his life after one shares his story of survival. good morning from the studio headquarters in new york. thanks for joining us. i'm meg oliver in for omg. parts of the eastern u.s. winter. freeze warnings and frost advisories are in effect this morning from northern massachusetts. the colder temperatures are in the mid atlantic' northeast. on sunday, people in northern michigan saw their first snow of the season but the wintry seens won't last long. degrees. up next on "cbs this morning," we will track the fall forecast. a major commercial highway in southern california will stay closed for at least several more days after major mudslides. state route 58 is still covered in mud that is six feet deep in some areas and about 100 miles north of los angeles. last week, a 30-minute downpour turned the highway into a mud

pit and trapping 300 people in their cars. at least 60% of the hidden pine fire is contained this morning in central texas. nearly 300 firefighters assisted by aircraft are fighting the 4600 acre fire. 50 homes were destroyed since the fire broke out last week. it's shaping up to be an eventful week for the race for the white house. the front runners from both parties are making headlines with their talk of terrorism and we are still waiting on vice president joe biden's plans. brook silva-braga is in new york with more. >> reporter: joe biden did give a speech here in new york city over the weekend, but staying true to form, he didn't make any reference to a possible presidential bid. he did discuss terrorism and religious extremism which are major topics at the moment with talks of 9/11 and the benghazi attacks. hillary clinton says she doesn't

syria. the military says san afi al nasr died in the attack on wednesday. they said he was a experienced jihadist and funneling money for the network. secretary of state john kerry says he will meet separately this week with israeli and palestinian leaders in an effort to end the latest wave of violence. israeli police say an attacker opened fire sunday in a bus station, killing a soldier and wounding ten others. johnathan vigliotti reports. >> reporter: this cell phone video captured the latest act of violence. a gunman believed to be palestinian opened fire at a heavily guarded bus station and killing an israeli soldier and wounding several people being shot and killed by security forces. israeli authorities later admitted accidentally shooting a silence seeker during the attack after mistaking him for the assailant. the arrest began last month

the minneapolis star tribune reports on the shooting death of a sheriff's deputy. police say a 24-year veteran of the atkins sheriff's department was shot on sunday. the spokesman said they fought over the deputy's gun. >> several shots were fired during that struggle and security officers were able to get in the room and the subject was tased with a taser, and taken into custody. >> the deputy was guarding the suspect who was being treated after a domestic dispute. after the suspect was tased, he died at the scene. the new york daily news covers the start of the "good fellas" trial today. a mob tattoo will be on his arm covered in court today. vincent asaro will have ahis tattoo covered. he was depicted in the film
