friday morning in jackson heights queens. he's haminton corella. they traced him to a local gym. >> are people feeling relieved? >> yes. >> reporter: cameras targeted the suspect mothering to a girl. the video alarming for participants in the neighborhood. >> how has this affected people? >> people are really worried. people are scared. >> the little girl screamed and ran for help. she ended up at 81st and 37th. she found a crossing guard who stepped in and confronted the luring suspected who took off immediately. police plastered these wanted posters across the area showing his picture and warning families to be on high alert. >> my granddaughter go to that school. >> this has to be scary for you. >> that's right. >> the community is just thankful detectives tracked

they are still shaken over the accusations. >> never happen before in this neighborhood. now we worry. >> reporter: there's no indication that corella might have targeted other kids in that neighborhood. he's charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child. >> thank you. police say they are on the hunt for a hit and run driver who left a woman badly injured in brooklyn. the woman had been trying to hail a cab when she was sideswiped by a gray bmw. it happened just after midnight. police say the victim is in critical condition. now to campaign 2016. it is two days until the iowa caucuses. the candidates are in full court press mode. >> live from des moines with more. very exciting time to be there.

the road to the white house is fast approaching. we will soon be upon the very first contest on that path and candidates are criss crossing iowa, campaigning and criticizing. just days before the iowa caucuses, republican presidential candidates saved their sharpest jabs for hillary clinton. this after revelations the private home server she used while serving as secretary of state contained close to two dozen top secret e-mails. >> material is classified top secret because revealing it could pose airgraph threat to the national security of this country. >> anyone who lies to the families of the victims benghazi can never be commander in chief. >> top secret is one of the highest levels of classification. reserved for material that if released would cause grave damage to the national security. clinton's camp described the

bernie sanders who is trailing closely behind her in the polls brushed off the issue. despite being the oldest contender in the race, bernie sanders is drawing much of his support from millennials in iowa and across the country who make up nearly a third of voters. a sanders supporter will vote during monday night's caucuses. he attended a what's a caucus event at drake university where students simulated the political frenzy of the caucus experience. >> i've got ton see a lot of candidates talk. i aren't really got -- [ inaudible ] -- >> in a process that takes several hours, caucus goers on both sides will take to schools, gyms and other locations to choose a candidate. and i'll be here at the iowa caucuses media center. more than 1600 reporters and

will be staked out right here. passengers to vancouver got quite the scare. air canada flight 549 was force toddy vet to toronto. a passenger posted this picture of the oxygen masks coming down. the pilot had to descend from 36,000 feet to 10,000 feet. the passenger credited the crew for doing a great job in the emergency and the plane landed safely. the family of a former new york city teacher murdered at a manhattan homeless shelter is calling for change. both the victim and the suspects struggled with mental illness. >> go where your passions take you and you will wind up some place you never expected. >> that's former teacher deven black speaking to new york city students in 2012 in a video on youtube. no one there ever expected him to wind up murdered in this east harlem homeless shelter. >> my father was in a homeless shelter because he struggled with mental illness. >> jonas black seen here with

needs to be taken more seriously with treatment options expanded and improved. >> we need to make sure that the most vulnerable element of people in our society are protected and this was a tragedy that was entirely preventable. >> reporter: late wednesday night police say 22-year-old anthony white who also has a history of mental illness nearly decaptived deven black in the room they shared. resident jeffrey martin says the suspect thought his cell phone was stolen and had been threatening violence saying -- >> if y'all don't find my cell phone i'll kill somebody. >> reporter: while the victim's family mourns, security is being stepped up at this shelter and in others around the city in an effort to reduce violence among the homeless population. friday night officers from the department of homeless services were frisking residents and searching all rooms at the shelter where deven black had only stayed for three nights. some don't feel safe. >> anything can happen at any

security they have. >> reporter: former d had, s deputy commissioner says the nypd should do a security assessment at every city shelter. >> look and see how many cameras, surveillance cameras they should have, where they should be positioned, how many guards, where they should be stationed. >> reporter: and not leave it up to the civilians who do those jobs now. in east harlem. cbs 2 tried to ask about the nypd doing a security review at homeless shelters but we have not heard back. a staten island couple says they were targeted with a frightening hoax likely tied to social media. they called police after receiving a call from a man who knew details about their daughter and said he was holding her for ransom. turned out to be a virtual kidnapping, a hoax. the girl was safe at school. scammers make threats more realistic by gathering personal details from social media sites then they demand money for the victims release. the alleged victim, anyway.

by wednesday we're talking highs pushing 60. so of course the unseasonable warmth will continue. the big snow melt in a big way. as of this morning, here's a look at just how much snow has melted. in central park with the storm we got nearly 27 inches. now less than an inch left on the ground. jfk got over 30 inches now. 9-inches remains. as we go through the next five days or so the melt will continue. as we look at the vortex, satellite and radar. sunshine to the south of the city. you can see the clouds thickening from the west. they are moving from west to east. more clouds on the way for your midday forecast. maybe even a stray snow flake. well to our north, there are some snow showers. for us, it would just be a passing snow flake at best. general picture is this. high pressure will dominate your weekend forecast. some clouds through your midday hours. otherwise mainly clear skies through the overnight hours. tomorrow, going to be a day

for today, a seasonal chill. feeling like the mid30s. high pressure migrates off the coast. as that happens the winds switch. winds out of the southwest, we start to pump in milder air. tomorrow, upper 40s. then for monday, you see this cold front. it will move on in. bringing us a slight chance for showers. still warm on monday. many many of us into the low 50s. for today, 39 degrees. a mix of sunshine and clouds. overnight we'll fall into the 30s. below freezing again for some. so patchy black ice again possible tomorrow morning. but overnight, partly cloudy skies. tomorrow, 48 and partly sunny. warm up continues into monday. a high of 52. a chance for showers on monday. not looking significant. tuesday, 50 for groundhog day. i'm forecasting an early spring. we'll see what happens on tuesday. then for wednesday the warmest day of the next seven, 58 degrees. another chance for snow. >> will feel like spring on wednesday.

you're about to see that wasn't the worse of it. >> just happened so quick. very scary. >> a landing had just jumped out of the driver's seat. he pulled other southbound route 15 in sparta after realizing flames were coming from underneath. >> truck just came towards the police car. >> scattered as the truck barreled across several lanes of traffic. the officers trying to save their patrol cars right in the line of fire. here's another view from inside sergeant joseph pensato's car. he didn't even have time to get it in gear. just out of view, making a split second decision that saved his life. getting out of that patrol car with seconds to spare. then diving out of the way. >> somehow the truck just

went all the way to left lane. ended up against the guardrail. >> the sergeant has minor injuries and the vivid memory of how much worse it could have been. a long island heart attack survivor reunites with the police officer who saved her life. 72-year-old kathleen manganelo and arnold reyes gave each other an embrace yesterday. her heart stopped beating. reyes was carrying powerful new needles that deliver drugs directly to a person's heart. >> it goes right through the bone. right through into the marrow where we can introduce the medication and it circulates throughout the body. >> he just appeared at my door and he was there to save me. it's unbelievable. >> emts had tried cpr on her without success. >> love a happy ending. time now 9:22. the nets face off against a friendly foe and the knicks
