december it 26. i'm alex dennis in for andrea grymes. >> first meteorologist vanessa murdock was here with the forecast. it was christmas and i was in a t-shirt. how long is it going to last. >> today is going to be 15 degrees cooler but tomorrow record warmth again so it's not over by any stretch. it will still be 12 degrees above normal. very mild yet again. won't be a sunny day. degrees. central park at 54. 52 in edison and greenwich. so very mild. temperatures will not move. most of us in the low 50s. plenty of cloud cover, a few showers making their way closer towards us.

the river and the center is guarding the building this morning. the man likely shot his family while they were sleeping. >> a welfare check led to a crime scene when police made a gruesome discovery in a 7th 17th floor apartment. >> it's very sad. >> they found the bodies of 53- year-old michael, his wife melissa and their 8-year-old daughter melee in a bedroom. he shot the two before turning the gun on hemself. >> we believe the shootings took place while they were laying in the bed or while they were sleeping. >> investigators tell us the shootings happened at least a day and a half ago but none of the neighbors reported hearing any gunshots. it wasn't until late afternoon when the relatives called police.

one family assumed it was set off by the wind only to find out there was a man hiding in their home. it began wednesday evening. her and her family received a call for a burglar alarm but assumed it was false. she noticed something strange at her bedroom door and found a man hiding behind it. >> he was wearing a hood and he pushed me out of the way and my mom grabbed him. that was her first reaction. my brother was screaming. >> thankfully no one was injured. the man escaped with a jewelry box and is described as a male with black skin wearing a hoodie and jeans. a top rebel commander has been killed in an air strike, a

he had one of the most powerful groups by saudi arabia. at least 14 people confirmed dead after a tornado tore across the town of holly springs. the powerful storm system tore through states including mississippi, tennessee, arkansas and alabama. at least 14 tornadoes hit mississippi alone. thousands remain without power. a fire at bill clinton's childhood home was apparently caused by arson. it was reported at the hope arkansas home friday morning. smells indicate an accelerant may have been used. the home sustained minor damage. today a firefighter gave his mask to a teenage girl. a fire lieutenant in yers raced

yesterday was a working holiday for fedex employees who had to play catch up on christmas. the carrier was trying to make good on deliveries that were delayed because of severe storms that interrupted schedules. fedex did not plan on delivering on christmas but workers put in the over time. kwanza begins today with the principal of unity. each light there's a candlelighting ceremony to discuss the meaning as well. unwrapped too many socks or fruit cakes this year, tis the season of returning and exchanging. what you need to know. and a new york city mother got to open a door to a new apartment. the organization that helped make it possible. another mild day ahead but still a lot cooler than it was yesterday.

very wonderful, thank you. the forecast i think will be trending towards a cooler temperature that people will appreciate but we are not quite there yet. we are not to seasonable just yet. talking about 50 today, we should be at 40 but we do have highs in the forecast. so big changes on the way. live outside this morning it is a very pretty picture. cloudy skies and 54 degrees. incredible warmth as we start our saturday morning. hour. as we look at the headlines for today it's going to be unsettled. the stretch continues. a chance for rain tomorrow as well. monday a little bit of a break. tuesday more wet weather in the mix and that could be of the wintery variety. yes a little cooler in the low 50s for afternoon temperatures. and then tomorrow spring like warmth back again. record setting possibilities for your sunday.

highs in the low and mid 40s on monday. here's how it looks. yesterday christmas day and christmas eve for that fact both record setting day. today we'll top out at 52 degrees closer to seasonable but still well above the normal. 65 tomorrow, record setting, monday 44 so cooler air does dive in. as we look at the vortex plenty of clouds out there. a little bit of green on the screen as far as showers. definitely possible for today. it will be a mostly cloudy sort of day. an area of high pressure to the north. what's happening here is because winds are out of the northeast. we are funneling in the slightly cooler air for today. again still well above normal. for today cooler clouds and a chance for showers about a 20 to 30% chance of wet weather. then tomorrow as the low lifts to the north we are going to

the homeless in a new way. kenneth craig has more. >> the new apartment is a work in progress. no furniture yet but she has a christmas tree and a permanent place she and her three kids call home. >> what's this feel like for you? >> well the last year has been pretty amazing. pretty amazing. >> the family spent two years living in a new york city homeless shelter after a domestic abuse situation. >> it wasn't easy but we stuck together. >> there are more than one million children who are without homes nationwide. >> all kinds of families experience homelessness. >> ellen baxter is the founder of broadway housing communities an organization that created affordable housing in new york for more than 40 years. it's building called sugar hill opened with 121 units a year ago. more than 48,000 applied for a spot.

a new jersey church congregation says they witnessed a miracle on christmas after a man stopped breathing and was recess tated. one of the ministers collapsed. a parishonner took over. >> started doing chest compressions on the gentleman. we did shock him three times and he started breathing after the third time. >> the man is expected to be released from the medical center today. a hero firefighter removed his own mask inside a burning home so he could give it to a teenage girl. this is the guy you want responding to your emergency. yesterday he raced into a burning apartment where the teen was trapped in a bedroom and placed his mask on the girl and hurried her out of the building. >> she was definitely having

coming up. a semi truck took out an entire bridge in indiana. the bridge collapsed when the truck which was nearly 6 times over the weight limit drove across it yesterday. luckily no one was hurt.

little bit sick. or will they? >> this crazy warm weather has had people unpacking shorts and t-shirts. maybe not enough to call it a cold snoop but it's hard to know how to dress. it's the kind of weather that could give you a cold right? the short answer is no. >> the common cold is more common in the winter. it is a myth to believe that the weather change will cause any viral or bacterial infections. >> it can be a shock to your system and have other effects on your body. >> with the weather you might get swelling and passages that can mimic those feelings of being sick. those are often times related to allergies. >> try nasal spray before running to the doctor. it will help flush ultimate allergens and getting enough sleep is critical to keep your

let's start with our weather watchers. temperatures for so many of us right now still in the 50s as we start off this saturday morning. so here we go. notice all of the low 50s out there to 54 degrees as we start off your day. leo is in brick new jersey. winds out of the north at 6 miles per hour. the northerly winds are going to be the reason why temperatures today will be cooler than yesterday. pumping that air in from a different direction. a little cooler today but we had the air conditioning on all day yesterday. was that you as well? tomorrow you may have to do the same because we are talking record warmth yet again but today we are going to stay the of us. live outside right now beautiful shot of the empire state building. cloudy skies over head 54 degrees and the winds northeast at 14 miles per hour. what can you expect from the forecast cooler today and a few showers, plenty of clouds. tomorrow back into the 60s. more records likely going to be broken. then for monday seasonably
