when people on the street reported hearing a voice coming from storm drains. a man stuck in the storm drain they thought. well, when rescuers got here, they could not locate where the voice was coming from. and they were able to locate the victim, a man who told them his no idea how he got into the underground pipe system or how long he was there but it took 45 minutes to rescue him. firefighters describe how they did it. >> we sent two members down on air and on harnesses. we attached them to what we call a high point. we lowered them down via a ladder and kept contact with the victim. he had basically crawled himself out. and then once he got into our hand, we packaged him up and brought him up to street level. >> reporter: and unbelieverrable. the victim was disoriented but threatening injuries. in fact, he was sitting in the ambulance for a good deal of the time being debriefed.

and police want to know what he was doing in the underground storm drain system. and firefighters tell us that he was in a pipe, a 24-inch pipe about 150 feet from the nearest storm drain and they were able to lift him up safely through that storm drain. reporting live in valley stream, long island, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. a car hits a bus and then jumps the curb, hitting two pedestrians in brooklyn. the wild crash caught on camera. we are live with the exclusive video. >> reporter: mary, you can still some of the damage left behind here on 47th street and 18th avenue. that car slammed right into this store front around 5:30 this morning and also hit two pedestrians. the whole thing happened right in front of the store's surveillance cameras. surveillance video shows the moment the car came on to the sidewalk, hitting two pedestrians and plowed into the

one man eventually gets up but witnesses say the second had more serious injuries. >> the person was crying. saying help me, help me. >> the front of the windshield was like as if somebody flew out. >> reporter: police say the car first hit an mta bus and lost control before veering on to the sidewalk. witness photos show the car on the sidewalk and later being removed from the scene. >> the car was destroyed. >> reporter: and now police say the driver remained on the scene and he isn't facing charges right now. the victim, they were taken to the hospital. one had serious injuries. the other had non-serious injuries but neither of them life-threatening. cbs 2 news. >> thank you. a cyclist is dead after an accident in queens. investigators say the woman was riding her bike near the intersection of 56th road and 48th street when a tractor- trailer hit her. she was taken to the hospital but died of her injuries driver

the early stages of demolition now underway at the old staten island hospital. the permit approved five days after a teen was killed in the abandoned building. the tompkinsville section. >> reporter: crews arrived around dawn to begin the demolition. the community has been complaining about the building for years and today we're hearing mixed reaction about it coming down. steps away from the sidewalk memorial to marcos castillo, workers showed up in hard hat, driving in heavy equipment and pouring over building plans, preparing for what many say is long overdue. >> it's a danger zone. for kids. >> reporter: mike lives across the street from the old staten island hospital that's been vacant for years and it's now set to be demolished this week. a permit finally approved for demolition last night. >> the kid died. this should have been done a longtime. >> reporter: the 16-year-old died last friday after tumbling

seven stories down an elevator shaft inside of the abandoned building. his father demanded to know what happened. >> why they wait till something happen to take it out? they should take it out before. >> reporter: cbs 2 news put that question to staten island's borough president who says the building is privately owned. >> i can tell you there was a building that had a demolish ordered by the city months ago. and this young man died records and while some were hoping to see the building repurposed, an option previously discussed. >> they should make an apartment building or a school. >> reporter: most just pleased to see something now being done. >> children are always playing in there and it's dangerous. >> reporter: the family says they still haven't heard from the people who were with him when he fell here last week. the funeral is scheduled for tomorrow. reporting from staten island, janelle burrell, cbs 2 news. >> and officials from the department of buildings say the

company called shore holdings uk. new information this noon on a hit and run that left a college student in a coma. he was struck while walking last thursday night. police are now looking for a dark colored pickup truck, possibly a ford f-150. the 22-year-old victim's car was found at state university where she is a senior. her family says she had knee surgery and doubts she would have walked that far. israel begins deploying troops to counterattacks that days. the cabinet is taking other step today to halt what they fear is the start of a new round of violence. >> reporter: tear gas fired at the protesters armed israelis troops pushing them back as

number of deadly gun and knife attacks carried out in the west bank. israel began deploying 300 soldiers today to counter the attacks. 15 since the start of the jewish new year that have left eight israelis dead. police and military troops will be allowed to seal off neighborhood where is the attacks have come through. the cabinet decided to strip residency rights and demolish the homes of some attackers. and hundreds of security guards will secure buss and other public transport after two palestinians stormed a bus yesterday and stabbed and shot passengers. >> one had a pistol and the second had a knife. and injured five israelis on the bus. >> reporter: the attacks have been fueled by rumors denied by israel that it was plotting to take over some of the most holy sites. the attacks, mostly by young palestinians have been condemn bid the obama administration and a host of politicians.

seen a lot of smoke and a whole bunch of fire, black smoke. she tried to save them but there was too much smoke. >> come on, come on. come on. >> he lives in the home and watched in horror as the house where his 21-year-old daughter lived went up in flames. her body is thought to be one of two that have been found at the crash site. investigators say the pilot was the other. the crash happened three miles from a local airport. no word on why the plane went down. and the now campaign 2016. the first democratic presidential debate took place last night in las vegas. hillary rodham clinton was asked about her shifting views. >> i did say when i was secretary of state three years ago that i hoped it would be the gold standard. it was just finally negotiated last week. and in looking at it, it didn't meet my standard. >> and what democratic socialism is about is saying

they can see into vehicles and even some buildings. x-ray vance deployed for the military now being used by the nypd. but a civil rights group is raising concerns about privacy and health. >> reporter: when human eye aren't enough, the nypd has an x-ray option to keep the city safe. the vehicles, they look like every day delivery vans but they pack equipment similar to that used in airports to look under clothing and into vehicles, to spot weapon, explosives and contraband.

>> the nypd rightly so is up on all the latest technology. >> reporter: but she is concerned enough to join a lawsuit seeking to force the nypd to answer some basic questions about the x-ray vans. including what safe forwards are in place to protect the public from the radiation they e it? >> are there any health risks to us from the use of the vans? are they getting a warrant when they use them? so there are lots of unanswered questions. >> reporter: another question is, how long does the nypd keep the images of the vehicles after they've been captured on the computer inside the x-ray van? >> the devices we have, the vehicle, if you will, are all used lawfully. >> reporter: tuesday commissioner bratton said that the x-ray vans are used only in counterterrific efforts and never for street level crime. beyond that, no comment. >> this falls into the range of security and counterterrorism activity. we will see them in court. >> reporter: in court because the nypd will continue to

the observation in the park, 65. again, the mid-60s. winds west at 6 miles per hour. and winds up to 15 miles per hour. and 50 the cool spot on the map in monticello. and these numbers compare to yesterday, on average about four or five degrees cooler. some exemptions. 70s to start the week. we start to turn things around and see seasonal numbers thursday and friday. and 68 today. still four degrees above normal. and sunsets at 6:17. and again we will see that mix of sun and clouds. for the most part, it's dry. and pollen up a bit today. and down a bit over the next few days as we wrap up the season. and you see that mix there as well. sullivan, some moisture aloft. and can't rule out a passing shower this afternoon. and predominantly a west wind so the dew points at the surface are dry. and you get a sense of that even with the models running the numbers for you. w the wind filling in. and thursday, nice and bright. friday, here comes the front.
