anywhere from an inch to 1.5 inches to over 2 inches in new jersey and we took a little radar snapshot from right after 11:00 last night. this was the storm packing those wind, 40 to almost 50 miles per hour winds with this storm that brought the tree down. and yeah, the heavy rain and the flooding with the morning commute. a few showers pushing through north and west of the city. and affiliated with this big system. and now the system is bringing in the warm temperatures out of the southwest today but just a hint into your halloween and the weekend, look at all the cool air waiting to take over. it's 71 in new york right now. enjoy it. it's only 42 in chicago. more details in a bit. right now, things back to chris. >> all right. thank you. a new jersey man is accused of operating a rolling meth lab out of his car near a busy highway. the story is new at noon. we are live from wayne, new

jersey with more. >> reporter: yeah, the doors hadn't even opened for business behind me but police say its general manager was already busy at work inside his car inside the parking lot. but he wasn't cooking burger, police say he was cooking meth. it started out as a routine patrol stop for wayne police but ended like this, hazmat teams, the drug enforcement administration and even the passaic county sheriff's bomb squad, all converging around one car. two the officers from the police uniformed enforcement squad had discovered a mobile meth lab. >> observed the vehicle parked with the dome light on and they could see the individual inside the car. it looked suspicious. they got out of the vehicle and approached him and watched him mixing these chemicals in water bolts. >> reporter: police say he was cooking up meth in the front

seat of his car, setting up shop on route 46 in the parking lot of the tilted kilt where he is the general manager. >> they knock on the windows and obviously fumes started coming out of whatever he was mixing. they withdrew him from the vehicle and the car filled up with smoke. and smelled it too. he informed that them that he was mixing came -- informed them that he was mixing chemicals to make meth. >> reporter: he is now being held on $5,000 bail. we are live in wayne, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. the search is on for a man who tried to rape-year-old girl in the -- rape an 8-year-old girl last saturday. she screamed and the man ran off. the girl was treated at a hospital and released. today marks the third

that devastated the tristate area. families are still rebuilding from superstorm sandy. volunteers took on a major challenge this morning. ilana gold has story. >> reporter: these volunteers working 24 hours straight on this third anniversary of superstorm sandy. >> we got here at 8:30 yesterday. >> reporter: and you haven't stopped in. >> nope. >> reporter: prepping and priming the walls at this home in the auburn section of rockaway for painting. >> to walk in here and see the work being done, what does that mean to you? >> that eventually i will have a warm, cozy, clean house to come to after a hard day's work. >> reporter: she owns this home and these pictures show what it looked like after a 12-foot tidal surge gutted the bottom level. she has been living upstairs ever since. >> i just have lost my freedom for space. it's just unbelievable. >> reporter: but rebilling has come at a hefty price. she says she's spent her life

saving fixing the plumbing and she still has no heat. >> i didn't know how this was going to get done. and it's getting done now. >> reporter: thanks to these work -- workers from a non- profit. they have been rebuilding her place since june. and they have fixed up 60 other homes damaged by sandy. >> every day, every week, we get calls from folks in the community applying for services for the first time. so there are still hundreds of people out here that need storm-damaged properties. >> reporter: she says she hopes all of the work is completed by christmas, that way she can celebrate here with her family for the first time in three years. ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> friends of rockaway say there are 25 people on the waiting list for next year to fix their storm-damaged homes. now to the mets' championship chase as the team make up.

last night's game wasn't even close. the royals score a 7-1 win. players say they are looking forward to hearing the cheers of the hometown crowd. in the fan mix at citi field, the stadium's oldest usher, he is 91 years old and worked the stands for the last two championshipsful he will be there again as they try to go for title number three. >> i took two aspirins last night after it was over. i was very depressed. >> reporter: luke knows a thing or two about the met digging themselves into a hole. >> yogi berra said it ain't over till it's over. >> reporter: at 91 years young, he has seen pretty much everything. and now the oldest usher at citi field. >> they're yelling, oh, my god, it's unbelieverrable. sometimes you don't hear yourself -- it's unbelievable. sometimes you don't hear yourself talking. >> reporter: he started back in 1964, never imagining he would

stay this long. >> you must love it? >> i do. i get to be among people. it's great. it's fun. >> reporter: he originally got this as a second job to make extra money on the side to support his wife and 52 years later, the purple heart bronze star battle of the bulge army veteran is still going strong. and these the day, holding down the fort in section 310. >> might -- i have the bats signed. >> reporter: he witnessed the team's biggest moments. >> the mets are the world championships. >> reporter: including the 1969 and 1986 world series wins and now he will be working again this weekend in his usual section, hoping for some more wins. >> we have faith. people are telling me, when are you going to retire? i said, the boss is up above, he's the one to tell me, nobody else is going to tell me. >> reporter: the mets don't

andrea grymes, cbs 2 news. well governor cuomo has canceled plans to use world series tickets to raise campaign cash. his campaign raised criticism for offering tickets for $5,500 each. the tickets included a 90 minute pre-game reception with the governor in a luxury box before games three or four at citi field. and his campaign says the plan was nixed to make more tickets available for fans given overwhelming demand. fans are showing their team spirit. marie up loaded this picture to our facebook page. young met fans ready to cheer on their team. and monica posted this picture, perhaps she is hoping that hitting plays a bigger role tomorrow night. and you can post your photos at facebook.com/cbsnewyork. the house of representatives has elected paul ryan to be its next leader.

to the president. more from capitol hill. >> the house will be in order. >> reporter: john boehner called the house to order for the last time and then he called for a vote to replace him as speaker of the house. >> ryan? >> reporter: the result did say not come as a surprise. >> the honorable paul d. ryan of the state of wisconsin having received the majority of the votes cast is dually elected as speaker of the house. >> reporter: speaker ryan is now second in line to vice president biden to become president. >> i never thought i would be speaker. but early in my life, i wanted to serve this house. i thought this place was exhilarating because here you can make a difference. >> reporter: today's vote marks the end of boehner's 25 years in congress. the last five of which he served as speaker of the house. >> i leave with no regret new york city burdens. if anything -- with no regret,

well power has been restored to thousands of pennsylvania residents left in the dark due to a run-away military blimp. >> the unmanned aircraft drifted for hours taking out power lines. >> reporter: the high-tech blimp remains scattered in two pieces in rural pennsylvania while the u.s. military tries to figure out how it got loose. they know it broke free from the anchor in maryland and drifted about 150 miles before coming down. >> my understanding is that in

said, a lot of it is hanging in the trees in the ravine right now. >> reporter: the military is work out a plan to safely remove the blimp. the spokesman says it will take a few days. in the meantime, state police along with u.s. army and national guard personnel are guarding the site because the blimp carries sophisticated radar equipment. >> what we have is security onsite so that we know, we have accounted for everything. i know for a fact that they have secured the radar. >> reporter: the blimp was still being tested. it was anchored by an inch- thick tether designed to withstand hurricane-forced winds. several months ago, a captain told cbs news there was a one in a million chance of the tether breaking but wednesday was just an average windy, rainy day. cbs 2 news. >> armed 16 fighter jets trailed the blimp but there was never an intention to shoot it down. and now john elliott, a

whole lot going on out there today. and this afternoon. >> absolutely. i mean, changes from last night to today and then we've got a busy weekend in city. and in your neighborhood this weekend with kids out there having fun trick-or-treating. getting the extra hour of sleep. and check the batteries in the smoke detectors. and hello to laura in oak ridge. and just a beautiful day. so it is okay. interesting observation here, 68 again, nice numbers from dan. but dan also reporting 1.8 inches of rain. very common. 1 to 2 inches around the area. i like this comment though from john, toms river, he says, wait a minute, the colors say fall, the temperatures say summer. and some really pretty colors. we appreciate the pictures. nice from charlie too, the fog there. and we have some rain in the area in the city, some threatening clouds. and i will show you the showers

but you can get a sense of the shadows to clouds. winds variable 7 to 24 miles per hour. nicely. 68 to the hamptons. and 70 in white plains. how sweet is that? wanda on the desk was saying, i can't believe i can dress like this and it's almost november. it is warm. it's anywhere from let's see seven to 14 degrees warmer than it was this time yesterday and we're at 71 now. and let's shoot for 73, well above the normal of 60. and sunsets at 5:56. and 73 the normal high for the tail end of summer. and by tomorrow morning, readings north and west will be in the 30s and in the 40s in the city. so we showed you the threatening clouds here. and more into passaic, follow the line and you've got a brief heavy rain pushing through duchess county and the tail end of the front, really the cold air is behind that.

and now the winds change from southwest to northwest and that will bring in the cooler readings so feeling good today. and then a return to normal readings tomorrow, upper 50s to right around 60. and for halloween, calm and creepy. for game three tomorrow, 51, nice and dry. for the kids as they go trick- or-treating, fun-sized, really? nothing fun about that. give them full-sized snickers. 56 at 4:00. and 52 around 8:00. some towns have trick-or-treat or trunk-or-treating earlier and then a 30% chance of a shower on marathon sunday. >> very spooky graphic there. remine mess of the commercial, let's go hide in the cemetery. >> scary. and stephanie tantillo has your tip of the day. >> reporter: hey, everybody. so we are most definitely in fall squash season and we have a lot of different squashes to

look at. today, the carnival squash. first notice the skin. it's so fun. but again, the skin, make sure it's nice and firm and that it feels thick. that's actually a huge indicater of the squash on the quality. and like all, it's heavy for the size. and now when you bring the squash home, store nit a cool, dry place. because it has the thick skin, it will last for a little bit. actually longer than most squashes. but the flavor is nice and mellow. a little bit similar to butternut squash but not as sweet. i like to pair this with a strong flavor, strong cheese or meat or put it with rosemary and cook it up. and i'm stephanie tantillo with your tip of the day. and when we come back,
