i'm diane macedo. >> and i'm andrea grymes. vanessa murdock has a look at the forecast and looks like we are going to break records. >> record warmth yes and a lot of fog if you are heading out early. visibilities are greatly reduced. a dense fog advisory in effect for two more hours. after that skies start to clear a bit. breaks of sun this afternoon and we expect record warmth. in the meantime visibility down to two miles in the city down to a third of a mile in many places including west bury and walden. visibility down to one mile. temperatures are warming up starting at 47. it's 48 in, 46 in chatham. on the vortex satellite and radar picture clouds are pretty thick over the city. as we make our way to the north there is rain. however for today much of the day will be dry. it's not until we hit really darkness sunset the rain comes

chance for wet weather mainly from 5 to 8 tonight. a stray shower in between now and then cannot be ruled out and all the while warming to 65 degrees this afternoon that would set a new record in central park. i'll have your full forecast coming up. a big swing and wintery weather on the way. diane and andrea back to you. vanessa thank you. top story a toddler was shot in the face and police in new jersey are searching for the man responsible. >> the bullet struck him while he sat a few feet away from his father. ilana gold has more on his condition. >> we talked to the child's uncle here at the hospital and the toddler is going to be recovering here for the next few days. a bullet got lodged in his cheek. the victim's family wants to know who did this and why? >> this is a photo of the one

city medical center with a swollen lip and cheek. his uncle took if right before the surgery to remove the bullet from his face. he released the image and talked about the scare. then leave running. >> he had been sitting in this car at the corner of bergen and harrison avenues when a gunman afternoon. a bullet shattered the back wind shield and one of them struck the toddler. >> imagine 12 bullets in a few seconds. >> his five-year-old sister was in the back seat next to him when this happened. their father michael also in the car behind the wheel. they were sitting in the vehicle waiting to pick up the child's mother. she walked out to find her son shot and crying before getting rushed to the hospital. >> bleeding everywhere in his face. >> people couldn't ignore the sound of gunshots.

again and locked the door. >> the shooter took off in a matter of seconds. witnesses say they saw him leaving the scene. >> he was walking normally and then he started running. he saw him from this way. >> the victim's relatives don't believe the family was the intended target and need police to track down whoever did this. >> i don't understand people. why you take a gun and then go. >> right now police are trying to figure out who the gunman is and the motive behind the shooting. if you have any information they are urging you to come forward. cbs 2 news. >> new this morning at least 8 people are dead after tornadoes and other storms ripped through parts of north texas. >> it's massive. oh my gosh it's big. >> that was a tornado caught on camera in a dallas suburb. the hardest hit area. dozens of homes and businesses

apart and five people were killed when a tornado blew cars right off the road. the national weather service says a preliminary count shows 11 tornadoes touched down last night. back here at home police have identified the man killed in a christmas day hit-and-run. police say 59-year-old steven was hit by a car at cedar lane and garrison avenue friday night and was taken to hackensack university hospital where he died from his injuries. scene. no arrests have been made. investigators in new jersey are still trying to determine a motive in the murder suicide that left three people dead including an 8-year-old girl. police say 53-year-old michael shot and killed his 49-year-old wife and their young daughter in their edgewater home before pulling the trigger on himself. investigators believe the murder suicide took place two or three days before christmas. the mother and daughter were in their pajamas. >> we believe the shootings

laying in their beds. >> edgewater police came to the scene on christmas after getting a call from a man in missouri who said his sister and her family didn't show up for the holidays. hate crimes in suffix county have launched an investigation after flyers promoting the kkk were placed on vehicles at brookhaven memorial hospital and a nearby memorial complex on christmas. a similar investigation was launched in september of last year after they were found in west babylon and shirley. >> shoppers got a scare on long island yesterday. video posted on social media shows people running for the exits near the food court. no one was hurt and police didn't make any arrests but the mall was briefly on lock down and many shoppers went running fearing for their safety. >> i think it's pretty scary. in this day and age you never know what's going to happen and always got to keep your eyes open and your guard up.

mall on tuesday. a security guard was injured during an attempted robbery and the suspect was later arrested. christmas is over and the head ache of shopping should be too but that was not the case in new jersey one day after the holiday. this was the frustrating scene outside garden state plaza. a long line of cars waiting to get in and out as shoppers flocked to the busy mall to return gifts or take advantage of discounts and sales. shoppers waited four hours just to find a place to park and longer just to exit the parking garage. preparations are set to begin on the new years eve ball in times square. workers are adding 288 new water ford crystals to the ball in times square. the ball will be covered with 2400 crystals celebrating the gift of wonder design. >> the african american holiday of kwanza is now under way.

a college student home for the holidays and a mother of five are dead after a police involved shooting in chicago. police say officers responded to a 911 call about a domestic dispute. the 19-year-old opened the door holding a bat and became violent according to police when an officer opened fire shooting and killing him but a 55-year-old woman inside the home also was hit and killed. chicago's mayor issued a statement reading any time an officer uses force the public deserves answers. the u.s. came down hard on

>> let's head over to vanessa murdock. it is so foggy this morning. >> it is but it will start to lift a bit after the 10:00 a.m. hour and warming up big time. 65 degrees the forecast for this afternoon. we'll get rid of a little bit of this and see a little bit of sun then rain returns into the afternoon and evening. clouds and fog, 50 in central park, south west winds at 5 miles per hour. your headlines are this. very murky skies, early yes but record warmth today to end your weekend. then tomorrow a seasonable chill for monday. highs in the low to mid 40s tomorrow. overnight monday into tuesday a wintery mix will transition to rain on tuesday. so it's going to be a wintery mess for that tuesday morning commute for many. as far as today, 65 degrees the forecasted high. the record now stands at 63 degrees set back in 1949 so if we hit 65 today we will be setting a new record. here is the set-up.

eastern corridor. incredible cold as we look towards the west. right along here is a frontal boundary and a pretty big storm system bringing us that wintery storm into monday night and tuesday but for today something a little bit closer to home drumming up the wet weather. this cold front here will ease on by late this afternoon with a better chance for wet weather today. hour by pour for the morning plenty of fog giving way to some breaks of sun in the afternoon. around 5:00 we start to see more rain moving in and through 8:00 the most likely hour. overnight skies clear. starting on a dry note. skies quickly fill back in with cloud cover as the storm system 10:00 p.m. monday night a little bit of wet weather starts to making it's way in. a little bit of a wintery mix the south west of the city. a wintery mix for many of us. a little bit of snow well to the north much the city. by 6:00 a.m. the wintery mix has

south and east to rain. well to the north and west it is going to maintain that morning. by 2 in the afternoon as the system makes it's exit it is transitioning to all rain. if you had any wintery weather that landed on the ground it will get washed away with an exception well to the north of the city we might get a little bit of snow and ice mix. tomorrow today none of that. a whole a lot of warmth. 64 degrees as the jets take on the patriots at 1. winds out of the west south west at 10. for the start of the day the forecast is dry some breaks of sun and showers may be moving back in. today 65 degrees in the city. would be a new record again late showers. fog will be lifting on out. overnight 42 degrees. showers early. becoming mostly cloudy so to start your monday off some sun but then the clouds thicken.

tomorrow and that wintery mix arrives overnight. close to the midnight hour expect wet weather monday night into tuesday. by tuesday morning at 6:00 a.m. in the city pointed south and east it has already transitioned to rain but the tuesday morning commute will be messy for many of us. your day on tuesday windy and wet with a high of 50. there. 52 with late showers sticking around into christmas day. 53 degrees for tuesday with showers but by midnight the forecast dry and temperatures likely in the upper 40s at the stroke of midnight so that's a pretty good new years eve forecast especially if the rain moves out. >> hopefully it does. >> no more of that wintery mix for new years eve. >> a little snow wouldn't be bad. >> this doesn't sound like the pretty fluffy snow. >> this is going to be a big mess. most of us will get rain from the system. >> drive carefully everybody. vanessa thank you.

some bath news for giants- -bad news for giants fans. the redskins beat the eagles 38- 24. >> that means the giants have failed to make it into the play offs. now steve overmyer has the rest of your sports update. >> there's a long history of politics in sports so it should come as no surprise at all that a basketball player is hitting the campaign trail. carmello anthony is not in the starting line up but he is starting a twitter campaign to increase his votes. hopefully my fans will come through. he's averaging the lowest total he's had in 11 seasons. his ankle is looking fine after wednesday's game against the cavs. he knocked down the first four shots he saw in the game. knicks actually shot 66% in the opening half but they only had a three point lead in show for it and the law of averages

going to catch up and they did. the hawks win six straight by 19. the knicks are 4-17 on the season. the nets have the second worst record in the nba at 8-22. they were trying to climb the wall against the wizards but john wall poured in 22 points and 13 assists against the nets. brooklyn kept it close and took the lead in the third but turn overs ended up being the real issue for the nets, 19 to be exact. it's an 18 point game in the fourth but the nets lose by 15. 111-96 at the barclays center. have a great day. now it's time for our furry friend finder. our favorite segment of the week. niko is a nine month old terrier.

haven't made arrests. christmas is over and the headache of holiday shopping should be too but that was not the case in new jersey. this was the frustrating scene outside garden state plaza. a long line of cars waiting to get out returning gifts or taking advantage of discounts and sales. shoppers say they waited hours just to find a place to park. >> just kept going around until we got--until we eventually found something. >> we thought it would be packed because it was the day after christmas but it was really much more crowded than we ever could believe. >> shoppers say it took several hours just to exit the parking garage. sprint and verizon customers have to act fast if they want to claim refunds for unauthorized texts. current and former subscribers beginning july 1 of 2010 have until thursday december 31 to file a claim.

between 5 and 8 we have our best bet for wet weather today. tomorrow a seasonable chill in the air. we should be at 40 degrees, tomorrow at 44. an icy mix moves in late monday night through the day on tuesday. what starts as a wintery mix will transition to mainly rain on tuesday. on the vortex satellite and radar picture right now thick cloud cover and fog. wet weather to the north all of low pressure. tonight what happens is. a chance for showers this evening and temporaryily high pressure forces it's way in with cold air tomorrow. warming into the mid 60s today. rain through the evening hours. tomorrow it's a reality check. start out with sunshine and clouds thickening through the day. temperatures only in the 40s. clouds thicken in advance of a wintery miss late monday night

here's the deal. an early wintery mix will transition to rain for us a storm system in texas makes it's way up towards us. as far as total snow fall goes we are looking from a tenth of an inch of snow up to an inch and a half well to the north of the city. however because most of us transition to rain the only place we may see a little bit left on the ground will be well north of the city in sullivan and duchess counties. for most of us the rain will wash anything that falls early away. for today rain later on in the meantime setting record 65 degrees and fog giving way to sunshine this afternoon. tonight's lows 42 in the city, 28 in liberty and then we see the colder air in place for tomorrow. we start off with sun. the clouds thicken. a high of 44. winds out of the northeast tomorrow at 10 to 15 miles per hour then overnight monday into tuesday wet and windy again it

also brighten up a little bit more basil and thyme to bring the herbs back to life. >> you put in your marinade a lot of the hebonas it. >> it's anaerobe encrusted salmon so there's a lot of herbs. it's delicious. and i also cook it with the skin on. you can't tell from here but the skin is on because it locks it in and keeps the natural flavor of the salmon and me personally i eat the skin. >> i was going to ask. >> skin on skin off. that's what i'm talking about. >> i like these rules. how much do you put in whatever you want. >> i'm not going back to school. and the salad bowl. >> you keep eating and i'll put the salad on. >> did you tell everybody about your tip with the champagne and

>> i used champagne vinegar. what's really fun, you take the champagne once it goes flat you put it in a wide lipped mason jar and leave it open and put a coffee filter on top. then a dark cool place for two to three months. >> months? okay. >> by the time it comes around for easter. >> for next new years you have lovely champagne vinegar. >> so put it somewhere and forget about it. a couple months later the left over vinegar. >> that's great. looks delicious. and this is so easy. >> brush it on and base it and a really cool trick. people think these are hard to play with but they are not that hard. you cut the ends and you don't want to cut in too deep. you want to do that for a second and then cut the top a
