3:45 a.m., sunday on the corner a 23-year-old woman comes home from a night at a local club, hears knock at the door a man is his 20s, says he lives downstairs and smells smoke. he looks around and announced you should not have let me in, according to police. the man sexually assaults the young woman robs her and leaves. people in this neighborhood are on edge. >> it is horrifying, especially here, you know. with this very safe neighborhood. >> the biggest mistake people do is trust, especially, you have to understand you're in new york, somebody knocks on your door they smell smoke, fire! you think and you run. >> there is a police sketch of the suspect, the description of this suspect a white man about 6 feet tall, in his 20s black hair brown eyes there are some photos that police are

and released from a local hospital. the suspect is still on the loose. live in the west village, cbs 2 news. steve, thank you. now to philadelphia where an officer is recovering after surviving a violent ambush. investigators say he fired 13 rounds, three hitting the officer, cbs 2 joins us live from west philadelphia with more, justin. mary, good afternoon and new this afternoon, police sources telling us this suspect gave them a full confession saying he shot this officer 13 times in the name of islam. i want to pull up a photo, this is from surveillance video, taken at the time of the shooting it shows that suspect hovering over that cruiser firing inside, he was hit and on track to recover. about midnight the officer made a frightening call for him. >> i've been shot, bleeding heavily.

range while inside his cruiser. his father got the news soon after. knocking at the door, and ringing my phone. >> police say officer heartnet returned fire taking down the suspect as he tried to run away. >> this is absolutely one of the scariest things i've ever seen. this guy tried to execute the police officer, the police officer had no idea he was coming. hit the suspect 13 times and the gunman was taken into custody. the officer fighting back despite three gunshots. >> just walked up right on top of him and firing the entire sad. philadelphia mayor is calling for more gun control. there are too many guns, too many guns on our streets, i think our national governor that. >> meantime the father knows his son has one more fight

be a tough road, a tough guy, and a philadelphia officer. police tell us this officer will now have to overcome some broken bones and possibly nerve damage, at this time we're told he'll have to thank for himself and his quick reaction to bring him out of what could have been a fatal situation. this is the latest here in philadelphia, over to you. in west philadelphia for us, thank you. and oxygen leak leads to an emergency hazmat situation causing the er to be evacuated this afternoon officials say the area is once again safe. janelle burrell reports on the west side. all clear as crews continue to work and repair and remace oxygen tanks outside of the emergency department at mount sinai west, after what was a busy morning for their staff. it started shortly before 2:00

from a residential building next to the hospital on west 59th street. the impact breaking align to the oxygen tank just outside of the emergency department. the leaking oxygen a major fire hazard triggering a swarm of police firefighters and hazmat crews to shut down 59th between ninth and 10th avenues. as a precaution patients in the emergency room were moved to other areas of the hospital as crews work to stop the leak. >> just absolutely frightening. it is frightening to think it is someone in your building. this is a family neighborhood, just very scary. >> people who live in the building next door waking up to the scene of flashing lights neither the residents nor patients were impacted. >> it is scary for one. i had no idea, oh my god. >> before 6:00 police say the leak was contained, the area now determined to be safe. seems like everything is taken

the final day what's been a historically bad week of wall street. >> maybe they could get a homer. >> last week the dow fell 400 points driven in large part by chaos in the chinese markets. it's been a terrible worse four days of the year and the s&p 500. >> today the shanghai composite gains some ground but a 7% -- for the second time this week, authorities quickly realized that may have triggered more panic so they reversed course including a manufacturing slow down the labor shortage and currentcy.

growth. >> a jobs report came out saying employers added 292,000 jobs in december. the unemployment rate remains unchanged at 5%. as for the wild week on wall street. cbs news business analyst says it is important for investors right now to stay calm. >> if you don't like the sell offs, if they are too much for you to bare, you may want to think of reducing the amount of risk you have in your portfolio. if you need that money in the next year that money shouldn't be in risky assets like stocks. another factor influencing the u.s. markets is of course the price of oil. one business expert says that this week's losses should not be a predicter of the year ahead. we'll have to see. reporting live this noon from wall street. andrea grimes.

days after president obama announced executive actions aimed at reducing gun violence. he took his pitch on the road participated in a town hall meeting and argued his restrictions. >> the way it is described is everybody's guns. the president said he never owned a gun and has little experience with firearms but he says his policies and positions on guns has helped gun manufactures. >> i've been president for over seven years, and gun sales don't seem to have suffered during that time. >> if anything you've helped. >> they've gone up. i've been very good for gun manufactures. some high profile victims of gun violence were in the audience, george mason university including gabby giffords who was shot in the heads, and taya whose husband chris kyle was shot and killed by a former marine.

they are calling for tougher inspection laws, elana gold with the details. >> reporter: the accident at 131 broom treat turned deadly on new year's eve. an elevator stalled between the second and third floors, witnesses say when the doors open he helped push a woman up and out of the elevator to safety. when it went down, he got crushed. they tell us they've been dealing with elevator scares here for years and had trouble just yesterday. >> i took the elevator. it got stuck on the sixth floor but then kept going. when it reached my floor, the door opened a little bit and got stuck. >> the tragedy here something state senator and assemblymen keith wright can't ignore, it would ensure elevators across the state get properly maintains and workers who service them get more training and correct licensing while the incident on the lower east side is still under investigation, people who live in the complex want something to change.

60 we'll be very close to it we'll tie break records, newark, la guardia. we'll see records on sunday but remember sunday soggy. clouds filling in right now, a little bit of icing here with elevation through west virginia, most of this moisture misses us that's why it's not a big rain event. the concern, early tomorrow morning is we could see icing sleet with elevation or freezing rain, so watch out for that. winter weather advisory, north and west and then relatively quiet saturday, but sunday, that's when we see that heavy rain sunday morning through midday then it wraps up into the afternoon. 1 to over 2 inches of rain possible then 20 degrees colder by monday and it is actually cool enough for a little bit of wednesday. so you go from almost 60 on sunday to some snowflakes in the 20s by tuesday night into wednesday.
