here's the breakdown of the day. this morning at 11:52, feels like 48 with the mix of sun and this afternoon, 56 degrees feeling like 53, and then this evening, 5:00, feeling like 52, and for those of you going out to the mets game tonight, you want to take note of this. 8:00, 49 degrees feeling more like 45 degrees, and it's going to be very cold for the mets tonight, and we have an incredibly cold night ahead with the freeze warnings to talk about. how low will the temperatures go? i will have details in my full forecast. andrea, diane, back to you. >> i don't think the met's fans will mind. the top story this morning, police are hunting for a gunman who opened fire and struck a 12- year-old girl. >> ilana golds is live from mineola with more on this. ilana? >> reporter: diane, the 12-year- old girl is in grave condition after getting shot in the head. we just spoke to her

grandfather, and he has been by her side all morning. he tells us he's heart broken and praying she survives. police worked overnight at this home searching for clues after someone outside fired a single 5:00 last night. >> they said, well they shot up what? and they said your granddaughter has been hit. that's when i left the store and i got down to the other store and a couple of friends told me the same thick. >> reporter: david joyner rushed to the scene when he heard a bullet struck his 12- year-old granddaughter. it pierced through the front window. >> lovable. very lovable. we have a nickname for her, chocolate moon. we call her chocolate moon. beautiful girl. >> reporter: detectives are trying to to figure out who did

this. they are questioning if the shot came during a gang related argument or driveby shooting. >> i don't have to tell you the magnitude of the case. a very horrific situation on the 12-year-old girl. >> the neighbors alarmed over the violence. >> it happens much too often. i'm very disappointed this happened. >> reporter: and community leaders are outraged. they also showed up at the home to provide support for the victim and her family. >> they said 12-year-old, if you hear a 12-year-old has been shot, to me, that's an urgency. i jumped in my car and came over. >> i have lived here 30 years, and it's a terrible tragedy for a young girl to get shot in the head. >> reporter: this morning police are still investigating and now they want to offer a reward for any information leading to an arrest. we will let you know what they

have to say today. ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> ilana, thank you. new this morning, the suffolk county police are searching for the driver who hit and killed a man in a wheelchair, and investigators said the victim, 40-year-old michael dora was in the right lane on the southbound grady neck road in west babylon when he was hit last night. detectives are looking for a dark-colored vehicle possibly a nissan with front end damage. police in queens are investigating the death of a woman found inside of a bathtub. officers responded to a 911 call of a possible assault at the home on 90th avenue in jamaica. police say once inside they found the woman in the tub with burns on her body, and sources tell cbs 2 that investigators are looking to speak with the woman's boyfriend, and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death. happening today, the search resumes for a worker who fell in the water near bayonne, new jersey. the man fell into the water

from bayonne around 8:30 last night, and the coast guard said six divers searched for him last night, and crews will return to the area at 10:00 this morning. new this morning, mayor de blasio is in israel today for what he describes as a solidarity mission. it comes as tensions rise between the israelis and the palestinians. three palestinians were shot and killed today, attacking them with knives in the west bank and jerusalem. in the last month 33 palestinians were killed and 8 israelis killed. the mayor will be visiting the area, and this is the first international trip paid for by an individual. authorities have raided the

today, it is going to be breezy, but the sun will be out, and that will help to make you feel warmer, and it will only warm into the 50s. here's what you can expect. chilly weekend ahead. tomorrow, most of us only in the 40s, and then lows overnight, tonight, and tomorrow, in the 20s and 30s, and yes, we will be dealing with freeze warnings and watches out there. the deep purple, freeze warning tonight, and then in the lighter color bluish, that's a freeze watch folks, and certainly temperatures will be dropping off quickly tonight. the reason why it's cooling down, the cold front, crossing through the region, bringing cold air behind it. a variety of clouds passing by. a stray sprinkle north and west chance. mainly dry day with a lot of sun, just on the cooler side of things, and tonight f you're going to be going to the mets' game, you want to bundle up,

and when the game starts, we will be in the upper 40s, and by game end, we will be in the low 40s, all the while, feeling cooler than that with clear skies and a breeze. very chilly tonight into the overnight hours, and temperatures will continue to tumble. this afternoon, 57, and the mix of sun and clouds, and maybe a stray sprinkle north and west. tonight, mainly clear skies, 38 in the city, and 20s north and west, and then for your day tomorrow, a high of just 50, folks. it's colder for the second half of your weekend. after that, the warming trend begins. monday, 53 degrees, looking lovely. tuesday, 65 with sun, and then wednesday, 70 and mostly sunny. i think i will go pumpkin picking on tuesday. that was my pick of the week. the dry stretch ahead, and a beautiful day for this walk with us to cure lupus, and i want to bring into the conversation right now if i can interrupt him, mr. woody johnson.

many of you know him as the chairman of the jets, but you're the founder of the alliance for lupus research. >> this organization was designed for one purpose, to treat, cure, and prevent lupus. every dollar that goes in was to prevent research, and the board like me, we pay all the underwriting and underwrite all the expenses so the donor can be assured we are fighting for the best research money can buy. >> reporter: this is an issue that is near and dear to your heart, and so many people are here for the same reason with loved ones fighting this. tell me what it's like to see so many people around you. >> my daughter, jamie, has lupus, so i know what it's like from a parent's standpoint, but a million and a half, mostly women, 10% men, have lupus. seeing 5,000 people out here today gives me hope, the

largest walk for lupus in the world. we are raising a lot of money, and that gives me hope that something will happen. we fight every day, and we will eventually get this done. >> reporter: i understand you have made great strides, right? started in 1999. >> yes, well, we have got about five drugs in clinical trials now at various stages, and something will come out, and we have great alliances with the pharmaceutical industry who are very interested in lupus and finding something for lupus, and even if it's for one day. if i can save a woman for 1 day, from her suffering, it will all be well worth it. >> reporter: and today, in the past years you have done the walk, and what is your favorite memory from this event? >> well, you know, having the cool. watching those young girls get out here at 7:00 in the morning, 40 degrees, and what? it's cold? it doesn't -- i mean they give

are going to have to figure out how to do four times what they couldn't figure out how to do once in seven tries this year, beat the cubs. the nlcs game 1 starting pitcher, matt harvey was one of few mets on the field yesterday. i'm guessing the skipper gave him a day to recover for a late night celebration in l.a. they have to face the cubs' team that has more postseason home runs than any other team this year. the cubs winning all seven matchups this year, but it's not that simple the. >> series matchup in the year, didn't go in our favor, but i think we all believe we are a completely different team. we are excited to give a different run with this important series. >> we are a different lineup, too, and we are looking forward to it. again, i think postseason is a whole different game from the regular season.

the message out to all the men. if you're in abusive situation, don't be scared of the guys on the basketball court or the barber shops. they are not going to help you. safe horizon helped me out, and i'm a prime example of the good things that can happen if you seek help. >> it's often thought of as a female issue, was it harder to seek help and comradery among the victims. >> some people make fun of you, they see you living in a shelter, and they are like what is this guy doing? what's going on? it's just good to be able to take that step forward and to show my son and my kids that daddy can take charge and lead the family in a good way. >> good for you. >> rachel, the statistics show one in four women and one in seven men experience domestic violence.

why is this issue so prevalent? how do you combat it? >> we don't talk about it as much as we should. that's why we are trying to raise awareness. as you said one in four women and one in seven men. those numbers are staggering. the more we talk about it, the more opportunity the survivors get the help they need and we can work to eliminate domestic violence in our society. >> you did eventually leave your wife and dealt with struggles on the way. walk us through that and how you overcame them. >> i had to resign from my position in health care. i did it because, you know, my kids were being neglected at one point because i worked overnight. i didn't need that no more. i had to take the step forward to do that. it was financially hard. i lost my home and practically everything. you name it, i love it. i walked into safe horizon with nothing in my hands, except my kids. >> here you are with your chef's jacket on and food on the table.

how did this come to be? >> you're in a shelter, finding yourself and i said i'm going to do what i love, and cooking is what i love to do. it always brought me comfort through my separation. the shelter let me do a lot of cooking. i have today my grill marinated herb chicken and the curry steak. >> how did being at safe horizon help you develop this skill or did you always have the skill? were you able to learn more? >> my grandmother, i was always the kid sitting on the floor in the kitchen, and i said let me just go ahead and cook for the residents at the shelter on mother's day, and the chicken was like the best on the menu, and when they had it, they came back, and they were like this is amazing. >> this is amazing! >> i added it to my cater now, which you can find on my website.

so a few stray sprinkles north and west of the city. but what we're going to notice is the temperatures dropping overnight and tomorrow we'll be chillier than today. highs for many of us tomorrow in the 40s. today we're talking about 57 in the city and a mixture of sunshine and clouds as the cold front crosses and maybe a stray sprinkle north and west. and winds out of the northwest at ten to 15 with higher gusts. and it will make it feel a little cooler. but i think the sun helps to redeem the feels-like temperature into the mid-50s. and tonight's forecast, the temperatures will be dropping. at 8:00, it will be 49 degrees. it will feel like 44 under clear skies after that temperature and we'll continue to drop by the time the game is over, low 40s out. >> there. and we'll bottom out at 38 in the city overnight under clear skies.

we are trying to figure out maybe ten plus years. we really done some wonderful things and the organization is just been so amazing to us and to my family and the community. >> reporter: give people why it is important to help people with this disease what is it that you have to deal with? >> for everyone it is different. some people it affects different parts of their body, internally, skin, bones, intestines, kidneys it affects everybody very differently and i think that the most important thing that for people to know especially from this day and this organization is to educate, it is a unknown disease and thing that the more they deen the more they educate -- they do and the more they educate people, people can

learn more how broad of a spectrum the disease is. >> reporter: it affects mostly young women like yourself? >> yes. i was diagnosed earlier than most because my mother was aware enough to take me right to a rheumatologist that is not usually the first step in diagnosis. so i was diagnosed when i was 20t is definitely -- when i was 20. it is definitely more with young women and it affects a lot of women across the world. and it is amazing that the alliance research has done so much to educate. they've done so much in trial studies in research. and 100% of everything they raise goes to research. that is unusual for a lot of organizations. >> reporter: it truly is. >> so that is one of the reason
