left cheek after being slashed sunday morning. a few feet away from her home on 36th street. she was heading to church when she was approached by dylan. the worst of the injuries, a gash 1.5 inches wide at the back of her skull. her daughter translated her words. >> she didn't notice she got cut her. she noticed when she was stabbed in the back of her head. when she saw the blood, he also saw the blood at the same time and he ran away. >> reporter: 23-year-old james dylan was reportedly off his psychiatric medication during the ordeal. neighbors say he was unstable and aggressive. >> i told my son, stay away. there's going to be trouble because he acted crazy. >> reporter: four hours later, police say dylan continued his violent spree. a 55-year-old was killed when he was slashed inside the liquor store he owned. >> it could happen to anybody anywhere. just awful. yeah.

here forever. >> reporter: police say a 61- year-old homeless man was inside the store and doused with a flammable liquid and set on fire. the victim is listed in stable condition. two hours later, police got a call to an apartment on 42nd street and newtown road. a woman reported a man was trying to break into her home and climbed down her firest scape. by 5:45, dylan surrounded by police near his home. nypd says he held a knife in one hand and a beer bottle filled with accelerant with another, dousing the officers, burning the suspect. >> the officers then discharged suspect. >> reporter: james patrick stable condition. him. cbs 2 news. two communities are in mourning after two new jersey teens were killed by a car that slammed into them.

janelle burrell is live at the crash site. >> reporter: well, mary the accident happened just across the street from union city high school where one of the teens was a student. and this afternoon, you can see a lot of the classmates gathering at the sidewalk memorial to pay their respects. it's just feet away from the trail of debris. you can see parts of the car still here on the ground along with broken and mangled parts of the fence where those best friends were killed. a scene no teenager can ever be prepared for, visiting the place where not one but the lives of two close friends were lost in an instant. >> it's taking a big toll on all of us. these two kids are like brothers to us. >> reporter: a friend of the 16- year-old, an eighth grader, and two 17-year-olds. among the many classmates visiting the crash site monday

scott rapoport is live with the story. scott -- >> reporter: yeah, a sad and somber service for david hoffer, a man described by friends today as a great cop. at st. patrick's cathedral, more than 500 nypd officers along with cops from around the country honoring the life and memory of the former nypd cop david hoffer who spent five years with the department before taking a job with the police department in texas. shot and killed last tuesday while on duty, responding to a call of possible gunfire at a park near dallas. he was a new yorker. we're told he graduated from st. ann's high school in brooklyn and later nyu in 2009 and went on to the nypd where he was assigned to 29th precinct in the east village. he left for texas in 2014. he was engaged to be married. his death inspiring a huge
