high on wednesday. today, seasonably chilly. in the mid-40s for many of us. right now, on the vortex satellite and radar picture, these snow showers are falling apart. this snow is barely reaching the ground. the air is very dry. you may see a few flakes through the morning hours. after that, skies clear. temperatures will warm up. thirty-four in the city. the windchill is very light this morning. wind only blowing at about 5 miles per hour. as we go through the day, noon, 39. feeling like 38. by 3:00, mostly sunny and 45. that is as warm as it gets today. still a little bit of an improvement over yesterday. then by six o'clock this evening, 42 degrees. feeling like 40. and a little bit of daylight. coming up in my full forecast, we will talk about more specifics on how quickly the temperatures climb. back to you.

firefighters battled a big fire in brooklyn overnight after flames broke out at a commercial building which you can see in this picture. this happened in east new york. the fire began on blake street around 1:00 this morning. it is now completely out. inside at the time. started. police say 36-year-old roger luvall has been arrested in connection with a car explosion in the box. investigators say two aerosol cans, one armed with a detonator, ignited inside of a moving car wednesday night. the 24-year-old driver and his passenger were not injured. roger luvall is charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and arson rate. campaign 2016. some presidential hopefuls are gaining steam after voters went to the polls in five states on super saturday. donald trump and ted cruz both split wins last night. donald trump is still leading the delegate count with 374.

bernie sanders pick up two wins to hillary's one. she is still ahead with 1100 delegates. craig boswell has more on the super saturday races from washington. >> ted cruz kicked off super saturday with big wins in kansas and maine. >> super tuesday last week was a phenomenal night. where we won victories all over the country. today, on super saturday,, we're doing the same thing. >> donald trump took louisiana and kentucky. >> i want to thank the people of louisiana and the people of kentucky. i want to congratulate ted cruz on maine and on kansas. and he should do well in maine, because it is very close to canada. >> even in the states where ted cruz lost, he came in a close second. >> what we are seeing is our campaign. >> senator marco rubio is looking ahead to march 15 when votes. >> we will win florida. 15 how confident we are. states.

with bernie sanders and hillary clinton splitting the vote. bernie sanders picked up wins in nebraska and kansas caucuses. clinton won the louisiana primary which has more delegates. both candidates are setting sights on tuesday's primary in michigan. >> i'm grateful to everyone who turned out to support us. but now all eyes turn to michigan. >> we will win here in michigan. >> is it -- today the democrats will caucus and maine. this morning, john dickerson is talking with hillary clinton, donald trump and ted cruz on face the nation. we're joined live from washington with a preview. good morning, john. >> good morning. we're going to talk to all of the front runners. hillary clinton on the democratic side. on the republican side, it looks like it is moving toward a two man race. we will talk to donald trump and ted cruz. of course marco rubio would like to get in that conversation too. but for now, it looks like those two.

chairman of the republican national committee. because there has been a lot of conversation this week about the health of the republican party. some people think it is breaking apart. will have that conversation plus new numbers from our battleground tracker poll about what is happening in michigan as that state says to vote next week. and then a roundtable weather -- where we will put all of this political news into perspective. a lot of talk this week about the pop-up -- possibility about a contestant gop nomination. how realistic to think that is given the super saturday results show? there is a slum shot that it would be contested -- that means nobody would go to the convention with the 1000 to hundred 37 delegates that would be required for the nomination. but it would be a pretty ugly thing is that happened. we still have so many results to go. on super saturday, you saw the ted cruz got more delegates than donald trump. that is what would have to happen for it to be a contested delegate -- convention. they would have to be delegates

candidates not going to just one. we will have to watch the contest coming ahead. lastly, the staffer who set up hillary clinton's server while she was secretary of state, granted immunity this week. and the fbi investigation -- how serious is this for the campaign for hillary clinton's campaign? and what should voters think. >> it means the investigation is serious -- when you're granted immunity -- something you are really looking for and willing to trade away. perhaps any wrongdoing of an individual person to go for a bigger prize potentially. but that is all speculation. we don't really know. it means that the investigation is going forward. it is certainly making some democrats worried about how serious that investigation is. of course the clinton camp says this is good because immunity will get all the answers out and she will be vindicated. but it is still a huge question mark out there for her campaign. >> so much for you to get to.

thank you for checking in with us. you can catch john in a four- hour of face the nation this morning at 10:30 a.m. right here on cbs2. happening now, a community is gathering across the street from union city high school. >> that is near were two people were killed during an accident last night. we're live where they have gathered. what is the latest? >>reporter: andrea, this crash happened at jfk boulevard and 26 -- where a car jumped the curb. you can see where the fence is broken and debris is scattered across the property from the impact. we want to show you the scene out here this morning. take a look. dozens of the victim's friends are gathered. we saw them breaking down in tears and lighting candles. they tell us two boys, 16 and 17 years old, were killed out here when a car lost control. they say the victims were on the sidewalk heading home around 9:00 last night when they were struck. at this point, their names are not being released. we can tell you they were students at union city high

street from where they were hit. the victim's friends say the driver was taken into custody. we asked police about this. it is something they will not confirm. they are not releasing any details but tell us they could have more information and the we will let you know what they have to say. live in union city, new jersey, cbs2 news. students in westchester county are mourning the loss of crash. students placed flowers at the entrance to john f. kennedy catholic high school in honor of sister barbarba heil. she taught mathematics and latin at the school since it first opened in 1966. the 80-year-old was in a honda friday when state police say the driver of a suzuki crossed the centerline on route six and hit the vehicle had on. last night's students dedicated their musical production of "cinderella" in the memory of sister barbarba heil. she handstitched many of their costumes.

community is devastated by her loss. >> sister barbara -- you have to remember, just here at kennedy, was a woman of faith that influenced young people for 50 years. >> sister barbara's funeral will be thursday morning and white plains. police at long island's a burglar armed with a blowtorch was caught on camera breaking into a cell phone store. nassau county police say the man spent about one hour trying to burn a hole through the door of an at&t store. about -- the double panel metal prevented him from getting in. the nail salon next door. that didn't work either. but police say he did not give out. eventually he kicked in the window at the cell phone store. >> this is the most brazen act to get into a store that i have seen so far. the glass doors and the metal back. >> police say he made off cases. the attorney for the engineer in a deadly metro

client has retired with a disability pension. 48-year-old william rockefeller has not worked since this accident back in 2013. which killed four people. a tribunal found that he is no longer capable of doing the job. the national transportation safety board concluded that rockefeller suffered from sleep apnea. and fell asleep just before taking a 30 mile-per-hour curve at 82 miles per hour. it is a 10:00 a.m. a father and daughter survived what could have been a midair nightmare. >> your life flashing before your eyes. >> hear how some quick lives when their plane crashed . why was this never turned why? >> a former star witness speaks out about a knife reportedly found on a property one time lived on with o.j. simpson. we are at the carhart

they landed in the middle of the industrial park near marcus boulevard. a key player in the o.j. simpson case is sharing his thoughts about a knife found on the property. police sources told cbs the knife is not consistent with the murder weapon. that sends his houseguest, kato kaelin, says he is -- -- to say that he cannot believe they did not turn in this evidence. >> to think that somebody would want to keep something that is possibly the weapon used in this heinous crime -- why keep it? it doesn't make sense. >> we first heard about the knife on friday. it was finally turned into police last month. let's go over to vanessa murdock who is saying there are a few snow flurries but no major snow expected today. >> not at all. we're seeing now is pretty much what we are going to get. a few snowflakes.

temperatures are seasonable. we will go live outside to show you the proof that we are not saying much at all in the way of snow falling. from high on top the empire state building -- mostly cloudy. and 34. we have north, northeast wind at 6 miles per hour. your headlines -- a few passing flakes for some of us. not all of us. it will be a seasonable sunday with highs in the mid-40s. and then the big warm up is on the way. we're talking highs of 70, by midweek. of course, a little snow out there this morning. we can have snow as late as may -- does with -- that is what the record books show. let's look at what has gone down so far this winter. normal value -- about 22 inches. last year, we had almost 46 inches of snow for the season. this year, almost 32 inches. certainly above the norm. but below last year. really, it came in one day -- most of that -- with just

bradley doyley was pledging with the fraternity at the time. toxicology results that could answer certain key questions about what happened are not back yet. the fraternity has been suspended. counselors will be on hand today at a new jersey high school after the death of a student. sixteen-year-old conor barbero died friday night after crashing his atv. a small memorial of balloons and flowers has been set up to honor the belvedere high school junior who played basketball and soccer. today beginning at 10:00 a.m. police have released surveillance video of a man who they say tried to shoot a crown heights woman while she was with her children. nypd says just after 4:00 in the afternoon yesterday, the woman was walking up the stairs of her apartment building with her two kids when the man try to shooter. police say the gun actually jammed and the woman and the kids ran into the apartment and locked the door. investigators say the man then

luckily nobody was hurt. the clock is ticking on a possible new jersey transit strike. yesterday, hundreds of workers who said they went without a contract or a race for the last five years demanded change. >> hundreds of people packed a park across from the woodbridge train station as the march 13 strike deadline looms. the strike would impact more than 100,000 commuters. some state leaders are asking for governor chris christie, who recently ended his bid for president -- but now campaigning for donald trump, to step up. >> it is absolutely amazing that he continues to refuse to do the work that ordinary new jersey residents expect him to do. >> we reached out to governor christie's office yesterday but new jersey transit and the unions met with the national mediation board in washington on friday.

if it is something that will improve the job you are already in, then it would be deductible. like most things in the tax world, no simple answer. >> somebody else asked -- i mother's death. how is that text? >> i love this question. it gives me a chance to say two entire world. say it with me. tax-free. >> i like that. lot of those times when it does not apply. >> life-insurance is one of the best. if you get a life insurance policy -- a lot of times, we have clients come into the office and will have a large check for life insurance -- what do i do with this? they put it in the bank. and we tell them -- it is okay. >> when you're getting it -- you obviously going through such a hard time. and you don't want to have to worry about something else on

on the flipside, lottery winnings. people always wonder what to do with those in terms of taxes. and then what happens with gambling losses as well? >> a lot of questions about that. the winnings of course are going to be included with income. the losses, can only be detected to the extent of your gambling winnings. if you bought a lot of lottery tickets -- let's say you bought 1000 lottery tickets that were $2 a piece, you could take the $2000 off of your $1 billion winnings. so that is not accounted for too much. >> we see a lot of these gofundme account. people set them up to help someone in need like with medical expenses. is that donated money taxable? >> it really depends. this is a great question. a lot of times -- technology outpaces congress. congress is very slow to act in many ways. they really set the loss. this is an area of the law that is really up to a lot of questions. there was a situation last year where a young girl who needed medical care -- they set up a gofundme page.

generally, -- if you look at the gofundme page, it will say, typically, it is a gift. and gifts are not taxable to the recipient. however, the irs had this poor girl with a -- taxon $50,000. they said she owed about $18,000 -- in that range -- taxes and penalties. we don't know. it will go to court. this is an area of the law that will evolve in the court. and at some point, congress will probably catch up and make some definitive guidance. but really don't know right now. >> sometimes you see energy efficient appliances -- some people say you can write those off. how true is that? and which ones can you and can you not right off. >> it used to be more flexible. years ago, if you bought a toaster that was energy efficient, you might be able to write that up. today, it is more about making your home energy efficient. it is more geared toward things like -- -- if you put solar panels on your roof or a special tax credit for geothermal heating. and all that fun stuff.

appliances will help lower your electric bill but not necessarily your tax bill. if you get a new boiler or whatnot, that is possible. really so client -- if you would or something like that, bring it to the office. let us make that decision. don't you decide. chances are, you might miss something. it is always easier for us to pull something out that we don't need then it is for us to add something. >> because you don't know what you can write off and all of the expenses. >> exactly. >> we have gotten a lot of questions related to child care. some of them have to do with adoption. we have one about surrogacy -- that the surrogate is pregnant -- which expenses you can deduct. what kind of like can you shed in terms of people adopting are having a child three star get? >> for adoption, there is a special credit. up to about $13,000. it is a little more than that. that can eliminate up to about $70,000 of taxable income in some cases. very powerful credit. generally, anything you do toward making that child your
