watch cbs2 news at 11:00 after stephen colbert. we have developments on that deadly crane collapse in tribeca. the cleanup and the investigation have made progress since we checked in with you yesterday. >> today the mayor is expected to announce safety improvements to crane operations, a day after crews found the crane's computer that could lead them to what went wrong. >> one of the victims is out of the hospital. cbs2's ilana gold is live from the scene. >> reporter: we've noticed big changes at the scene. it's hard to tell because this truck is blocking us now. crews did manage to remove that massive crane. it's gone from this intersection here at west broadway and worth street. the next step is to haul off the crushed cars and patch up the roads. crews have worked nonstop this weekend. they used blowtorches to dismantle this 565-foot long

then hauled them out on flat bed trucks. experts will study them to figure out what went wrong. they're looking into a number of potential causes. >> goes from a to z. we're going to talk about, look into the metal, possible metal fatigue, make sure the pins that are connecting pieces together. counter weight, any wind information possible. >> reporter: cell phone video captured the topple friday. it plummeted 56 stories in the middle of the morning rush. >> it was an onslaught. >> reporter: the christian operator is kevin reilly, he's been questioned and tested negative for all substances. the department of buildings is focused on the crane's computer. it records each movement and this could be key to finding answers. cbs2 has learned bay crane services the company that owns the crane has been cited four

it's something investigators wouldn't elaborate on. >> bay crane really consists of about a quarter of the cranes that operates in new york city. any of those violations could vary. >> reporter: the outcome of the collapse is alarming. david wichs was killed while walking to work at a wall street investment firm. 45-year-old dawn cojima was just released from the hospital. she was hurt while getting a cup of coffee. 73-year-old thomas o'brian got trapped in his crushed jeep. he's still in the hospital with a head injury. >> we walk past scaffolding every day and don't think to look up, and now it's something we have to be concerned about. >> reporter: here's a live look at the scene where the cleanup continues. lines. this afternoon the mayor will be out here and talk to us about his new plans to improve crane safety after this collapse. we're going to be hearing from him at 1:30, and of course let

we're live in tribeca, ilana gold, cbs2 news. >> thank you. funeral will be held for david wichs this morning at 11:00 on east 85th street. brook, new jersey. a new jersey man accused of driving over a curb and striking a police officer has been arrested. investigators say the dover officer was responding to a call about several people sleeping in a vehicle yesterday. when he arrived, police say the suspect drove onto the sidewalk and hit the officer. that officer is now recovering. a second person in the vehicle was charged with drug possession and throwing bodily fluid at an officer. police have arrested the man they say is behind a string of robberies and slashing on the subway. che quenten irving was taken into custody yesterday morning. police say he slashed a man on the hand last week after the victim refused to hand over his cell phone on the train.

a bright and beautiful, but chilly morning. 37 degrees. 8:10. thanks for waking up with us here on cbs2 sunday morning. to campaign 2016, republican presidential candidates went head to head last night. >> it was the first gop debate since senator ted cruz won the iowa caucuses. weijia jiang joins us live from manchester with details. >> reporter: good morning to you and good morning to everybody. this republican race will not only determine a nominee, but also the future of the party. front-runner donald trump continues to portray himself as the washington outsider. though he was not the one with the target on his back last night. candidates were challenging marco rubio's readiness to serve as president. an awkward start to saturday's republican debate. some of the candidates didn't realize they had been called to the stage. but once things got underway,

about their race, which is very tight coming out of iowa and also has become not just about the two of them, but the future of the democratic party. then we're going to switch over to football and talk to the executive director of the nfl players association and we'll have a preview with our own james brown. >> look at what you're saying how this could shape the landscape of the democratic party, polls showing bernie sanders could win new hampshire, if he does, how important is this to all of this? >> it's very important to his campaign. his campaign is a momentum campaign. he says, i know future states are supposed to be better for hillary clinton but i'm going to create a wave of enthusiasm. it's this theory behind his idea about governing, he's going to create a wave in the country that will force washington to change. he has to do not just well, but very well in order to kind of keep his argument going. new hampshire is a good state for him.

and then hope he can build a bridge to south carolina, which has a more conservative electorate, diverse electorate, all of which should favor hillary clinton. >> the gop debate last night, besides the awkward walkout in the beginning, what stuck out to you? >> the biggest event of the evening was the marco rubio's difficulty answering questions about his lack of experience. it was -- he basically gave the same answer multiple times. then he was called on it by chris christie for giving a canned answer. it's difficult, you have your worst moments in a debate where your performance underlies the real doubt about you, and the doubt is he doesn't have the experience to handle the crisis of a presidency and that moment encapsulated that. it's a phenomenon on social media. that's not great for a candidate these days and it's hard to fix. he can't get more experience

coast. let's look at the vortex satellite and radar picture. clear skies overhead. clouds moving in associated with an area of low pressure along the carolinas. it will make its way up the coast, the center passes us offshore, however we'll get grazed by the western edge. light snow especially south and east of the city starting tomorrow morning. as we look to system number two this is what will impact us monday night through tuesday, even lingering snow showers into wednesday. it's a clipper that will move southeast and linger offshore and then it will bring us more light snow. for today, nice finish thanks to high pressure being the dominant feature. as that low moves in the clouds thicken late today, overnight and tomorrow we're dealing with periods of snow. slick morning commute is possible for some. tuesday still a chance of that clipper system moving across, energy getting absorbed by the

tomorrow morning through the noon hour looks to be about a trace up to roughly an inch in suffolk county. this is just tomorrow morning. monday through wednesday this is what we foresee could be the accumulation totals by wednesday late. 3to 6 inches east and south of the city especially chose to the coast. remember, that system is offshore. we expect the heaviest totals along the coast. and a trace to 3 inches elsewhere. that includes the city points north and west. today, sunny start. 47 degrees, clouds. 47 is 7 degrees above normal. overnight the clouds will thicken. 34. late flakes moving in south and east of the city. tomorrow periods of snow. light snow especially east of the city and we'll top out at 38 degrees to start your week. winds breezy tomorrow out of the northeast at about 10 to 20. as we look at your extended forecast tuesday and wednesday,

we have mostly clear skies and 35. the winds are calm. what can you expect from the forecast? first off, nice finish to your weekend. later on today overnight the clouds will thicken and then we're bringing in chances for snow monday through wednesday. yes, there will be some accumulations. also the possibility of minor coastal flooding tonight through the day tomorrow during periods of high tide. here's why. we have clear skies now, an area of low pressure to the south will be making its way up the coast and strengthening. the center will pass offshore, but we will get basically clipped by the outer edge of this system. we are talking about the chances for light snow, periods of light snow, especially south and east tomorrow. could be slick spots for that morning commute if you're making your way in from long island or the jersey shore. off to the northwest, system number two bringing us a chance

running game can get going. the offensive line will have to keep him up tight. he can't escape the pocket like it will be a challenge. >> do you think this is the end for him? >> i think there's no question about. all indications are that. let's be honest, if the broncos don't want him back, and all indications are they want to turn the page and go towards brock osweiler, i don't think it would make sense to move on somewhere else. >> what are the strengths and weaknesses you see? >> for the broncos, it starts with their defense. they also have pretty good running game. that's going to obviously have to take a little bit of pressure off peyton manning. but to me, everything with the broncos starts and ends with that defense and getting that pressure on cam newton. >> the panthers, top ranked offense, what are some of their weaknesses do you think? a lot of people think they're going to take it all the way today. >> i think, again, with cam

focal point of that offense. they can run the ball, too. have a pretty good running game. to me, that broncos front seven will be a big factor in shutting down that running game. i think a big factor will be greg olsen, he's been a sneaky tight end during his career. the other guy is a former jet, i had a chance to cover him when he played for the jets. it would be great to see him at the end of his career end with a super bowl ring. both teams are loaded with story lines and great players. >> that video we were just looking at was greg olsen, a wayne, new jersey native. it's nice to see a player from our area to go on to great things. >> he was a first round draft pick out of university of miami. started with the bears and found a home with the panthers. you like to see him win with the jets or giants, but you'll

can make them to order. if you want to help me out with the cheese sauce. >> build your own? >> yeah. we're going to throw some butter in there. let that melt. we're going to start building nachos over here. a little bit of cheese sauce already made. you have this nice beautiful queso. it's the national close of texas -- cheese of texas. >> yes. >> we're doing a chili fest now. so we have three different chilis. we're going to top ours with some of those chilis. >> what's in your queso? >> we're going to start with butter, onion. that will give it depth. if you want to grab a whisk. row tell tomatoes, stewed tomatoes with a little bit of jalapeo.

shiner beer. little bit for the cheese sauce and a little bit for the chef. at this hour of the morning. add in the rotel tomatoes. the most important thing is to get liquid in there first, otherwise the cheese will melt on the bottom. we'll add the velveeta. these are the things you get to choose from. house pickleed jalapeos. >> you can tower those on however you want. >> is this a different chili than i have? >> this is more of a ground beef chili with sausage. it's like classic texas. you like guacamole? >> yes. >> who doesn't like it? >> she might be the biggest guacamole fan i know. >> we'll put there on there. it's starting to get hot there. we're going to add in our cheese -- sour cream is okay?

>> yes, yes. >> what else do you like in cilantro? whatever else. >> i can mix in different chilis. >> that's what's important. how often do you go to a super bowl party and i don't like those things, but i want part of those things. the finest cheese of texas. >> velveeta. >> yes, ma'am. give that a nice whisk. keep whisking that. >> you have it cut up into nice >> melts faster. dice jalapeo, will add a pop to it. not too spicy, because we've seeded the jalapeos. once it gets melty, we've got a little extra there. once i've made the nachos, red onions okay? >> uh-huh. >> i like to add mother layer of cheese -- another layer of cheese sauce. a layer of queso.
