want to say this. there is a slight chance for patchy black ice west of the cautious on the roadways. they're wet and might be slick. the skies will be clearing and sunshine returns by mid-day. i expect mostly sunny skies to end the weekend. by 91, 47 feels like 44 and mostly sunny by three this afternoon. pretty much where we should be. it feels like 47 and by 9 tonight, under clear skies and 42 will feel like french and dropping from there. thank you. now this morning, police have reopened part of interstate 287 in new jersey after a deadly crash and three people were killed when a passenger van, a car, and punted with a trailer carried -- and a pickup truck

with a trailer carrying cows collided. 16 people were taken to the hospital and some say a number of cattle from the trailer were thrown across the roadway and several did not survive. the cause of the crash is under investigation. and we're learning more about a possible motive in a deadly shooting at a colorado planned parenthood clinic. >> law enforcement sources say the suspected gunman told them, quote, no more baby bartsa -- baby parts after the arrest. >> reporter: a plea for help from a police officer at the planned parenthood clinic in colorado springs. officials say the suspected gunman, 57-year-old robert dear, moved calmly and methodically as he shot and killed three, wounding 9. colorado spries mayor john suthers said police monitored cameras. >> they were able to trace the

movements and inform the officers and the s.w.a.t. team about those movements. >> reporter: dear reportedly sat down in a chair when he realized he was cornered and yelled out he was surrendering. surveillance video shows officers with body shields moving patrons to safety. this man was sitting out front in his car when he said dear walked up to the window and shot through the glass. >> and i saw myself in the mirror. oh, my god. >> investigators are combing through dear's trailers for clues and he lived in this rural area 60 miles west of colorado springs. over the years, he's lied in remote trailers and cabins in the -- he's lived in remote trailers and cabins in the carolinas. the only shooting victim identified is 44-year-old police officer garrett swayse. he was on duty friday at the university of colorado where he worked when he heard the calls

of shots fired. he rushed to the scene. a pastor at swayse's church was there when his wife rachael told her two young children their dad died. >> the cries and sobs of her children learning their daddy was never returning is something that will probably be etched in my mind the rest of my life. >> reporter: before becoming a police officer, swayse was a figure skater who competed in the 1995 national championships and won a junior national title in 1992. the former u.s. national champion nancy kerrigan said she and sways estated together as kids. >> fun, funny, a true friend very loyal and loving, caring person. >> sources say the suspected gunman is no stranger to the law enforcement court records show a re straining order and allegation of domestic violence is -- and he's due back in

the nypd stepped up patrols at clinics. the governor announced yesterday said new security measures were implemented across the state. abortion rights advocates rallied yesterday in union square. demonstrators chanted that abortion is not murder and held signs condemning the shootings. about three dozen people took part in the rally. the nypd said that an accused rapist is off of the streets. they arrested the 28-year-old paul phils after he turned -- paul niles after he turned himself in yesterday. he allegedly raped a woman after jogging on wednesday. another woman has come forward claiming niles groped her earlier that a. he now faces rape and robbery charges. and happening today, the fire department will hand out smoke alarms at the scene of a fire that killed an elderly

ilana gold has more with us. >> reporter: it started. the fire started yesterday morning at east 49th street and investigators said the house did not have working smoke alarms and that is why they're handing them out today. the deadly fire has shaken up the neighborhood. the flames started shooting from the home at 5:30 on saturday morning. investigators said a power chord in the dining room is to blame. and they were found dead on the second floor. they grabbed a ladder and they tell us they watched her 19- year-old son jump from a different window and he's recovering from severe burns. >> well, the -- to fill the smoke and fire on two floors. the first and second floor. >> reporter: just a few hours, brooklyn borrough president eric adams and the fdny are anything to be here teaching the community about electrical

not making their way in but making their way out. the skies are clearing and it's going to be a very nice weekend, although it will be much colder in comparison to where we have been the past few days. cooling down and clearing on out. that is the trend for t. let's go ahead, shall we, and take you live outside and show you a blue sky beyond the cloud cover. it's mostly cloudy in central park, we're down to 37 degrees and winds are out of the north at 12 miles per hour. what can you expect from this forecast today and beyond? a few showers this morning are making their exit. skies are clearing and it will stay cool. seasonably cool with highs around 50. and a chilly start to the workweek tomorrow morning and through the day. temperatures will be warmer from the 20s and into the low and mid-40s for us. very chilly to start your workweek and rain moves in mid- week. and we need the rain. we have falling out there now and it's not nearly enough to dent the deficit on the vortex satellite and radar picture.

the showers make their exit off in the southeast direction and know clear skies to the north of the city, we can expect a lot more sunshine as the state progresses. as the cold front gets forced to the south by a big area of high pressure. so, chilly air making its way in and with the clearer skies. for today, clearing and cooler. highs around 50. tomorrow, very cold start to your workweek. here's the situation tomorrow. we start off with a lot of sun. because of the position of the high pressure system, winds are in off of the water. east. the sunshine to start will lead to increasing clouds throughout the day with the increased moisture with winds in off of the water. and then on said it, the forecast turns down. and there is a system approaching from the west and another up the coast and going to be soggy and we need it. clouds turning to sunshine, 50 degrees the high and that is where we should be. winds out of the north at 5 to 15.

to be cooler and we will see sunshine today and so, they're balancing themselves out a smidge and 37 in the city. 33 now in sparta; 27 in mont cello and mel bar and --ble mar and greenwich in the 30s and ranges between 20 degrees and 22 degrees cooler and as you look at the vortex, satellite and radar pictures, showers are moving off and clearer skies building on in the second half of the day is mostly sunny and temperatures warming to ason -- seasonable levels and around the 50 degrees mark. by noon, 47 and feeling like 44 and mostly sunny and 50 feels like 47 and under mostly sunny skies and 4:30, sunset by 6 and 45 feels like 40 and skies are clear. and coming up, we'll talk about the temps to start the week. they'll be cold and a mid-week soaker. back to you.

and happening today, the fire department will hand out smoke alarms at the scene of a fire that killed a couple in brooklyn. >> ilana gold has more from flatbush. >> reporter: this morning, the fdny is going to hand out smoke detectors on the same block where the fire started. this is where two people were found dead yesterday morning, on east 49th street and church avenue. investigators said this home didn't have working smoke alarms. this is video where the flames were shooting from the home yesterday morning at 5:30. and a husband and wife in their 70s got trapped in the bedrooms upstairs and couldn't escape. a neighbor got a ladder and rescued their daughter screaming for help. witnesses said her 19-year-old son jumped from a window and has bad burns across his body. police say a power cord in the dining room caused the fire and there were no working smoke alarms, something the neighbors

setting dozens of end use flags on fire outside of a home in queens. surveillance video shows the man setting fire to 40 flags in front of the home in woodhaven and that happened after 1:00 a.m. on thursday. and the incident is being investigated as a hate grime. and the nypd reviewed -- a hate crime. and suspects jumped an 18- year-old after he withdrew cash from a deli atm. and they got away with his wallet and not cash. the victim put his money in the pocket and not the wallet. the men ended up getting away with a dollar. and the nypd have a clear picture of a cell phone thief because he used the 79 to snap a selfie. it was set up to back up photos automatically. and the victim said he was

texting on the phone while riding a q train and the alleged thief grabbed the phone from his hands and ran off. and the -- on full display in brooklyn. and the lafayette avenue street sign at the intersection of malcolm x boulevard has a extra y in it. the sign needs to be fixed, say residents. >> and that is hilarious, but i am -- and that is nothing unusual. a lot of things are misspelled around here. >> and supposed to change it. >> the department of transportation has not said when the sign will be replaced. a newborn found abandoned in a christmas manger display may have a place to call home. according to several reports, some parishioners are interested in adopting the baby boy. a church custodian found the infant on monday and the boy is in the custody of child welfare authorities. the queens prosecutors decided they won't charge the baby's mother in the case.

what are the main things you tell your students to get ready for hanukkah? >> it celebrates a miracle with olive oil and burn for seven days, even with only eight days and one day supply. anything cooked in olive oil is a traditional way of simplizing that miracle. >> and there are eight days, right, in the celebration.

how do you decide when to make a big meal when you're supposed to have a smaller meal or can you do whenever you want? >> there are no rules. >> love it. >> and in my family, it's always hardy meals in the winter time that include foods like this. >> and you brought several examples of great foods. >> yeah. >> and walk us through it. >> traditional latkas are potato pancakes. i have an easier method. put them in a blender with some onions and seasoning and make a batter. >> oh. very nice. >> and like flapjacks. >> and at the natural gourmet institute, we use more health supported foods than simply fried mainstream foods. >> right. >> and these wild rice pancakes made with whole grapes and 50% julienne fresh -- whole grains and julienne fresh vegetables.
