live from studio 46, this is cbs 2 news this morning. good morning. coming up on 8:00 a.m. on this sunday, january 3rd i'm diana macedo. >> i'm andrea grymes. first vanessa murdock is here with a look at the forecast. >> we've done a 180. it's going to be fridged tomorrow into tuesday. today still lightly above normal but it's going to feel like the 30s. a very chilly end to the weekend but i'm not going to call it cold just yet. it's not quite there. we'll get there though. let's take a look at right now . 36 in the city, 40 great neck, richfield at 35. the windchill making it feel like 29 degrees in richfield and in tom's river it feels like 28 as we start off this sunday morning. on the vortex satellite and radar picture we've got beautiful bluff skies over head but notice

to make their way in from the northwest. for today we'll see plenty of sunshine but as a front pushes in we will see more clouds as the day progresses. by 9:00 a.m. 37 degrees, feels like 32. by noon 42 is feeling like 35. mostly sunny skies. it will be windy today. winds at 10 to 20 miles per hour. our high at 3:00 of 44 will feel like 38. after that you'll notice those clouds thickening even more and we could see a stray snow shower north or west of the city as we get into the late afternoon and evening hours. coming up in your full forecast we will talk about arctic air. it will make for some single digit windchills into tuesday morning. andrea and diane. breaking news from the bronx where an investigation is underway into a deadly fire that broke out in an apartment

>> cbs 2's hand ilana gold -- cbs 2 news ilana gold is live. >> reporter: one man died and three other people were rushed to the hospital with minor injuries. we want to show you picture from the scene from earlier this morning. you can see the tenants standing on their balconies at 2:30. this is on east 230th street by white plains road. they grabbed whatever they could and went down the fire escapes. firefighters said the frames were centralized to a third story unit. his name is not being released. a family who lives down from him said the victim just came home from the hospital yesterday and he was there for a week and he returned in a wheelchair so he had limited mobility. they said the smoke was smothering, they could barely see. >> i saw smoke and it was very dark. >> your whole hallway was full

i woke up any son and grabbed all the necessary stuff. >> my mom woke me up and reran to the kitchen window where the fire escape was at and went straight down the fire escape. i threw my little sister on my back and took her down the fire escape. >> reporter: that family says they could hear the victim screaming for help. they also tell us his teenage relative was in that apartment when the fire started and they managed to escape. their loved ones were here earlier this morning and as you can imagine they are just devastated. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. police in new jersey are investigates threats made against the mayor and two city buildings. they found two letters dated from october. his press secretary said the city of newark is continuing holiday

a threat to city facilities and the life of the mayor. police are saying a woman found dead in her queen's apartment building friday night was murdered. they found jocelyn romo lying face down in her bed in her wood haven home. it's new york city's first murder case of 2016. the nypd is investigating a double shooting in east harlem. it happened last night on 3rd avenue and east 104th street around 8:00 after an argument. the victim is a 27-year-old man and a 32-year-old man are being their conditions are unknown. no arrests have been made. hundreds of people gathered on long island to say a final good-bye to a new york service >> [ music ] >> air force staff sergeant louis bonacasa was one of six

bombing on december oh -- on december 21st. yesterday his wife, debra, paid tribute to her husband. her voice could be heard on the loud speakers outside the church. >> i take comfort in knowing his passing wasn't in vain and he fought doing what he loved so he may live onto continue his legacy. >> bonacasa was buried yesterday at calverton national cemetery. joseph lemm was killed in that same attack. thousands of police officers attended his funeral on wednesday. a car crash early yesterday morning killed an off-duty police captain in new jersey. ocean township police say 38-year-old earl alexander lost control of his accra on state highway 71 shortly after midnight. the car flipped on its side and hit a utility pole. he was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

of a cleric. he was one of 47 prisoners killed in a mass excuse. saudi officials say the men were part of al-qaeda but he was known as a peaceful reformer. news of his death sparked a wave of protests around the region. two teenagers are under arrest in a brick throwing incident on the meadowbrook parkway and facing some serious charges. scott rapaport has more from long island on the suspects. >> 17-year-old andrew denton and 18-year-old jacob palant are the people responsible for throwing a brick through the windshield of this bmw saturday night on december 26th with damaging and potentially devastating consequences. >> the two passengers in the car were injured and described as lucky to be alive. >> i don't understand.

charged with felony second degree assault, felony criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. palant was released on $25,000 cash bail. >> i'm from cbs 2 news. >> no comment. >> the family declined to comment. following the brick throwing the passengers in the bmw, 22-year-old brianna rios was treated for an eye injury and bruising to the mouth. her companion 21-year-old ryan civitello ended up with a bruised shoulder. >> this ryan civitello's house? >> no, he's not here. >> police tell cbs 2 they managed to discover the suspects through, quote, word of mouth. denton also is in jail on 1 -- on $1

a selfie landed a california man behind bars. he robbed a group at gunpoint as they sat in their cars. the suspect sent a selfie to the victim who in turn turned it over to police. investigators say that shot led them to the suspect. alonzo martinez was charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and probation violation. the search continues for two other suspects. time now 8:08. from long island to the vatican some teens are probably spending their best week ever right now after getting a rare invitation from the pope. first let's check in with vanessa for a look at the forecast. >> a lot of sunshine today. it will be chilly. we'll talk about frigid air making its way in, some sub zero wind chills. your full forecast is coming up.

good morning to you-all. 8:10, 36 degrees out there. those temperatures are going to creep a little bit lower. we'll check in with vanessa murdock and your weather forecast in just a moment. right now the powerball jackpot is a whooping $400 million. lottery officials say nobody won the grand prize last night in the first powerball drawing of the year. last night's jackpot had grown to an estimated $355 million. that's the 12th largest in powerball history. last night's numbers were 5, 6, 15, 29, 42 and the powerball was 10. the next drawing will be held on wednesday. the first family wrapped their hawaii vacation by taking a trip to the honolulu zoo yesterday. president obama is

yourself mentally and physically for an arctic blast because it's coming. live outside this morning the camera is moving. it will be a windy day again. right now clear skies, 36, southwest winds at 9. today 10 to 20 miles per hour winds. for today sunshine, a chilly breeze, more clouds later on today, maybe a snow shower north and west of the city. an arctic blast to start the work week. we're talking high temperatures that will struggle to reach the freezing mark with wind chills in the teens and low 20s mid afternoon. lowest chills expected tuesday morning. single digits, sub zero windchills for some. after that temperatures begin to warm back up and it will be a dry stretch through the end of the week. monday into tuesday with that jet stream well to our south, the cold air just piling on in, morning temperatures in the single digits and teens with those sub zero wind chills possible at times, high temperatures on tuesday below freezing for most.

that's the same case on monday as well. monday and tuesday we will struggle to get to the freezing mark. as far as wind chills go, i want to break it down for you as we go through the next couple of days. this morning feeling like the 20s out there for us. this afternoon highs in the 40s will feel like the 30s for most of us. over night into monday morning that arctic air is building on in. feels like 21 tomorrow morning in the city, feels like 6 in liberty. i think these could be more in the teens tomorrow morning. by the afternoon we're in the teens. it's just going to be maintaining that temperature tomorrow. the winds will be whipping and it's going to feel like the teens and whether or not he 20s tomorrow afternoon. tuesday morning here we are at 6:00 a.m. did you see those numbers dropping below zero well north of the city? init will happen monday night into tuesday. tuesday morning you start feeling like 5 in the city, feeling like 1 in liberty. the vortex satellite and radar picture from right now we have clear skies over head, high pressure is dominating. this cold front moves through today.

he was always so kind and they're in absolute shock. >> just very, very scary. very traumatized just to see the whole situation unfold right in front of my eyes and later found out it was my good friend. >> it's very traumatizing and very sad. if i had heard the victim myself i definitely would have went and got him myself and took him out of his apartment. >> reporter: such a difficult morning for the people who live here. we're told three other tenants were taken to a near by hospital and treated for minor injuries. at this point the cause of the fire is still under investigation. we're live in the wakefield section of the bronx this morning, ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. new this morning, police in new jersey are investigating threats made against newark mayor and city building. the mayor found two threaten letters at his mother's home this weekend. they were dated in october.

the time of the crash. saudi arabia executed 47 people yesterday in its largest mass execution since 1980. jonathan biglati has more. >> saudi state run television reported all 47 men killed in the mass execution were members of al-qaeda including prominent cleric nimir al nimir. he was known as a peaceful performest by others. >> news of his death sparked protests around the region. police had to fire tear gas. in saudi arabia near his home men and women took to the street chanting. >> iran used their state run

>> nimir rose to prominent after demanding for rights. this marks the largest mass execution in the past few decades. saudi officials said it was a legal way to ensure justice. >> iran's foreign minister said it will cost saudi arabia dearly. more protests are already scheduled in iran and several other countries. police have identified the gunman wanted for killing two people outside a bar in televiv. the suspected shooter's father called police after seeing surveillance video of the shooting. relatives say he's a troubled man traumatized after a cousin was killed by police in 2006. he's on the run. israel's prime minister said the brutality was incomprehensible.

-- 17 guantanamo detainees have been cleared for release last week. they will be sent to other countries. that will leave 90 detainees still at the prison. 59 are not eligible to be transferred to another country so they would need to be moved to a prison in the united states if guantanamo is closed. president obama vowed to close that prison when he was first elected. two teenagers are under arrest in a brick throwing incident on the meadowbrook parkway. >> authorities say these two teens, 17-year-old andrew denton from east meadow and 19-year-old jacob palant arepeople responsible for throwing a brick through the windshield of this bmw from this over pass on to the meadowbrook parkway on saturday night, december 26th.

right now 34 degrees says david taylor in beyon. today we anticipate winds out of the west at 10 to 20 miles per hour. 21 degrees being reported by jackson in harold bloom. let's take a look outside. looking lovely, clear and crisp. 36 degrees in central park right now. winds are out of the southwest at 9 miles per hour. your headlines, bright skies today but a chilly breeze. highs in the 40s will feel like the 30s. then an arctic blast moves in for monday and tuesday. highs will be close to the freezing mark will feel like the teens and low 20s monday and tuesday. here's that temperature trend. for the first day of the new year, 42 degrees. yesterday a high of 40 felt like the 30s. similar story today, a little bit warmer. still it is going to feel like the 30s out there. monday a high of 32.

most of us will struggle to even reach 30 degrees. we're talking about freezing. the last time central park fell below 32 degrees was on march 29th. that was over 9 months ago. we're going to fall well below 32. the morning temperature tuesday, 16 degrees but it's going to feel more like that. these are the wind chills on tuesday. it's going to feel like 5 degrees to 5 below north and west of the city, 0 to 10 everywhere else. by the afternoon it feels like the teens and low 20s. it's going to be frigid tomorrow and tuesday. here's the set up. we've got beautiful blue skies right now thanks to this big area of high pressure. today a cold front will sweep on through and that arctic air slides in right behind it. as this front gets closer to us we'll see increasing clouds, maybe, maybe a stray snow shower well north and west of the city. can't rule that out.
