right now there is comic con for comic fans. what about fans of broadway? now there's actually broadway con. for the first time ever next weekend an entire convention will be dedicated to broadway and theater lovers. one of its creators is here now to tell us all about it. melissa, welcome. thanks for being here. >> thanks for having me. >> how did you come up with this? how did it turn into a reality? >> my company has been working on conventions for a few years now. harry potter ones, geeky related ones. my partner said to me has there ever been a broadway convention. at that moment -- >> bing. >> well, this has to happen. would you like to work with this on us and he said whatever you need and now we're here. partner. they've been fantastic. it's six days away. >> tell us about it. what can people expect when

>> i like to think of it as a wonderland of content and community. if you're a fan and you have four or five things to do at once that you can't choose between. there are people you can meet. you go to performances. you get an autograph. we try to make sure that it is very fan focused and make sure that all of our attendees -- the fun that they're having always comes first. >> is it just for fans or is this an outlet for people who want to break into the business as well? >> it's a little bit of both. mostly you should be a fan. most people who go into the business are fans of broadway. >> what are some of the workshops? >> we have master talents. somebody who is going to learn how to riff a song. great youtube tutorials. she's going to do one live. we have panels about the industry. performances live. a lot of the costs are camming. hamilton, king and i, fiddler on the roof.

>> of course there's some time to shop. what can people expect on that front? >> we have a full market place. there'll be a lot of exhibitions. it's a really vibrant atmosphere. >> how long does it last? >> it's at the hilton midtown. tickets are -- full weekend tickets are sold out but day passes are still available. go to broadwaycon.com and get them there. january 22nd through january 24th. almost 13 hours a day of programming. >> i know some of the proceeds are going to a charity. tell us about that. >> at least 10% will be going to broadway cares equity fights aids. they have been fantastic partners and helpers to us. >> thank you so much for being here today. there are still tickets left if you are interested many going to broadway con for more information you can head to our website, cbsnew york.com.

let's show you what the radar looks like. here we go. lots of green. heaviest stuff falling east of the city earlier. now it's moving through northern central new jersey. as you look well north of the city up toward sullivan. we have wintery precipitation falling. snow, sleet, possibly freezing rain. just be cautious out there driving on the streets this morning. winter weather advisory is in effect until 10:00 a.m. but personally i would extend that to sullivan, maybe even into orange as well. as we look to the tristate area. temperatures, 43 in the city. 44 in montauk. normal high is 38. we'll be climbing to 49. 9:00 a.m., 43 degrees. most of the rain is out of here. noon, 47. still mainly cloudy. a few breaks of sun possible. by 3:00 this afternoon with a high of 49 degrees we'll see a little bit of sun. we could also see passing showers throughout the afternoon. i think most of the day will

very soggy start to your saturday. i'll have your full forecast coming up. we'll talk much colder air driving back in for the workweek. andrea and diane, back to you. >> thank you. presidential candidate ted cruz is offering somewhat of an apology to new yorkers after his controversial comments about new york values. >> meanwhile mayor de blasio and governor cuomo are joining portions in firing back at the texas senator. don champion has more on the story from times square. don. >> good morning. in an op ed the governor and mayor called cruz's comments about new york a low blow. cruz seems to not be backing down from the comments which are meant to be an attack on donald trump. political frenemies bill de blasio and andrew cuomo are united in tear attack of ted cruz.

cruz's criticism of so-cthe white house. it cruz has gotten nearly half a million dollars of donations from new yorkers. some voters think the fuss is all about nothing. >> of course new york is mostly democrat; right? democrats have mostly liberal values; right? that's just the way it is. it's not a good or a bad statement. >> reporter: cruz is using this fight as a moment to raise money. yesterday his caaign sent out a mass e-mail to new york supporters saying the attacks on cruz are unfair. the of the suspects. around 3:30 yesterday afternoon they entered a beth page credit union and passed a note to a teller demanding money. once they received the

cash investigators say they took off. no one was hurt. police in queens are also searching for a man and woman who held up a td bank on thursday. investigators say they walked in wearing all black, pointed their guns and ordered everyone to the ground. then handed a bag to the teller demanding money. they got away with $2000 and two red dye packs. a bag with the exploded packs was found at a nearby street. no word that robbery is connected to the one we just told you about on long island. new jersey firefighters made a daring rescue on a frozen lake. spoke with the heroes who put thundershower lives on the line to save a drowning puppy. >> a harrowing scene. a german shepherd puppy six months old falling through a hole in the ice into the frigid waters. rescuers from the volunteer fire department crawling out on to the lake on their knees to try to save him. >> let him get him out. >> west millford firefighters

>> the dog was drowning in the ice. he went under the ice, actually, a couple times. >> police say the dog got out of its owners dog next door and into a world of trouble and danger and saving him will not be easy. deputy chief dressed in a cold water survival suit goes into the freezing waters as the ice below him cracks while trying to bring the puppy out. but the dog is frightened and resists. actually biting the rescuers and then swimming away. >> he wasn't happy to see us, unfortunately. he was frightened and scared and decided to bite us a lot. >> reporter: the challenge now is not only getting the fog out but getting him out before hypothermia sets in. >> use the sled. put it in front of him. >> reporter: finally after six minutes -- >> come on, he's coming. there we go. >> the puppy is brought to safety. firefighters tell us cold but okay. the rescuers all safe as well. >> we were quick.

saved the pup. he's doing good. >> i was so scared. >> a heart felt thank you from the dog's owner yolanda ortiz to the men who saved her pup from a frozen fate. >> scott, thank you. another tale of heroism. a bergen county crossing guard saved a mother and her daughter. charlie lee has been helping people cross the street for 15 years. he's posted every school day at the intersection of broad avenue and fort lee road. last week jamie says stop. >> he literally stopped and jumped in front of the car and made them stop. i couldn't believe he just would do that. the car could have hit him. >> lee has put his life on the line before. leonia police say last may a driver hit lee while he was on the job. he went to the hospital but

about a quartlans. it is going to be a mild day. we'll be pushing 50 and then tomorrow the colder half of your weekend with highs for most of us in the 30s. now we are seeing mainly rain this morning. but tomorrow into monday we're looking at passing snow showers possible. so that will be pretty to see. bitter air is on the way for monday and tuesday. we're talking feels like temperatures in the teens monday and tuesday. this morning, however, very mild out there. most of us in the 40s. we do have a wind advisory for the east end of long island in effect till 10:00 a.m.
