went up in flames, flames seen shooting through the roof. we are live with new information, kristine? >> reporter: as you can see behind me this church is completely destroyed we learned this building was just bought by the international federation of chaplains it is a pent costal church and most people say this building cannot be replaced. >> the fire spreading quickly through this old church on main street in west orange new jersey, the building here for more than 150 years. what is it like to see this when you look over here? >> it is horrible. this was a church that's been here as long as i've been here. i live right up the street. the fire broke out just after 5:00 in the morning, huge flames engulfing the church, firefighters spending almost three hours to bring the fire

we encountered heavy smoked and fire on the second floor. >> a major loss the church itself, older than the town. >> the church itself dates back to 1827. however, the steeple which has become an iconic symbol of downtown west orange, dates back to the 1860s when veterans of the civil war left west orange, had they ever returned they still would have recognized the steeple as a familiar face. >> in recent months the church was being rented to a pentecostal congregation. >> it is like going into a museum. the orangal windows and artifacts are there. the founding pastor of the church benjamin holmes, still buried in the basement. >> now the international federation of chaplains that

holding a press conference, they tell me that someone was in the church, some are after midnight, they don't know what happened this fire right now under investigation by the prosecutor's office. well in other news people in union county new jersey woke up to a new year's surprise. they had a furry visitor. meg baker is live in summit. cindy and alex, neighbors here got quite a new year's surprise. we're standing off ashland road which may be the most popular street because because of this guy up in the tree. check out the scene earlier. >> many say this is the best thing to happen yet. an alert around 8:00 a black bear spotted high in a tree. neighbors were out early this new year's day. >> i looked out my window, there was a bear in the tree,

she was like, there is a bear she was like, there is a bear in the tree over there. we just ran to the car to come see the bear. >> kids and parents had their heads turned to the sky to get a peek of the bear. >> the kids are happy watching him all is well. the reservation is only a few miles away some say they've seen bears in this area before. >> i think it is great. i love living so close to nature, this is why we moved out of the city, black bears aren't going to hurt anybody if you are just aware just leave them alone. >> patrick said he spotted the bear move a few times. >> it was sleeping every once and awhile it would wake up and start yawning. >> i was so surprised that i saw the bear, it is just like hanging out of the tree and just like sleeping and hibernating. on scene to keep everybody across the street, as cute as they are they can be quite dangerous. police are keeping across the street keeping them over to this one side.

and wildlife will not be coming because that bear is way too high up in the tree. what they would be is to dart the bear, in this case the bear would fall too far to the ground and injure itself. we'll have an update coming up for you, we're live in summit. cbs 2 news. well in other news, two flatbush teenagers have been arrested the suspects were led away in handcuffs at the 66th precinct station house late last night. police say the teens were caught on camera punching and kicking a midwood man just before 1:00 on monday morning on avenue m. the teens stole his wallet and cell phone, the teens have been charged with second degree. a man was found dead pinned under an elevator. police were called to the building on broom street after

as crews used leaf blowers to get the last of the garbage from underneath the main stage in time's square. today, the stage empty after hosting the biggest new year's celebration in the world. it was a great experience, everyone should do it at least once. >> is million spectators watched and 1 million watched on television while the 12,000- pound crystal ball made its dissent. mixed into the crowd 6,000 nypd officers uniform and under cover. >> we were skeptical about coming out, it was great, i'm glad we took the chance. even as the blurry eyed revelers returned home many promised to return. >> nobody does it better. >> now that it is all over,

saw two attacks from isis in 2015 2015 celebrations scaled back, and grated thousands of soldiers on duty yesterday. police were also on alert. 6,000 nypd officers made sure the time's square celebration without any problems in rochester in up state new york, the fireworks display was canceled after the fbi arrested this man, emmanuel for allegedly planning an attack on a bar. saying he was an isis sympathizer. in california, security will be in place at the rose bowl parade. investigators say 14 people have been hurt in a massive new year's eve fire at a luxury building. flames and smoke are billowing from the tower. thousands gathered as flames and smoke consumed the 63 story

. breaking news, singer natalie cole has died. unforgettable . the daughter of jazz legend won numerous grammys, she has drug and health struggles in the past including a kidney transplant. she was 65 years old. actor wayne rogers who starred in mash has also died. wayne rogeredded died yesterday in los angeles of complications from pneumonia. he played trapper john and had a role on murder she wrote. the alabama native and princeton graduate became a money manager and investor. wayne rogers was 82. haven't settled on a new year's resolution looking for advice how to succeed?

>> i'm a cigarette smoker and it is very addictive i've been saying i'm going to quit for years but i know it is going to be hard this year. >> it is that time, we have all new year's resolutions we would love to keep. sometimes we set the bar too high. >> you never hit those goals are never living up this tome week by week, you just fall on your butt and it's not worth it. according to one expert you should not use the words no or never, narrow it down, much too broad to be easily obtained. you must make a resolution extremely specific. set a very specific goal. i am going to eat healthier and way 5 pounds less. that is a little different than saying i'm going to lose weight. >> we asked several revellers they did not want to commit to.

2016. . people in the midwest are spending this new year's day trying to recover from record flooding. the water is just starting to recede but not before killing people in missouri. we have reports from st. louis county. southwest of st. louis missouri, towns are under water, homes some nearly submerged. we're still at a flood stage but it is going to go down but that's a lot of water the levies hold now.

people find themselves this new year's day without a home and temperatures are now dropping below freezing. >> until this goes down, then they can come and check our homes and make sure they are safe. we can't live in them. so we're going to be out of a place to stay probably for a couple weeks at least. >> okay. just keep us updated thank you. the thorn family has lost their home in arnold due to the flooding, but for linda thorn this new year brings a sense of home. >> oh my lord it is a new beginning. i've got a great grand baby coming in. cbs 2 news, st. louis, missouri. stay so positive through all of that. the st. louis area received 10 inches of rain in just three days earlier this week. we have nothing to complain about when it comes to our forecast when you see these pictures. erika is in for john elliot. we have colder temperatures on the way, alex and cindy, nothing like what's going on up and down the mississippi river. i do have some more information

however, locally, things are pretty mild we have dry conditions as the high pressure system sits tight over canada influence our weather here. everybody is i think pretty much impressed with how comfortable conditions, 42 says, ed rhodes, keep in mind we do have cooler temperatures by next week. i love that it feels a little bit more wintery pretty much normal temperatures thank you information on weather watcher. here is a look what's going on along the mississippi river, we're seeing 16 states under a flood warning, that's because conditions, of course, those levels are above normal so we're having a lot of rain in a short amount of time, many rivers cresting 10-plus feet above flood stage, large amounts of rain and a short amount of time and you only a vehicle. the average weight of a vehicle

so year to date 2015, about 9 inches of rainfall below normal and conditions right now dry, breaks in those clouds. a little bit of sunshine peeking on through, current temperatures, 43 degrees, west northwesterly at 14 miles per hour. picking up a break in the clouds and looks like lake effect snow showers moving from west to east across the area. here is a a look at what to expect through this weekend through sunday, keep in mind we have cooler temperatures by monday. high pressure system holds. we have those colder temperatures on the way. that's what you should expect at least through this weekend and by monday we start to much cooler temperatures. temperatures dip above the freezing mark saturday and sunday and sunday into monday. seeing some 30s. the over night low tuesday into wednesday only in the 20s. that's here in the city and then we start to get a little bit warmer wednesday into

after the break. team starts practice today. coach called to see how i was doing. i blew out my knee last year. just as college football programs began calling me. i didn't realize i'd get hooked on the pain pills the doctor gave me. i never thought my life could change so fast. for now at least, football and college are going to have to wait.
