there. we have broken a record set 100 years ago. to top it off there's snow on the way. remembering supreme court justice antonin scalia. the political debate that's now heating up over who gets to name his successor. it was a heated night in south carolina as the republican candidates made their case to stay in the race. hear the one issue they all seem to agree on. cbs 2 news sunday morning continues right now. good morning. 7:00 a.m. on this sunday, february 14th. happy valentine's day. i'm diane macedo. >> and i'm andrea grymes. we want to get to meteorologist vanessa murdock. she is tracking the latest with this record breaking cold on this sunday morning. vanessa. >> zero degrees right now. the old record, 2 degrees set back in 1960. so yes, a new record set for today. the last time we hit zero was in 1994. >> wow.

we've felt this cold. couple that with the winds. feels like 23 below out there this morning. frigid to start but we only go up from here. the winds will settle. temperatures will climb. so by this afternoon it will feel much more pleasant. but it is not pleasant out there right now. 13 below in monticello is the actual temperature. 6 below belmar. it feels like 6 below in belmar. we'll take you through the forecast hour by hour. today it is dry but windy. winds settling through the afternoon. at 9:00 a.m., 2 degrees will feel like 12 below. by 3:00, 17 degrees will feel like 3 on the plus side. so that's looking awfully good. feeling so much better. by 6 tonight, 14 degrees.

then feels like 8. at 9:00 tonight, 12 will feel like 8. temperatures climbing, winds subsiding. dangerously cold. coming up we'll talk about snow, then rain on the way. people are waking up to those extremely cold temperatures. >> ilana gold got the short end of the stick. she joins us live outside this morning with the mobile weather la in bryant park. >> reporter: it definitely feels like it's gotten colder. the windchill out here, minus 19 degrees. to give you an example of how cold it is, i got out of our news van a few minutes ago and my eyes are starting to water, my mouth is frozen. i'm going to try to get through this live shot and speak clearly. let's look at the numbers here. the temperature 4.3 degrees. a few moments ago it was 2

miles per hour. it's jumping up and down. a few moments ago it was in the double digits. this wind is going to continue throughout the morning. if you're heading out, you need to be prepared. extreme cold blasting the triarea for the second day in a row. the arctic air bringing dangerous conditions. >> my nose is freezing. my legs are cold. >> reporter: the wind gusts leading to unforgiving windchill. this morning temperatures will feel like 10 below zero. >> like you're inside of a freezer and it's really the wind that's, you know, makes it brutal. >> reporter: the cold is so brutal being out for just a few minutes can be be excruciating, even if you're wearing many layers. >> my face and hands are the worst part. >> how do you feel out here? >> a little bit cold, yes. it's cold. >> very cold. >> more than in paris. >> imagine working outside in this. these construction workers on tenth avenue spent hours in the frigid elements and covered up from head to toe.

had a tough time battling this fire. if your skin is exposed for 15 minutes, frostbite and hypothermia can set in. >> so important to take this seriously. stay indoors for the maximum extent possible. >> mayor de blasio is warning everyone to stay indoors. >> go out for as little time as possible. bundle up. lots of layers. do not have skin exposed. >> reporter: but this extreme cold can cause problems indoors too. burst pipes and emergency calls to plumbers, so make sure you let warm water trip in the faucets. open cabinet doors. and keep your thermostat set to the same temperature day and night. and here's a live look at bryant park. the fountain is frozen over in these frigid temperatures. it is so important to check on the elderrerly and people with health conditions. they're at highest risk. ewe want to keep a close eye on

live in bryant park, ilana gold. >> hurry back into the car. stay warm. the death of supreme court justice antonin scalia has prompted an intense battle. >> as tributes continue to pour in for one of the court's leading conservatives the focus is quickly shifting to the high court's future. dave carlin reports. >> reporter: supreme court justice antonin scalia is remembered for his brilliant legal mind and into rant personality. he was born to italian immigrants in trenton, new jersey and his family later moved to queens. college took him to georgetown school. it was 1986 when president reagan chose him to serve on the high court. >> embraced both the law and a life beyond the court. >> reporter: justice scalia was a strong advocate for gun rights, privacy and he consistently voted to let states outlaw abortion. in a televised address to the

to nominate a successor. first he praised the staunchly conserve tiff justice. >> justice scalia dedicated his life to the corner stone of our democracy. the rule of law. >> reporter: now the president can push for a third justice to the high court and possibly divide. liberal. he may not be able to get it confirmed by a republican congress with members who are already insisting it's a job for the next president. allen sanders is a political science professor. >> people now understand it's not just the politics of the day but the law of the future that will be at stake. >> mayor de blasio ordered all flags to be lowered in the city until february 22nd. president obama ordered all flags on federal property lowered until scalia's burial. his funeral and memorial plans have not been announced. turning to campaign 2016. the future of the supreme court was catapulted. to the forefront. in fact it was the first topic

including taylor swift, adele and justin bieber are set to perform. you can watch the grammys live tomorrow at 8:00. pope francis hopes to spread his message of justice and hope today when he travels to a mexico city suburb racked by drugs and violence. readings at a mass in the suburb will feature passages about not being tempted by the devil. the pontiff ended his first full day in the country yesterday by celebrating mass at the basilica of the virgin of guadalupe. officials estimated as many as 1 million people came out to catch a glimpse of the pope. three dead and dozens injured after a massive chain reaction crash on an interstate. investigators belief passing snow squalls and near white out conditions played a role in the crash that left a tangle of trucks, trailers and cars scattered across three lanes. it happened yesterday morning about 75 miles north of philadelphia.

more than 40 people were take ton local hospitals. this weather can be very dangerous as we can see. 7:13 right now. let head over to meteorologist vanessa murdock. we are below zero in central park. >> one below at this point in tip. the windchill, 19 below. so as far as the windchill goes, that hasn't changed. certainly that temperature did drop another degree. will it drop any more? at this point we're probably as low as we'll go. but not completely out of the realm of possibility. let's go ahead and take you live outside. show you this pristine blue sky. we know it is brutally cold. we have historic cold. one below right now in central park. north-northwest winds at 16 miles per hour. putting the windchill at 19 below. as far as the headlines go, record cold for today. then tomorrow we will see warmer temperatures but we will also see snow. we have a storm system moving on in. it will be a potent one. will start as snow. as we make our way into the evening hours tomorrow it will transition to rain.

the day on tuesday. when we reach highs in the 50s. before today we're setting record in your opinions here. the old record was 2 degrees set 100 years ago. this morning we are now at one below zero. very rare cold. the last time we hit one below was christmas day in 1980. on the vortex satellite and radar picture, beautiful blue skies right now. we'll see lots of sunshine today thanks to this arctic high pressure system. we know it is not going to fee warm out there at all. it will be frigid. we're talking a high of just 17 this afternoon for your valentine's day. not warming things up out there, but we are going to make for a very wet commute, a very slick commute tomorrow night and tuesday for the duration of your day you could run into problems with your flooding. i want to start this forecast off for you here at 6:30 monday morning. reason being, it's nothing but sunshine.

through the day tomorrow, clouds will be thickening. we'll start to see snow showers. through the afternoon the snow fills in for just about everybody. note here we are at 6:00. if you're driving at this point in time, expect slick roads. it's been so cold that this snow will stick. as we make our way toward the late evening hours we'll see the snow transition to rain and then for everybody after the midnight hour it is purely rain. 6:30 tuesday morning for the am commute. we'll get a break. could see the timing change. watch what happens as we go through the day. heavy rain, steady rain at times. i anticipate localized flooding as there storm system moves on through. as far as the snow goes, before we see that transition to rain. expect some accumulation. a coating across long island. 1 to 3 inches through the city. extreme north and western portions of the viewing area it'll possible we'll see 3 to 6 inches before the transition to rain occurs.

we're coming up on 7:30 on this sunday, february 14th. happy valentine's day. i'm andrea grymes. >> and i'm diane macedo. the days top stories are straight ahead. the top story of the day is the weather. vanessa murdock is here with a look at record breaking temperatures. >> i know. one below now in central park. this breaks the old record of 2 set in 1916 and in addition we're expecting this afternoon to tie the record of 17 degrees for valentine's day. so yes, a lot of records being broken not just here in the city but across the northeast this morning. this arctic air has taken over. right now 6 below in sparta. 13 below in monticello. below zero. babylon at zero. plus side 3 in belmar. here's what it feels like with winds. basically holding steady between 20, 25 miles per hour. gusts 35 miles per hour.

open cabinet doors so heat can get to insulated pipes and keep your thermostat set to the same temperature day and night. we're back out live at bryant park on this dangerously cold morning. you can see the fountain is frozen over. mayor de blasio is telling all new yorkers to stay indoors and if you don't have heat you need to call 311 right away. live in bryant park this morning, ilana gold. >> thank you. the man police say brutally stabbed his girlfriend and her three children on staten island is now behind bars. sources tell cbs 2 police got a tip and caught michael sykes at yesterday. on wednesday investigators say sykes murdered his 28-year-old girlfriend rebecca cutler, their 4-month-old daughter ziana. miracle survived. police are searching for kidnapping in brooklyn. the nypd released this

van used in the kidnapping. investigators say two armed men jumped out of the vehicle on tuesday night, grabbed a man in him. they then took the victim into the vehicle and held him there for more than an hour before pushing him out near east 39th street and foster avenue. it's not clear if the men knew the victim. the broadway community is missing dancer. jeffrey j.l. williams is a cast member for along. but friends and family say he did not show up for rehearsals wednesday. he was last seen near his apartment in the bronx at 167th street and jerome avenue. he apparently does not have his cell phone and has not updated his social media accounts in the past four days. after getting the all clear a storm-tossed cruise ship is back to sea. anthem of the seas left new jersey yesterday afternoon. last week passengers were shaken up and the ship was slightly damaged after it cruised into a major storm off the carolina coast.

we see a change over to wintery mix and rain. rain will continue to fall through the day on tuesday. expect a warm soaker. 1 to 2 inches of rain for most of us. isolated 3-inch spots. we anticipate flooding with this system. of course first comes snow. so what will pile up prior to the rain washing it away? about a coating for many of long island. 1 to 3 through the city, the north shore of long island. west chester. rockland. then 3 to 6 inches as we look well north and west of the city. so please keep in mind a very slick evening commute is anticipated on monday. today just ice cold sun. 17 degrees with stiff winds out of the northwest. stronger early. settling later. will feel like 10 below to 5 degrees. tonight 12 is the overnight low. winds will be more settled

34 tomorrow with snow moving many. transitioning to rain. it is american heart month and valentine's day. one of the ways to keep your heart emotionally and physically sound is dancing with your partner. joining us to talk about the benefits of ballroom dancing. thank you for being here. >> wonderful, wonderful to be here. >> let me ask you first. talk a little about what are dancing? >> well, dancing obviously involves a lot of movement. great for your cardio. great for the balance for flexibility. more and more research proves that few minutes of swing or waltz really brings the heart beat up and requires very good muscle tone. ballroom dancing fits in that just wonderful. >> it's something for all ages

because you can do any move social. as such, it is also great way of exercising for many people. not everyone loves to go into gym and dancing is social, dancing is great. great for couples and great for singles too. the way we teach it for the studio, you don't need to have a partner. >> we do have a couple with us. so you've been married for 36 years. how long have you been dancing? >> about five years. >> about five years. why did you get involved? why did you want to do it? >> our daughters both got married and we basically just started because we wanted to look good on the dance floor ourselves. we didn't want to embarrass ourselves. >> and larry, what do you like about it? >> well, it's a lot of fun. second of all, there's a lot of athletic work to be done and

i'm far better shape now than i was five years ago. and it's a challenge and we've had some success so it's fun. >> we talked about the physical benefits, but emotionally, dancing with your wife, what does it do for your relationship emotionally? >> well it's a good thing. a lot of touching involved. >> eye contact. >> eye contact as well. and communication. on the dance floor man leads, woman follows, typically. there's communication going on but we're together. >> you're together. >> learning something together. so it's a great experience. >> would you agree? >> i would. it's great -- i don't particularly enjoy the gym but i really like doing something that we can do together, learn it together and it's a good me. >> you're going to show me a few steps before you all dance. >> absolutely. >> so what they're going to do.
