significant now, 20 degrees c older in new york city than yesterday at this point in time. toms river still taking the c ake, 23 degrees colder right now. on the vortex satellite and radar picture, we have clouds on the east end of long island right now and coastal new jersey. but what is going to happen today, a bright, beautiful day, high pressure will build in. we are anticipating mostly sunny skies with temperatures warming into the low and mid- 50s for most of us. but on the east end of long island, you can anticipate cooler temperatures there, more likely in the mid- and upper 40s. coming up in the full forecast, we will talk easter sunday and another look at some nearly 70- degree warmth. back to you. all right. well, new this morning, the nypd is investigating another slashing in the city. police say a 19-year-old was attacked by a group of men on the upper west side. with more. >> reporter: well, it happened

right by the subway. it's on west 96th street and broadway. just after midnight, a 19-year- old man was walking h ere. he was a -- he was approached by four people he did not know who tried to rob him of his cellphone. he was slashed across the head, hands and is back. this comes after the nypd police commissioner and mayor have announced that they are taking new strides in stopping s lashings that are popping up across the city. this attack is reminiscent of what they are seeing going on here. this is following a pattern. >> our analysis so far has shown that there's a number of slashings and stabbings and about one-fifth occur late on friday night into saturday m orning and saturday night into sunday mornings.

to 4:00 a.m. on friday and saturdays. >> reporter: more patrols will head out around neighborhoods where slashings are on the rise. and police will be patrolling around nightclubs and bars, a reas where the slashings happen during the overnight hours. in this case, police are still in this slashing. live on the upper west side, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. now also new this morning, firefighters battled a raging fire in hamilton heights overnight. the flames broke out just after midnight on 151st street and broadway. two firefighters and two residentses were hurt including one man who was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. officials say the fire was located between sixth floor and the roof of the building. the fire is now under control but no word on the cause. security officials are conducting raids throughout brussels linked to this week's bombings, including a suspected new plot in france. >> on belgium's last official day of mourn, thousands of

raise the national flag and release balloons. secretary of state john kerry paid his respects and laid a wreath at the airport. >> during a raid yesterday, police shot a man in the leg who they say was carrying a suspicious package at a brussels tram spot. now they are searching for more suspects. >> reporter: as the days pass, the memorial for the more than 30 people killed grows and belgians struggle to get back to normal. >> better day after day. >> reporter: an arrest in france has led to raids throughout brussels. french police stopped a potential disaster when they arrested reda kriket. he was allegedly in the advanced stages of planning another attack. raids have netted six suspects including this man on friday. he was found at a train station with a suspicious package, snot the leg and arrested. still more suspects are a t-

officials say he played a key role in the attacks. his dna was found in one of the bomb-making factories in b elgium. two men in the airport are out there as well. they were last seen standing along side the isis attackers before the explosions. america has made some strides against isis. the group that claimed responsibility for the attacks. an air strike over syria has killed a top official in the isis leadership. >> now we have taken out the leader who overcease all the funding for isil's operations. hurting their ability to pay fighters and hire recruits rose back in brussel, belgians are adjusting to a new outlook under a heightened terror alert. >> it can happen anywhere. and at any moment. >> and we just learned, belgium prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant.

highway leaves a teenage boy seriously hurt. >> scott rapoport spoke with the boy's father about their t errifying ride. >> reporter: the large gash in the seat of this sedan only begins to tell the story of the father and son's frightening brush with death. >> worst case scenario. we could have died. >> reporter: while driving on route 1, he noticed a large piece of metal just laying in the middle of the road. >> we couldn't avoid i. >> reporter: and ran over it at 55 miles per hour. >> i heard this loud sound. i thought my tire went flat but within a split second, i heard my son scream. >> reporter: he says the object pierced through the undercarriage of his car and ripped through the passenger seat where his 15-year-old son was sitting. and into his leg. >> it just pierced right

it has an 8-centimeter gash. >> reporter: eight pierce to be steel, welded together in an x three feet. he says he has no idea where the metal object came from but that he will never forget his son's pain and anguish. >> it was just a horrific scream. you don't want to see any children scream, especially your own. >> reporter: still, he tells me his son is going to be okay and that he is thankful. >> and i'm just blessed that going to go home. >> reporter: thankful that it wasn't any worse. scott rapoport, cbs 2 news. >> authorities say the object might have been a support beam for a truck's spare tire. the nypd confirms it is now reviewing an incident between police and a postal worker in brooklyn. cellphone video captured the confrontation between the 27- year-old glenn graves and four plained clothes officer. graves claims he was making deliveries when an unmarked police car nearly ran him over.

officers who stopped and d emanded identification. he ended up handcuffed and p laced in the back of the u nmarked police car. a daring brooklyn woman battled a burglar on a fire escape after he had broke into her apartment. she had just walked into her bedroom in williamsburg on wednesday when she saw a man halfway out the window and on the fire escape. the 27-year-old says she managed to wrestle her laptop out of his hands. >> i asked him, are you kidding me and he looked at me and smiled and froze. so in that moment, i thought, well, if he was dangerous, he should have done something. i don't think he expected me to reach forward because when i grabbed it, the hands let loose for a second. >> the burglar got away with her cellphone and jewelry. police are investigating if this is part of a bigger pattern involving 17 other break-ins since february. easter sunday is now just one day away.

now to campaign 2016. the battle for the republican presidential nomination is g rowing bitter and personal. a tabloid reported ted cruz cheated on his wife with multiple women. >> the texas senator claims rival donald trump planted that story to try and bring him down. >> reporter: as the knock heads in a political campaign, cruz verses trump is getting very, very personal. >> when he's scared and losing, his first and natural resort is to go to sleaze and slime. >> reporter: the texas senator

planting a story in "the national enquirer" which p ublished shocking claims that cruz has cheated on his wife with five different women. >> it is complete and utter l ies. it is a tabloid smear. and it is a smear that has come from donald trump and his henchmen. >> reporter: trump released a statement, quote, i had absolutely nothing to do with the story. while the magazine was right about o.j. simpson, john edwards and others, i certainly hope they are not right about lying ted cruz. complicating the story, one of the alleged cruz is katrina pierceson, a paid spokeswoman for the trump campaign. she called the claim false and stupidity. another woman alleged to be involved with cruz, amanda carpenter when a trump surrogate confronted her on cnn. >> ted cruz allegedly had affairs with five, including you have been named amanda. >> what is out there is tab the

close to the water and the winds are off the water. more like mid- and upper 40s for long island but elsewhere, low and mid-50s. seasonal for us, lots of sunshine today. and tomorrow, more cloud cover. but still looking dry for easter sunday. overall, i think it's a really nice weekend, of course you guys are going to be headed to the movie theatre, i know that they'll be making big bucks a9 the box office but overall, the weekend looks great. yesterday, it was a very warm 72 degrees. nearly 20 degrees above the normal. and now today, we're right back where we should be, 54 degrees the high. tomorrow, 55. for monday, 59. but i'm talking by about this coming thursday, back to nearly 70 degrees again. on the vortex satellite and radar picture, we see mainly clear skies. but note the clouds hugging the coastline. this is still a result of a front that's kind of lingering off the coast.

again, the clouds likely l ingering longer near the shoreline. as we look at the big picture, high pressure is the dominate feature in your weekend f orecast. winds out of the northeast. tomorrow more easterly and with the flow tomorrow, we will see an influx of clouds. and late sunday into monday, a storm system to the west right now does bring rain for the entirety of the day on monday. in fact, looks like the monday morning commute could be a messy one. and let's show you what it looks like hour-by-hour for today. lovely again, a few more clouds near the coast. 7:30 this even, skies are mostly clear and overnight, the clouds build back in. partly cloudy and then partly sunny by sunday morning for sunrise service. it will be chilly and partly cloudy. and then as we make our way into the afternoon, more sunshine for your easter sunday by afternoon. but on average, we're calling for a partly sunny end to the weekend. monday morning, 3:00 a.m., note the showers have begun.

in fact, it was cold this m orning. but nicely, temperatures are warming up with the sunrise. so seeing them climb. we're heading for the low and mid-50s for most of us today for eastern long island, you will probably be stuck in the mid- to upper 40s this afternoon. let's take a look. 41 in the city. 42 in islip. earlier this morning, that number was down below the 30- degree mark. 42 in bridgeport. warming things up this a fternoon. right now, a massive drop-off since yesterday morning at this time. 20 degrees colder right now in the city. 14 degrees colder in the h amptons. what happened yesterday, a cold front rolled through. cooler air moved in behind it so your week lend be significantly cooler than that 72-degree high of yesterday. on the vortex satellite and radar picture, beautiful, bright blue skies with more clouds east of the city. as you make your way through the day on the whole, we expect a mostly sunny start to the weekend.

afternoon. this afternoon, 54 with winds out of the northeast at about 5 to 15 miles per hour. coming up in the full forecast, of course, we will talk the forecast for easter sunday. and then we will talk about our next opportunity for 70-degree warm. back to you. >> sounds pretty good. all right. new this morning, the nypd is investigating another slashing here in the city. police say a 19-year-old was attacked by a group of men on the upper west side overnight. >> we are live from the scene with more. >> reporter: well, things are back to normal here at the 96th street station. as you can see, people are m oving in and out, able to get into the area. but here at the pedestrian walkway just after midnight, it was a scene of an attemped robbery and a slashing. a 19-year-old man was slashed in the head, hands and back while four people approached him.

for the four people who a roached the 19-year-old man and slashed him, police are still looking for them. on the upper west side, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. now a teenager shot in the head in east harlem is clinging to life this morning. family members identified the victim as a 16-year-old. he was shot yesterday afternoon near the johnson houses on 3rd avenue and 112th street. a relative said that he is a good kid. >> goes to school in harlem. and he was taking up like music and art and things like that. he liked to dance, and you know, he was into theater and stuff like that. just stop the violence. you know, senseless deaths. i mean, when you grow up, you realize that all this was nothing. and you're not letting yourself grow up. >> the teen underwent surgery last night. it's unknown if he was the intended target. police are searching for the gunman. a jetblue flight attendant

drugs will remain behind bars even though a brooklyn judge granted her bail. sketches showed her in court this week. tsa agents atlas international airport say they caught her with 70 poundsover cocaine in her carry-on bag last week. they say she took off running when she was stopped at a check point. she was later arrested here in new york. a judge in la wants her to stay in jail and appear at a hearing in california on april 7th. the victims of the deadly east village explosion are being remembered at a ceremony today. one year after the blast. two people were killed and three billings on 2nd avenue were leveled. the blast was blamed on the illegal tampering of a gas line. the city council is pushing legislation aimed at preventing another disaster. the counselwoman, a lead sponsor of the bill will be onhand when the ceremony gets

afternoon at east 7th street and 2nd avenue. good news for commuters, could be even better news for some homeowners. the port authority approved a project to the speed up the ride into the city for some new jersey transit commuters but it could increase the values of the homes in the area also. >> attention, customers. >> reporter: for thousands of new jersey transit commuters on the lines, a one-seat ride into manhattan has been nothing but a distant dream. but with the port authority v oting to move forward on the gateway project, it may finally become a reality in places. >> it's a great thing and it's long overdue. >> reporter: the estimated $20 billion project includes new rail tunnels under the hudson river to replace the tunnels damaged by superstorm sandy and a connection at penn station. because they would no longer have to transfer train, some

along the main lines could actually be in for a bonus because of the project. >> real estate prices will rise from this. >> reporter: he is the vice president at a mortgage company. he says a shorter commute is a major selling point for home b uyers. >> it's the most important t hing. i think you will see the closer they are to the city or the easier the commute to the city that the more they're willing to pay. >> reporter: and history backs that up. in 1996, when the new jersey transit started the midtown direct service, a regional plan association study showed homes within a half mile of the facted train station rose an average of $34,000. but homeowners and commuters have to be patient. the planning process will take another three years before construction on the new train tunnel can even begin. well speaking of commuting, we have an alert for you. the bayonne bridge will remain open throughout the holiday weekend. it's usually closed on weekends

diverted to the goethals. work crews are raising the bridge's roadways so bigger s hips can make their way t hrough. a long island man was about to retire to spend more time with his wife and 15 grandkids and then something unexpected happened. now in his 70s, he ended up getting re-elected to another term as a trustee in the v illage. he didn't even run for r e- election. his name was not on the ballot but he received so many write- in votes that he actually won an open seat. >> wow, that they thought highly enough to come out, vote and give me a vote of confidence that hey, we like you, we need you, we want you and you're serving the community. and i said, that's unbelievable. so i was shocked. >> now after more than a decade on the board of trustees there, he has a big decision to make, stay for another term or really retire. he has until april 30th to decide.

new video thoracic outlet morning shows a 7-year-old in a wheelchair getting slammed on to the floor of her school bus. she was on her way to school in kent, washington when the wheelchair tipped over. the video was taken earlier this year. the girl cannot speak for herself so at first her parent did say not realize how seriously she had been hurt. the school said it was a m istake. >> evidently we had a bus driver who was responsible for securing students in wheelchairs. and just did not approximately secure that student. >> unlike my son who can walk and talk, she is 100% v ulnerable. it's like i'm handing them an infant. >> her mom says the district has repeatedly failed to protect her daughter and provide her with a proper education. an alert for homeowners after animal control officers there capture a rapid raccoon.
