elise finch is here with the forecast. >> we've had a couple crisp mornings, so this is no exception. overall, it's a pretty quiet weather. current temperatures. 10 degrees cooler as we head into the hamptons. that's just a cold 22 degrees. 28 in sparta and new york city checking in at 41 degrees. your vortex satellite and radar not showing a lot of activity. an area of high pressure that is dominating the weather. things are quiet and by that, i mean dry. and really what happens with this area of high pressure is monday. about other than those temperatures and then of course we will be watching a system that could bring us some rain. here is your hour by hour forecast for this saturday. expecting high temperature of 52 degrees. we get that with plenty of sunshine and that will feel

overall, not a bad day once we get past the morning chill. with that, we'll send it back to you. >> we have new details into the investigation of the mass shooting in san bernardino, california. >> tashfeen malik and her husband, syed farouk -- ayala has more. >> officials are now saying they tried to destroy their digital fingerprints before the attack. this morning, there are so many questions about why they did this and police don't know the motive behind the massacre. the fbi classified the holiday party massacre as an act of terrorism. cbs news has learned that just before the attack, 28-year-old tashfeen malik used an alias on facebook to pledge her support to isis and its leader. >> so far, we have no indication that these killers

group or form part of a cell. >> so far, there's no indication that isis directed or ordered the attack. malik and her husband, syed farouk ambushed and killed 14 people on wednesday. the survivors are explaning the terrifying moments and hiding to avoid bullets. >> instinct kicks in. adrenaline kicks in. >> i saw before i went under my table, people going under their tables throughout the room. >> investigators are now turning to electronic evidence to search for a possible motive, including the couple's two smashed cell phones found in a dumpster. on friday, cameras were allowed inside their home. syed farouk's family says they had no idea about the attack. his sister describes them as quiet. >> do you think your brother deserves to be forgiven? >> that's a hard question.

just because of what he did. >> and last night, hundreds gathered to pray for the victims at a church. the vigil, an emotional one for ryan reyes who honored. >> it's been very, very difficult and very, very trying and i know that once it all officially sinks in, it's really going to hit home. >> so many people in that community are shaken up after what happened. now last night, police in california were investigating a suspicious package that was addressed to the gunman's home. a ups delivery driver saw this. the facility was evacuated and the bomb squad was called in. it turns out, it wasn't a danger to the public. we're live in the newsroom, cbs 2 news. >> iowaayala, thank you. and it is getting high profile help. mayor de blasio visited the muslim center in queens for the first time ever yesterday. help erase the stigma against

paper to call for greater gun the editorial recommends reducing the number of firearms and eliminating large ammunition. the publisher said they made a move to display frustration and anguish about our country's inability to come to terms with discourage of guns. after sources say he was attacked by a gang member. the department of corrections says an inmate punched the officer several times in the face last night. sources say the attack was unprovoked and part of a gang scheme. investigators say a captain hurt his hand while helping the officer. both were taken to the hospital. >> and the hunt is on for three people who police say robbed a disabled man on staten island. investigators released these images of suspects. police say it happened on november 20 in front of a shopping center on forest avenue. the 18-year-old victim says a man and a woman approached him and asked him for money while

the first two suspects tried searching the victim's pockets for money, but came up empty handed. >> a court appointed trustee began distributing $1.19 billion to bernie madoff's fraud victims. the latest payoff will mean that his clients received 1.16 billion so far. next week marks the 7th anniversary for one of the biggest ponzi schemes in history. he is serving a 150 year prison term. get ready for a toll hike at the hudson river. starting tomorrow morning, it will cost you more to cross the bridges between new york and new jersey. ez pass users will pay $12.50 during peek hours and $10.50 off peek. truck drivers using cash get hit the hardest. they'll have to hand over $126. >> time now is 6:07.

general manager has cancer. the team put out a statement saying it's very treatable and the 68-year-old will soon begin chemotherapy. doctors are optimistic about his fullrecovery. he will continue his work as general manager. the team didn't say what kind of cancer alderson has. >> the faa says new laser christmas light displays can be dangerous to pilots. on thursday night, the faa says an american airlines boeing 737 was struck by a laser near dallas' airport. police traced the beam back to a laser light. decorated home nearby. experts say if you buy laser light displays, make sure they are pointed at the home and not at the sky. >> it's also a busy time for thieves and many of them have been spotted on home security cameras taking boxes off of people's doorsteps. >> as brian shows us, there are simple ways you can protect your packages.

we have mostly clear skies, 41 degrees. winds out of the north, northwest at 5 miles per hour. it's not terrible in the city, but we have colder temperatures. we have quite a few locations below freezing. what we also have is a calm weekend ahead. by that, i mean a dry weekend, not a lot to talk about there. we were expecting bright sunny skies today and as we head into the warmth of the day, we are really expecting to see some above normal temperatures. so, overall, looking for a high today of 52 degrees. that puts us 5 degrees above the norm. expecting to make it to 52. it's not a record. that would be 70 degrees. still, not a bad day at all. 7:04, that's the sunrise, and again expecting to get to 52 degrees today. a nice december day by anybody's standards. so we take a lack at your vortex satellite and radar. there's just not much to look at here. we are under the influence of high pressure.

calm, pretty dry and quiet for us. tapping into some cooler air this morning, but again, warm up pretty nicely. tomorrow, warmer still. so we'll call today a december delight. i don't think you can have any complaints about the weather we're about to get today, especially on a saturday. we head into tomorrow, even warmer as we head toward the first night of hanukkah. we are talking about a really nice weekend out there. now we do have our eye on one system that could potentially bring us clouds, maybe a couple rain drops on tuesday. monday even looks nice and that particular system trending to the south. so we may not see anything out of it at all. so today we have the bright sky, light winds, 52 degrees. winds out of the northwest. today is a beauty. tonight's lows, we will see cold temperatures, but not nearly as cold as we are seeing right now. we do have a few locations below the freezing mark. that we're expecting tonight.

terms of where you start the day tomorrow and then it's even warmer tomorrow afternoon than it will be today. so 57 degrees is what we're expecting for your sunday afternoon. and here's your seven-day forecast. we go from 52 degrees today to 57 for your sunday. monday is not a bad day either. we start to see a little bit of cloud cover late in the day. 54 degrees. above where we should be. we head into tuesday, that's the day we are keeping an eye on. a couple models have it diving to the south. before, it looked like it would bring us a soaking, maybe not so much now. coastal areas could see some clouds out of that system. and then wednesday is looking good. thursday, friday, we have a trio of more 50-degree days. >> december. nearly 60 degrees tomorrow. that's crazy. >> it is indeed, enjoy it if you can. >> sports this morning, the jets and the giants face off at met life stadium tomorrow and

straight ahead, but first meteorologist, elise finch is in for alyssa. you brought some good weather. >> i did. >> it's all you. >> i packed it in my bag and i brought it with me this good morning. it really is. this is a good weekend. we're joking, but not bad. we're off to a chilly start, but we'll warm up nicely. liberty. 33 in mt. vernon. 31 for islip and 20s for river head, still at 22. so we're talking about a number of locations that are below the freezing mark. so yeah, it's a super cold morning out there. unless you're in the city. we'll go with that. we warm up nicely today and we get very few complications. take a look. just not a lot to look at. high pressure is really dominating and so things are really going to be dry for us through monday when we start to see some cloud cover as we watch a system, but today, tomorrow, looking like a very nice weekend.

she was 18 to escape islamic extremism. she moved to california where she mar moved to california and had three children. she was scheduled to give a presentation to her coworkers on the day she was killed. police arrested a man during wednesday's lighting of the christmas tree. police say the suspect was wearing a t-shirt with a department logo. they say 42-year-old, juan gomez, had a gold shield about his neck, silver handcuffs and a fake photo id. officers stationed on a rooftop spotted him. a long island plan pled not guilty. an arsenal of them in his home and car. mark lied when he told them he was a federal air marshal. they pulled him over on jericho turnpike. they found 500 rounds of ammunition.

more than 8,000 rounds of ammunition at his home. >> new this morning. one of rapper nikki manaj cease brothers was arrested for rape charges. he is seen here was charged with raping a child under the age of 13. court documents allege he engaged with intercourse for at least three months. he is out of jail on $100,000 bail. there's a battle brewing in new jersey over patriotism and christmas spirit. lights were recently strung from a flag pole in ruther forford to look like a christmas tree. he says if the flag were lowered to half staff, it would have touched the lights, violating federal law. >> this should not be touching anything. the ground, water, any merchandise. >> we talked to veterans to make sure everything was okay. and they said they used to decorate the flag poles on their shift before they went out to sea.

lights insist the flag could have been lowered without touching the lights. pastries and cookies put a smile on people's faces, but one organization is now making the sweets for a very good cause. they have a dozen chefs baking cookies, all inspired by a little boy's brave fight against cancer. >> alex dennis has the story. >> it all started with a brave little boy. 96,000 cookies and an unfair diagnosis. >> my son, liam, was 2 1/2 years old when he was diagnosed with cancer. >> facing the fight of their lives. gretchen and her husband, larry, were shocked to learn that childhood cancer is the number one cause of death. >> it receives less than 3- pennys of every dollar that is

less than 3-pennys. with the help of liam who dreamt of being a chef, they hosted a bake sale to raise money. the initial sale brought in $400,000 for research. they created cookies for kids cancer. unfortunately at the sage of 6. liam's four-yearlong fight came to an end. his story still inspires people nationwide. >> we're not doctors and nurses. we're not on the front line. to be able to be involved is special for us. >> 15 pastry chefs will gather and bake treats in liam's memory for a day of family fun fundraiser on december 5. >> it is a cookie palooza where you walk in and it's a wonderland of things to do. >> she won't slow down, driven by one thought. >> when i see him again, i know that the very first question he's going to ask me is mommy,

his dysfunctional family coming to battle a christmas monster. this one is rated pg-13. >> sounds like your average celebration. christmas celebration. all right, time now to check in with elise finch. >> good morning. and the forecast is looking pretty good. we've got some chilly temperatures out there right now, but things are looking to warm up very nicely as we get into the day. let's check in with some of our weather watchers and see what kind of numbers we are seeing and some of them are incredibly cold as we start out in parts of new jersey. steds a 28-degree reading from tony. so, i mean, we're talking well below the freezing mark here. and still, 38, this is from bruce in north port. 38 degrees and he says today looks like a crisp, beautiful day. great for doing anything outdoors. you just have to get through this morning where people are dealing with freezing temperatures. then it will be all of those things bruce just said.
