searching for this man, again, still on the run. authorities -- he is wanted for several outstanding warrants for domestic assault and driving with an expired license. as the prisoner's hands were cuffed behind his back, he pushed the officer to the ground and ran off. and this thunder sleet is the fifth time since january that a nypd prisoner has escaped custody. and after the last incident in august, chief bratton said he is not going to be to tolerate continued escapes while in police custody. in all the previous incident, the suspects were caught. now this escapee was last seen wearing a blue shirt. and he may still have his hands cuffed behind his back. and he was seen running northbound down georgia avenue. we are live in east new york, brooklyn, meg baker, cbs 2 news. dozens are out of their homes had afternoon as fire

overnight a raging fire ripped through a building under construction in chelsea. ilana gold is live at west 17th street with the latest. >> reporter: chris, firefighters are keeping a close eye on this building. they have this entire area blocked off because they question if it's going to collapse. take a look at the scene. you can see right now, crews are dousing it with water and you can see how charred this building is on the top levels. right now, the department of buildings is also out here looking at the structure to see if it's a danger to the public. witnesses in chelsea recorded the fire on west 17th street between 7th and 8th avenues at 3:00 this morning. the flames spread fast as they shot up 0 feet from -- shot up 20 feet from the building. >> the flames kicked up into high gear. >> reporter: chopper 2 flew over the scene where crews battled the flames for four hours. the thick smothering smoke poured from the building all morning and filled this neighborhood.

describe what you woke up to. >> it was enough smoke to make your eyes hurt. and that was just inside. >> reporter: the fire didn't cause any injury, only a watchman was at this empty building when it started. it's being renovated for a luxury condo project. the fire chief says the water used to fight the fire made the structure unstable and a risk to the public. >> at this time, the building is in major danger of collapse. >> reporter: so residents from four buildings ai don't the street were forced to evacuate. -- buildings across the street were forced to evacuate. families grabbed the essentials and then ran out and stood in the cold and watched the scene. >> you see flames coming out of the window -- coming out of the window es and cracking and falling -- windows and cracking and falling out. >> it's incredibly scary. you don't want know what's going to happen. >> reporter: and back out here live, crews are still putting

out hot spots on west 17th street after a massive fire this morning. the fire chief says it could be days before the residents across the street are allowed back in their homes and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. we're live in chelsea, ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. new information in a deadly wrong-way crash on long island overnight. a driver may have been running from police. janelle burrell has more on what led up to the head-on collision. >> reporter: smoldering metal wreckage, all that's left of this suv, one of two vehicles involved in the wrong-way crash. a head-on collision investigators say between a suspect trying to evade police and an innocent driver, both killed from the fire and impact. chopper 2 over the scene this morning hours after the crash along a northern state parkway between exits 41 and 42 in dix hills where the other car was burned beyond recognition. investigators say it began as a

they say the female driver refused to cooperate with the officer and drove off. >> when fleeing from the scene, she almost struck the police officer at the scene. the police officer then engaged in a police pursuit. >> reporter: that chase led the driver on to the northern state parkway around 2:40 a.m. >> the suspect vehicle was going in the wrong direction, westbound in the eastbound lanes. when it struck a 2011 honda accord. >> reporter: as accident investigators work the scene, that the stretch of the northern state was closed for hours, re-opening around 9:30. so far, police have not released names of the man and the woman killed. investigators referred us to their policy on police pursuits which clearly states that police should not pursue a vehicle if it's putting the public in danger. it also states that police should only chase a vehicle under ex10 ewe -- under extreme

circumstance, not for routine traffic stops. janelle burrell, cbs 2 news. >> police say the initial stop was for suspicion of dwi and a stolen vehicle. well police have released new pictures and a sketch of a suspect who attacked a woman in union square over the weekend. investigators say they are looking for a homeless man who has a bite mark on his hand. police say he attacked a 63- year-old woman in the stall of a public bathroom sunday afternoon. and the woman bit the man on his left hand and he ran off. the nypd is on the hunt for an armed robber who struck twice within a half hour period over the weekend. cameras captured the man accused of following the woman early saturday morning. just 15 minutes earlier, police say he got out of a light colored suv on east 9th street and then threatened an 18-year- old man with his gun before he ran off with his cellphone. now to the mets championship chase. the team is in chicago for tonight's game three of the
