the body of the 83-year-old was discovered monday afternoon in family's large home here in north sacrifice -- north salem. the scene is a rural setting along the north shore of the reservoir which is part of the new york city water system. the main home where the murder took place is set back if the main road behind a spacious guest house. police are combing the woods along the shoulders of the road here for evidence, possibly a murder weapon. they also have a chopper up combing the banks of the reservoir. the family is well known in new york, society moving in some of the same social circles as the kennedys. police have scheduled a news conference for 2:00. more details on this crime is expected but it's a very, very big deal here. once again, the 83-year-old

murdered in her home here. we will have more on cbs 2 news. lou young, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. a long island high school student tried to go to class today despite being suspended in a sexting scandal. he says he is one of a number of students being punished for simply receiving a text message. still, the school told him to go the home or be arrested. diane macedo has the new information. >> reporter: just a little while ago, we watched as police escorted him out of kings park high school. he is one of 20 students suspended after a sexually explicit video between two teenagers made the rounds of the school. the 15-year-old walked into school without incident this morning but about an hour late, the principal called his father. >> his son is suspended from school as you know. could you please come and pick him up. >> what happens if i don't? >> you know what's going to happen.

>> reporter: he says he has yet to receive an official notification and aj insists it's unfair to begin with. >> i don't think i should have gotten suspended at all. i can't someone from sending a text. >> reporter: he says his son didn't watch the video but was still suspended for being part of a group chat. >> last night i got a threatening phone call from the detective precinct that if my son goes to school, we will be arrested. >> reporter: officers told him if he didn't allow them to escort his son out, they would pathing. through being arrested. he did nothing wrong. >> reporter: and other students criticize the school's actions. >> we didn't ask to see it. they kind of just came to us and everyone is curious about it. >> people that send it around, i understand that. but people that receive it, it's not right. >> reporter: he says he's upset because none of the football

he says because they are in the play-office. we are told the administration is behind closed doors and can't give us information. as for the students who made the video, it's not clear what will happen with the girl involved. police say the two boys made it are 14 years old, they go to smithtown high school and they are now facing criminal charges. diane macedo, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. several schools are closed today after a fire ripped through an abandoned building in new jersey. lingering problems. we are live in paterson with details for us here at noon. active scene. the fire has been going since about 11:00 last night. the smoke so bad they had to close six area schools. it's a five-alarm fire that burned through the night and on market street. the fire started in the

basement, spreading throughout the entire structure. he recorded some of it while on his way to the school. >> that's when i seen the fire. >> reporter: fire officials aren't saying how it started but we know it's an abandoned building that once housed a national guard headquarters in the 1980s. neighbors say there's been talk of turning the structure into a recreation center over the last few years but lately it's been a hangout for drug addicts. >> if there ain't no shooting and killing, it's burning down stuff. >> the one next to my house caught fire a couple weeks ago. somebody is burning down the buildings. i don't know what's going on. >> reporter: you can see the firefighters getting pizza bringing them food as they are fighting the fire in the rain. and that woman you just heard from, the family had been evacuated from their apartment building in the middle of the night and they are getting help

from the red cross. we are live in paterson, emily smith, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. the nypd has released a photo of the man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting in manhattan. police have identified this man as one of the suspects, he is a 27-year-old. investigators say a drug deal gone wrong on path street led to the shooting. he -- on 35th street led to the shooting. they allegedly followed the victims to a subway entrance before opening fire. rallies across the country today as workers demand an increase in minimum wage to $15 an hour for all employees. janelle burrell is live in harlem where one demonstration is taking place. >> reporter: the rally here on west 125th street just starting to wrap up but they have been billing this as the largest series of rallies nationwide today. and they chose to have the

next year's presidential election, urging candidates to pay close attention and recognize the 16 million minimum wage workers in the u.s. as a key voting block. from rain-soaked protesters in the heart of harlem -- [ chanting ] >> reporter: to the pre-dawn chants in downtown brooklyn, hundreds this morning calling for lawmakers and candidates to increase minimum wage to $15 an hour nationwide. >> i have three kids. so it's really, really hard to support them with the minimum wage. >> reporter: nancy flores makes $9 an hour working at mcdonald's in long island. the new york state wage board approved fast food workers earning $15 an hour by 2018 and in new york city and it will be phased in statewide by 2021. but they want the change to happen sooner and across the country for all jobs.

>> it's really hard for me as a mom. >> i was making $9 an hour. 15 years later, i'm making 25 cents less. >> reporter: but business owners and managers says paying employees that much more would hurt their already struggling profit margin. >> retail went down. the it's not the -- down. it's not the same as last year. we're not doing the same amount as two years back. and even the rent is high. >> every time the minimum wage gets increased, we hear claims that businesses will suffer. >> reporter: mayor blast black a long-time supporter of the proposal spoke among the protesters this morning there. are also rallies taking place on the steps of city halls in some of the key battleground election states later today. this group will make their way to the financial district for an additional rally this evening. reporting live this afternoon

from harlem, janelle burrell, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. police released new video of a man they say punched a woman in the middle of a supermarket. investigators say last month, the man and woman had an argument inside the supermarket when he punched her in the face. the woman was taken to the hospital where he was treated for a cut to her forehead. government intelligence experts believe that what brought down the russian jetliner over the egyptian peninsula was no accident. security officers have reportedly questioned hotel workers and those involved in catering. british officials have said it's more likely than not that a bomb brought the plane down. the former new york state assembly man has died. he died last night at memorial hospital where he was being treated for cancer for several years. he was once one of the most powerful officials in the state

until a sexual harassment scandal forced him to resign in 2013. he denied the allegations. he was 74 years old. still much more ahead here on cbs 2 news at noon. >> stop! stop! the officer fired two stops. she is then seen ignoring commands while yelling. police use a tazer to finally arrest her. and she told officers she had smoke meth. this just in, the international olympic committee is asking for action against russia following a scathing report on widespread doping among athletes. russia could be banned from competing from the 2016 olympics and stripped of previous medals. >> reporter: she won gold in the 800-meters in london's 2012 olympics and now she along with nine other athletes and coaches faces a lifetime ban. the world anti-dope thing agencies report name as suspected cheats. the american runner was beaten by a russian. we reached her on skype. >> more than anything, you can never give me back those moments. >> reporter: championships and

ever the russians won are now being reassessed. the report says not only athletes were involved but so were russian anti-doping officials and even the state security services. the report alleges that russians engaged in systemic doping, took bribes to conceal test results and destroyed incriminating samples. the head of the u.s. anti- doping agency -- >> the everyday here does not suggest anything another than a state-supporting system to win at all costs and rob clean athletes on the global playing field. >> reporter: sport and performance enhancement goes back a long way, back the the soviet union. when winning on the world stage was seen not only as a sporting but also as a political victory. in modern russia too, president vladimir putin leading by example has put sport front and

shoppers and caving to demands to bring back the traditional santa set. and even starbucks toned down its christmas cups to plain red, leaving people asking, what's wrong with celebrating the true meaning of the season? >> i've always loved the holiday cups and it feels less christmas-y. >> reporter: and alex doesn't celebrate christmas but says that's no reason she shouldn't be surrounded by the cheer. >> i'm not a christian and i love christmas as a tradition. >> reporter: the bryant park corporation is taking a stand against those that want to quash christmas. they'll be playing religious music on the skating rink. >> we thought it was mean spirited to take the religion out of christmas. so even all the decision makers who were involved in this happened to be jewish, we said, why have a secular christmas? >> reporter: of course, there's still the christmas tree waiting for decorations and even these red cups some say are sufficient.

clouds and fog keeping us close together. 50 to 58. it's more of a spread to the north and west. and i want to focus on some of these pictures because i appreciate this. making the point, what a mess. this is brooklyn. very slippery. even if you have all-wheel drive, wet leaves are tricky. and this is a good one from bruce. bruce, a faithful foe the toe journalist there because you can see the water pooling, blocked drains. yeah, i degree. this is the way to spend the day, great napping weather. if you have to face it, after school, going to be foggy and wet in the area. and if the wipers are on, make sure the lights are too. and we will turn the lights on now. and we are good to go because you want to make sure that you can be seen as well. 56, rain and fog. and seems somewhat oxymoronic in the fact that we have a wind but it's a moisture, rich, cold, damp wind out of the east.

we're shooting for 60 today. and you don't see a huge spread here, 52 to around 58 in the area. 59 now for the jersey shore. 60 the hoped for high. 3 and 27 the records for the day. it's a gray day. heaviest rain to the east. and we are starting to see nice rain for orange, westchester and rockland as well. and this line weakens a bit, south shore but it will hold together and push through the hamptons and up into wading river. going to be a slow drive home tall way out to wading river this afternoon. and then we wait for this next low that's going to ride through pennsylvania. models are stalling it a bit. and also bringing in a little bit more heavy rain. and now you see the green there? that's anywhere from .25 to .50, but parts of the jersey shore dealing with well over an inch. this is ocean. and there's more where that came from which is good. our deficit this year, 8.86. and here's what the models are
