the neighbors. 27-year-old tanisha farren ex scored out of the 27th precinct in handcuffs this morning, now charged with murdering her 6- month-old daughter. she had nothing to say to us before police drove her to court but commented to her god mother watching feet away. >> she said i tried to tell you miss lula but i don't understand. >> reporter: lula can't understand what led to this crime scene in fordham heights yesterday afternoon. >> reporter: was she having problems? >> i really, if she did, she never told me. >> reporter: witnesses say the mother had been dangling her baby out the window then dropped the child six stories. they called 911 and when police arrived they found nile la lawrence unresponsive on the sidewalk. >> i heard a thump. neighbors screamed no, no, no, no. but they were yelling at her don't do it. >> reporter: investigators tell us farren's three other children, ages 4-10 were in the apartment when this took place.

they are in state custody. police say during interviews, farren would not explain why she allegedly did this. her god mother questions if she has postpartum depression and never spoke up. >> this is a disease and nobody detenths it. if you are sick, you don't know what you are doing. >> reporter: she tells us she had just seen her and the kids the day before. she describes her as a loving mother and never imagined this would happen to her baby. >> you know that is an angel. god will take care of her. >> reporter: this mother was a licensed daycare provider out of that apartment between 2013 and 2015. the judge did order the mother to get a psychiatric evaluation. she has no criminalist.

a police confrontation in hackensack. police surrounded a residence searching for jose sanchez alvarez. he is accused of strangling his girlfriend and their 4-year-old son. officers opened fire after santos alvarez lunged at them with a knife. >> there were a lot of police officers in a small kitchen area. but one shot was fired to the abdomen area. i'm told at this time it is a non life threatening injury. >> santos alvarez is recovering in the hospital. a knife roughly 8 to 9 inches long was found at the scene. some of the busiest highways in southern california are closed after a powerful storm triggered dangerous flash flooding. as cbs-2's carter evans reports, hundreds of cars were stranded and drivers were trapped. >> reporter: violent thunderstorms lashed southern

torrential rains fell, 4 to 6 inches per hour, triggering powerful mudslides, leaving drivers helpless. >> we are stuck. >> reporter: this area is devastated right now. >> reporter: california's busy interstate 5 game a river of mud, burying -- became a river of mud, burying cars. firefighters rescued people trapped in their vehicles and in homes swallowed up by the mud. >> traffic came to a complete stop. mud started pouring down the mountain, down the road, and engulfed everything. >> run for your life. >> reporter: thousands of cars and trucks were backed up for miles. >> i have been out here for 24 years now and i've never seen this much water in 24 years. you can't tell how fast it is moving. >> reporter: workers tell me there were about 100 cars buried right along interstate 5 here. they all had to be dug out and tow ad way.

now the clean up is underway. carter evans, cbs news. police out in force, and police have urged israeli civilians to carry weapons, saying illegally armed citizens have a part to play after weeks of violation. clashes broke out from the city of bethlehem today, this comes after a holy site was set on fire overnight. palestinians are blamed for the arson attack at joseph's tomb, a site revered by both palestinians and christians. the house committee investigating the deadly 2012 benghazi attack interviewed hillary clinton's long time aide this morning. umbata may aberdeen is the highest ranking aide to meet with leaders. clinton communicated with her aide than almost anyone else. the committee wants to ask about the events up to during and after the attacks. clinton is expected to testify at some point next week. vice president joe biden

mattcbs-2 news. let's get to the forecast. cooler temperatures are coming, especially for baseball. >> reporter: it is going to be cool for the mets. you know a haunted village in clinton, new jersey also a popular spot this weekend. first off, just wanted to dispense with these cool readings. upper 50s low 60s around the area and the gusty northwest wind. pictures really tell a fascinating story. i want to show you what is going on. i like this from mark and janine demartin. mark says janine is outstanding in her field. which she is. i love that. another beach shot from richard, south shore, beautiful day for beach walking, too cold to get in. but this compelling as well, this is from mike bush and this is bell port. these clouds actually erupted into severe weather just off the coast. i want to show you instagram

water spout off the beach there, west hampton beach, sent in about 100 crow. you can actually see a better definition, water spout right there off the coast. hampton bays. there were may reign warnings issued with these. brief heavy rains through parts of money talk -- of the area. in the city it is the mix of blue and bright clouds. mostly sunny and 61. variable winds at 7. doesn't tell the whole story. we are still dealing with a northwest wind gusting to 20, 25 miles per hour, maybe a degree or two warmer than we were yesterday, even though it doesn't feel like it with the stronger wind. 66 the hoped-for high that would keep us above normal for the last day. as expected we now have frost you about. it is a freeze watch to the east and into the hudson valley. saturday night into sunday morning. watch for this to expand.

and pay attention. cold overnight saturday into sunday, sunday into monday. i'll tell you what, a few clouds out there, the wind whipping in, out of the northwest. all that have cool air waiting to take over and it happens. as far as precipitation, maybe an instability shower tonight, possibility of a shower tomorrow, and maybe even a snow shower well to the north and west. there is about a 20% chance of a shower on sunday. and then what happens, you've got that cool temperature. 51 is the normal high for the 23rd of november, staying dry though. the pollen count stays right around 3. what is interesting, kids, is after the big chill, we have numbers back to 70 by wednesday. >> i love it. thanks so much. appreciate it. we'll be right back. but before that, let's get to this. tomorrow night 48 hours investigates a murder mystery in the shadow of the las vegas strip.
