his life after one shares his story of survival. good morning from the studio headquarters in new york. thanks for joining us. i'm meg oliver in for omg. parts of the eastern u.s. winter. freeze warnings and frost advisories are in effect this morning from northern massachusetts. the colder temperatures are in the mid atlantic' northeast. on sunday, people in northern michigan saw their first snow of the season but the wintry seens won't last long. degrees. up next on "cbs this morning," we will track the fall forecast. a major commercial highway in southern california will stay closed for at least several more days after major mudslides. state route 58 is still covered in mud that is six feet deep in some areas and about 100 miles north of los angeles. last week, a 30-minute downpour turned the highway into a mud

pit and trapping 300 people in their cars. at least 60% of the hidden pine fire is contained this morning in central texas. nearly 300 firefighters assisted by aircraft are fighting the 4600 acre fire. 50 homes were destroyed since the fire broke out last week. it's shaping up to be an eventful week for the race for the white house. the front runners from both parties are making headlines with their talk of terrorism and we are still waiting on vice president joe biden's plans. brook silva-braga is in new york with more. >> reporter: joe biden did give a speech here in new york city over the weekend, but staying true to form, he didn't make any reference to a possible presidential bid. he did discuss terrorism and religious extremism which are major topics at the moment with talks of 9/11 and the benghazi attacks. hillary clinton says she doesn't

when she testified in front of a republican-controlled house committee on the american attack on the compound in benghazi. >> i will do my best to answer their questions but i don't really know what their objective is right now joot former secretary of state has testified twice before. she says the investigation has turned political. >> i think it's pretty clear that whatever they might have thought they were doing, they ended up becoming a partisan arm of the republican national committee. >> reporter: representative trey gowdy who chairs the committee says he is not concerned with the 2016 campaign and is only concerned about find youing on the security failures that led to the death of four americans. >> i have told my colleagues and friends shut up talking about things you don't know anything about. >> reporter: meanwhile, the republican campaign took a bitter turn over the weekend when front-runner donald trump placed blame for the 9/11 attacks on president george w.

syria. the military says san afi al nasr died in the attack on wednesday. they said he was a experienced jihadist and funneling money for the network. secretary of state john kerry says he will meet separately this week with israeli and palestinian leaders in an effort to end the latest wave of violence. israeli police say an attacker opened fire sunday in a bus station, killing a soldier and wounding ten others. johnathan vigliotti reports. >> reporter: this cell phone video captured the latest act of violence. a gunman believed to be palestinian opened fire at a heavily guarded bus station and killing an israeli soldier and wounding several people being shot and killed by security forces. israeli authorities later admitted accidentally shooting a silence seeker during the attack after mistaking him for the assailant. the arrest began last month

on sunday, prime minister benefiting benjamin naert rejected observers on the site. >> it doesn't mention palestinian site and it doesn't mention for preliminary terrorism. >> reporter: as the violence continues, cities like tel aviv are suggesting banning arab maintenance workers and cleaners from schools. some israeli parents are worried about an attack against their children. other civilians are flocking to gun shops to arm themselves. >> i think it's important in this case to have a means of self-defense. >> reporter: the death toll on both sides continues to rise, secretary of state john kerry will meet with middle east leaders separately this week in an effort to ease tension in the region. johnathan vigliotti, cbs news, tel aviv. typhoon koppu is trig.ing traumatic rescues in the philippines. the massive slow moving storm has forced 20,000 people from their homes.

gained 132 points and s&p rose 1 and the nasdaq unfortunate 55 poise. stockholders vote today on aetna's purchase of health care giant humana. the board of directors of both companies have reportedly voted in favor of the deal. two shareholders filed the lawsuit last week to try to block the sale, claiming it's not a good deal. apple is planning appeal after losing a patent lawsuit. a federal jury ordered apple to pay $240 million for the university of michigan for processors that power iphones and ipads. the jury ruled that some recent devices entring the patent on improving processor efficiency. the family friendly horror movie "goosebumps" took the on top spot two weeks before hall week. jack black stars in the popular

the minneapolis star tribune reports on the shooting death of a sheriff's deputy. police say a 24-year veteran of the atkins sheriff's department was shot on sunday. the spokesman said they fought over the deputy's gun. >> several shots were fired during that struggle and security officers were able to get in the room and the subject was tased with a taser, and taken into custody. >> the deputy was guarding the suspect who was being treated after a domestic dispute. after the suspect was tased, he died at the scene. the new york daily news covers the start of the "good fellas" trial today. a mob tattoo will be on his arm covered in court today. vincent asaro will have ahis tattoo covered. he was depicted in the film

"the washington post" reports eddie murphy broke his 28-year silence on the stand-up comedy stage. he was honored for the mark twain prize for american humor on sunday night and performed a short stand-up comedy routine which included a shot at bill cosby. >> bill, bill has one of these. did y'all make bill give his back? >> he also did an explicit impression of cosby, which we can't play for you. murphy last told jokes on stage way back in 1987. and it might be one of the most unlikely plays in college football history. michigan state's last-second touchdown and a fumble recovery gave them a win over archrival michigan and left a big house crowd stunneded. this morning, they will still celebrating on campus in east lansing, as you can imagine.

even by new york city standards, this was a bizarre sight. a kangaroo was hopping around a parking lot in staten island on saturday. didn't take longs for cops to corner it and return it to its owner. the kangaroo had apparently escaped through an unlocked gate of a yard from a nearby home. the heart of texas is used to the beat of the sound of local dance halls. most big towns had a honky tonk but as david begnaud reports, those days are drifting away. >> reporter: shuffle your way through the broken spoke dance hall in austin, texas, and you'll meet james white, the local rhinestone cowboy uchlt.

since he opened the place in 1964, guests have flocked in five days a week to enjoy one of texas' oldest traditions, two-stepping to the sound of music. >> coming out hurry to honky tonk and listen to a country music band and you get up and dance and have a good time. a true mom and pop operation. i tell people that my wife is a working half the family and i'm in charge of bs and pr and we ain't going to change nothing, you know? >> reporter: he is pretty good at b strks. >> i know he is. >> reporter: that country charm has allowed the broken spoke to survive. across most of texas and historic rural areas, dance halls are in danger. >> many of them have disappeared through lack of interest or support, fallen down, burned. >> reporter: jess fleming is president of the dance hall preservation inc. how much of the heritage of texas can be traced back to a dance hall? >> i think pretty much all of it can be, because everybody came to the dance hall or to the community center to share and enjoy what they had done in the

community they lived in. >> reporter: does it make you emotional? >> it does. >> reporter: why? >> because it's such a great thing. and to see them dying. >> reporter: twin sisters is surviving. it is the oldest dance hall in texas, one hour west of austin. it opened to the public in 1870. its estimated 1,000 dance halls were built in texas between the late 1800s and the early 1900s. now just 400 still stand and only two operate daily. lucken bach and this one when when it comes to preserve texas' decaying dance halls, broken spoke is still moving. >> they know darn well they are not at carnegie hall. >> reporter: that is true texas talking from a cowboy dedicated to saving what is left, one
