i will be women targeted in the bronx. where police say a suspected robber is preying on his victims. and it it was met for mission trips but instead church goers say this money ended up in their pastor's pockets. the video that proves this was an inside job. about a million people witness the ball drop in times square. now the temperature is dropping as well. vanessa murdock tells us how low it'll go.

this first saturday of 2016. january 2nd. i'm andrea grimes. >> and i'm diane macedo. >> first vanessa murdock is here. it was chilly outside. >> it's feeling like winter finally. and it does get even colder from here. we'll talk about single digit windchills as we make our way into tuesday morning. it is still cold out there and it is where we should be. temperatures for most of us out there in the 30s this morning. 33 in central park. 31 for white plains. 29 in the hampton. it feels colder than that. windchills in the mid20s for many. in month sell low, it feels like 15 degrees. some clouds overhead. air is dry, so much of it is evaporating.

temperatures toppling out in the 30s. 42 our high today will feel like 35. winds will be blowing out of the west-northwest at 5 to 10. it will be a sunny start to the weekend. the first weekend of the new year. also a very chilly start. but temperatures at 42 degrees, that is still above seasonable. back to you. >> thank you. our top story this morning, the nypd says it's trying to put an end to a robbery spree in the bronx. >> all the victims have been targeted while inside elevators. >> reporter: police are looking for at least one suspect. they tell us he's targeted at least five victims in elevators. most of the crimes have happened at the butler houses on webster avenue. police are releasing video of the suspect. he has a beard, he's wearing a black jacket and a black hat

station after he allegedly stole a subway card from one of the victims. he and another man in a white t- shirt are checking to see if if the card is still active. they also want to question the person who he is with. the victims, all of them women, walk into all rights and the suspect follows. that's when he demands them to hand over their purse. in one of the cases the suspect simulates having a handgun. the victim refused to give up her purse. the suspect punched her and off. these crimes took place between october 2nd and december 27th. all of them late at night or early in the morning. most were at the butler houses but one of the robberies happened a few streets away on washington avenue. police say the victims were not seriously injured but definitely shaken up. if you have any information on these crimes or that suspect, forward. live in the claremont section of the bronx.

investigating an elevator strongty that happened on the lower east side. a 25-year-old musician is being called a hero for helping a passenger get out of the broken elevator before it took his life. he was crushed as he tried to escape himself. residents say the elevators have been a problem for years. >> a funeral will be held for new york service member killed in afghanistan. lewis bonacosa was one of six americans killed on december 21st. the 31-year-old leaves behind a wife and a 5-year-old daughter. services get underway at 11:00 this morning at the new beginnings christian center. he'll be buried at calverton national cemetery. a fatal fire has been deemed suspicious. a 56-year-old man has been found dead. the fdny says it's unusual the fire started on the stairs

the brother of the man who was killed tried to run in to save him. >> he try to help his brother get out and he couldn't. fire was so intense. hi had to get out. >> one firefighter is injured but is expected to be okay. some church goers will not have a church to go to tomorrow. flames tore through early yesterday, destroying the nearly 200-year-old structure. the building recently became home to a pentecostal congregation. members were inside just the night before. but say they left before the flames started. members at an upper east side church say they want their pastor out after they say he was caught on video stealing from the church offering box. surveillance video shows a man going through money in a drawer, counting it and taking some of it. members of the church on east

church's lead past tar daniel iampaglia stealing cash. they suspected it for a while. >> we put extra 20s, we marked them, took photographs of them and sure enough on sunday when the offering was given to him, you know to deposit, 20s were missing. >> church members say they asked the pastor in writing to resign but claim he ripped up that letter. iampaglia is due in court on tuesday a. bronx woman says her new year's night out ended with an act of blatant discrimination when she was turned away at a bar. >> reporter: out with her crew to ring in to 16, corinne petido didn't expect an attitude. >> i was discriminated against because i have brown skin. >> reporter: petido a new york city schoolteacher says it happened at behans pub. she's visited before so was surprised when the bouncer turned her away.

ticketed event you can't come gave me a head nod and i walked in. >> he did not check her id and did not specify it was a ticketed event. >> reporter: petido confronted the bouncer and asked why her friend was allowed in but she was not. >> he said because you don't look like the women inside. >> the bouncer said you don't look like the other women in here. >> you heard him say that? >> absolutely. i was standing there with her. shocking. absolutely. >> i actually walked away in tears because it was just heart breaking. it really cut deep. >> i went in to get answers. the bartender referred me to a manager who wasn't around and hasn't contacted me. petido posted her concern on social media and plans to file a complaint with the city

in woodlawn the bronx, tony aiello. more legal trouble for fandual and draftkings. eric schneiderman filed a lawsuit demand, the sites give back the money won in in new york state. he's attempted to stop them from operating in new york saying allow illegal gambling. a former u.s. congressman has died. ohio republican mike oxley was known for authoring anticorporate fraud legislation. his family says he says -- the u.s. department of justice is investigating blue bell creameries after a case of its ice cream led to ten cases of listeria or food poisoning. three people are to have died. prosecutors are looking into whether higher ups are responsible for the outbreak.

base. authorities are calling it the most serious attack of its kind in recent years. the gun battle with the gunman and indian troops lasted for hours and claimed the lives of two indian soldiers. the attack comes just days after indian and pakistan launched a peace inish ty. president obama is looking to sidestep congress in an effort to curb gun violence. he'll meet with loretta lynch on monday to discuss taking executive action on the issue. he spoke about it during his weekly address. >> we know we can't stop every act of violence. what if we tried to stop even one. what if if congress did something, anything to protect our kids from gun violence. >> sources tell cbs news the president's options include expanding background checks for people looking to buy guns and requiring enhanced reporting and tracking of lost and stolen guns. people in summit, new jersey woke up to find an

a black bear dozing in a tree. bear was first spotted. people stopped by all day long to take a look. >> i looked out my window and what? there's a bear? >> what a great way to start the day. walk up and see a bear isn't the neighborhood. a while. police say new jersey fish and wildlife officers can't high. police are hoping the bear will make a peaceful exit. thousands took part in the polar bear plunge. there were fans there to serenade the swimmers as well the things. the polar bear club has been meeting on new year's day since 1903 and thanks to a warm december water temperatures in the area were in the low 50s. >> every year this makes me cold just watching it. i cannot even imagine doing it. >> i love how the low 50s is a

>> i enjoy watching it. i'll watch it from here. let's check with vanessa murdock. >> if 50s sounded chilly to you, you are in trouble because we're going to talk about a high of only 30 degrees as we make our way into tuesday. today, a little bit warmer than that. still a windchill to think about. let's go ahead and start things off live outside. a beautiful live picture of the city skyline this morning from high atop the empire state building. cold and breezy. 33 degrees in central park. west winds at 18 miles per hour are knocking the feels like temperatures into the 20s. your headlines, a chilly start to the new year. and really only chilly because december was so warm. the warmest december on record. the coldest days of the seven day forecast will be monday into tuesday. tuesday being the worst of it. temperatures start to become more mild wednesday through friday. as we go ahead and look at the temperature trend, it was 42

normal high is 39. today, 42 as well. tomorrow, 43. and then monday, 36. temperatures continue to go down from there. tuesday's low as we wake up, it's going to be 19 degrees. last time it was that cold was march 7th. it was 18 degrees that morning. the nor low is 27 degrees. so certainly something to consider that that cold air will be piling on in and it begins now. the temperatures out there are present. 32 in al pine. 25 in monticello. cranberry at 33. windchills making it feel colder. 26 in roslin. down to 23 in monticello. windchills down to 15 degrees this morning. on the vortex satellite and radar, we do have high, thin clouds out there. especially well to the west and northwest of the city. notice the potential for a few stray snow flakes, most of that is not reaching the ground there.

just evaporates as it falls. nonetheless, there are some clouds well to the west of the city. cold air is moving in, we have high pressure dominating your weekend forecast. winds will be around that area of high pressure generally out of the west-northwest. pumping in colder air. that's for the weekend. as we head into tuesday, the jet stream takes a big dip to our south. as that happens we get a little bit of a bitter blast. morning temperatures in the teens for most on tuesday. single digit windchills possible early tuesday morning. and highs that day, well, we'll be lucky if we even reach the freezing mark. for today, 42 will feel like the 30s under mostly sunny skies. winds out of the northwest 10 to 15 miles per hour. tonight, mainly clear and cold. 33 degrees for the suburbs. 20s tomorrow morning's windchills won't be as significant because the winds will be calmer. tomorrow, bright and brisk. a high of 43 degrees to end the weekend. winds out of the west at 10 to 15. anticipating windchills

feel like the 30s. then look at monday. the high is just 36 degrees. in addition to that, expect the potential for passing snow showers as we get into monday afternoon and evening through the overnight hours into early tuesday. overnight monday into tuesday, we bottom out at 19 degrees. it'll feel like single digits as you wake up tuesday morning for some. 30 the high tuesday. that's under very sunny skies by afternoon. but also it will feel more like the 20s and teens outs there. we start to warm back up. it's a dry forecast with the exempt exception for the monday afternoon potential. >> sunny skies but 30 degrees. come on. >> that's what's in winter. the bright blue sky days are very deceiving. those are generally the coldest days of winter. >> thanks. philadelphia celebrated the first day of 2016 with its parade. upwards of 10,000 people participated.

him in 1991. >> reporter: she found her own voice and success along the way. cole won the first of nine grammies in 1975 with the hit "this will be." she received a star on the hollywood walk of fame. were setbacks. cole developed an addiction to drugs and alcohol. entering rehab in 1983. >> it was a revelation for me all these years. i didn't realize i was still grieving for my father at 30 something. >> reporter: cole was diagnosed with hepatitis c and liver disease. she underwent a kidney transplant in 2009. >> i'm a talking testimony to you can have scars y, you can go through turbulent times. >> reporter: cole recently canceled tour dates due to her health. natalie cole was 65 years old.

the first saturday of 2016. january 2nd. >> the day's top stories are straight ahead. vanessa murdock is here with a look at the forecast. we have not talked about temperatures this low in a while. >> in a very long while. we're going to talk about temperatures that we haven't but that's not today. today is still a little bit warmer. this morning though temperatures for most of us in the 30s. upper 20s out there. feeling more like the 20s for just about all of us. 33 degrees in central park. 31 in bronxville. 28 middletown. feels like 23 in new canon. in the city the windchill is 25 degrees. with cold air in place, any precipitation will be falling in the form of snow. we do have reports of light snow falling for areas well to the northwest of the city this morning. you can see that happening there. much of it evaporating before

what we'll see today are mostly sunny skies. that snow starts to ease on up and skies will be clearing. it's going to be a very brisk, bright day. 38 degrees at noon. winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15 degrees. it'll feel more like 30. by 3:00, 42 degrees. will feel like the mid30s under mostly sunny skies. by 9:00, down to 34 degrees. little bit of a breeze out there. feeling like the upper 20s. full forecast is coming up. we'll talk about snow and that very cold air diving in for your forecast. >> thank you. now to our top story. police in the bronx are trying to put an end to a robbery spree. >> the suspect is targeting victims when they're inside an elevator. cbs 2 is in the claremont section with more. >> reporter: police say the suspect is following women into elevators and then robbing them. most of the crimes have happened right here at the butler houses. this is right on webster avenue.

here warning the public to be aware. we want to show you this video from the nypd that shows the suspect. investigators say he has a beard, he's wearing a black jacket and a black hat. cameras captured him in the subway after he allegedly stole a subway card from a victim. he and another man are swiping that card to see if it still works. police want to question that man to see if he's possibly involved in any of the crimes. the first robbery was on october 2nd. there have been five of them. the last one was on sunday. all of them are happening late at night or early in the morning. police tell us the victims, again, all of them women, are getting trapped in the elevators with the suspect. they say in some of the instances he's leading them to leave he has a gun and steals their purses. one of the victims actually refused. she held on to her bag and that's when the suspect supposedly punched her, then ripped the purse off her shoulder and took off. all of the robberies happened within a few blocks of each other. most at the butler houses,

on sunday when the offering was given to him to deposit, twenty were missing. >> church members asked the pastor in writing to resign but clip he ripped up that -- claim he ripped up that letter. there's more legal trouble for the sites fanduel and draftkings. erik schneiderman filed a lawsuit seeking that the fantasy sports websites give back all of the money they won in new york state. the lawsuit is the latest between schneiderman and the sites. he's attempted to stop them from operating in new york saying they allow illegal gambling. a former u.s. congressman known for coauthoring legislation in the wake of the enron scandal has died. ohio republican mike oxley. his family says he was suffering from a recurrence of nonsmoking lung cancer and died yesterday. he was 71 years old. blue bell creameries is being investigated for how it

flooding has left at least 22 people dead. farther south two more levies buckled, bringing it to at least 11 the number of levy failures. numerous homes are threatened by the rising waters. back at home the warm weather has hurt this year's ski season and resorts are desperate for snow. but some say fear not, the snow guns are blowing. >> lou young traveled to watch winter arrive. >> two hours west of manhattan the snow guns are spraying icy mist into the mountain air. the noise deafening at close reign is music to holiday visitors who envisioned a more seasonable landscape. the general consensus, it's about time. >> on january 1st it should snow. >> it is now. >> it is now. i love it. >> that's how weary winter worshipers are these days. once they would have complained about a lack of natural snow. now anything will do. for some even this comes cruelly late in the game.

able to ski these slopes. no, i have to go home. >> it takes days of doing this to make a skiable surface and these snow guns have been fired up three times. each time previously the warm winter has undone their work. this time the snow makers say they're feeling it. >> now we've got a good forecast ahead. we're excited to be oprahing. >> it hopes ticketholders will be in the seats on monday. they've started making snow at mountain creek in new jersey as well. upstate new york slopes are pushing the stuff out. none too soon for a ski team member from brew store high school. >> it's been ridiculous. after praying and doing so many snow dances we have finally got snow here. >> be comforted the fake flakes are falling as you sleep. kind of cool to see how they do that. lou looked like he was in the middle of a blizzard.

>> maybe doing a snow dance. let's check in with vanessa murdock and see if we have snow coming our way. vanessa. >> monday there is a chance for very fast moving snow showers need. they need a big whopper of a storm to lay down the base and forecast. we do have some very cold air, so the snow making process will be much simpler and more straightforward moving ahead. they won't have that daytime melt they've been dealing with. as we check in with our weather watchers this morning. first thing i'd like to do is head up well north here. 25 degrees says tony. he's reporting snow showers this morning. not the case for everybody. those snow showers really isolated well north and west of the city as we head on down into new jersey. reporting 27 degrees in cedar grove this morning. a few clouds. generally speaking we do have high, thin clouds overhead for most of us now. we are anticipating a very bright start to this first

live outside, you can see the thin clouds out there. it's cold and breezy. 33 degrees with west winds at 18 miles per hour. couple the winds with the temp and it feels like the 20s. headlines, chilly start to the new year. as it should be. it's winter. the coldest days will be monday and tuesday. we'll talk about starting your day off in the single digits for some on tuesday morning. then as we make our way wednesday through friday, the temperatures become more mild again. today, 42 degrees the anticipated high. the normal high is 39. but of course this is not the full story. it will feel like the mid30s. feeling winter blues because of the lack of sunlight, some good news. toward the end of the month we will start to see more sun. today that sunrise time 7:20. by january 31st it is going to be 7:07. and of course the sunset time is also moving a little bit later in the day. so things are shaping up nicely. but also more cold.
