i will be women targeted in the bronx. where police say a suspected robber is preying on his victims. and it it was met for mission trips but instead church goers say this money ended up in their pastor's pockets. the video that proves this was an inside job. about a million people witness the ball drop in times square. now the temperature is dropping as well. vanessa murdock tells us how low it'll go.

this first saturday of 2016. january 2nd. i'm andrea grimes. >> and i'm diane macedo. >> first vanessa murdock is here. it was chilly outside. >> it's feeling like winter finally. and it does get even colder from here. we'll talk about single digit windchills as we make our way into tuesday morning. it is still cold out there and it is where we should be. temperatures for most of us out there in the 30s this morning. 33 in central park. 31 for white plains. 29 in the hampton. it feels colder than that. windchills in the mid20s for many. in month sell low, it feels like 15 degrees. some clouds overhead. air is dry, so much of it is evaporating.

temperatures toppling out in the 30s. 42 our high today will feel like 35. winds will be blowing out of the west-northwest at 5 to 10. it will be a sunny start to the weekend. the first weekend of the new year. also a very chilly start. but temperatures at 42 degrees, that is still above seasonable. back to you. >> thank you. our top story this morning, the nypd says it's trying to put an end to a robbery spree in the bronx. >> all the victims have been targeted while inside elevators. >> reporter: police are looking for at least one suspect. they tell us he's targeted at least five victims in elevators. most of the crimes have happened at the butler houses on webster avenue. police are releasing video of the suspect. he has a beard, he's wearing a black jacket and a black hat

station after he allegedly stole a subway card from one of the victims. he and another man in a white t- shirt are checking to see if if the card is still active. they also want to question the person who he is with. the victims, all of them women, walk into all rights and the suspect follows. that's when he demands them to hand over their purse. in one of the cases the suspect simulates having a handgun. the victim refused to give up her purse. the suspect punched her and off. these crimes took place between october 2nd and december 27th. all of them late at night or early in the morning. most were at the butler houses but one of the robberies happened a few streets away on washington avenue. police say the victims were not seriously injured but definitely shaken up. if you have any information on these crimes or that suspect, forward. live in the claremont section of the bronx.

investigating an elevator strongty that happened on the lower east side. a 25-year-old musician is being called a hero for helping a passenger get out of the broken elevator before it took his life. he was crushed as he tried to escape himself. residents say the elevators have been a problem for years. >> a funeral will be held for new york service member killed in afghanistan. lewis bonacosa was one of six americans killed on december 21st. the 31-year-old leaves behind a wife and a 5-year-old daughter. services get underway at 11:00 this morning at the new beginnings christian center. he'll be buried at calverton national cemetery. a fatal fire has been deemed suspicious. a 56-year-old man has been found dead. the fdny says it's unusual the fire started on the stairs

the brother of the man who was killed tried to run in to save him. >> he try to help his brother get out and he couldn't. fire was so intense. hi had to get out. >> one firefighter is injured but is expected to be okay. some church goers will not have a church to go to tomorrow. flames tore through early yesterday, destroying the nearly 200-year-old structure. the building recently became home to a pentecostal congregation. members were inside just the night before. but say they left before the flames started. members at an upper east side church say they want their pastor out after they say he was caught on video stealing from the church offering box. surveillance video shows a man going through money in a drawer, counting it and taking some of it. members of the church on east

church's lead past tar daniel iampaglia stealing cash. they suspected it for a while. >> we put extra 20s, we marked them, took photographs of them and sure enough on sunday when the offering was given to him, you know to deposit, 20s were missing. >> church members say they asked the pastor in writing to resign but claim he ripped up that letter. iampaglia is due in court on tuesday a. bronx woman says her new year's night out ended with an act of blatant discrimination when she was turned away at a bar. >> reporter: out with her crew to ring in to 16, corinne petido didn't expect an attitude. >> i was discriminated against because i have brown skin. >> reporter: petido a new york city schoolteacher says it happened at behans pub. she's visited before so was surprised when the bouncer turned her away.

ticketed event you can't come gave me a head nod and i walked in. >> he did not check her id and did not specify it was a ticketed event. >> reporter: petido confronted the bouncer and asked why her friend was allowed in but she was not. >> he said because you don't look like the women inside. >> the bouncer said you don't look like the other women in here. >> you heard him say that? >> absolutely. i was standing there with her. shocking. absolutely. >> i actually walked away in tears because it was just heart breaking. it really cut deep. >> i went in to get answers. the bartender referred me to a manager who wasn't around and hasn't contacted me. petido posted her concern on social media and plans to file a complaint with the city

in woodlawn the bronx, tony aiello. more legal trouble for fandual and draftkings. eric schneiderman filed a lawsuit demand, the sites give back the money won in in new york state. he's attempted to stop them from operating in new york saying allow illegal gambling. a former u.s. congressman has died. ohio republican mike oxley was known for authoring anticorporate fraud legislation. his family says he says -- the u.s. department of justice is investigating blue bell creameries after a case of its ice cream led to ten cases of listeria or food poisoning. three people are to have died. prosecutors are looking into whether higher ups are responsible for the outbreak.

normal high is 39. today, 42 as well. tomorrow, 43. and then monday, 36. temperatures continue to go down from there. tuesday's low as we wake up, it's going to be 19 degrees. last time it was that cold was march 7th. it was 18 degrees that morning. the nor low is 27 degrees. so certainly something to consider that that cold air will be piling on in and it begins now. the temperatures out there are present. 32 in al pine. 25 in monticello. cranberry at 33. windchills making it feel colder. 26 in roslin. down to 23 in monticello. windchills down to 15 degrees this morning. on the vortex satellite and radar, we do have high, thin clouds out there. especially well to the west and northwest of the city. notice the potential for a few stray snow flakes, most of that is not reaching the ground there.

just evaporates as it falls. nonetheless, there are some clouds well to the west of the city. cold air is moving in, we have high pressure dominating your weekend forecast. winds will be around that area of high pressure generally out of the west-northwest. pumping in colder air. that's for the weekend. as we head into tuesday, the jet stream takes a big dip to our south. as that happens we get a little bit of a bitter blast. morning temperatures in the teens for most on tuesday. single digit windchills possible early tuesday morning. and highs that day, well, we'll be lucky if we even reach the freezing mark. for today, 42 will feel like the 30s under mostly sunny skies. winds out of the northwest 10 to 15 miles per hour. tonight, mainly clear and cold. 33 degrees for the suburbs. 20s tomorrow morning's windchills won't be as significant because the winds will be calmer. tomorrow, bright and brisk. a high of 43 degrees to end the weekend. winds out of the west at 10 to 15. anticipating windchills

what we'll see today are mostly sunny skies. that snow starts to ease on up and skies will be clearing. it's going to be a very brisk, bright day. 38 degrees at noon. winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15 degrees. it'll feel more like 30. by 3:00, 42 degrees. will feel like the mid30s under mostly sunny skies. by 9:00, down to 34 degrees. little bit of a breeze out there. feeling like the upper 20s. full forecast is coming up. we'll talk about snow and that very cold air diving in for your forecast. >> thank you. now to our top story. police in the bronx are trying to put an end to a robbery spree. >> the suspect is targeting victims when they're inside an elevator. cbs 2 is in the claremont section with more. >> reporter: police say the suspect is following women into elevators and then robbing them. most of the crimes have happened right here at the butler houses. this is right on webster avenue.

here warning the public to be aware. we want to show you this video from the nypd that shows the suspect. investigators say he has a beard, he's wearing a black jacket and a black hat. cameras captured him in the subway after he allegedly stole a subway card from a victim. he and another man are swiping that card to see if it still works. police want to question that man to see if he's possibly involved in any of the crimes. the first robbery was on october 2nd. there have been five of them. the last one was on sunday. all of them are happening late at night or early in the morning. police tell us the victims, again, all of them women, are getting trapped in the elevators with the suspect. they say in some of the instances he's leading them to leave he has a gun and steals their purses. one of the victims actually refused. she held on to her bag and that's when the suspect supposedly punched her, then ripped the purse off her shoulder and took off. all of the robberies happened within a few blocks of each other. most at the butler houses,
