we are going to stay in the teens. so after work and school and into the 6:00 hour, still feels like 18 in the city. and then what hah happens overnight, -- watch what happens overnight, then the cold air rolls in. tomorrow morning we hit the high for the day early but the wind will be stronger. 8:30 tomorrow morning right around zero in the city. and we start to see early in the day the sub zero wind chills. and look at your saturday afternoon, i mean, you got to be smart, limiting time outside and following all the tips to keep yourself safe and healthy. it's going to feel like 10 below. and then even colder overnight saturday into sunday morning. and anywhere from say 10 to 20 degrees below zero, staying cold for your valentine's day. so feels like 20 below when you wake up on sunday. tell you what's interesting, we look ahead, almost to 70-degree swing.

at this hour. feet. the chief believes plastic palette, just one of the items stored inside is what is causing all of the smoke. crews from more than 30 towns have pitched in but it could take several days. you can see the smoke for mile, chopper 2 flew over the massive scene this morning as fire crews tried to get an upper hand on the flames. residents. it's amazing that it's still going strong. >> pretty frightening. it's quite huge. >> reporter: the fire started shortly before 3:00 p.m. yesterday at 152 route 206. inside the warehouses on fire, various items including clothing and paper records. the flames quickly became too much so firefighters from across new jersey have responded to help. >> we have apparatus issues because of the weather.

rotate in and out on a regular basis. >> reporter: our own satellite picked up the plume of smoke. >> yeah, it was wild. that's a lot of smoke, you know, i was wondering about the air quality as well. but they say it's safe. >> reporter: the new jersey department of environmental protection and the u.s. environmental protection agency are monitoring air quality and local officials say they are keeping a close eye on the readings. >> at this point, there's no imminent public health threat. >> reporter: the mayor said there did used to be a federal stockade of mercury next door here but he says it is not an issue anymore because it was removed back in 20126789 all public schools here -- 2012. all public schools were closed today because of the location to the fire. so far, one firefighter has suffered a leg injury. no word yet on what started the fire. reporting live in new jersey,

new at noon, chopper 2 was over the scene of a police- involved crash on long island this morning. it happened around 7:00 on the southern state parkway in west babylon. investigators say the officer was responding to another incident when he was hit. the officer and another driver were treated for minor injuries. the investigation brought traffic to a crawl during the morning rush. a rookie nypd police officer will be sentenced in april following his conviction in the death of an unarmed man. he said his gun went off accidentally at the pink houses in 2014 killing a 28-year-old. prosecutors argued the police officer acted recklessly. he faces up to 15 years in prison. his attorney vowed to appeal. and the family issued a statement saying in part, there are many more police officers who need to be held accountable and we hope this case will send a message to police officers

looking into whether a rampage in ohio last night had a connection with political groups. a man stormed into the deli and started randomly attacking people. witnesses describe the chaos. >> there was a man on the floor bleeding. there were blood on the floor. it was awful. it was just carnage. >> the suspect was shot and killed by police after a brief car chase. the motive is unclear. rite now, police consider the incident a random act. well, imagine a world where police could know about a crime like the one in ohio before it even happens. new psychic technology can do just that. >> taxpayers, quite frankly, expect agencies to do a lot with very little. them to do that. >> tonight at 11:00, we unvail this new system.

america for a history-making visit. he left this morning for a brief stop in cuba. and then pope francis flies to mexico tonight where he will stay through wednesday. during the visit, he is expected to talk about immigration during a mass at the u.s.-mexico border. with valentine's days away, love is already in the air. 50 couples tied the knot in a mass wedding today. each of the newlyweds received a gift from the government. mass weddings have become popular in the philippines as a way for couples who can't afford the ceremony to exchange vows. asthma may play a role in women with fertility problems. researchers found women with asthma took longer to get pregnant and they had fewer successful conceptions. researchers say it may involve hormones and asthma medications. straight ahead here on cbs 2 news at noon, a town gripped by fear. a killer targeting prosecutors and families in texas.

scenes from the coast. we've actually got, let's see, a freezing spray warning is the terminology. cold enough for that salt water to even ice over this weekend. 25 in the city. but with the wind, it feels colder. it feels like 17. 7 the coldest wind chill on the round-up there into the hudson valley. the high today, well, right around 27. that's about it. and again, it won't feel that warm with the wind. normal is 41. it's colder than it should be for a low. get it? see how cold we are. sun sets as 5:26. around the area, sun here. clouds on the increase north and west. possibility of snow with the low to the south and the cold air that's going to come in. by saturday morning, could be dealing with snow squalls. and that's the freezing spray advisory for our friends along the coast. and windy, cold and cold enough to even freeze some of the sea water.

and worst will be sunday morning. widespread sub-zero wind chills. i think this very reasonable 15 to 25 degrees below zero, yeah, that 2 on sunday, if we hit it, that ties the record for the city on valentine's day. and the record coldest high is 17. and that's exactly what we're forecasting. so here's the deal though, on monday, we're up to 32. watch for clouds and some snow quickly giving way to rain. tuesday, 48. could see a soaker on tuesday. and after that ground is frozen over the weekend, we could have issues with run-off but you're almost at 50 by tuesday. >> yeah, that's great. >> thank you. and all new 48 hours tomorrow night, right before our cbs coverage of the republican debate -- >> a texas the town on edge. someone was killing prosecutors.
