it feels like winter has arrived. you are waking up to some of the coalest temperatures this season but how long will it last? and super saturday, the final push before christmas. christmas -- >> a real life grinch snatches about $800 in high-tech christmas lights from a staten island home and it's not the first time they have been hit. cbs 2 news saturday morning starts right now. good morning.

i am andrea grymes. it's chilly this morning. temperatures in the 30s. it feels colder with wind chill into the 20s and teens for some. let's take a look at how chilly it feels right now. feels like 33 in the city. feels like 13 in monticello. the wind chill in the hamptons at 28. and in greenwich and white plains, -- white plains, the wind chill is 25 degrees. we do have a little bit of snow sullivan. and then you see thick cloud cover on the east end of long island. not everybody under clear skies right now. we expect today to be a mainly sunny sort of day, however, we will likely hold on to the clouds on the east end of long island as temperatures struggle to warm to 40 degrees. feel like 28.

at 3:00, the high of 40 feel like 35 degrees. winds today gusting up to 30 miles per hour. yes, feeling like december but the feeling does not last. we will talk about near record warmth in the full forecast. >> thank you. today thousands will brave the cold and hit the stores for super saturday. >> many retailers are ready for the rush of last-minute christmas shoppers. ilana gold is live in queens with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. packed today. many of the stores here are opening several hours early to deal with the holiday rush. and now super saturday is always a huge shopping day and this year the discounts could be even better. the christmas count down is on and people across the tri-state area will flood the stores on this super saturday. many still have gifts to buy. >> my granddaughter, she loves being a princess this is, i believe, belle.

more time to put an end to procrastination thanks to longer store hours. >> this is woody from toy story. anything else in there? girl. >> reporter: the national retail federation says the average holiday shopper has done about 50% of their shopping and 90% of holiday shoppers still have items to decorations. this super saturday, retailers are offering big discounts to get more people in the door and boost what has been a slow holiday shopping season and the unseasonably warm weather this past week hasn't helped either. and now that temperatures have dropped, last-minute shoppers will have the cold to deal with. like strange shopping in the cold because it's been so warm. >> it was. i've been freezing but forgot my jacket. >> i'm going to bake all day tomorrow. indoor, i'm done, thank you. >> i think it's totally awesome because it finally feels like christmas. >> reporter: so it's definitely

if you're heading out to go shop, you will definitely want to bundle up. again, many of the stores are opening between 7:00 and 8:00. ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. well christmas has not been cherry and bright for some families on staten island after police say thieves made off with their holiday lights. we spoke with a family who was home was hit. >> it was very enchanting. very pretty. >> reporter: she showed us these pictures of what her holiday light display used to look like before some grinches stole her laser lighting system this week. >> i'm angry, to be honest with you. i feel sad and then very angry. >> reporter: she says the thieves took off with nearly $800 in lasers. >> professional-type lights that i understand when i purchased them that they're used in disney land and disney world so they're high-tech lights.

>> reporter: the only laser left is mounted -- is mounted on the roof and her husband moved the rest inside because the same thing happened three years ago. >> we put out an effort and us. >> reporter: and it turns out three different families on the week. >> yeah, i call them a grinch. >> reporter: and she has one message for the christmas culprits who took her lights. >> i want them back. drop them in front of my house. you stole them. >> reporter: so if you have any of these laser light shining on your home or in your tree, you may want to keep a very close eye on them. cbs 2 news. the search is on for the armed robber a store owner fought off with his shoe. and now he is talking about the encounter that was caught on camera.

store with a shotgun demanding cash. the owner begins to put money into a plastic bag but the robber reaches in to grab more. him. the gunman runs out, fires a round into the pavement and speeds off. >> you can say god tell me or something, i don't know, something tell me, grab him. >> police say the suspect fled in a dark-colored sedan with yellow license plates. well hundreds of active and retired firefighters in new york and new jersey say they are losing their hearing and are now sighing. nearly 200 firefighters and hundreds more across the country have filed a lawsuit against a siren maker. the firefighters claim the

well, quiet in times square right now but it's not going to be like that in a couple weeks. welcome back to cbs 2 news saturday morning. campaign 2016 news, bernie sanders and the democratic party have reached a deal to regain access to voter files. hillary rodham clinton's team accused sanders' team of stealing data. they say they improperly searched and saved the data and they blocked his campaign from using it. yesterday they filed a lawsuit against the dnc for blocking access. they reached an agreement last night to have it restored. and it will likely be a hot topic tonight when they face off in the democratic presidential debate. they debate tonight at 8:00 in new hampshire. president barack obama was

he met with family members of victims. the president and the first lady spent time with each of the 14 families at a high after the closed-door meeting the president called the families representative of the strength and unity and love of their community and nation. the president stopped in cal enroute to hawaii for his vacation. the gender pay gap, there's apparently a gender pricing gap as well. the city's department of consumer affairs compared more than 800 products sold at two dozen new york city stores. they found that the products for women cost 7% more than similar products for men. the city sent out letters asking them to address the issue. star wars the force awakens is taking the nation by storm. this weekend, it will likely shatter box office records. walt disney is projecting the

[ no audio ] next week, near record warmth returns to the forecast. temperatures for most of us in the 30s but it's 25 in monticello. the 24-hour temperature change reaching 10 and nearly 20 degrees colder than yesterday at this time. it's going to feel like 20 to 35 degrees in and around the city. but well north and west, it will feel like 15 to 30 degrees with the winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour. on the radar, most of us under mainly cloudy skies. and a few rain showers as well. and then as we look to the northwest of the city, snow showers impacting sullivan this morning. and it's not going to be significant but none the less, it will make -- nonetheless, it

a cold front across the great lakes. high pressure will build in and setting stage for a beautiful sunday and less windy tomorrow as well. and the hour-by-hour break down. snow showers possible north and west of the city for today. and the rest of us, mostly sunny skies. however, the clouds on the east end of long island look to hang on longerring for. most of us will see mostly sunny skies. overnight, clear skies for us. and a lot of sunshine through the day tomorrow. but it will still be on the chilly side. the extended forecast. for today, 40 is going to feel like the 20s and low 30s out there. again, very windy today, gusting up to 30 miles per hour. tomorrow, it's 45 degrees for us, mostly sunny sky, lovely. on monday, 54 degrees, winter officially begins late on monday, partly cloud sunny skies and the warm-up continues from there. tuesday, wet weather in the forecast. wednesday, 63 degrees, a chance

there's a threat with those too right. if cats like to jump and dogs like to do the same. should you move your ornaments up? >> yes, you want to be cautious. you want to put the ornaments higher out of the the reach but cats can jump. so you have to be very crafty about it. you may not want to use glass or sharp-type the of ornaments. keep them high. make sure the tree is anchored. you don't want your tree to fall. and you don't want them to climb in the tree and then it's in the floor. just be cautious and keep them in the back of your mind. >> right. and also, decorations are one thing, food a whole other story. the holidays are all about -- >> a whole other story. a lot of food. >> i like to feed my dog table food. what should we absolutely avoid for both cats and dogs. >> for both, keep them away from the fatty. the no-no foods, the turkey, the left overs, safeguard your

this saturday, december the 19th. i'm cindy hsu in for diane macedo. >> i walked out this morning, the burst of cold air and wind hits you. it's a change. >> and woke you up too. >> right. >> winds gusting to 30 miles per hour today. couple that with the coldest air we have seen all season and it's going to feel like the 20s and low 30s today. so quite a change for us. let's take a look at where we stand at this moment in final. we are at 37 in the city. it is 36 in mount vernon, riverhead as well. 25 in liberty. those winds are already intense. it feels like 33 in the city. and feels like 13 degrees in liberty. sea girt, a feels-like temperature of 22. many of us under mainly clear skies right now but we have clouds to the north and to the east of the city. in fact, we've got showers across the east end of long island. and snow showers well north and

ledge, camped out in sleeping bags and even people bathing in the public bathrooms, cleaning themselves and their clothes, in full public view. this 68-year-old man has lived here for years and began talking to me, telling me why. >> much safer here than in the shelter. because with all this stuff here, i can get knifed. could have bed bugs on me, lice. >> reporter: people asleep in the food court, near baggage claim, waiting areas and tucked away near bathrooms and we noticed a smell where they gather. using the public restrooms to groom themselves, this man bathing in the sink. >> kind of forget on a day-to- day basis that people live like this every single day. >> reporter: late today, the port authority called cbs 2 news back to say they'll close the terminal from 4 4:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. to anyone who does not have a ticket. they tell us it will begin just after the new year. in the newsroom, meg baker, cbs

>> the port authority tells they have commissioned volunteers of an organization to approach the homeless every night to offer assistance but it is usually refused. continue. and the homeless problem isn't just at laguardia. it can be seen in many parts of the city. the mayor de blasio has opened up about a possible solution. in an exclusionive interview, the human resources commissioner says he will consider increasing the number of spaces at drop-in centers. >> we've got to look at the role and the place of drop-in centers to continue to play that almost weigh station to help someone come in from the streets and go on that pathway back into shelters. >> the centers provide food, showers and medical services. spaces were slashed by the previous administration. new this morning, police are on the hunt for three men

this video is of the suspect, they can be seen hiding their faces from the cameras. police say the men knocked on the 42-year-old woman's door. when she opened it, one of the men punched her in the face. the men allegedly grabbed a cellphone inside and took off. the actor was arrested during a protest at an orange county power plant. police used bolt cutters to remove a metal harness from her neck yesterday. it was part of a small group that locked themselves together protesting the construction of a power plant. he is expected to appear in court next month on disorderly conduct charges. a slithering passenger. the crew reported seeing a snake many the cargo hold. it turned out to be a venomous indian cobra. experts recovered the snake and say it was underweight and dehydrated but doing better now. the ship came from singapore.

i mean, many have been longing for this. this cold, brisk air, it's in place today and tomorrow the. after that, we're talking near record warmth next week. crazy stuff happening but still we have lots of good news from the weather department first let's check in with the weather watchers and see what's happening in their neck of the woods this morning. island. bruce adams say, hey, we have winds out of north at 14 miles per hour right now. some clouds as well. relative humidity at 71%. and we move up north here. and we have a 30-degree temperature. this from mark. mostly clear skies in pleasant valley this morning. looking well to the northwest of the city, hey, snow showers. and let's go ahead and take you live outside. this is the picture as we get closer to sunrise. we can see more. love that. brisk wind, 37. winds are out of the west at 15 miles per hour in central park. the wind chill is down into the low 30s in the park. finally feeling like december

we're talking wind chills in the 30s today. and then passing snow flakes well north and west of the city. and next week, a warming trend, highs will be reaching near record levels. here is that temperature trend. yesterday we topped out at 577. and that happened early in the day. and temperatures steadily dropped off. today a high of 40 will feel like the 30s. we should be at 40 degrees right now. note the normal high is 42. tomorrow, 45. comfortable out there with calmer winds than. then for monday, 54 and we continue to climb. clear skies over the city, more clouds to the east, a few rain showers as well, snow showers to the north and west. this is going to be the general trend for today, i think. we will continue to see the possibility of snow showers north and west and continue to see more clouds off the east end of long island and maybe showers. but otherwise, for most of us, a mainly sunny sort of day, cold and windy with the cold front sweeping through. and high pressure for tomorrow.

for today, looking good but awfully cold out there. 3:00 note what's happen, snow showers possible north and west of the city. by 10:00, clouds but generally clear. overnight, skies are clear and cold again but with the wind settling, the wind chills won't be as significant. for today, flakes north and west, winds west at 15 to 20 miles per hour with gusts as high as 30 miles per hour today. and overnight, clearing sky, falling to 32 and then tomorrow, high of 45 under mainly sunny skies. and monday, 54, winter officially begins late in the day, partly sunny skies to start off the week. tuesday, 59, a chance for showers. wednesday and thursday, we are in the mid-60s. it seems absurd, it's near record warmth for us in the midweek forecast. rain as well, travel plan, looks like the eastern corridor soggy.
