>> just heard the sound, boom, boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: people nearby describing the scene as a tense stand-off. >> you hear the police, get down and they yelling. and then just more shot, boom, boom, boom, boom. >> the middle of the night, you hear about five or six gunshots loudly. >> reporter: investigators say newark officers had been patrolling the area when they confronted the suspect, one of them pointing a gun at the officers the. the officers then fired at the suspects but none of the suspects was hit. >> in a routine patrol. and they did come up with individuals. right now, weapons are recovered. and individuals apprehended. >> and you seen some kids on the ground in cust day. >> there were police everywhere and -- in custody. >> there were police everywhere. >> reporter: the incident happening just hours after president barack obama was in newark promoting rehabilitation programs and reducing crime across the country. a problem residents here have long dealt with.

>> reporter: no police officers were hurt during the incident. the prosecutor's office telling us that one of the suspects has been charged with assault against a police officer. both are facing charges of weapon possession. reporting from newark, janelle burrell, cbs 2 news. >> investigators initially thought one of the suspects was injured in the shooting but they confirm no one was hurt. more bad news for mayor de blasio. a new poll gives him his lowest job approval rating ever as new yorkers express dismay as what they see as a drop in quality of life. here's more. >> reporter: file this under more bad news for mayor de blasio, enough to wipe the smile off his face. new yorkers not only don't like the job he's doing as mayor, his approval rating has sunk to the lowest ever but a majority think that the city is headed in the wrong direction, chalk it up to the increasing numbers of the homeless on the street, the the feeling that the mayor doesn't have a handle on crime and the quality of life is

down. a startling 55% a new wall street journal poll say that the city is headed in the wrong direction, the highest number since 2004. >> we had a terrible homeless problem. we resolved it. and now we're going back and we have a homeless problem spreading again. >> reporter: so it's no wonder that governor cuomo is saying he needs to help save the city, come up with state solutions to make new york city more livable. >> we had a terrible violence problem. and we restored order. and now you're seeing police officers assaulted. >> reporter: the mayor's approval rating has sunk to just 38%, his lowest and pollsters say he's losing support among black and latino voter, his base. and on crime, a key issue for voter, 38% approval, 54% disapprove. and 49% say he doesn't deserve a second term. and 42% say he does. and that hasn't stopped him from raising money for another

wide to cross on her own so a stranger tried to help her by grabbing the front wheels of the stroller. >> he grabbed the stroller like this. and i had stuff at the bottom and everything tilted over. >> reporter: the stranger took off after she fell through the gap, plummeting about five feet to the tracks but a passenger jumped into action. >> i went to the fattest end of the platform, you know, next to the train and i climbed down and crawled maybe three or four feet and grabbed the baby and yelled to make sure that the train wasn't going to move. and once they said the train is not going to move, i passed the baby up. >> reporter: he risked it all to save the baby who suffered only a bruise to her forehead and was smiling on the platform just minutes later. she says he never left her side, even after paramedics arrived and she is grateful. >> thank you so much. so much. >> inches from killing myself and didn't even know it. >> reporter: wow. and now how do you feel? >> i feel great. i feel great. i feel like a hero.

at home with her mother in north carolina and is doing great. he says he's had a rocky past and has been on a journey to turn his life around so doing something good for someone outside himself he says is redemption. cbs 2 news. a developing story now. a missing marathoner from italy has been found safe. police say an off-duty police officer recognized him on the number two train after seeing his picture in the newspaper. the 30-year-old went missing after running sunday's marathon. he ran with residents of an addiction rehabilitation center. he is being evaluated at a hospital. it's election day. voters will make their choice in hotly contested races. one race to watch is on staten island as the democrat and the republican face off to see who will succeed republican daniel donnavan.

it comes a year after donnavan impaneled a grand jury that did not indict a police officer in the death of eric garner. on long island, the republican kate murray and the democrat are in a fierce race to succeed cathleen rice as the nassau county district attorney. murray who is also a lawyer has a reputation as an honest town supervisor who delivers on promises. >> in new york, the polls opened at 6:00 this morning and close at 9:00 p.m. in new jersey, you can cast ballots until 9:00 p.m. and connecticut polls are open 6:00 a.m. till 8:00 p.m. tonight. and voters in ohio today will decide whether to legalize both medical and recreational marijuana. but it's not without controversy. it would only allow 10 farms that financially backed the plan. the investigation of what brought down a russian airliner in egypt will focus on the plane's black boxes.

after pope francis was elected. he set up a special commission to examine the vatican's finances. it claims that the investigation found numerous shortcomings and area where is there was no accounting for how money was spent. and he talks about how the rituals are tainted by money like the procedures for canonization, a marketplace in which millions of dollars change hand vatican's response has been two-fold. first a statement attacking them as the fruit of a grave betrayal of the pope's trust. commission. one a priest and the other a expert. they are accused of leaking the information on the commission, including actual recordings of the pope at private meetings. the second book details a lavish life style, like a $26,000 helicopter ride for the
