one by accident. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. wild weather is whipping across the united states, packing deadly tornadoes, flooding, and blizzard conditions. right now, the severe weather stretches from new mexico to kentucky. it is expected to deliver more dangerous weather today. the death toll from the weekend storms has reached at least 43 people across seven states. texas has seen some of the worst devastation. as many as 1,450 homes around dallas were either damaged or destroyed. the area also saw at least nine tornadoes with winds topping 200 miles an hour. the storms leveled homes and swept cars off highways.

damage from hard-hit rowlett texas. >> reporter: those who survived will never forget. >> we ran inside the bathroom and hunkered down. next thing you hear is scratching and glass. >> reporter: the occasionally lightning strike illuminated the twisters that started touching 6:30 saturday night. at least 11 people died including several in their cars when a tornado crossed interstate 30. officials say the path of destruction stretches for 40 miles and more than 600 structures are damaged or destroyed. weather forecasters say two tornadoes clocked speeds of up to 200 miles per hour, tossing mobile homes like toys and flattening entire streets. the governor of texas says the situation is still volatile across the northern part of the state that is simultaneously experiencing extreme ice and snow conditions and torrential rain. >> we need you to remain vigilant.

community of rowlett have been reduced to piles of grizz. officials sent our warnings to people to take cover. >> if we have pure fatalityies or victims. >> reporter: authorities warn the number of victims may still rise. the same storm system has sparked blizzards in three southern states. texas, oklahoma, and new mexico conditions. some areas will see more than a foot of snow by the time the storm passes. the snowfall made driving impossible on a number of highways. layers of snow and ice covered roads in lubbock, texas. wind gusts reached up to 70 miles an hour and created power outages across the region. water from the storms has made many roads impassible.

overnight in missouri after cars drove into flooded streets. four of them were international soldiers based at ft. leonardwood. in alabama, searchers found the body of a 22-year-old man who is whose car was swept away over the weekend. >> the water is flowing swiftly and you don't know where to look. it is -- and i'm talking about extra swift. >> flooding is expected to get worse in oklahoma. rising waters there forced many people from their homes and caused a number of accidents. firefighters along the southern california coast are making major progress against a dangerous wildfire. it broke out christmas night north of ventura. flames exploded quickly and threatened hundreds of homes and some highways. the fire is 75% contained. officials hope to have it fully contained by tomorrow. a violent weekend for police in chicago. officers shot and killed two people, one of them accidentally.

the deaths come amid rising tensions between police and members of the city's black community. brian webb reports that people are demanding answers and change in the aftermath of the shootings. >> reporter: chicago police admit an officer made a mistake killing 55-year-old bettie jones saturday morning at this chicago apartment building. >> i came out my room and i looked and i seen my mom on the floor and i started crying. like he tried to shoot at me too. >> reporter: police were responding to reports that 189-year-old college student quintonio le impnchtsrier was acting agitated and armed with a baseball bat. officers shot him several times. he died at the hospital. >> he wouldn't hurt somebody who wants to go somewhere. and the people supposed to protect us took his life. >> reporter: both shooting victims are black. race of the officer or officers involved.

combative individual resulting in an officer firing shots and fatally wounding two individuals. >> reporter: grieving family and friend attended a news conference wearing these t-shirts referring to chicago mayor rahm emanuel. >> somebody has to do something about this! >> reporter: a memorial was held to remember the victims while the incident is under investigation. brian webb for cbs news. overseas now. government forces in iraq are closing in this morning on a key city in the fight against isis. iraqi soldiers are making their final push to take back ramadi, the city, 60 miles west of baghdad, is reportedly close to collapsing. debora patta is tracking the offensive in london. >> reporter: gun battles raged on the streets of ramadi as

after isis control. an iraqi ministry source says pockets of resistance remain. the united states defense department could not confirm those reports. troops inched forward street-by-street securing a path to its intended target. a government compound held by isis fighters. iraq's terrorism soldiers moved cautiously and clearing out buildings once controlled by isis fighters and fearing some of the structures had been rigged with explosives. the offensive, which began five days ago, has been slow and tough going. iraqi forces were hampered by sniper fire and were forced to navigate roads littered with ieds. the iraqi military suffered a humiliateing defeat when isis took control of it in may of this year. but it will serve as a stepping

stone for them to take back mosul the largest city in iraq controlled by isis. devastating floods in the united kingdom this morning threaten thousands of people. rescue crews are using rafts to save people from homes and cars after unprecedented flooding. weeks of rainfall in northern england have caused rivers to swell. hundreds of buildings are damaged or destroyed. no one, though, has been seriously hurt. coming up on the "morning news." a riot at a mall. hundreds of young people are blamed for causing disturbances

this is the "cbs morning news." powerball lottery fever heats up and panic at the mall. on the morning newsstand. the louisville courier journal says as many as 200,000 peoples, mostly teenagers, caused disturbance at a mall in a louisville suburb. police were called to the shopping center on saturday night after reports of fights.

no arrests were made. the mall reopened on sunday. and police are trying to determine whether the mayhem was planned. the san diego union tribune says a man plunged to his death from a cliff in san diego while he was using a camera or cell phone. the accident happened on christmas day. the man was identified as joshua burwell, of indiana. witnesses say they saw him looking at an electronic device before he fell 40 feet to the rocks below. newsday the long island, new york, newspaper says lotto fever is running high ahead of wednesday's 300 million dollar powerball drawing. several stores expect a rush of ticket buyers today. the multimillion dollar prize is the biggest since september. on the cbs "moneywatch" now the biggest after-christmas markdowns and saving money when you book your flight. >> u.s. financial markets resume

trading after a shortened week for the holiday. the dow lost 50 points on thursday and s&p down three and nasdaq gained two. two new services are available to help passengers their airline travel plans change. options away will lock in the rate and flyers will work with the client to find similar itineraries. both companies charge a small fee. this is the week that savvy shoppers will find bargains. the biggest markdowns are for clothing, especially winter gear, up to 60% off! post-christmas sales are among the biggest for the nation's retailers. if you're on vacation and you still find yourself working, you are not alone. a study by "usa today" suggests many business travelers are too overworked to unplug. the u.s. travel association found that 67% of workers are discouraged, giving mixed messages or neither encouraged or discouraged from taking time off.

in sports, denver broncos quarterback peyton manning is vehemently denying a record by al jazeera network that identified him as one of several high profile athletes who were drugs. jericka duncan reports. >> it's completely fabricated. complete trash, garbage. there is more adjectives i'd really makes me sick. >> reporter: peyton manning won times. he comes from a family of nfl quarterbacks. the 39-year-old has built his

career on hard work. >> during my 18 years of playing in the nfl, there are no shortcuts. >> reporter: but in a now documentary on sports doping by the al gentlemanjazeera networks they claim the manningings were receiving banned growth hormones in 2011. >> all of the time sending ashley manning drugs, like a growth hormone all the time, everywhere. it would never be under peyton's man, always under her name. >> reporter: they say the manning's received the drug from an institute in indiana where he says he worked. in a statement to cbs news, dr. dale guyer called the allegations simply not true and said mr. slide was not an employee of the guyer institute and his brief stay there included in 2015 during which peyton was not even being treated.

other athletes including ryan zimmerman and ryan howard. their attorney says they plan to take legal actions against al jazeera. surprisingly at the end of the documentary, al jazeera said sly backed off his claims. >> charlie sly said his accusations was false and incorrect. >> reporter: the documentary offers no further explanation. manning questioned why the network decided to release the story knowing one of their main sources changed his. >> i've done it the long way. i've done it the hard way and to insinuate anything otherwise is a complete and total joke and it's defamation ten a really ticks me off. >> reporter: the colts and the broncos came out with strong statements defending manning. al jazeera america says despite all of the denials, the network will air the documentary. jericka duncan, cbs news, new york. in nfl action, carolina's

coming up after your local here is another look at this morning's top stories. a series of deadly tornadoes destroyed hundreds of homes in texas. winds topped 200 miles an hour in some cases. the tornadoes are part of a violent storm system that caused at least 43 deaths over seven states this weekend. the rain from those storms have caused rivers to swell. flooding is a major concern this morning in a number of states. roads from alabama to missouri are swamped. several people died when their cars were swept away. with just six weeks to go before the first round of primary voting the presidential race has become a battle between hillary clinton and donald trump. in a weekend broadcast interview, the republican front-runner said the nation can't afford to have hillary

clinton as president. >> if you have another four years of like a hillary, that kind of mentality and thinking, we are not going to have a country. >> clinton has spent more time attacking trump in recent weeks. her campaign plans to send her husband, former president bill clinton, out on the campaign trail. an emergency crews continue to clean up a toxic chemical spill from a freight train derailment in northern australia. more than 5,000 gallons of acid leaked from the train on sunday and diesel fuel also spilled and three people were injured. from australia a koala bear was nursed back to health after found in a brush fire. they named her responsible k-bear and they have been giving her water and leaves from a gum tree and she looks like she is doing much better. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning," pet trends for 2016.
