here on high street, in the city of orange. now, we spoke to a family friend who says 10 people were asleep when the fire broke out around 5:00 a.m. this morning. now, behind me, you can see the home is being bulldozed as we speak. and earlier, the fire department held everyone back. the structure was completely charred. and unsteady. the floors had collapsed into the basement. the fire had jumped to the neighbor's house. you can see the siding completely charred as well. we are told three were trapped inside. two young boys. ages two and eight. as well as their uncle, who is in his 50s and lived on the third floor. their grandmother, we are told, suffered severe burns. now, the family has been standing across the street, watching this, as the bulldozer has come in and ripped their home apart. all very much upset. we will have another update, coming to you later on, after we talk to essex county prosecutor's office. for now, we are live in the city of orange, meg baker, cbs 2 news. a water main break in

the street and a car nearly under ground. crews at this hour still working to make repairs. janelle burrell has more from hoboken for us this morning. >> reporter: chris, certainly a rough morning for the owners of that car. you can see, actually, see them here behind us, on first street, talking with some of the crew members, here, from suez water, as they wait to make repairs to the water main break, this is just the latest in what has become routine for many residents here. there is no way phil snyder and his girlfriend could ever have imagined starting off their workweek like this. it took several reinforced straps and a backhoe to finally pluck their car above ground. >> look outside, and saw the street was flooded and only took a few seconds to figure was going off. >> reporter: the monday went from bad to horrible, this is the car a half hour later. almost half of it underneath first street, outside of their hoboken apartment.

is what it is. >> reporter: the aging infrastructure, some of it nearly 100 years old, partly to blame. today's break in the 12-inch main underneath snyder's car on first street near willow avenue left several inches of water flooding their neighborhood. forcing residents like andrew o'donnell to tap into his high school track skills to get to work. >> i was not about to go five floors back upstairs to get my boots on. >> as crews worked to reach the break, others had no water to get ready. >> it was face wipes. that's it. >> oh, boy. >> really not much hope. >> i got stuff to stay at a hotel tonight if i have to. >> i'm frustrated by this happening again and again in this town. >> a lot of residents have been expressing frustration in this community. specifically just because of so many water main breaks over the last several weeks and months. >> what would you say to them?

officials, because what we need to do is fix the infrastructure, so that we can hopefully get a good handle on the main breaks. but until that happens, we will have to monitor the situation and fix them as needed. >> an answer that does little for snyder as he figures out getting a replacement. >> i called the insurance company and let them know, so just go through the motions and wait and see what happens. >> reporter: back live, you can see phil snyder, they are waiting for word about his car, as to what is next. we reached out to hoboken city officials, they say about 20 years ago, they entered into an agreement with the company that is now suez water. they say that that deal only allots $350,000 a year for repairs to water main breaks. city. it is not nearly enough to make a huge overhaul repair. they say at this point they are working at renegotiating that contract, or putting it up for a bit. reporting live in afternoon, in

>> thank you. rain is still coming down across parts of our area. up? >> john elliott with a first look at the forecast this noon. hi, john. mary. it is really a raw day today, here is the shot in the city. and drops on the lens, you bet. we have light rain in the park. and park right now, 0.13. inch. and parts of south jersey over an inch, winds out of east, another part of the equation. and it keeps the temperatures cool. numbers hovering in the low 40s. here is the rain right here, through parts of middlesex, monmouth county, and this line holds together and pushes through the island. watch what happens between now and say afternoon commute time. these showers will continue, evening hours. and we are still dealing with some leftover light rain and fog, to start your day tomorrow. cloudy and warmer for your tuesday. a few more chances for rain on this saint patrick's day week. we will talk more about that in a bit. right now we will send things back to mary. >> john, thank you.

city this morning. now the hunt is on for a gunman who shot and killed a woman and flying glass. cbs 2 scott rapaport joins us live from the scene with much more on this story. what are the details here, scott? >> reporter: neighbors here describe a disturbing scene this morning. punctuated by gunfire and violence. shell casings shattered windows and a large police presence here on monitor street off of johnston avenue in jersey city this morning. neighbors here shocked as they awoke to chaos. and saw a woman on the pavement. >> i heard the gunshots. and i saw her bleeding on the that's what i saw. >> how many gunshots? >> it had to be at least six, seven gunshots. >> authorities tell cbs 2 news the woman was shot, the result domestic dispute. they say the victim was in a car with her assailant. then she got out to leave. and that's when the shooting started. it all.

girl and he is shooting from the back. like five gunshots. >> she was gasping for air. she didn't -- there was really no movement. when the police officer came, he moved her, he saw that she was breathing but after that, she was lifeless. a pool of blood laying there. >> reporter: authorities say a second woman was cut by shattered glass. witnesses say they saw a white scene. following the shooting. they described the shooter as wearing a white t-shirt and jeans. the shooter we are told is still out there. in the wind. we're live in jersey city scott rapaport, cbs 2 news. a shocking video of a man firing a gun in broad daylight. surveillance video shows the man opening fire on a sidewalk in the bronx. it happened yesterday afternoon on boston road in catona park east. thankfully no one was hurt. police are searching for the gunman and what they call a wreckless endangerment incident.

since a tugboat crashed into a barge under the tappan zee bridge. the search is over. and now, it is a recovery mission. the bodies of two workers have been pulled from the river. one crew member remains missing. cbs 2 magdalena doris has more. >> reporter: a dreary afternoon on the hudson river. 40 feet under the water's surface lies a 90-foot tugboat named specialist. leaking fuel. state environmental crews say it spilled over 5,000 gallons of diesel oil into the water. >> we are trying to contain the leakage. they have about 3,000 feet of booms put across the river at croton and about 9,000 feet near peermont. >> two days after the boat crashed into a stationary construction barge under the tappan zee bridge, the work operation. off. still missing is 56-year-old island. he was working on board the

when it crashed. two other crew members died on board as well. 62-year-old paul amon of new jersey. he was found soon after the crash. the body of 29-year-old timothy conklin of westbri long island was recovered sunday morning by search divers. the crew part of a three boat operation traveling south, was escorting a barge carrying a crane. when the operation started to drift near the stationary construction barge, under the tappan zee bridge. >> there are reports that there were radio transmissions from the tug on the right that said we are too close. we have to move left. but they couldn't move in time. >> was there enough lighting? how familiar were they with this part of the hudson river? >> the boat sank in moments. the impact causing severe damage. now, the wreckage is deemed too dangerous for divers to risk going inside. >> officials say a private

crews access the damage. it has -- or assess the damage, rather. it happened just after midnight. 142 people on board the train headed from los angeles, when the seven cars derailed. five toppled over, forcing some passengers to climb out of the overturned cars. the presidential candidates are hitting the campaign trail hard today ahead of tomorrow's key primary battles. five states, florida, ohio, north carolina, missouri, and tuesday. but casting a long shadow over the campaign are the violent clashes over the weekend at donald trump's rallies. from miami. >> reporter: marco rubio reached out to voters in florida monday morning, blaming donald trump for dividing the nation, in the wake of violent the weekend. >> we cannot have a country where everybody hates each other. >> reporter: late sunday night, trump defended how he dealt with the clashes. >> they are talking about us, and they are talking about how

>> reporter: the latest polls shows him falling to third in florida. >> the way to beat donald trump is beat him at the ballot box. >> a dead heat in ohio with john kasich, trying to win his home state. >> this country is not about us tearing one another down. or having fistfights at a campaign rally. >> reporter: trump canceled an event here in florida, to campaign in ohio, where the 66 delegates. on cbs this morning, a republican pollster said the unrest at trump rallies is scary. >> if we don't do something about it, it is going to get even worse. >> reporter: democratic candidates hillary clinton and bernie sanders also took aim at trump at a town hall sunday evening. >> donald trump is literally inciting violence. >> he is trafficking in hate. >> reporter: polls show clinton leading in florida and ohio.

don champion, cbs news, miami. 358, g.o.p. delegates are up for grab, and 691 democratic delegates are on the line tomorrow. and an investigation is under way in maryland, after an officer was shot and killed during an apparent attack on a police station. a moment of silence was held last night, for 28-year-old jakai ologisten, a four year veteran of the prince george's county police department. police say he was killed during a gun battle outside of the station in landover, a suburb of washington, d.c. police say they have two suspects in custody. one of them was wounded in the attack but is expected to survive. a wild police chase in los angeles, involving a stolen police car. the chase went through highways and local streets, sometimes up to 100 miles an hour. it came to an end when the suspect pulled into a parking lot in glendale. the driver was not giving up. even when police rammed the car once, he tried to escape again. that is when police made their move.

a survivor of a nazi concentration camp is named the world's oldest man by the guinness book of world records. israel kristol is 112 years old, born in bold in 1903 and now lives in israel. he was presented with a certificate from the folks at guinness, he admits he doesn't know the secret of a long life and says he is determined, as he puts it from above. richard simmens is speaking out about why he has not been seen in public in more than two years. >> for the last 40 years, i have been traveling, teaching classes, and i had a knee injury, so i had a knee replacement. which was very difficult for me. and now, my other knee is hurting. and i don't want to have another replacement. so i just really have been taking it easy. >> speaking to entertainment tonight, simmons dismissed reports that he was held against his will. the 68-year-old exercise guru says he still keeps in shape and is healthy despite speculation that he has been

unclog the gutter again. a lot of rain. we are looking at likely well over an inch for parts of ocean county. in fact there they are already flirting with an inch. some issues with making sure that gutter is clean there. and so many nice scenes of spring, flowers, kitties and that's tony with another weather watcher, they are teaming up on me. that is great. here is the deal for you. wind and rain to deal with. the cool temperatures, in the city, skies are gray. it is light rain for the most part. but parts of the area, some heavier rain, and east wind, to 18 miles an hour. and that's the park, stronger wind for the airport. 39 in the hamptons. a few readings in the 30s. a lot of folks in the 40s. everybody is cooler than they were this time yesterday. 15 to 20 degrees cooler. so you've got that. you've got the gusty winds, too, that is the park. but i know jfk and laguardia both are over 30 miles an hour. wind out of east and it is a moisture-rich wind and a cool breeze as well.

we have been slowly retreating all afternoon. the other fine print here, remember that change in time. you know it by now. and you're thinking why are they on at 11:00 if not. right? no, we would be on at 1:00. deficit, 1.36 below, as far as rain goes, and guess what, we will make up on that. a break in parts of the hudson valley. and parts of the area, heavier rain, and edison through moore monmouth and ocean. this line holds together. islip to sayreville and brook haven, you will be seeing some of that. a big area of low pressure. with a blocking high. around. time. now, the numbers are up a bit. a little over a half inch likely in the city. of rain. so this is through tomorrow morning. with some fog in the mix. wednesday is warmer. patrick's day. >> yes.
