>> reporter: police say two men were slashed and injured here on the corner of 21st street and 6th avenue. we saw investigators out here collecting evidence. they tell us the suspects got kicked out of this nightclub down the block. they ended up the the intersection and attacked the victims. this happened at 3:30 this morning and again the initial problem started at the slate nightclub. the two suspects, both of them men, started a confrontation with the bouncers and eventually left. but seconds later, we're told, they randomly walked up to a 27- year-old man, started an argument with him then slashed him in the hand. police also tell us a man who they met in the club tried to intervene but the suspects turned on him and slashed him in the whichest and shoulders. -- chest and shoulders. we just talked to a man who lives nearby and he called this a shock. >> what are your concerns when you hear something like this? >> i mean i wouldn't expect anything like that in this area. now you just have to be a

you have to be a little more alert on your surroundings. especially at nighttime now. i mean, we have a couple clubs right around here. you just have to be even more alert. especially on the weekends. it kind of brings you down to earth a little bit. >> it's especially scary considering there have been 611 slashings and stabbings in the city since january. that number is 21% higher compared to the same time last year. just a few weeks ago a 24-year- old woman was slashed in the face in chelsea. just a few blocks from today's scene. and on friday a 60-year-old man was slashed in the face getting on the subway in midtown when he accidentally bumped into the suspect. now this morning two men were slashed in chelsea here at 6th avenue and 21st street. police are still looking for the suspects. they say they don't have a good description of who these perpetrators are. if you have any information they want you to call them immediately. live in chelsea, ilana gold. >> is thank you.

are searching for the drivers involved in three separate city. the first happened this morning in the bronx. a 26-year-old man was standing at the ramp of the cross bronx expressway in webster avenue in tree month when he was struck. in ozone park queens police say a 48-year-old man was getting into his parked car when he was hit around 4:00 a.m. there's no description of that vehicle. then around 4:40 this morning police say a 41-year-old man was on his bike when he was struck by a dark-colored sedan in park slope brooklyn. a young store owner was gunned down in new jersey. now police are looking for his killer. 21-year-old jamal gaines was shot and killed. police say two men stormed inside the east coast boutique after it closed. gaines family says he was a role model to the community. >> he would have given them anything they asked for.

them. torn the family completely up. and i ask why. >> police say robbery may have been the motive. >> a firefighter had to be given cpr at the scene of a raging house fire along the jersey shore. the flames raced through a two and a half story wood-framed home. the firefighter was revived and rushed to the hospital. the flames, as you can see, were so intense and stubborn that fire crews from several neighboring towns were called in to help. no word yet on how this fire started. the pilot of a small plane that crashed into a tree is recovering this morning after getting trapped 50 feet off the ground. this happened yesterday in pennsylvania. it took rescuers about four hours to get the 87-year-old pilot down. he was taken to the hospital but only had a few scrapes on his hands. the cause of the crash is under investigation. now to campaign 2016. another victory for hillary clinton. the former secretary of state

8:09 am
>> while another republican contender attempted to elevate the tone of things. >> i don't think it's a good thing to see presidential candidates just behaving like school children bickering. >> most of the candidates will talking on face the nation this morning. >> a preview now. good morning, john. >> good morning. yep, we have the top three republican contenders on the show today. donald trump will start us off. then ted cruz and marco rubio. it's gotten very heated and so conversations. on the democratic side bernie sanders took a big beating last night in south carolina so what's the future for his campaign? we're also going to talk to anthony salvanto. we have brand new cbs battleground tracker poll numbers which will give us a preview of super tuesday and how the states are trending, but more important we'll look at what the voters in the states are thinking behind the horse race numbers. >> all right so john, seems
8:10 am
in terms of the attacks we've heard the last few days, especially between rubio and trump. what do you make of rubio sort of changing strategy heading into super tuesday? how do you think this plays out? >> well it's -- he's going toe to toe with him. trying to show he is the alternative to donald trump. he'd like it to be a two man race. he'd like all the people who are voting against donald trump in the primaries and caucuses to come over to him. the question is though by matching donald trump's tactics, by the one liners, the insults, the circus show, a little bit, whether he's actually playing on trump's turf. whether people when they see that see enough of a distinction between the two of them that they pick marco rubio in a battle against donald trump. so we'll have to see if that happens. whether the old line is true if you wrestle with a pig the pig just enjoys it and you get dirty. or whether marco rubio really comes out ahead in this new
8:11 am
on the democratic side bernie sanders has been hammering clinton about her high paid speeches. he seems to have won over the new york times on this issue. does that mean he's gaining traction or is the outcome in south carolina a sign he needs to change strategies? >> well, winning over the new york times only gets you so far. in south carolina he was really walloped. there's just no way to get around it the problem for bernie sanders is not just that he was defeated so soundly in south carolina or that he lost in nevada, it's that those are two pieces of data in an equation that works out well for hillary clinton. the analysis has been after you get past iowa and new hampshire the elector at gets less white and less liberal. there are tougher places for bernie sanders. that turned out to be true in nefs and south carolina. it's very likely to be true in a number of the states going forward. that's why it looks good for hillary clinton right now.

christian bale, mark ruffalo, tom hardy, sylvester stallone and mark rylance. >> it's got to be stallone. this is the best story -- one of my favorite stories coming into oscar night. he was nominated 40 years ago for playing this character. he didn't win 40 years ago. this would be great if he won. if there is a spoiler look for it to come from christian bale for the big short or mark ruffalo for spotlight. both casts are strong casts. i think if they're going to honor the casts with an oscar it will come in this category. >> he won the golden globe for this. >> he did. and he's won several awards in this category leading up to it. oscar loves their stories. >> best supporting actress. jennifer jason leigh, rachel mcadams, alicia vikander and kate winslet.

all of these performances are just fantastic. right now it looks like it's going to to be between kate winslet and alicia vikander. i think it's going to go to vikander. she's fantastic in the danish girl. she's a break out year for her. she was in four movies. another tip she was in was excellent. could have been nominated -- she was for several awards. i think she wins this. i felt like more than eddie reddmayne the danish girl is her movie. >> best picture. the big short, bridge of spies, mad max, the revenant, and brooklyn. who will win be. >> spotlight threw a wrench in everything last night. won five awards. best picture, best director. maybe it's spotlight.
8:49 am
i still think it's revenant. that's the heavy favorite. >> and best actor. >> i also think it takes best director too. it's the highest grossing of all eight nominees. if it does win it's the first time a director has won back to back best pictures oscars in history. so i think that's really cool. >> how do you think chris rock will do as host? there were calls for him to drop out out of the lack of diversity in nominees. >> he's teased something. he was on twitter. he's going to come with something in terms of the controversy. if anything is going to happen it'll be at the top of the show and it's going to be interesting how can he find that balance between being entertaining and funny but saying this is a serious issue that we need to keep talking about after the oscars. >> we'll have to watch and see. time now is 8:49. hollywood dining after the break. we have a hollywood-style menu fit for a movie star. this is cbs 2 news sunday
