this fire that not only went through all three stories of this house where it started but it also damaged these two neighboring houses melting the siding right off the back, and now that firefighters finally have this fire out, they're trying to figure out what caused it. >> residents all over this elmhurst queens neighborhood say they woke up to a popping sound like fire crackers. >> my aunt opened the door, and then she heard it too, and then i was like i'm hearing sounds. it's like popping, something like that. when she opened the door it was a big fire in front of us. >> that fire started at 4267 ketcham street. the call came in at 4:24 this morning. >> there was advanced fire on arrival, so that was the biggest challenge. >> we had six civilians, one was serious, transported to cornell with burns, approximately 30-year-old female. the other ones are smoke inhalation. one was a female, 12 years old. >> a neighbor who didn't want to go on camera shot this video

saw that 12-year-old jump from the 2nd floor window just minutes before flames started shooting out of it. this friend of the family says she was at the house just yesterday to pray with her 80- year-old god mother who lives there with her daughters and grandchildren. >> she's not answering the phone, so i have to drop everything and just find her. it's sad but i hope she's okay. >> the fire even melted the siding off two neighboring house. >> emon and her roommate shot this video from her window as they waited for the fire department. >> i was so scared. it was scary because i don't know how we could get out of the house. i was like there's no way to get out. it's in our face. it was too hot. >> luckily the fire department was able to subdue the fire enough to get everyone in those neighboring houses out safely and quickly. as for the residents rescued from this house where the fire started, the fire chief says they were semiconscious from smoke inhalation and that one

condition has burns to her face and abdomen. there were three firefighters injured in this fire, though they're expected to be okay. now the fdny is investigating. we still don't know what caused this fire. we also don't know if there were working smoke alarms in the house. we will continue to keep you updated as we have more information. thank you. now to a developing story in westchester county. chopper 2 is over the scene. an entire town is without water as crews try to repair a sinkhole. elise finch live in pleasantville with details for us. >> reporter: chris the 100-year- old water main broke shortly after midnight, and just take a look behind me, not only did it immediately impact water pressure here in pleasantville, it also created this sinkhole. it's roughly 12 by 15 feet wide and 5 feet deep right here on the corner of marble avenue and castleton street. gushing water eroded the sand and concrete surrounding it causing the pavement above to collapse.

water main to stop the flow of water so they could start making repairs. the pleasantville village administrator told me 100 residents and businesses are still without water this noon. crews here on the scene tell me the water main itself should be replaced shortly, and water will be restored by the end of the business day. the sinkhole, however, will take locker to fix -- longer to fix. >> repair the water main. then i have to shore up the youths, and then bring in k crete, fill it in with k crete and put in the pavement. it's going to be a couple days by the time we're finished. now the water main break and the resulting sinkhole are being blamed on the age of the pipes, plus normal wear and tear. live in pleasantville this noon, elise finch, cbs2 news. thank you. san bernardino county employees returned to work as investigators try to figure out what motivated a husband and

people at a holiday party. chris martinez has more from san bernardino. >> federal investigators are examining items taken from the home of syed farook's childhood friend. the assault rifles used in the attacks have been traced to marquez. the 29-year-old reportedly checked into a mental health facility after the shooting. >> he would go with syed and work on the cars. they were happy. they joked around. you could see them laughing. >> investigators have interviewed hundreds of people trying to determine why farook and his wife tashfeen malik opened fire on his co-workers during a holiday party last week. farook's father told cbs news his son spoke about tensions at the san bernardino health department. malik pledged her allegiance to isis on facebook. >> the building where the shooting happened remains closed but thousands of san bernardino county employees

>> we held each other, and we protected each other through this horrific event, and we will continue to hold each other. >> across san bernardino community members gathered sunday in churches and mosques to pay tribute to the victims. at a growing memorial near the shooting scene people of all faiths left flowers and lit candles. 14 people died and 21 were hurt in the worst terror attack on u.s. soil since 9/11. chris martinez cbs news. >> in a prime time address last night president obama says there was no evidence the shooters were districted by a terrorist group overseas. the department's clergy all in conference is taking place at 1 police plaza. police commissioner bill bratton spoke this morning he focused on community involvement and the nypd counter terrorism program. the terror threat against the united states has entered a

massacre in california. the president addressed the nation last night just days after the mass shooting that killed 14 people and injured 21. in his third oval office address, the president called on congress to ban anyone on the no fly list from buying guns and restrict sales of assault rifles like those used in san bernardino. the president warned the nation that isis threatens us all but the government will do everything it can to stop attacks by people inspired by the terrorist group. paul ryan criticized the speech as disappointing and that it defended a failing policy. stay with cbs2 news for the latest on the investigation into the mass shooting. we will have another update on afternoon. the u.s. department of justice is launching a civil rights probe into the chicago police department. attorney general loretta lynch says the investigation will focus on the department's use of force including use of deadly force as well as accountability within the department. calls for the federal probe

showed officer jason van dyke shooting 17-year-old laquan mcdonald 16 times last year. van dyke is charged with first degree murder. authorities are already conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting. a wreath laying ceremony took place this morning at the intrepid air and sea space museum. one of the many events in the area marking this pearl harbor day. today marks the 74th anniversary of the japanese attack. former president jimmy carter says he is cancer-free. >> when i went this week, they didn't find any cancer at all so i have good news. >> the former president revealed yesterday the results of a recent brain scan. the 91-year-old started treatment for melanoma in august after doctors found tumors on his liver and brain. he was also treated with immunotherapy drug. >> great news there. >> coming up on cbs2 at noon,

new york frame of mind on tuesday. then we're right back above normal as we work our way through the end of the week. mostly sunny and 50. winds are calm, relative humidity at 46%. these very mild numbers on average, 50 to 53 or 4. there is some cooler air to the north, area of low pressure will tap into that, so tomorrow we're a little closer to where we should be, but we're still above normal by a degree of 2. 54, well above normal today, 75 and 10 the records. sunsets at 4:28, hanukkah time as well. around 52. i tell you you look at these numbers, it's hard to realize that winter is 14 days away. we're so close to it but yeah, frosty the snowman is working on his tan because there's just no snow out there. the lament is anybody in the snow removal business or news. how about this.

that's just particular matter we're watching that. here's what we're watching sky wise, a few more clouds into parts of orange county and for you. a system to the south, another system to the due south and one to the southwest. they will congeal. there will be an area of low pressure off the coast, but that area of low pressure, all it does is the rotation around, that will bring in some clouds, we're flirting with some showers, maybe a 20% chance of a shower for eastern long island, and that's about it tomorrow. with the warm front on thursday, can't rule out a stray shower, but the odds are low. oh, and that warm front, yeah, it's warm. warmer back by friday you're up to 56 and this weekend, 55 to 60 degrees. i'm loving it, but anybody that wants -- no this is not good news. >> if you thought this big crowd was here for you, i'm sorry. >> thanks johnny. >> to find out the weather anytime download the cbs2 weather app.
