john elliot has an eye on the coverage this noon. >> the national weather service did allow dense fog to expire but there are still pockets of dense fog. visibility improving. still nasty fog in western parts of chester and fairfield county and new jersey. let's switch gears and talk about that getting worse part affiliated with this area of low pressure trailing front. it's a really nasty day in the upper lakes dealing with ice and snow. between now and 17 or 8 it's light rain and it will be warmer with the push out of the south but by 9 tonight we see bands of showers pushing through and heavy rain is going to be the case on again off again. isolated thunderstorm possible too as we work our way into your first part of your tuesday and the wind will fill in. brighter conditions and a lot cooler.

in a bit. >> okay john thank you. police officers in bergen county opened fire. it happened in the park. ilana gold joins us. >> there are so many questions why police shot this suspect all right by route 17. take a look at the scene. police are out here trying to get some answers. the problem started right by the suspect's car off in the distance and they tell us he was armed with a bb gun. police investigating a shooting involving two of their own and a 46-year-old suspect named mad crew chaseman. it happened right off of route 17 during some sort of confrontation. they found a bb gun at the scene painted over to make it look like a real weapon. >> i heard gunshots at 3:00 a.m.

>> five to seven in a row. >> the sound woke up kim. she lives down the block and called 911. she looked out the window to see what happened. >> a million cop cars and detectives. it's scary it happened right outside your back door. >> investigators say the problems initially started when matthew chaseman of new jersey crashed his car here early this morning. it's sitting outside of an office building. the back window of his sedan is shattered. a security guard saw him sitting in the vehicle after the crash and called police. it's unclear if he opened fire at officers when they arrived or what prompted the violent him several times. the injuries are not life threatening and officers were not hurt. he couldn't ignore the crime scene as soon as he stepped outside. he lives across the street and

>> i don't want my boys being exposed to anything like this. >> the neighbors also don't want this and want answers about the officer involved shooting right by their homes. >> i'm completely shocked. nothing like this ever happens here. ever. >> back out here live where police are investigating an officer involved shooting right by route 17. the off ramp is shut down because of the police activity the next few hours. police could have an update later on this afternoon. live in new jersey this afternoon cbs 2 news. >> thank you. new at noon three people are hurt after a basement collapse in brooklyn this morning in williamsburg in the 100 block of wilson street. two workers were trapped and had to be dug out with shovels. they all have serious injuries. now they are looking at the structural stability of the home. was it justified?

and killing three bears in his back yard. live at noon christine is live. >> the 78-year-old man is in this municipal court behind me for shooting and killing bears out of season. this is a civil case brought by the state. several people have testified and the man himself is expected to take to the stand and explain to the judge why he did this. initially he told cbs 2 news it was in self-defense. >> did your report indicate that the bear was scratching at the window. >> no. >> does your report indicate that the bear refused to move away from the door? >> no. >> the attorney representing him saying his client was defending his wife when he shot and killed a bear and two cubs. the adult bear found dead on he's contesting foursomeon filed against him.

new jersey division of fish and wildlife he took several pictures after responding to the scene reporting no signs of aggression by the adult bear. >> whether or not he shot the bear or had a loaded gun within proximity of the neighboring houses with the intent to shoot a bear and whether or not it was in or out of bear season. case. >> 78-year-old ailing spoke to cbs 2 news after shooting the bears last year. >> it stood up and looked at me and got distracted and turned it's head and i shot it. >> again ailing expected to get on the stand and explain why he killed those bears to a judge. started last week as bear jersey. and that is a state sponsored bear hunt. we are live in an dover new

thank you. dog owners say someone is poisoning their pets. dogs have died after normal walks in their neighborhood. one woman said she found teal round pellets in bird seed and it turned out to be rat poison. >> it seemed like someone is purposely doing this. >> someone is poisoning all of the animals not just the dogs. they are poisoning all of the animals. investigating. the bronx. a customer held at gunpoint at automotive collision on east chester road in mars park. one ordered the victims to the back of the room and the other went looking for money. they took off with $2,000. today marks the third

shooting in newtown, connecticut. he killed his mother and 26 people before killing himself. today it's on a school day. they note over public address before a moment of silence. there will be no public rememberances but a gathering tonight at the church. fighters have directed the second largest city for a year and a half and they are trying to grab more territory. charlie reports from nearby iraq. >> colonel and his forces have been fighting to hold this front line for more than a year. they attack wherever they can, sometimes three or four nights in a row. in fact he told us that very morning three suicide bombers charged towards their out post. his soldiers were able to kill the drivers before they detonated their explosives but

new rules seem to take effect for anyone who operates a drone. >> the f.a.a. announcing drone devices have to be registered through a federal website. janel has more. >> chris and mary 89 of the 240 close call collisions between drones and airplanes nationwide have happened in the tristate area and a way to hold drone operator accountable and make sure the f.a.a. knows who is problem. starting next monday drone owners have to go to a federal website and pay $5 to register

in a phone announcement f.a.a. officials said this new rule will apply for drones half a pound to 55-pounds. they say most of the drones that have threatened air safety have been operated by people unaware of the rules. the registration program is a way to make sure there are no excuses. >> so the registration will create an opportunity to provide the basic education and will also create accountability so when a drone is located that has been flying improperly we'll be able to locate the owner. bigger steps taken in the coming months and years once they get their hands around the problem here. >> the key existing problem for drones include flying under 400 feet and kept inside of the operator at all times. never flown over groups of people, concerts, sporting or
