scene at one of the busiest airports this morning. we're trying to make sense of the traffic mess at la guardia. >> after a nightmare commute if long island railroad is supposed to be back on track. we are live at one of the stations closed all day yesterday. >> we have reporters covering every angle. let's begin with john elliott up first with your forecast. >> good morning, chris and mary. some cruise ships are getting in today. they were delayed. weather cooperates today. just a hint of wet weather this afternoon. it's a milder morning by far. 39 in the city. in fact, we are holding onto some of these numbers. we should be in the low 40s. that's south wind at 6 miles per hour right now. i think over all more clouds today. expand the radar view and you see that front heading our way. as we thought this

just a little bit of mixing snow in up state new york and p.a. continue. 42 at lunchtime, 43 this afternoon, a little breeze but still well above freezing which is good news. good news from the weather man, how about the traffic gal? what's going on, alex? >> a slow commute on the rails metro rail is on our close to schedule. that's good news. pass service remains suspended through the morning rush today. that should help you navigate around. new jersey transit, if you are taking the glad stone bridge, it's scheduled to resume service this morning. today new jersey transit is offering full system. lirr currently service remains

long branch. they plan to resume system wide starts at 5:00. alternate side parking rules is suspended until monday. be safe, don't text and drive. residents in some neighborhoods in the queens were closing their patience because their streets were still not plowed. >> but this morning they're looking a lot better. alease finch is live with more on the situation there. >> reporter: chris, i have to tell you there's certainly mountains of snow here on the corner of 68th road and 80th. we've also seen as you've mentioned a number of plows. in one, one just came down this road just a couple of minutes ago. in so many areas were people were complaining they couldn't get down the street we are looking at streets that are doesn't mean that people haven't gotten plowed in. it's going to be a very different scene today than it was yesterday when people were

>> they're spinning their wheel and they're sick of it. vehicles stuck on 101st street and ozone park untouched by any city plow. >> horrendous. they haven't passed by to plow the streets. it's been already two days. it's horrible. >> it's ridiculous. this is the only street in queens that's like this. >> not exactly. sunday night our truck got street at 69th and 76th street. >> the mayor visited queens and heard firsthand from residents who feel the city left them out in the cold. >> help. don't forget us. >> wife >> life is not back to normal in so many areas in queens where people are buried under 2.5 feet of snow. the mayor said help is on the way but we have not seen any help. >> this is not your average storm. .2 inches more would have been the greatest snowfall

>> the mayor also said too many people are putting their cars back on to the street. >> you take 27 inches of snow off a bunch of cars and you will block a street. >> the mayor said he understands patience is running thin and it is. >> it's not getting done. it's aggravating. >> reporter: we are looking at this particular street that was just plowed down to the black top. there's tons of snow on this street like every other street across the tri-state area. it seems like residents frustrations were heard and people are definitely taking a here early this morning. we are live, alease finch, cbs 2 news. this morning la guardia airport is recovering from a night of chaos. thousands of passengers and drivers were stuck for hours. >> they were trying to get into the airport after flights resumes following the storm or leaving after their flights landed.

the airport with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: chris, this morning la guardia airport has finally cleared out take a look at the drop off area. just a few hours ago there was complete gridlock out here, cars couldn't move, they were stuck here for hours and a lot of people missed their flights because of this. >> chopper 2 flew over la guardia airport last night and captured the gridlock on the side streets leading in and out of the terminals along with the grand central parkway. hundreds of cars backed up for miles. pilot joe beardman. >> the traffic at la guardia is just a complete mess. it's a combination of traffic control from port authority and nypd. >> the problem started around 6:00 p.m. when many flights resumed following the weekend blizzard. passengers flooded the area trying to catch their planes. this with traffic made matters worse and people were

driving out of the airport was impact as well. hundreds waiting for rides at la guardia gave up and you can see them walking away from the terminals. some sitting in the mess recorded what they had to deal with. >> we've been stranded at la guardia for the last 4 hours. we dropped off raul at around 6:30 and it's now 10:21 and we still can't get out. he took off and landed already. he's home. >> a port authority spokesperson blamed the jam on a number of factors. congestion on the grand central parkway along with a car fire earlier in the day and a rush of passengers arriving and leaving storm-delayed flights. the nypd said la guardia and port authority wasn't prepared for the crowds and didn't plan ahead for traffic control. passengers just need assurance this won't happen again. >> so at this point it's unclear exactly why this happened. there's certainly a lot of finger pointing about the problems. we hope to have more answers later on today. >> that was something else.

-- taken off and landed and they really still at the airport. lirr trains are expected to be up and running this morning. >> andrea grymes is live this morning. >> reporter: good morning, chris and mary. the hempstead branch here included this stop at nassau boulevard is one stop expected to be up and running for the first time since the blizzard. that also inclouds the long beach, far rockaway, west hempstead and the atlantic branch from jamaica to atlantic terminal. the entire system should be open and running by the morning rush. >> long island railroad riders are gearing up today for what they hope will be a smoother commute. this was the scene last night at penn station as people crowded onto training capping off a touch day for travel for thousands.

10:00 because i had to get a ride to the subway. >> its took me 3 hours this morning. >> it took me 2 hours and 25 minutes for a normal 40 minute trip. >> thousands of lirr and state workers have cleared the tracks and made repairs to get the rest of the snow bound system back up and running for this morning. the railroads sustained what the governor called significant damage in the blizzard. 7 of 12 branches were said to be back by 5:00 a.m. yesterday but it scaled back expectations after switches froze every night. >> every e-mail i got said canceled, canceled, canceled. >> confusing. they said after 7:00 and then 7:30. >> thousands of people stood confuse in the morning trying to squeeze into delayed trains settled if station -- from stations where trains wither not running at all. >> governor cuomo admitted yesterday service could have gone smoother.

the lines and we knew there was going to be trouble on some of the lines. >> reporter: back out here live you can see snow on the tracks here but trains have not started running yet. a potentially good sign as one just whizzed past. trains are expected to be back up and running system wide for the long island railroad. andrea grymes, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. up to 2.5 feet of snow fell on long island over the weekend and many side roads are still not cleared. several homeowners in hicksville spent yesterday digging out. they said plows passed through and blocked driveways and intersections with snow. >> i've been here for 35 years and in 35 years this is the worse job. >> homeowners are shovelling and blowing snow into the street that's not allowed. schools in newark will be closed again today as the city

said the city is working around the clock to get the streets cleared. the state d.o.t plans to deploy crews to newark today to help clean up. in jersey city schools will have a 90 minute delayed opening. you can find other closings on our website, cbsnewyork.com/schoolclosings. a woman was found dead in her car, a victim of the blizzard. the 78-year-old woman was discovered in her snow covered cadillac in a burger king parking lot. on saturday night she decided not to drive home in the snow. her identity has not been released. the nypd said there are six possible storm-related deaths in the city where victims were shovelling snow or just finished shovelling. a 64-year-old woman was also found shovelling snow at her home on saturday. it's 11 minutes past the hour. let's get a check on the forecast today.

front of my house, there was only that much left. stay safe. in the city it just continue s. driving in this morning roads are dry in new jersey but in the city it's just the melting so it's all bet and slushy. make sure you have the boots again today. mild and 39. feels great. winds out of the south at 6 miles per hour. look at that, babylon it's 43. 36 in belmar, 25 in monticello. these numbers compared to yesterday, 9 degrees warmer in the city. look at that whooping climb from day-to-day for nassau and suffolk. hour by hour we'll start with some mild readings which is nice. do watch out because there's been some refreezing north and west. there's a lot of variety as far as temperatures. 42 around

it feels like 39 this afternoon even though the thermometer climbs into the low 40s and staying mild into the evening. scanning the skies, if you've got a big trip and you're taking off right now you might run into a little bit of mixed precipitation as this continues to push through. by the time it gets into our area it's rain and not a lot of it. models not that bullish on some moisture. this is what i'm talking about, that 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 hour you could see a little bit of mixed precipitation so watch out for some slippery spots. even though it's later it's still warm enough where it's rain so it's going to be slick. then we have a nice break wednesday afternoon, thursday as well. agreement between the models that that system on friday will stay to the south so we'll leave a chance in over night thursday into friday but it looks like that low will miss us and then into the weekend.

were hoping and praying that the lirr is back on some sort of normal schedule today as they start to get things back up and running. we are following every aspect of the commute this morning for your here on cbs 2 news this morning. also there are several school closings and delays across the tri-state area. a list of closures on our website, cbsnewyork.com/schoolclosings. new this morning, another random slashing in the city. >> surveillance video shows a man wanted for assaulting a 71-year-old woman aboard a d subway train monday night. he's seen falling. valerie castro talked to the victim in her brooklyn apartment. >> how many stitches did you wind up with? >> quite a few. that's okay. i'm okay. >> the 71-year-old woman didn't want to show her bandaged face but said the attack happened on her way to work just after 7:00 monday morning. >> i take that train every

>> had you seen him before? >> no, no, sweetie. >> what did he look like? >> it's somebody that i don't know. >> her attacker was sitting across from her. he slashed her as he walked off the street at the bleaker street stop in manhattan . >> i guess he had a small blade. >> police say after the attack the suspect jumped on a d train. >> there was a visible police presence in the area after the incident. this officer appeared to be looking for evidence down on the subway tracks. other riders say news of the attack is concerning. >> it could happen to anybody. >> the victim is con fident her attacker will soon face justice. >> i leave this problem to god because he's got to answer to god for everything that he's done. >> police say the suspect is about 18 years old and was last seen wearing red sneakers and black jeans. near broadway and

news. >> police released this sketch of the suspect. a police-involved shooting in the lower east side according to police at around 12:30. officers were called to 765 fdr drive for the report of a violent person armed with a knife. the 25 -year-old failed to drop the weapon and approached the officers. he was shot once in the torso and transported to the hospital and expected to survive. testimony continues today in the trial of nypd officer charged in the shooting death of a brooklyn man. peter liang is accused of firing his gun in east new york in 2014. the bullet ricochetted off a wall and struck a man killing him. they called 911.

loose head either. i jacked my neck up and can barely move it. let's take a look outside and show you what's going on in the city right now. the good news clouds over head but 39. where's the rain? there's a hint of rain north and west. it will be this afternoon before we see a shower here and there. it's part of a pretty organized system but that thing is going to clear it and then we see some showers again tonight. it's going to be warmer so you'll deal with liquid precipitation. this is nice. it's a nice warm up for our neighbors to the south that saw all that rain. they're going to be dealing with melting issues. cold air still pooling around the lakes. we have a nice mild day today and tomorrow. in fact, 43 this afternoon in the city. nice above normal temperatures. even warmer for parts of long island.

mid to upper 40s so that's nice to you. you weren't spared when we saw those big totals through nassau and suffolk as well. nice news is we'll hang on to the heat tomorrow and then it's back to number as little bit below normal for your thursday into friday. it does look like that system thursday night into friday should miss us and stay well to the south. if you're going to head south or north or east or west i know the one who is the best at getting you there. >> all directions covered for you. in you're traveling this morning on the roads a live look at the garden state parkway at exit 135. you're moving well but there's a speed restriction. 50 miles per hour between exits 105 and the rareden tolls and tolls. the hudson river crossing, the george washington bridge lower low open until 6:00. in jersey city that covered roadway closed between tunly and jersey avenue due to construction.

buzzing taxi cabs and having close encounters with snowplows finally someone caught up with him. listen to what the police officer says. >> yes, officer? >> someone is complaininging about you. >> the officers let them off the hook. we asked the nypd if the cops did the right thing. in a statement they said, police officer haves the authority to authorize discretion or take enforcement or any violations. >> we showed the tape to people walking the streets. >> what did you think of that? >> it wasn't the safest thing to do. >> i'm all for obeying an honoring the law but i wish i was able to do it. >> we asked the mayor about the tape. he didn't like what he heard. >> that does not sound like a particularly safe thing from my point of view. i think the nypd has done a great job being out here making sure that people are safe. i would urge people to not go on a joyride that could
