good morning after what was nearly the biggest snow storm on record missing it by just a tenth of an inch it's now time to dig out. >> many are ready to hit the road after a travel ban kept the streets clear. it's supposed to be lifted about an hour from now. >> and the blizzard's power if you mean winds combined with the full moon created big waves on the jersey shore and long island.
6:01 am
i'm diane macedo. >> i'm andrea grymes. new york city is under a travel ban until 7 this morning when all port authority bridges and tunnels will reopen. >> buses are expected to be running by 7:00 a.m. as well and above ground subway service is expected early this morning along with metro north long island railroad and new jersey transit. >> we are live with team coverage from long island to westchester county to the jersey shore. >> john elliot is here in the studio tracking it all for us. >> were you frozen out there yesterday? >> yes we just thawed out. >> that was great work. you did the right thing. all morning i'm on the phone saying there an official announcement coming up at 7:00 a.m. but right now we missed it by that much.
6:02 am
was a record smasher those stats in a second. but right now i'll let you know that low is done and we are going to see the sun take over but totals for you, 30.5. 30.5-inches at jfk. hello record book. laguardia 27.9, belmont same, brooklyn at 27, central park 26.8 which missed the number one spot by .1. it's just crazy. white house 29.6, newark 28, elizabeth 27.9. and my house it's actually two aleves and an advil which i'm looking forward to later today. want to caution you it's cold out there. you do have to layer up. it's very slippery. 22 with the wind it feels even
6:03 am
you get ready and pace yourself. stretch. it's a heavy dense snow closer to the coast other important reminders before you go coming up in just a bit. right now i'll send it back to the thawed out diane and anderson. >> if i knew they needed a tenth of an inch i'll try to blow it your way. next time. now that the snow has stopped falling it's time to dig out. >> for a lot of people on staten island it's not going to be an easy task. alice is checking out the roads for us this morning. good morning. >> hey good morning. the roads here on staten island aren't too bad. we are on victory boulevard turning on marks street where mobile 2 was at 11:00 p.m. want to show you that video because residents were calling to complain taking to social media saying the plows had not
6:04 am
i know dave carlin had a hard time driving through. residents here in staten island have felt as though they are the forgotten burrough when it comes to snow storms. they complain saying the plows don't get to them at all it seems. the mayor was here touring the area making sure everything was going as planned. he said to be patient with the plows. give them at least 24 hours and if you come back to us now here on marks street once again and the plows have come through. not the best job. again the main roads in staten island are fine. we saw numerous plows this morning going back and north but it's--forth but it's the secondary roads. i'm going to stop because i want my photographer to pan over to the right side. this is walters avenue. it looks unplowed. maybe a plow went through once
6:05 am
hasn't been here in hours. a gentleman trying to walk through right now. maybe we'll try to catch up with him in a bit. we are going to start moving again on marks street. people are going to be digging out. the travel ban is lifted around 7:00 a.m. people want to get on with their sunday and get themselves prepared for the work week and there's a huge dig out ahead of them and it's not going to do them a favor if the street they live on isn't plowed at all. we will keep you updated. andrea and diane i'll send it back to you. >> thank you alice. slick roads made for dangerous driving conditions and that's why there was a travel ban. >> a driver lost control of his car. the car slammed into three parked cars. the driver did get out, looked at the damage and drove away. luckily no one was hurt. the jersey shore is dealing with a lot of snow and water
6:06 am
>> meg baker is where flooding has been a major concern. meg how is it looking out there? >> andie and diane we don't have as wild as a scene as yesterday morning. the winds died down. the water still pretty high. morning. scene. high tides powered by the full moon you see over my shoulder. oem had water rescue guys going door-to-door checking because there was water that was up to their knee with chunks of ice flowing all over here. next to these houses that not all of them were raised up so that's why they were going door- to-door to make sure everyone was okay on first avenue, fourth avenue and now here at the inlet we can see this is low tide right now. it's pretty dark out here but the water is just coming over the bulk head.
6:07 am
yesterday which is a good thing. further over towards the beach if we can see, walk with me a little bit. there's not only snow drifts but drifts created by the sand. that wind yesterday was intent. we felt it and we could barely see it on the beach because it was quite dangerous. the wind blew off the three foot berm that was here and ended up over here creating large snow drifts. we'll walk over there later on and show you that area but that three foot berm held up pretty well. i walked up and could see where the waves were crashing just hitting it but it did it's job. the mayor said that was created by the army corps of engineers to hold up to a 100 year storm or one like we had over the weekend. >> at least good news in terms of the berm.
6:08 am
there were flooding fears in long island as well. >> jennifer is in free port. >> good morning. i'm on the south shore. the next high tide 8:24:00 a.m. we are standing along the canal the matt capital mile so heavily damaged in sandy. boats were floating down main street, restaurants were ravaged. this time around white out conditions across the water, gusts of 55 at a time. 3-inches of snow falling per hour. still p pseg said very scattered outages and the mayor of freeport reported that the newly built sea wall held. that was all very good news. one neighborhood across the way did report six inches or so of tidal search but that quickly receded. cars were moved to higher ground. businesses here completely shut down.
6:09 am
showing you the party boats and the fishing trollers. they did remain in the bay because the coast guard reported 18-foot swells off shore. we visited the office of emergency management where initial reports car accidents, 74 in nassau, 62 in sussex. the numbers would have been a lot higher if the roads hadn't been closed. we also talked with the health manager about the dangers of snow shoveling. >> they should be very careful when they clean snow off their walks and it's a rigorous activity. if somebody were to start an exercise program they wouldn't begin by running a marathon and it's the same thing for someone who is not active shoveling snow which is very heavy and requires a lot of work.
6:10 am
among other calls a man fell off a ladder clearing snow from his house in sussex and a woman in nassau county suffered a snow blower injury. we have a lot to be grateful for. no one was paralyzed on the long island express way for days or for hours because they were shut down. preplanning helped. here in freeport they are hoping when the sun comes up to get all of themselves dug out and hopefully dodge this next high tide at 8:24:00 a.m. we are live in freeport jennifer mclogan cbs 2 news. >> many people lost power during the storm. crews are working around the clock to try to restore it. >> at last report jersey
6:11 am
customers, 125 customers the dark. pse and g has 19 and con ed has 7. new york governor will speak at 9:45. new jersey governor set to make comments at 10 and new york city mayor will speak at 11. the tristate area airports are trying to resume normal service. kennedy has 54% of the departing flights canceled. laguardia 75% of flights are canceled today. newark liberty right now at 64%. >> we will have more eye on the storm coverage in just a moment when we return. we'll head out to queens where flooding is also a problem there.
6:12 am
in new york state, we believe tomorrow starts today. all across the state the economy is growing, with creative new business incentives, and the lowest taxes in decades, attracting the talent and companies of tomorrow. like in the hudson valley, with world class biotech. and on long island, where great universities are creating next generation technologies. let us help grow your company's tomorrow, today
6:13 am
welcome back to our eye on the storm coverage this morning taking a live look from mobile 2 in castle ton corners on staten island. 22 degrees. we have about 45 minutes before the travel ban in long island and new york city is lifted. right now after the snow of course comes the big clean up. >> vanessa murdock joins us live with more on the conditions there. vanessa? >> big might be an under statement ladies. i think it might be considered mammoth in this case. take a look at this car completely plowed in and this is a mini-van so at least three feet deep of heavy compacted snow thanks to plows but they did not make it all the way down this road.
6:14 am
i'd like to show you this--you is this, the plow has completely stopped here and there's about 3 feet of snow. a gentleman took three hours to completely dig out his car. >> i like it. i like it the first day. i have to go to work though. >> how long have you been out here. >> i've been out here about 40 minutes right now. >> what's the end goal? >> the goal is to clear my driveway so that i can get out to go to work on monday morning. >> how long do you think it's going to take for you to clear it. >> it's going to take all day and when i shovel it out the sanitation will just push it right back up when they come with the plow. >> okay. so you get the scene. this is a starting point of
6:15 am
two feet. laguardia set a new single day snow fall record, the previous record just over 23-inches in one day over 27-inches fell. here's the deal. it snowed for 27 hours straight and total snow fall at laguardia 27.9-inches. it's not just that of course but now with the plows coming through there are well over two feet of snow that people will be dig digging themselves out of today and for some they do expect it to take all day to get out of this mess. certainly quite the punishment for those who have to make it to work toward--accomplishment for those who have to make it to work tomorrow. think about that gentleman who spent two hours. that is how long it will take but from the front door to the car it will take longer than that. vanessa murdock, back to you ladies. >> that's a good employee. >> i hope his boss is watching.
6:16 am
vanessa thank you. the ban on cars in other cities and down state roadways will be lifted at 7 this morning. >> but while it is in place pedestrians have had the city streets to themselves and that made for unusual scenes. people spreading into the sidewalks into the streets. some found some cross country skis were the best way to move through the snowy city. >> and those on the upper east side were also using streets like here at lexing ton avenue and 86th street. when i came in around 12: 30 last night there were people in the middle of the street. it's cool. >> it was fun. when we were on our way back i saw a lot of people on 9th avenue and all of these dogs were running and playing in the streets. not something you usually see. >> it got off from john over there. >> i love the dog reference. >> we know. >> it was safer to walk in the
6:17 am
were not cleared and you were like trying to get overall of this stuff. >> hopefully in saddle shoes. >> absolutely. that's the best way. let's review common sense stuff. please watch your step right outside the door at in the city or at home. very slippery and night after night it's a problem tory freeze. then stretch, drink water, don't have a heart attack. this is heavy snow and before you get working on the car really focus on the tailpipe first because you don't want the carbon monoxide backing up into the cabin so you have to be smart. in the city right now it's surreal, erie and empty and void of cars so you can look up the broad avenues and the lights twinkle and that's about it. that will change soon and the friction of the wheels will help a bit. clear and 22 right now, wind out of the north at 12. big shift in the wind.
6:18 am
some single digit readings out there. chatham at 18, 19 in stanford, 25 in river head. these numbers compared to yesterday, justice the number from two to 15 degrees colder. winds not as much. still 17 miles per hour gusts in the city. holding onto that wind out of the north for long island so winds have subsided so no winds being reported north and west and still some below zero many single digits so that air temperature overall of that snow pack is going to be an icy mess so you do have to be mindful of where you step. we are stepping in in the city. 26.8-inches of snow. so now let's have some fun with that. last year we had 2.7 at this time. this year we are a little bit above that. normally at this time in the calendar you'd expect to have about 10-inches of snow.
6:19 am
the average snow fall for the entire season. so absolutely. yeah we made up for it just like that. this is what we were talking about the north wind more pronounced for nassau and sussex county. not much of a breeze but cold north and west. show you what's going on right now. it is very quiet. we are waiting for an ice lated shower on--isolated shower on tuesday but it will be warm enough for rain. until then make sure you are ready for it. today chilly and bright. watch for glare and monday a chance of rain back on tuesday above normal temperatures the rest of the week. we'll be here all week long. we'll have more snow coverage
6:21 am
city's normal snow fall for the entire season. sherry greg is in philadelphia with the look at the storm's after math. good morning. >> good morning andrea and diane. yes it was very exciting yesterday to have all that snow fall. people sledded in the afternoon. but now it's just a mess left. okay? take a look i'm in south philadelphia. if you don't know where this is thank rocky. this is the streets he ran down when he was training for his biggest fights and as you can see we have piles and piles of snow. you have to shovel a three foot space in front of your home and now we have the plows coming through which means the cars sides. you can see here that this is like a three foot mound of snow that people have to dig out of be doing. they'll be out here but you
6:22 am
you got these huge piles of snow being put in different places. this is a parking lot. there's a bulldozer at the end of the street. they are scooping it up and dumping it at the end of the streets so this is what we'll be doing on our sunday morning. i wonder what you'll be doing in new york. live in philadelphia back to you andrea and diane. >> we'll be doing a lot of the same things. >> everybody will be sherry thank you. >> we are in good company. more on this from eye on the storm coverage in just a minute. hash tag blizzard 2016 is trending. >> we'll take a look at some of the fun photos you posted.
6:23 am
6:24 am
>> lots of great stuff being posted to facebook.com/cbs new york. i'm not sure if the bride worry snow boots but she looked fabulous. kissing couple is mike and courtney married yesterday at st. joseph church in hillsborough new jersey which got two feet of snow from the storm. bravo to the wedding party and thanks to courtney's cousin hall for posting the pictures. >> i bet this got beautiful ones from the photographer. >> love the fur too. >> lots of unimaginable snow totals like this one from thomas in new jersey and this is stacy in long beach, new york but patty williams is rubbing is in with this picture not even a flake in her dutchess county back yard. do we have a final photo?
6:25 am
but keeping them in suspense. >> absolutely. facebook.com/cbs new york. twitter@cbs new york. >> share your photos we love to see them and chat about them. now i'm curious to see what the last one was. that's what we call a tease. >> the man the myth the legend, lou young. >> he was historical yesterday. tony thank you. we'll have more eye on the storm team coverage in just a moment.
6:26 am
6:27 am
buses pulled off the streets and train service brought to a halt. all of this is expected to resume. >> our cameras were rolling as a river of ice passed right by our crew. >> and what about the state of the roads in new jersey. a live interview with the state department of transportation coming up. good morning i'm andrea grymes. >> i'm diane macedo. live team coverage from long island to westchester county to the jersey shore. >> but first we begin with john elliot with the latest on the after math of the blizzard. >> good news weather wise it's done. it's out of here. winds are subsiding, sun is going to shine so that's the good news. so many facets to the storm. do watch out. it's slippery out there. it will ice over. not only is that happening right now but will again
6:28 am
morning so be mindful of that. let's help you get out the door in the city. right out the door it's sloppy. 22 clearing skies winds out of the north at 12. air temperature readings closer to five to ten and so with the wind we have a lot of single digit wind chills so layer up or get ski goggles. everybody had those yesterday. what's that about. clearing skies is going to be the trend today. you see the exiting low is leaving out of here. winds subside and the skies will brighten. so as it stands right now we are number two our storm at 26.8-inches but this is what you are dealing with in grant city 26-inches yonkers over 20, stoney point 17 and votes burg 16. it's going to be a big job today. pace yourself and we'll get through this together.
6:29 am
>> john thank you. staten island was hit hard yesterday. >> and the streets are covered in snow water and ice some worse than others. alice is driving around in mobile 2 very carefully checking out the roads for us this morning. looks like you are stopped there alice. >> parked momentarily. i want to show you this huge snow pile. this is what people are waking up to this morning on marks street in front of someone's house. the snow has got to go somewhere. we've seen them taking it out of here but a lot of these piles are in front of people's homes. let's get moving here. we again are on marks street. mobile 2 around 11:00 p.m. last night. residents were really upset because it hadn't been plowed. staten island feels like the forgotten bureau because they say the plows get to them so late. this morning the plows made their way through but some of the side streets do look a bit untouched like walters avenue here to my right.
6:30 am
to pan the camry we showed you- -the camera. we showed you this in the last half hour. we haven't seen anyone coming out of their homes but there's work for them when they do wake up. all of the cars on the street are buried in the snow. the plows look like they made maybe one or two passes through here but it's pretty bad further along the stretch of road here in the castleton corner of staten island. we've been here since just before 4:00 a.m. and there have been a lot of plows out going back and forth on the main roads. this is a secondary side road and really nasty to navigate through. i can't imagine if you have a smaller car getting through because we have a heavy duty vehicle here and we are having trouble taking this turn here but we are going to be out and about on the roads here on staten island this morning. tweet me, message facebook if
6:31 am
but for the most part the roads are looking pretty good. andrea and diane we'll send it back to you in the studio. >> i'm glad you have four wheel drive. >> to say the least. >> let's get a look at westchester. >> ilana gold is live for us. good morning. >> good morning. we are covered in almost two feet of snow standing just off of yonkers avenue and here's an example of how much snow there is. these piles of snow go well past my knee. pretty incredible. definitely impossible to walk in this and people here are going to be waking up to a huge mess. check out these cars buried in snow. pretty incredible to see this. they definitely have their work cut out for them trying to dig out today. as far as the roads they are not too bad. they are plowed and passible but there are problems on the side streets. some of them are pretty tricky.
6:32 am
we shot earlier this morning on broadway giving you an example of the issues drivers are having especially on the hills. there are plenty of those here. we caught up with a driver after he hit a patch of ice and slammed into a snow bank, damage on his car. it took him more than an hour to get out of that mess. he was visiting his mother at the hospital and heading back home to albany when this happened. here's what he has to say. >> describe the roads for us? >> the roads are snowy, slippery, wet, icy, especially the black ice. >> and you found out first hand. >> yes. >> how are you doing? i see you got into a crash here. >> as you can see my car is not really that damaged. hoping it will still go. >> you slid into a snow bank. >> yes. >> how are you doing? okay? >> yes. >> what is the advice for people hitting the roads possibly today. >> make sure you have snow tires and use extreme caution. go really slow going down hill.
6:33 am
today if you are heading out. the roads are slick. it's also fairly icy on the sidewalks so if you are heading out this morning make sure to take it slow. we are live in yonkers ilana gold cbs 2 news. >> ilana thank you. the travel ban will be lifted in less than 30 minutes. the nypd was endorsing the roads yesterday when they became really dangerous. officers stopped drivers who were violating the ban risking fines or even arrests but they didn't want to lock people up they wanted everybody to just obey the travel ban. >> stay off the roads but before they did get on the road many drivers will first have to dig out or shovel at least and the big snow clean up will get under way as people are waking up. >> vanessa murdock is live from queens where there's a big job ahead of them. good morning vanessa. >> a massive clean up will
6:34 am
we've seen some people out already digging out. we are here in a more retail section of white stone queens this morning. it's been very peaceful out here. it is pretty. but we know it is not going to be pleasant later on as people come out to clean up. take a look again this is the retail section. somebody did come by and shovel earlier but so much snow left to be shoveled and they are coming off of a single day record at laguardia airport for greatest snow fall in total for this event at laguardia 27.9- inches at jfk they got over 30- inches there so incredible totals across the region so yes a monumental task to dig out but plenty of people out and about this morning, many especiallily visiting this little local gem if you will. it's called cherry valley and getting there may not be easy but many people are coming out this morning to do it.
6:35 am
i'm going to speak with a gentleman named george who told me he's a great person to talk to so let's see if he'll come out. i said stay inside. >> hello. >> how are you hanging in there? >> we are hanging in pretty well. we are probably the only store open for blocks. >> did you guys stay open for the entirety of the storm? >> yes we stayed open. in fact only one storm in history has closed us and that was sandy a couple years back but we are going strong tonight. >> how was the business flow yesterday? >> a little slower than usual but we still had a lot of people come in so it was pretty normal. >> did you stay entertained yourself? did you shovel the snow? you have huge mounds here. >> we did a lot of shoveling last night but we found plenty of time for fun. [laughter] >> i'm glad to hear it. seeing all the snow you set a single day record in queens for snow fall. >> did we? wow. >> how does that feel? >> first time hearing that.
6:36 am
it was a fun day before work and during and i'm sure after. it's been just great so far. >> awesome. they have plenty of shoveling to do but people can quickly get in and out of the store right? >> that's our number one priority. >> thank you so much george. >> thank you have a great morning. >> you too. it's a beautiful morning in queens, a very vereen morning and lots of digging out to be done. ladies back to you. >> he needs a scarf or something. >> he does. good thing he went back inside. >> vanessa thank you. flooding is a major concern in the jersey shore area, roads were shut down and huge chunks of ice have been flooding the streets. many towns are rebuilding after the damage done by superstorm sandy. further south new jersey residents faced flooding during high tide. >> kevin israel good morning thank you for your time. let me ask you what is the current situation right notch
6:37 am
specifically on the jersey shore. >> good morning. most of the state was lucky enough the storm stopped overnight and our crews have been out all night working and the roads are mostly passible. obviously the coast experienced significant flooding and the waters are still receding. we have some roads closed in the southern portions of the state in the cape may county area but we think everybody is going to come out of this pretty well. >> kevin it seems like the flooding is the biggest concern but of course there was a lot of snow that came with this storm. how are we looking in terms of that? >> we are looking good at this point. like i said, the snow stopped late last night and our crews have been working non stop since then because there wasn't a lot of traffic on the road they were able to do their work quickly and efficiently and most of the roads in new jersey
6:38 am
there is still wind which is blowing around snow on the roads. so we'll continue to have to work and might create visibility issues so we are asking drivers who have to be on the roads be careful and plan trips accordingly and know with the changes of temperatures it goes up and down through the day and can create icy conditions. >> that's what i was going to ask you kevin your advice for drivers so they are allowed to be on the roads in new jersey if they have to be. >> yes drivers can get around. just do so carefully. conditions can change in an instant and we just ask you to stay back from our crews when you see them working. let the plows make the roads safer for you and they need to get the job done. >> in terms of the flooding how do you get all of that water out and are you worried as the snow melts it will add to that? >> well on the coastal areas they didn't receive as much snow so that shouldn't be as much of an issue. it's a matter of waiting for the tides to recede and the

subway system but on d.c. roadways high winds caused blinding white out conditions. a pair of pick ups linked together to tow a ladder truck out of a jam. crews couldn't clear the roads effecting the 911 response times. >> our interest is in our public safety being able to move our first responders and getting the city back open. >> cbs 2 don champion is covering the storm's impact there in washington and we'll have a live report in the next half hour. >> the blizzard hasn't been all bad. take a look at tntn one of the giant pandas. this looks fake but it's not at washington's national zoo. he had a blast after waking up to find all the snow sliding down a hill and even trying to make a snow angel. he's really enjoying it. >> i love that. if i had a snow suit yesterday i would have done the same thing. >> it looks fake. it looks like it's a person in there. >> he was very excited about the snow.
6:42 am
>> i have got to get a pet panda. >> your wife would love that. >> so would chloe. >> i have a dog that looks like a panda. good morning diane and andrea and chloe if you are watching you are a smart dog. my dog is this tall. i had 30-inches of snow at my house. thankfully i was trap made the city last night. you know what, readings in the teens and 20s so it's cold. 8 in valley stream. david herman says the clean up just beginning. look at this back yard. it was the wind the drifting and massive snow from the heavans it's like a surreal sculpture delicate in nature but heavy in mass so watch out when you start shoveling and i want to check in with reliable kristy. she has 16 but it's chilly. listen to this comment. morning john. not even one flake. how about that.
6:43 am
ed sent that in. this is lynn brown's little pepper. that's adorable. and charlie's dog in the poconos is bummed because he didn't get much snow either. have fun with the kids out there. it's a much better day for them to be out sledding and enjoying. they need to take breaks and drink water but as you start the clean up pace yourself. it's really a very taxing--look at this. there's actually snow on my suit. do you see that? i just got an inch on my suit. 22 in the city right now with clearing skies. we have temperatures. these are air temperature readings not wind chills. some single digit wind chills so when you throw in the wind a lot of those readings are right around 3 to 10. so it's cold. you need to layer up definitely as you've got those colors to do outside and in fact this afternoon only 34 for a high and we are going to see numbers actually trend above normal later in the week but today
6:44 am
sun up 7:13, sunset at 5:03. from the sun to the moon the moon still playing a role in our environment and that's why we have a coastal flood warning until noon. it's that high tide cycle under way very soon for ocean, monmouth and middlesex county. there's an vesely for the south too. talking about the numbers into parts of westchester county. nassau staggering 29.6. nobody is playing golf today. 23-inches new hyde park 23 as well and even out all the way to iceland 25.9. a little more than that and bay shore 19-inches of snow. so definitely we are digging out. and then as soon as you get your driveway done a plow will come by and give you another two feet to clear out. it's cold. it's slippery.
6:45 am
tomorrow not too bad but we'll see numbers stay above normal we've got rain on the way on tuesday so the concern there is in drainage areas that have been compromised by the storm you could see issues with a little bit of ponding and the melting is going to continue as well. peak heat of the week likely on that tuesday with a high of 45 staying mild wednesday and thursday. so as far as events go no more this week other than the chance of a shower or two but people really need to take care. a lot of little injuries and accidents happen the day after the storm and my concern when they lift the travel ban it's going to be pandemonium because everybody is going to go so take it easy. >> absolutely and take it easy if you are going out to play. a lot of kids are heading out. good sleigh riding weather. >> snow balls too. >> maybe we'll have a snow ball fight of our own. thanks gone john. the blizzard couldn't stop
