that's what happened this morning. >> it's part of a disturbing trend above and below ground. steve has more on this developing story. steve? >> the latest victim a 53-year- old man on his way to work here at madison and 63rd. he apparently bumped into another man. the suspect slashed a man with the sharp object on a chin and face and the victim continued on his way to work here when he realized it was time to call 911. we spoke to a witness. >> it was like 8:15. i saw the ambulance over here and the cops pulled up behind him and they went right into the ambulance so someone must have been in there injured. >> the victim was taken to the hospital where he received six stitches. this as reported slashings and stabbings in new york city so far this year are up 21% compared to last year. in terms of the subway alone 15 slashings so far this year

those are the cold hard facts. steve langford cbs 2 news. >> thank you. new at noon the stunning fall out in court today james burke pleaded guilty to charges. he assaulted a man and tried to cover it up. janelle burrell is live with more. >> we are accustomonned to seeing james burke in his police chief uniform. today he appeared in court in khaki prison scrubs withdrawing his not guilty plea taking this plea deal from prosecutors admitting to not only beating investigators. >> a tumbling fall from grace from a highest ranking police officer to a federal prisoner. james burke pled guilty telling the judge today in part i willfully used unreasonable forced slapped and hit the individual causing bodily injury.

burke in public back in december when f.b.i. agents first arrested him. his attorney denying the allegations. today the 51-year-old admitting to violating christopher loeb's civil rights by beating him and forcing people to cover it up. >> he met with the police department to agree on ways to get their stories straight. >> in 2012loeb was arrested for breaking into the unmarked police suv admitting to stealing the police chief's duffel bag inside with the police belt and ammunition but sex toys. burke himself showed up at loeb's home to confront him and when he was chained inside the police station house burke sought revenge repeatedly beating him. >> i got hit again, choked,

>> burke returning back to prison where he's been held since his arrest. >> just a few minutes ago we heard from the attorney for christopher loeb who says he hopes there's a first step to reform in the police department and asking the judge for 51 millions of sentencing prison time for james burke that's just over four years in federal prison. reporting live this noon from 2 news. >> thank you. sources tell cbs 2 an nypd captain has been stripped of his gun because he couldn't be found when two officers were shot last weekend. he was supposed to be on duty until 4:00 a.m. but when the officers were wounded he was out of the building. he's been placed on modified duty. internal affairs is investigating. now to campaign 2016 republican presidential candidates are trying to slow

about half the number of delegates needed to secure are up next week in super tuesday contests. mary? >> andrea thank you. bomb threats disrupted schools in bergen county, new jersey this morning. students were moved to a safe location while authorities searched the building. they were let back in after it was safe. schools also received threats. last month nine school districts in bergen county received bomb threats. a manhattan school building is closed today after a fire broke out. a fire reported at 40 irving place on east 16th street at 11:00 p.m. the building known as washington irving campus houses six schools. no word on what caused the fire. new information on what may have motivated a debtly shooting ram--deadly shooting rampage in texas.

he opened fire on co-workers. three people were killed and 14 were wounded before an officer gunned him down. the unidentified officer is being called a hero. >> he had to stop that threat. you've got two or three hundred people in there luckily two or three hundred people came out. >> he was armed with an assault rifle and hand gun. they are trying to figure out how he was able to get those weapons. he had convictions for multiple misconduct. 1993 bombing on world trade center 23 years ago terrorists blew up a rental van. six people were killed 1,000 some victims families remember taking part in that ceremony and it's taking place near the north pool of the 9/11 memorial. commuter concerns in new jersey.
