>> i'm mary calvi. a coast guard team and fishing boat crew are all safe after a rough morning at sea. >> janelle burrell is live at this section of queens. janelle. >> it was quite the scene out here this morning. this group of coast guard members going out to rescue those fishermen and ended up needing help themselves. you can see the fishing boat here on the shore behind me this afternoon. the surf last night was so rough and foggy it was a challenge for even the most experienced sea men. one by pun a basket from a coast guard helicopter plucked the seven fishermen to safety as residents looked on. >> this is intense, very intense. >> even with the 76-foot boat so close to dry ground the violent waves were too dangerous to risk having the

>> u.s. coast guard rescue swimmers in the water couldn't handle the conditions so they are deceiving. >> this fishing boat had been on the 8th day of it's journey when around 2 this morning 12- foot waves began tossing the vessel around water lapping onto the deck and below. >> they were using pumps to get it over but then they grounded. >> it was the middle of the night at 3:00 a.m. we received the first call for a boat distressed. they ran ashore but they didn't know where they were. >> as one of the boats trying to find them it appears they hit a sand bar causing them to cap size two miles from where the fishing boat got stuck. the crew of five managing to swim safely to shore. >> we didn't find the exact

rescue flares from the boat. >> people alerted authorities. >> we smelled fumes in the air coming through the windows. we didn't know what was going on at the time. >> they were relieved realizing how the outcome could have been far worse. >> we had to get them out of there and make them safe. >> and now the entire coast guard team is safe as well as the fishermen that were taken to an area hospital to be checked out and moments ago coast guard officials went to jamaica hospital to interview those fishermen to get a better idea of what transpired and they are also talking with the owner of the boat in virginia to arrange to have it tugged away. janelle burrell cbs 2 news. >> what a scene. thank you. today people are cleaning up from a powerful storm that littered neighborhoods from new jersey to long island. toppled trees fell onto homes

andrea grymes joins us live with more. >> mary people across the tristate area heard this storm from bergen county to westchester to here on long island. now we are hearing the clean up where folks are glad there were no reports of injuries given the damage left behind. >> i heard the big boom and her screaming february was horrible. >> tricia initially thought the worse when her neighbors massive tree came crashing down into the back of her house knowing the 15-year-old daughter was upstairs on the third floor but the enormous limbs narrowly missed her. >> it came through the roof straight down and through the side. she's fine. she was very shaken up last night. >> shaken up and left with a massive clean up not only here

street on chicago avenue where this tree uprooted overnight crashing into the front of the home. no one at the time was injured. neighbors describe the incredible winds that blew through around midnight. >> it sounded like a freight train going through like they say with the tornadoes. >> on nearby new hampshire avenue power lines came down sparking a fire that two cars were parked on the street. >> the window started to glow orange and oh my god the car is on fire. >> both belonged to susan and her husband this is the little left of one of them a burned out shell. down the block another tree came down damaging this car. >> we heard the transformer blow saw the flash and looked out the window and this is what it was. >> and you are taking another live look at the torched car here on new hampshire avenue.

12,500 customers across nassau suffolk and the rock aways are without power. the clean up going on here is just one example of what's going on at this hour across the tristate area. reporting live nassau county andrea grymes cbs 2 news. >> thank you. last night's wild weather left a mess all across the area. in queens parts of a building facade crashed onto the cars and sidewalk below. crews in new jersey are working to clear the road after trees came down blocking the road and taking down power lines and a similar scene in new mill ford where a large tree crashed onto a home and caused problems on the george washington bridge and knocked a tractor trailer over right in the middle of the bridge. tens of thousands of people are without power in the area. more than 12,000 outages reported.

new at noon route 130 in south bankruptcy wick has reopened. seven people were injured in an 11 car crash early this morning. two of them are in serious condition. the crash happened around 6:30 when a bus failed to stop at an intersection. southbound 130 was closed for two hours and opened at 8:30. filing a lawsuit against

old woman was in a brownsville park last month drinking with her father who she's been separated from most of her life. the da says the two were being intimate and when the group of young men saw what was going on one or more of them joined in. a source tells cbs 2 a young woman is not cooperating and is troubled. mitt romney chose not to run in the 2016 presidential election but he's having an impact with the remark he made wednesday. >> mitt romney is calling on donald trump to release his tax returns. >> frankly i think we have good reason to believe that there's a bomb shell in donald trump's taxes. every time he's asked about his taxes he dodges and delays and says we are working on it. >> trump took to twitter calling romney one of the dumbest and worst candidates in republican history and says he'll release his returns when

flooding along the millstone and the river. south shore reading still hanging onto a few in the low 50s but i really appreciate some of these pictures. brian send this in from this morning and then mike sent this in. boy you just sea see the seas. a south west wind and a full moon so it's been trying along the coast and now more wind from the west. skies in the city gray and threatening in the sense we will see a few more showers but it's starting to cool down. 60 at midnight and now 49. that west wind in control gusting to 20 miles per hour. relative humidity at 66% so a few 50s to the east and the 40s and the 30s north and west. the change over is under way. these numbers compared to yesterday still warmer but that big warm up and lift was why we

thunderstorms not unheard of but very rare and so violent with those almost 70 miles per hour winds. wind now in the city out of the west at 20. stronger winds for long island still feeling it 31 miles per hour wind gust for the jersey shore. a west wind then a northwest wind so it's vital that power is restored because we are going to need the heat. wake up weather tomorrow wind chills between 5 and 15 degrees north and west, 15 to 25 for the city. that's going to be cold. 60 the high for the day for the books. that was at midnight. we are already well below that. sunset at 5:42 and a mix of sun and clouds. light rain middlesex, monmouth, ocean county and putnam and fairfield counties as well. and farther to the west expanding the view there's the low. you see how big this storm still is? still snowing in tennessee and north carolina. we don't see the snow but we

now here's the problem. we got soaked. two of and a half inches of rain. white plains 1.62. even caldwell 2-inches. now we are still concerned about flooding north jersey and connecticut as well. summerset county taking a hit. as far as additional rain it's not a lot but more light showers the area wrapping around that low, a flurry north and west. then we see the sun tomorrow and dealing with chilly conditions before a welcomed warm up into the weekend. so after a wild windy and wet one yesterday and last night a few left over showers but the chill begins. 38 on friday will feel like the 20s and then the recovery saturday into sunday but do watch out still a lot of issues with the wind and rain from yesterday. >> can't figure out what it wants to do. get cold, get warm. >> wear the coat or don't.
