let's take you to the temperatures in the city, 51 already. it is also 51 in white plains. 33andover. 31 sommerville. we'll get into the upper 40s and low to mid-50s today. past 24 hours quite a difference in the 24-hour temperature change. 7 degrees warmer this morning in the city than yesterday. 6 degrees colder in andover. clouds are already beginning to thicken. that is the general trend for today. thickening clouds followed by wet weather moving in late this afternoon and evening. by noon, 52 degrees out there, partly sunny. 3:00, 54, mostly cloudy. by 6:00 tonight i believe for many of us it will be raining, steady light rain what we anticipate through the evening hours. as the system makes its exit it might exit with a little bit of snow, but generally speaking we

though roadways, however, of course could be slick through the evening and overnight hours. i'll have your full forecast coming up, we'll take a major storm mid-week. back to you. vanessa, thank you. to a developing story on long island, the faa is investigating a small plane crash in suffolk county. the search continues for at least one person that was the last update we received. officials said the plane went down in the port jefferson harbor shortly after 11:00 last night. three people were rescued after the crash. another developing story in michigan, police say six people, not seven, died after a gunman drove around randomly shooting people in parking lots. police arrested the suspect jason dalton after midnight in downtown kalamazoo. they say the 45-year-old shot a father and son at a car dealership parking lot around 10:00 last night. about 15 minutes later he allegedly shot and killed five people at a cracker barrel

shooting a woman several times outside an apartment complex around 6:00 last night. >> this is your worst nightmare, you have somebody driving around randomly killing people. there's usually a rhyme or reason and in this case we're not finding that. >> officials say the suspect did not resist arrest. they say they also found more weapons in his vehicle. here at home an investigation is underway as police work to determine what happened during a shooting in bed stuy that left two nypd officers and a suspect injured. >> one of those officers is still in the hospital. cbs2's ilana gold joins us from kings county hospital with more. >> reporter: we can tell you one of the officers was released from this hospital last night. the other officer is still here getting treated. he's the one shot in the hip. this morning there are so many questions about this shooting. investigators are trying to

actually opened fire at police. cell phone video captured the moments after the gunfire at malcolm x boulevard and lexington avenue early saturday morning. two nypd officers shot filing a wild pursuit. you can see one of the officers on a stretcher getting but the in an ambulance. >> i just heard like a million shots go off and woke me up out of my sleep. >> reporter: one officer in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the hip, and another officer spareed when a bullet struck his bullet-proof vest following a confrontation with the suspect. >> felt like a war going on, all them gunshots. >> reporter: police say the problem started when they responded to shots fired. as they approached the suspect in a maxima, he reportedly pointed a revolver at them and drove off. officers called for backup and chased the suspect through the street. he went the wrong direction and crashed head-on into a police cruiser.

backup officers surrounded his vehicle. it's not sure if the two officers were injured by friendly fire or the gun found in the suspect's car. >> as to whether they were in vehicles, out of vehicles, the shooter was in the vehicle throughout the incident. >> reporter: the suspect shot and critically injured. police call him a career criminal with arrests in illinois and south carolina and new york. he served prison time here. police still don't know why the suspect was allegedly opening fire to begin with. that, too, is still under investigation. that other officer is still recovering here at the hospital. he is expected to be okay, but there's no word on when he'll be released. live in east flat bush, brooklyn this morning, ilana gold, cbs2 news. thank you. police in suffolk county say they're investigating a murder and attempted suicide at a home

officers say a 32-year-old woman was stabbed to death inside on apartment after a dispute with her husband. police say the 31-year-old man was found inside the home with a severed arm, after he reportedly tried to commit suicide. he's expected to survive. residents tell us this is usually a quiet neighborhood. >> when i heard all of this, you know, i was afraid to even step out of my house. this is supposed to be a safe neighbor. >> you never know what people are going through, you know, problems people have. never know what's going on behind closed doors. >> investigators say the couple had one child together and the woman had another child. both of them were found safe at a different location. time 8:05. a date with danger. we have photos of the man suspected of stealing more than just hearts from people he met on a dating app. >> some may have doubted us, but we never doubted each other. >> when you win it's beautiful.

campaign 2016, it was a big night in the race for the white house. hillary clinton clinched the win in nevada, 53% of the vote, with 90 precincts reported. compared to 47% for sanders. donald trump won the south carolina primary with nearly one-third of the vote. the end of jeb bush's campaign. he finished well behind the new york candidate. >> i want to begin by thanking the people of south carolina. this is a special state. >> reporter: another win for donald trump. he came out ahead of marco rubio and ted cruz who finished in a tie for second place. >> we can stand together with a proven, consistent

south carolina and the states ahead? >> jeb bush suspended his campaign. how do you think that disrupts things on the republican side? >> i don't think it disrupts things much at all. it makes the argument a little bit cleaner for rubio to say he is now the mainstream republican alternate to trump and cruz. but jeb bush wasn't getting a huge amount of voters, and it looks at the moment like his voters may disperse a little bit. the big deal of course is he did have a lot of financial backers who can freely go behind marco rubio or john kasich, the two mainstream alternatives to trump and cruz. a lot of them are likely to go for rubio, so then what does it look like for rubio to be the establishment candidate by himself against those two? in that regard, jeb bush, the money behind him, will be helpful for rubio. >> it was close on the democratic side between sanders

was going to come out on top. >> no, they didn't. and hillary clinton was expected to have done well in nevada, though at the end it looked like sanders maybe could pull it out for himself. so the expectations game going into these votes, hillary clinton benefited a little bit. a win is a win for her. also she did very well among the african-american community in nevada. that looks like is what's going to happen in south carolina. the theory has always been that it's going to be difficult for bernie sanders outside of those early liberal states when the electorate is not basically all white and this is turning out, it looks like what's happening so that's very good news for hillary clinton. >> this is so interesting to watch. >> it is. thank you for letting us pick your brain and we look forward to seeing the show. you can catch john and a full hour of face the nation this morning at 10:30 here on cbs2. dozens of people attended the washington, d.c. funeral of

forecast now with meteorologist vanessa murdock. >> good morning. it is a beautiful start to the day. and overall it's going to be a great end to the weekend. we do have rain moving in our direction. just a little bit later on. let's take you live outside, show you what's happening. we've got a few clouds overhead. 51 degrees. north-northwest winds at about 15 miles per hour. as we look at your headlines, still above normal today. yesterday we hit 61. not the case today, but still mild. evening showers moving in, likely sticking around until midnight. may end as a little bit of snow. but we're not expecting accumulation. and then there is a mid-week soaker coming our way. temperature trend looks like this, yesterday 61. today we'll top out at 54 and we continue the decline from here. what's going to happen tomorrow is it's going to be a beautiful, bright day, just not as warm as it's been. as we look at the vortex satellite and radar picture now

beginning to thicken from the southwest. it's all in advance of an area of low pressure now making its impact across kentucky and west virginia. tracking east and northeasterly direction and bringing us clouds first, wet weather to by late this afternoon i think a few showers are possible and then in the evening hours showers become a little bit more in the way of steady rain. about midnight colder air starts to dive in, so we could see a little bit of snow before the system exits. roadways could be slick overnight. before your morning commute tomorrow, there may still be slick spots, anticipate no major impacts from this storm, because it will not be happening as you drive into work. by tomorrow we're looking at mostly sunny skies. just cooler. cold front moves through, that cold air dives into place. for your day on tuesday, increasing clouds, showers to come late in the afternoon because this is the start of

here is the deal, late monday into early thursday will be the brunt of this storm, and we may even see thunderstorms, a lot of rain expected with this system as this brings gulf moisture into play. on the east end of long island is where the totals seem to be most impressive at this point in time, pushing 3 inches in montauk. most of us getting between 1.5 and probable 2.5 inches that will last some time and very windy then. for today, little bit breezy. lots of sun to start. increasing clouds. 54 the high in the city. 42 monticello. showers start late this afternoon, steadier stuff through the evening hours. then as we make our way toward midnight the system exits. maybe a few snowflakes. otherwise, overnight 36. tomorrow beautiful, mostly sunny. 47. much cooler than it has been over the weekend. tuesday, 42, increasing clouds.

could see a little bit of a wintry mix overnight tuesday into wednesday. wednesday will be purely periods of rain, overnight wednesday into thursday morning when we anticipate the biggest impact with heavy rain, maybe thunderstorms. wednesday night and thursday morning commute could be impacted. by thursday afternoon high is at 50. when the system exits we could see wrap around snow showers with this. but i wouldn't expect accumulating snow. just another taste of winter before the system -- >> no shovels necessarily? >> doesn't look like a system for shovels at all, but for the buckets. some may have flooding problems for sure. thank you. in today's living large, we go inside a luxury penthouse. >> it has endless windows and a courthouse. emily smith reports. >> reporter: this building has been designed with custom brick

morning. i'm-- sunday morning. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm andrea grymes. let's get first to meteorologist vanessa murdock who has been tracking the forecast. looks like a nice morning. >> it's a beautiful morning. today will be another nice one. just not as nice as yesterday. here is the deal. very mild for today. most of us in the low and mid- 50s. we will however see more clouds as the day progresses and we also have rain moving in by this evening. first let's take you live outside. what a beautiful picture that is from high atop the empire state building. we've got blue skies. 51 degrees and partly cloudy. west-northwest winds at 13 miles per hour right now. moving forward for today, a mild day. increasing clouds as i mentioned. then this evening i think after 4:00 we'll start to see showers, becomes more steady close to 6:00, especially south and east of the city. the system will be moving out close to midnight tonight. as that happens we may see a few passing snowflakes before it's completely out of here. overnight slick roadways are

by your morning commute the system is gone. again, we could still see slick spots. coming up we'll discuss that last bullet point, a larger storm system i think will have much bigger impacts for the mid- week. back to you. thank you. now to our top story, two nypd officers are recovering this morning after being shot during confrontation with a suspect in brooklyn. >> that suspect was also shot. cbs2's ilana gold joins us live from kings county hospital with the latest. >> reporter: both of those officers are expected to make a full recovery. one of them is still getting treated here at kings county hospital. he's the one shot in the hip. at this point it's unclear if the suspect is the one who shot them. police say it could have been friendly fire that left that area riddleed with bullets. cell phone video captured the moment early saturday morning. two nypd officers shot following a wild pursuit.

on a stretcher getting put in an ambulance. >> i just heard, like, a million shots go off and woke me up. >> reporter: officer william reddin still in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the hip. and andrew yurkiw spareed when a bullet struck his bullet- proof vest vest falling a confront -- following a confrontation with suspect jamal funes. police responded to shots fired and as they approached funes he reportedly pointed a gun at them and drove off. police called for backup and they chased him through the streets and funes went the wrong way and slammed head-on into a miscruiser. 30 bullets were unloaded and investigators say most, if not all, by police. it's unclear in the two officers were injured by friendly fire or by this gun found in the suspect's car. >> we'll attempt to identify where were the various officers

as to whether they were in vehicles, out of vehicles. the shooter was in the vehicle throughout the whole incident. >> reporter: jamal funes also shot and critically injured. police call him a career criminal with 11 arrests in illinois, a record in north carolina in new york. here he was convicted of assault in 2007 and served prison time. criminal charges against the suspect are still pending. at last check he was in critical condition at brookdale hospital. ilana gold, cbs2 news. thank you. turns out that back in 1989 officer andrew yurkiw's father who was a cop was also shot in the line of duty. he survived due to his bullet- proof vest also. the man who shot him is still in prison.

the streets in downtown brooklyn in support of former nypd officer peter liang. he was convicted of manslaughterrer. he was convicted february 11th in the 2014 shooting death of an unarmed man inside a public housing building in east new york. the crowd held a moment of silence calling the case a tragedy for both families. but counter protestors also rallyed across the street saying justice must be served. >> the black community wants a jail sentence. you may not commit reckless impunity. in prison. in friends and family are grieving the loss of a student who died from a possible hazing incident at buffalo state college. the former basketball player died thursday night.

may have been hazeed off campus while pledging -- [ no audio ] family say he he had had been vomiting several weeks. the family thinks he may have been given a toxic drink. the school responded -- this morning police are looking for a robber who is targeting people through a dating app. here's a photo. they say the suspect sent to one of his victims. he was also caught on video along route 73 in mount laurel. police say he met the victim at that location then had the victim drive to a secludeed area and tricked the victim to handing over a phone. he tried the same thing with a second person. police in new jersey are warning businesses about bogus $100 bills. police in wood bridge say several stores and restaurants

have a shows two phony bills slipping by a cashier. investigators say the bills passed the marker test because they were made using a real five dollars bill. clerks are being urged to check the hologram, it should match the face on the bill. >> good tip. 8:36. good samaritan jumps into action after witnessing a helicopter fall from the sky. >> immediately the lady started yelling, please help my son. he's only 15 years old. >> we have video of this amazing rescue team to save everyone on board. >> it's 4 inches long, worth $35,000. it's what you're looking at there. why this wad of hair from nearly 50 years ago may be go down in history. >> doesn't look like it's brushed. maybe neaten it up a little. your hair looks good. >> thank you. all i can think about looking at that picture is hair down the drain. gross.

warming up a little bit more every time we check in. vanessa murdock says more of that is on the way, but so is rain. first, how much money would you pay for a lock of someone's hair? what if that hair was john lennon? this 4-inch tuft sold for $35,000 at auction. the hairdresser kept it after giving lennon a trim in 1968. he got the haircut because he was about to film a movie. >> looks like a little bit more than just a trim. more than a dozen strangers dove into action when a helicopter tour took a turn in hawaii. it was caught on camera. a family was about to tour the pearl harbor memorial when another helicopter began flying extremely low. moments later that helicopter was submerged. strangers banded together to bring the victims to shore. but a 15-year-old was straped in his seat and couldn't get out.

underwater, rescuers managed to bring him up. >> he was as blue as a crayon. to me he appeared dead. >> thankfully for the teenager, one of those good samaritans was a critical care nurse. she was able to clear his airways and started doing compressions. shortly after an ambulance arrived and all the people all five of them on board survived. >> a lot of people glad for those. standers. >> for sure. let's check in with cbs2's meteorologist vanessa murdock with a pretty good forecast. >> for the beginning of the day, though many are seeing the clouds thicken up, which means it won't be as bright and beautiful as those of us who live more to the north. clouds will continue to thicken and showers and steadier rain for this afternoon and evening. will be another mild day. as we look at current

still 28 days left to go. yesterday's high of 51 the same as it would be on april 15th. mild air in place, but told we won't -- today we won't have the sunshine from yesterday. clouds will thicken as an area of low pressure tracks from the northeast to northeast. centered over kentucky now. what will happen is it will move generally in this direction, bringing first the clouds, then the moisture follows. i think after 4:00 this afternoon we start to see a little bit in the way of shower activity and then some steadier rain as we head toward the evening and overnight hours. mainly south and east where we see most of the moisture falling. here's what it looks like hour by hour this morning. much of the afternoon staying dry. 6:00you see this steadier rain pushing through, mainly again the cities south and east. 10:00tonight, again still south and east, mainly where we see the precipitation. also want to note the hint of a little bit of snow. close to that midnight hour cold air starts diving in.

possible we'll see a little bit of snow before it's completely out of here by tomorrow morning. could be slick spots on the roadways. morning commute while nothing will be falling, take a little more caution as you make your way in to work. as far as mid-week system goes, this will be the talker this week. tuesday, especially wednesday and thursday, even friday, a system coming out of the deep south will bring plenty of moisture with it and it will be powerful, too. it will be windy. at this point in time the track looks to be mainly west, heaviest rain wednesday evening into thursday morning. could get thunderstorms. but expect big impacts wednesday night and thursday morning on the commutes and a little bit of winter precipitation is possible as this system wraps out thursday night into friday. could see wrap around snow showers. the daylight hours. 54. mainly dry until the late afternoon when the rain moves through. could see a little bit of snow close to midnight before it's 47 tomorrow. mostly sunny skies.

david hyman and jake wick doff. jake, you're a survivor. tells about your story. >> when i was 15 i was diagnosed with stage 4 hodgkins. i've been involved in the fund raising world and that's what brings me here today. >> when you were 14 years old, getting that news, i can't imagine, what was that like? >> the scariest thing in the world to hear. my mom actually told me. the moment was incredibly scary and it's almost like a lightning bolt is sent through your entire body and i it's really horrifying. >> and you are taking that experience and trying to turn it into something positive now, not only with cycle for survival, but with what you're studying, right? >> yes. i am a medical student at the

mount sinai and i will be an oncologist. >> when we say rare cancers what does that include? >> those that affect fewer than 20,000 people in the united states, and though each individual cancer is rare, about 20% of all the cancers people get qualify as rare cancers. so it's actually a significant majority of all the cancer diagnoses we see. >> what will some example -- are some examples? >> ovarian cancer, and then even hodgkins would be a classic example. there's a long list of cancers people probably haven't heard of. testicular cancer another common rare cancer. >> that's why cycle for survival is so important to raise money for the research to fight these cancers. for people who have never participated, jake, what is it? >> cycle for survival is an event at that takes place at equinox gyms across the country. they empty out a big room and

hundreds of people come to support the cause. you spin and dance and you sing and you put on feather boas and the world. and you get to raise money for cancer research at the same time. >> doctor, about the money, explain where exactly where it goes. >> all the money goes to cancer research. i think that's extremely important. the money goes to cancer research within six months of being raised. this money is all going to help fight and cure rare diseases. >> there are so many people, not only you, who are affected, who are family members, affected by cancer. so many people wonder when is there going to be a cure for cancer. what do you say to people who ask you that? >> i think the only way we're going to get there is fighting each cancer individually and it's organizations like cycle for survival that will get us there. rare cancers are under studyed and under funded.

weekend, but there are colder temperatures still. >> we have chef here with a healthy look at what we can do to both warm up and fuel our bodies this winter, right, chef? >> thank you very much. yes, we're going to be cooking soups here. even though this seems like winter is not in new york, but it's coming. >> it's coming. >> it's going to be coming. we have three soups. let me show you what we have here. first one is an indian inspired red lentil and roasted sweet potatoes and roasted red peppers. >> love those ingredients. >> great ingredients. >> you're going to tell us what are in these two. >> the red lentil soup is red lentils, that's the main ingredient. also swiss chard. and it's all about the spices in that particular soup. we have cumin and fennel.

>> here is the roasted sweet potato and red pepper soup. two ingredients you wouldn't think go together, but they do. it's nice and mellowed down with a little bit of coconut milk. that's a nice healthy fat. >> throw it all in? >> yeah. now i have carrot and garlic and celery and the red peppers have been roasted. that's going in. been roasted. that goes in. >> smells so good. >> yeah, it's beautiful. going to add a little bit of vegetable stock. >> this is a vegetarian soup as well? >> all of those are vegetarian soup. cocoa nut milk. >> i never would have thought to add coconut. >> simmers 15, 20 minutes. i have the finished one here. >> i was going to say, i'm bumed we can't try it, but we can't.

pulse it up, or you can do this in a blender, that would work, too. >> anything to incorporate it all together? >> right. you can make it a little bit chunky if you like. >> what's nice about soups like this, especially we're frequently working in the field and looking for things we can bring for lunch, this is easy to throw in a thermos or to go cup. you can drink it if you need to. >> absolutely. absolutely. >> that looks delicious. what's the shelf life on soups? >> first of all, they freeze really well. >> that's a good point, too. >> garnished with a little bit of basil. yes, you can freeze them and they freeze well. i usually keep them in the fridge for three to five days, something like that. >> i love that. >> after that they start feeling old. >> so tasty. >> aren't they good? >> nice sweet kick. >> never would have thought to put the sweet potatoes and red pepper together. >> right. >> what should people keep in mind when cooking for the winter in general?
