in north yonkers. accident investigators here said it was a 44 foot plunge down into this construction pit here. the driver managed to survive avmz. -- survive amazing ly ly. the doors pried over to get the drive out described only as an adult female of a car had been leaving the apartment building garage on war burton avenue. she flew through the chain link fence and off into that pit with enough momentum the clear a wall of metal rebar. first responders scene. they had to drove down to the metro north station and take away the woman listed in serious condition with serious conditions but alive. one construction worker witnessed the crash and was taken away to speak with investigators. neighbors tell me this is the

second similar accident involving a car and this construction pit recently. listen. >> it happened a few weeks ago because they had this knocked down, the bus was down and she went there and that they just put that big brick wall to keep them from going over the embankment. >> this is not the first time this happened? >> no, this is not the first time this happened. second time. it's dangerous. previous accident we're told involved a car that blew through the corner avenue. that concrete barrier was put in place but there's no concrete barrier where the car blew through. investigators are taking their measurements trying to figure out what went wrong, why she was going so fast, did she lose control, a medical emergency. we have one person with serious injuries, a driver

pit in north yonkers. lou young, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. the cause of a deadly crash in new jersey is under investigation. a 10-year-old girl riding with her family was killed when a car slammed into their minivan. christine sloan is live in plainfield with the details for us. christine. >> reporter: the accident happened right next to plainfield high school at this intersection. as you said, a 10-year-old girl in a minivan heading to school was killed. >> i heard a loud collision, a lot of banging. like a big crash. >> neighbors heard the loud crash on arlington avenue in plainfield, new jersey. the car going east on arlington hitting the minivan. the minivan heading south on west 8th, a 10-year-old girl in the minivan was killed. >> having three small children of my own here it's real sad. >> police say five other children were in the minivan

were all taken to the hospital. rescuers workers had to cut the the victims out. residents in this historic district say it's cars speed by the high school. >> one thing, it's a school zone. you would think that people would slow down, 25 miles per hour. >> the sight of this child's booster seat on the road chilling for some students at the high school. >> breaks your heart. >> yeah, it's dangerous around here. stufrnts -- students walk to school. >> it's kay -- it's crazy. you come here and hear a girl died and stuff and it's crazy. er the cause of the -- >> reporter: the cause of the accident is still under information. christine sloan, cbs 2 news. the nypd said tests show a gun found in the east river is the weapon used to shoot an nypd officer last week.

of officer randolph holder will say their final farewells this his fiance sat down with cbs 2 news to talk about his legacy. janelle burrell with the exclusive interview. >> their live was the american dream. mary mohamed and officer randolph holder high school sweethearts that came to the u.s. from their native and succeeded. >> i said, randy, you are one of the people that came to this country and did what you were you understand you accomplished so much. i'm so proud of you. >> a shared future filled with plans. they were raising mohamed's 12-year-old daughter together and wanted to have more children of their own. >> we were closing on a house next week. we were happy. we planned to get married. >> those hopes all ending when the 33-year-old was shot and killed on duty while in east harlem. >> we were told he was in surgery and then a few minutes after we were told by the commissioner he didn't make it.

duty this past year. janelle burrell, cbs 2 news . >> his fiance plans to start a foundation in his honor. the wake is tuesday at the greater ame in jamaica queens. the funeral is on wednesday at 3:00. his body will be flown to his native for burial. the hunt is on for two suspects who approached who men early yesterday morning on 43rd avenue in long island city and tried to grab a gold chain from one of them. during a struggle one of the suspects took out a gun and shot the man with the chain twice and once towards his friend and missed. parts of south asia are dealing with widespread disaster after a massive earthquake ripped through northern afghanistan. people are sifting through the rubble looking for sign of survivors. the 7.5 magnitude quake rocked the region killing more than 100 people and forcing thousands out of their homes. officials are

warning of after shocks and urging people to stay outside. the woman accused of driving into a crowd at saturday's oklahoma university's parade is due in court today. she's charged with four counts of second degree murder and dui. her attorney believes she suffers from mental illness. 17 people are still in the hospital, five of them in critical condition. the family of a missing man is asking for the public's help. he disappeared over the weekend after making a routine trip to volunteer in queens. emily smith is live in elmhurst with more. emily. >> reporter: mary , this is julio gonzales. the last time anybody saw him he was pretty much standing here. that's his senior center across the street. a security guard told him they were closed and he walked away. that's the last time anybody saw him.

his assisted living west 46th street apartment in manhattan as part of his normal routine saturday morning. he regularly takes the 7 train to volunteer at the elmhurst senior center in queens. >> his son, jeffery, said he wasn't supposed to volunteer on saturday but seem today have his days mixed up. >> it was closed so they returned him back to the train. a gentleman you walked over to him and he said, wait, your father, i saw him on saturday. he saw him at about 10:00 a.m. on the 7 train heading back to manhattan. >> the gonzales family hopes posters in the queens subway along with dozens of senior citizens passing out fliers will gonzales also using the same train at 74th and broadway and then walks a half a block to his senior sister. center. everyone knows him. >> family tells us gonzales goes to the senior center five days a week and was diagnosed

into the sea yesterday after a may day call. five people were killed, one person is still missing. smaller boats in the area went back and forth helping ferry survivors to shore. it is unclear what caused that boat to sink. team work helped save a whale trapped off the california coast. rescuers from the coast guard, sea world and local lifeguards spent hours yesterday working to untangle the hump back. it was caught in lines attached to a lobster trap and literally anchored in place. rescuers say the whale likely would have struggled for hours and died without intervention. chase stadium may be long gone but a couple got the best picture. >> i can't even describe it. it's 31 years ago . >> wedding belling range for 1984. for a couple who loves the mets as much as they do there was only one place to reception.

with some clouds and some rain, cleared up nicely yesterday afternoon. we remain clear today. the clouds are well to our south. we're keeping our eye on this. this area of low pressure, this is what used to be hurricane patricia. right now it's just a huge rainmaker moving across parts of louisiana and pushing into georgia. this is what we're keeping an eye on. this will be the system that brings us some rain. this is how we see it playing out. we have nothing to talk about weather wise for your monday and even for tuesday. it's not the rain moves in early wednesday. morning commute is likely going as we move throughout the day we'll see pockets of moderate and heavy rain. can't rule out a few thunderstorms before the thursday morning. how much rain will we see? yesterday, it was liking like we'd see anywhere from an inch and a half and today it looks like one inch to two and a half inches if this old true.
