miles per hour today but gusts as high as 25 miles per hour. and overnight tonight, clear and cool, 50 in the city. possible upper 40s. but for areas north and west, we're talking 30s overnight and that's why patchy frost is possible. and tomorrow it's a great finish to the weekend. 69 degrees with a whole lot of sunshine. and now we take you to the columbus day forecast, it's 74 degrees with sun as well. and tuesday brings in the next best chance for rain but it's a slim chance with a high of 72. and after that, it's back to seasonable temperature, 66 on wednesday with a mix of sunshine and clouds. and more clouds around on friday with a high of 63 degrees. ultimately, this next week's forecast is a stunner. >> tough to keep the wardrobe straight. >> it is. >> seems like it's warm one day and cold the next.

sunny. that is seasonable. by 6:00, 60 and mostly sunny. i'll have the full forecast coming up. and we will talk warmer weather for the weekend. back to you. >> thank you. new this morning, police are looking for the men behind a jewelry heist near central park. >> the it's the second armed robbery in the area just this week. ilana gold is live from midtown with the details. >> reporter: investigators are calling these suspects braisen. they say they walked into this jewelry store in the middle of the day and took off with more than $70,000 worth of merchandise. we want to show you this surveillance video from on west 57th 9 street. surveillance cameras captured the men in baseball caps walk in at 1:00 yesterday afternoon. this a high-traffic area at a busy time of day. police say one suspect pulled out a gun and demanded watches from the workers and then the two suspects handed them bags and forced the employees to fill them up with merchandise.

the violence between security forces and rebels. so far, no group has claimed responsibility. and also out of california, initial reports indicate nine construction workers have been injured after a bridge collapsed late last night. it happened at a construction zone about 50 miles southeast of los angeles. no word yet on the condition of the workers. a family on staten island is in mourning. a 16-year-old died after falling down the elevator shaft of an abandoned billing. >> excuse us. >> reporter: investigators say the 16-year-old was with his friends when he fell seven stories down an elevator shaft at this former hospital that's been abandoned for the past 36 years. it all happened around 4:30 friday afternoon. >> it's very dangerous. nobody should be be in there. >> reporter: he says when firefighters arrived on the scene, they found signs to of a forced entry.

first floor but appears as though some people had breeched one side to get in. >> reporter: this was one staten island hospital which closed the doors in 1979. it's unclear what the boy and his friends were doing at the delap -- at the building but other teens say it's a popular place to hang out. >> they're doing drugs. >> they should have security. have a guard or have someone patrol the area. but as soon as school is out, this is where people hang out. >> reporter: it's all too easy to the gain access to this facility. we found multiple entry points across the hospital. cbs 2 news. a masked robber tide up some shoppers and employees inside a long island store, he is still on the loose. the robbery has led police to patrolling on horse back and in cars. it happened thursday. detectives say two customers

and two store clerks were tied up there. the suspects stole wallet, phones and cash. police say the suspect may be linked to another robbery from monday as well. the american hailed as a hero for helping stop a terror attack in france continues to recover after getting ad in california. spencer stone's condition was upgraded from serious to fair yesterday at uc davis medical center in sacramento. the 23-year-old was stabbed three times during a late night attack near a bar. a witness says stone had been trying to break up a fight between a man and a woman at the time. stone is expected to make a full recovery. police say they are fill investigating the incident and no arrests have been made. a 7-year-old brooklyn boy has set out to thank the city's 35,000 police officers and today he is heading to the 61st precinct. every saturday, zach visits a different police precinct in the city with his mom to do just that, it started after two nypd officers were killed in

gunman goes after the children. police originally thought it was a business deal gone bad but then the investigation took 48 hours has this story. >> reporter: it was a crime that shocked the rich, quiet, wealthy community. a wealthy business woman, 54, and her ex-husband brad, age hillside mansion. >> been shot multiple times in the face. >> reporter: jack works for the los angeles times. >> the shooter had left no roll for these people not to be killed. >> reporter: -- no room for these people not to be killed. >> reporter: that terrible night, the 8-year-old son landon was also critically wounded. >> as usual, the detectives looked at the family, the people closest to the victims. >> reporter: they found that they had two older sons but they lived over 1,000 miles away. so detectives started looking for suspects.
