tensions rise in the high desert of oregon. armed protesters take control of federal lands in a show of force against the government. the first look at the cargo ship lost with 33 people on board during hurricane joaquin. investigators hint at new search for the ship's black box, while questions remain why the freighter sailed into the storm. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. later this week, president obama is expected to sign new executive actions to control guns in this country. today the president meets with the attorney general to discuss his options for tightening the rules governing guns. critics say mr. obama is overreaching his authority. brian webb is in new york with more on that. >> reporter: part of the president's plan includes

closing the so-called gun show loophole and it's becoming a major focus to candidates vying for the white house. democratic front-runner hillary clinton is praising president obama for executive actions he intends to unveil this week that would strengthen background checks on gun purchases. >> if congress won't act, we have to do something about the fact 33,000 people a year die from guns. >> reporter: bernie sanders, who is trailing clinton in the polls, also backed the president's moves. on sunday, the vermont senator criticized republicans for failing to work with democrats on the issue. >> i would prefer that we could have bipartisan support but the truth is republicans are not interested in doing anything about gun safety. >> reporter: republican presidential contenders are already threatening to undo any of the president's actions. donald trump led the charge during an appearance on cbs' "face the nation." >> i don't like anything having to do with changing our second amendment.

we have plenty of rules and regulations, there is plenty of things that they can do. all they want to do is blame the guns and it's not the gun that pulls the trigger. >> reporter: several other gop contenders expressed similar views. >> this president wants to act as if he is a king, as if he is a dictator. >> we laecketed president that has waged war on the constitution. >> reporter: president obama will meet with attorney general loretta lynch later today to discuss new actions to help reduce gun violence. sources tell cbs news the options the president is looking into include expanding the desks of who is in the business of selling guns so that more gun sales trigger background checks. and requiring enhanced reporting and tracking of lost and stolen guns. >> brian webb here in new york, thanks a lot, brian. bill clinton makes his first solo campaign appearance today in new hampshire. clinton returns to the state where he was dubbed the comeback kid back in 1992. the former president finished second after headlines of an

affair nearly swamped his campaign. >> he'll be here in new hampshire tomorrow and he is so excited about coming back to the granite state! >> her husband's infidelities have become a campaign issue for hillary clinton. donald trump has used bill clinton's affairs to attack the democratic front-runner. >> i mean, what he did and what he has gone through, i think, is, frankly, terrible, especially if she wants to play the woman card. >> hillary clinton has not responded to trump's personal attacks on her husband and bill clinton is not expected to either. coming up on the "morning news." we will talk about the escalating war of words between donald trump and hillary clinton with cbs news political director and "face the nation" moderator john dickerson. in eastern oregon this morning, armed protesters continue their occupation of a national wildlife refuge. the fbi says it's working to bring a peaceful resolution to the situation. it's part of an ongoing dispute

over the use of public lands. in this case, the issue is ranchers rights and a prison sentence given to a rancher and his son. in the middle of it all, a family well-known for its anti-government sentiment. jennifer do you living reports. >> reporter: the constitution. >> reporter: an american flag draped the sign out here 280 miles southeast of portland. an armed militia took over the headquarters building saturday night. amman bundy, the son of nevada rancher cliven bundy. they were involved in a land dispute with the government in 2014. >> now this refuge here is rightfully owned by the people and we -- and we intend to use it. >> reporter: the group is protest ago decision by a federal judge to resentence 73-year-old dwight hammond and his 46-year-old son steven. the ranchers were convicted of arsons three years ago and

their sentences weren't long enough. >> it's clearly double jeopardy. they have already served their time. >> reporter: the men claim they set the fires to protect their property from wildfires. the militia and dozens of protesters held a rally to support the hammond's in burns saturday. >> it's not about me. it's about america. and somehow we got to get the wheels back on this wagon because they are flying off. >> reporter: the hammond's are expected to report to jail monday. bundy's group have made themselves at home. they say they plan on staying at the refuge indefinitely. burns, oregon. a powerful and deadly earthquake hit northeast india. at least six people were killed and more than a hundred others injured by the 6.7 magnitude quake. several buildings collapsed, including a newly constructed six-story building. electric service and communications have been knocked out in some areas. this morning, a string of

headed to california and the southwest. the storm track is being fueled by el nino which causes above average temperatures in the pacific ocean. along the california coast, residents are preparing for the worst. potential floods and mudslides. west facing beaches can expect 20 to 30-foot waves on wednesday and thursday. >> it's a powerful surf and a lot of strong currents and possibility of local flooding for low lying areas. >> in oregon and southwest washington, snow and freezing rain are causing travel delays. an inch of snow fell in portland yesterday and a winter weather advisory is in effect until this morning. all city offices are closed today. in the midwest, the mississippi river and other waterways that flooded last week have begun to back down, for the most part. along the river, areas remain under flood watches watches offer advisories, though. 25 deaths in the two states are blamed on the historically high water.

new video from the ntsb shows the final resting place of the american ship el faro that went down during a hurricane in october. all 33 people on board died in the tragedy. the 8 hundred-foot cargo ship now sits on the bottom of the atlantic, 15,000 feet below the surface. federal investigators may launch a new attempt to find the freighter's black box. the el faro sank in the bermuda triangle sailing from florida to puerto rico. on last night's "60 minutes" scott pelley spoke to the families who had members who died on that ship. >> why was the ship 40 years ago still put in service. >> reporter: the families of the crew have many questions. glenn jackson lost his brother jack. >> why was a ship that-grandfathered in to not have the enclosed life boat be
