this morning. >> it is very damp. we'll start to dry out a little and temperatures are going to sky rocket to record levels. dense fog this morning, record warmth this afternoon. a lot happening in this forecast. first the dense fog advisory in effect until 10:00 a.m. this morning. half mile visibilities for westville, the worst of it down to a third of a mile visibility. very foggy and damp. it's 48 in the city, 44 in hamburg but much warmer east and south of the city. here's a look at the vortex satellite and radar picture. plenty of clouds and fog this morning. showers mainly together north at this point in time but this afternoon through this evening showers are back in the mix. 9:00 a.m., 53 degrees plenty of fog maybe a stray shower. noon 62 degrees.

and at 3, 65 with some sun and then expect showers overnight and maybe a rumble of thunder. coming up we'll talk about a wintery storm headed our way to start the work week. >> thanks vanessa. now to our top story. police in new jersey are searching for a gunman who shot a toddler in the face. >> the one and a half-year-old was rushed to jersey city medical center. the bullet struck him while he sat a few feet away from his father. ilana gold is live with more on his condition. >> we talked to the toddler's uncle and he says the child is going to be recovering here for the next few days. when he was shot a bullet got lodged in his cheek. the victim's family wants to know who did this and why. >> this is a photo of the child at jersey city medical center with a swollen lip and cheek. he released the image and

>> somebody come with the gun and then they leave. running. >> he had been sitting in this car at the corner of bergen and harrison avenues. a bullet struck the back wind shield and one of them hit the toddler. >> 12 times in a few seconds. >> the five-year-old sister was in the back seat next to him when this happened. their father michael also in the car behind the wheel. they were sitting in the vehicle waiting to pick up the children's mother at the post office. she walked out to find her son shot and crying uncontrollably before rushing him to the hospital. >> bleeding everywhere on his face. >> people couldn't ignore the sound of gunshots. >> i saw it and i ran inside and locked the door. >> the shooter took off and

>> he was walking normally and then started running so he saw him from this way. >> they don't believe the family was the intended target and need police to track down whoever did this. >> i don't understand why you take the gun and then you go. >> so right now police are trying to figure out who the gunman is and the motive behind the shooting. if you have information they are urging you to come forward. live in jersey city, ilana gold cbs 2 news. >> new this morning at least 8 people are dead after tornadoes and other storms ripped through parts of north texas. >> it's massive. >> oh my gosh it's big. >> that was a tornado caught on camera in a dallas suburb, the hardest hit area. dozens of homes and businesses were leveled. this church was completely torn apart. five people were also killed when another one blew cars right off the road. 11 tornadoes touched down late

new this morning the pentagon says the u.s. came down hard on isis this christmas. 17 air born strikes hit islamic state group targets in iraq and syria. the strikes part of operation inherent resolve carried out by a combination of fighter jets bombers and drones. the pentagon says all u.s. aircraft returned safely. the bureau of alcohol tobacco and firearms joined the investigation into a fire in a houston texas mosque. friday's fire was suspicious because there were multiple points of origin meaning an accelerant may have been used. members hope surveillance video will help track down a suspect. police in new jersey have identified a man killed in a christmas day hit-and-run. 59-year-old steven was hit by a car at cedar lane and garrison avenue friday night and was taken to the university hospital where he died from his injuries.

scene and so far no arrests. investigators in new jersey are trying to determine a motive in a murder suicide that left three people including an eight-year-old girl dead in edgewater. 53-year-old michael shot and killed his 49-year-old wife and their daughter before pulling the trigger on himself. investigators believe the murder suicide took place two or three days before christmas. the mother and daughter had been in their pajamas. >> we believe the shootings took place while they were laying in bed. >> edgewater police came to the scene on christmas after getting a call from a man in missouri who said his sister and her family did not show up for the holidays. >> hate crime detectives have launched an investigation after someone put flyers promoting the kkk on cars at brookhaven memorial hospital and a nearby apartment complex on christmas.

investigation in september of last year after ku klux klan flyers were found in west babylon and shirley. christmas is over and the headache of shopping should be too but that was not the case in new jersey one day after the holiday. this was the frustrating scene. a long line of cars waiting to get in and out as shoppers returning gifts or taking advantage of discounts and sales. shoppers waited up to four hours just to find a place to park and even longer just to exit the parking garage. happening today preparations are set to begin on the new years eve ball in times square. workers are adding 288 new water ford crystals to the ball square. it will be covered with 2400 crystals and celebrate the wonder design. the african american

back here at home a scare at the mall on long island shows panicked shoppers running for the exited after a fight broke out in the food court. no one was hurt or arrested but earlier this week there was a shooting at that mall. everyone knows candles can be a fire hazard but some are not known of the health concerns. >> she didn't think she was doing anything wrong last thursday when she lit two large scented candles. >> i didn't think anything of it. i had them burning six or seven hours. >> but the next morning she noticed black specks in her nose. >> and i noticed inside of the baby's noses right lane it was all black. >> this is what the baby's nose

suctioned it and rinsed with saline. >> the candle said don't burn more than three hours. >> it's a pretty common mistake. >> have you heard of this issue with candles producing soot? >> yes definitely. patients come in all of the the time not necessarily putting things together. i go through a check list is there anything about the environment you are doing differently and this time of year yes we are burning candles. >> there are ways to reduce it. keep the wick trimmed to an eighth of an inch above the wax and never burn in a drafty air. if you do see soot put the candle out immediately. the national candle association also says that candles containing too much fragrance or fragrances not approved for candles can burn unsafely so make sure you are buying from a

major problems for places like texas, oklahoma, new mexico. blizzard conditions and tornadoes will transition into a wintery mess late monday night and tuesday starting as snow changing to a mix rapidly so midnight a wintery mix. by 6:00 a.m. it's a messy tuesday morning commute. something to keep in mind. snow fall totals in the city a tenth of an inch. north of the city maybe an inch to two inches. so everywhere but way up here it will get washed away because it will all transition to rain by the time it's said and done late tuesday. as for today not that soggy. 64 degrees. we see clouds and sun by this afternoon and showers late this afternoon. when the jets take on the patriots i think it's a good day for football. your extended forecast 65 degrees mainly cloudy until this afternoon with sun.

here's steve overmyer with the sports update. >> there's a long history of politics in sports so it should come as no surprise at all a basketball player is hitting the campaign trail so to speak. carmello anthony is not in the starting line up but he's in the twitter campaign to increase his votes hoping his fans will come through. he's averaging 21 points a game this year the lowest total he's had in 11 seasons. his ankle is fine after sitting out wednesday against the cavs. he finished with a team high 18. knicks actually shot 66% in the opening half but they only had a three point lead to show for it and the law of averages suggested atlanta was eventually going to catch up and they did. the hawks win by 19. the knicks are 4-17 on the season. as for the nets they have the second worst record in the nba

they didn't make any arrests but the mall was briefly put on lock down. many shoppers went running fearing for their safety. >> i think it's pretty scary in this day and age you never know what's going to happen and you always got to keep your eyes open and your guard up. >> keep in mind there was a shooting at the mall on tuesday. a security guard was injured during an attempted robbery. the suspect was later arrested. sprint and verizon customers have to act fast if they want to claim refunds for unauthorized text messages. current subscribers who paid for text messages have until december 31. they were charged for sports scores that were buried in bills known as cramming. both wireless carriers have agreed to pay $158 million to settle claims.

we move up here to 44 degrees. this from thompkins cove also reporting fog closer to a quarter of an inch north of the city. it is damp. we will see sunshine today and will feel the warmth later on. live outside our cbs broadcast center we can see the roadway here. 50 degrees, southeast winds at 3 miles per hour. on the vortex plenty of clouds over head. of course the fog at the surface but note on this picture very challenging and a few specks to the north. much of today we won't see a lot in the way of rain but this afternoon late and after sunset here's what's happening. very mild winds out of the south west. later today this cold front will make it's way on through. as that happens we see a little bit of rain. yes after the sunset hours most

starts to build in temporarily this storm system causing major problems through texas, oklahoma, missouri through the great lakes region this is a big mess. it's going to be making it's way in the northeasterly direction. this is our storm that brings wintery weather. here's the path of that track that makes it's way towards us. the high pressure system providing the cold. this storm will start off as an icy mix for most of us and will change to rain as we make our way into the day on tuesday. i think the wet weather starts around midnight monday night and around 6:00 a.m. it will really start transitioning to rain. so again your tuesday morning commute could be quite messy. here's why we see things shaping out in the green starts as a mix but becomes all rain as around 6:00 a.m. on tuesday morning. starting as snow just due north and west the city will transition into a wintery mix in the early morning hours and becoming rain probably closer

and well north of the city we talk about it starting as snow and it will change to a bit of an icy mix but we think well north of the city places like sullivan and duchess county we'll see a little bit of precipitation left on the ground one to two inches of snow and icy mix. well to the north of the city whatever falls gets washed away by the rain. 65 degrees. clouds and fog to start. breaks of sun this afternoon. and early this evening rain moves back in most likely hours between 5 and 8. tonight 42 degrees giving way to late day clouds. overnight monday the wintery mix begins ending as rain on tuesday windy and warmer at 50, 52 for wednesday still rainy. 53 on thursday rain early for new years eve and friday looks to be dry in the 40s. >> thank you.

if you had said when gino smith went down the jets 9-5 with a chance to make the play offs no way you are crazy but they are sitting on a spot basically if they win this game they are still alive and could be in the play offs. >> and the last time they played it was a close game. and derrell revis was saying they learned from it and it's a rematch. >> they could play with the big boys and the patriots are banged up and the jets are riding high so these two teams are coming in here in different situations and i really like the jets chances with the momentum they are riding on. this game. >> do you think they are going to get into the play offs? >> they need help and they don't control their own destiny. they still need help. here's the play off situation. right now they are the same record as the steelers and the chiefs. they need one of those two teams to lose a game and the jets have to win in order for

>> so it's patriots today and the bills next week which should be fun. let's switch gears and talk about the giants. >> do we have to? >> unfortunately fans are waking up really disappointed total layout of play off contention. they take on the vikings tonight. it hasn't been a good season for the giants. >> it has been a match. it officially eliminated the giants from the play offs. tom coughlin hasn't had the best season. it's now the fourth year in a row they have not made the play offs. a lot of people are saying he might not have his job next season so he needs a strong performance tonight. odel beckham jr. is not going to play this game. he would have been the scapegoat if the giants needed this win a lot of blame could have been put on his shoulders so he's breathing a sigh of relief. he has been suspended this game
