>> reporter: good morning, and happy easter. guys. the doors to st. patrick's cathedral are open. the first mass of eight masses that are being held here today is about to begin. this is the time for christians around the world to reflect on the resurrection and rebirth. >> [ singing ]. >> reporter: it is easter in rome. today marks the end of a 40-day lent period of reflection and around the world it's a time for celebration and family. thousands gathered in st. peter's square this morning to celebrate the holiest day of the year for christians and to pray together. pope francis celebrating mass and calling on christians to find hope. his homily urging the faithful to open their hearts and be joyful, saying, in part, let us not stay imprisoned within ourselves and break open our sealed tombs to the lord so he

on the evening of holy saturday came the easter vigil in rome. paraphernalia entering the st. peter's basilica in darkness. the lighting of the pascal candle represents the light of jesus' life. that radiance carried into the church by pope francis and solemn prayer and mourning the three days after death, marking his resurrection. here at home timothy cardinal dolan led a mass at st. peter's cathedral speaking about what is at the heart of this easter celebration. >> let us listen with quiet hearts to the holy word of god. let us meditate on how god in times past saved his people. >> reporter: he then blessed easter baskets filled with food for the celebration. around the world this morning christians will congregate to reflect on sacrifice, forgiveness and rebirth while celebrating the resurrection of jesus christ.

and today is also about family and fun and fashion. later on this morning into this afternoon there will be the easter bonnet parade here on 5th avenue. so we're looking forward to seeing how creative people get out here as well. live in front of st. patrick's cathedral. breaking news in queens this morning where an elderly man has died after a fire ripped through a home in jackson heights. the fire broke out around 4:00 this morning on the first floor of the home. police say the 88-year-old man lived in the multi story house. two firefighters were treated for minor injuries. it's unclear what caused the fire or if anyone else was inside the home. a new jersey family in mourning this easter after two grandparents are killed in a horrific head-on crash. police say it happened as the

egg -- leaving a easter egg hunt. >> i couldn't believe it that two such good people on good friday. >> reporter: friends stunned by what happened to frank and audrey corso on route 53. these photos show the devastating scene. firefighters frantically running to help after a deadly head-on crash. >> i saw the accident in the road right in front of the house. it was bad. i could tell by the white car. >> reporter: the corsos, in their 70s, died standly -- instantly. they had taken their son and two grandchildren to an easter egg hunt nearby and were headed home. >> they were so nice to everybody. i would see them walking all the time. you know, they -- seeing their family over there. >> reporter: the county prosecutors says 23 frank cabezas was drunk at 2:45 in the afternoon. lost control and slammed into the corso family's car.

arisotto a corso was flown by helicopter to children's hospital in new brunswick with a badly broken leg. amazingly, her dad and five-year-old brother were not seriously hurt. the thought of an easter holiday outing turning tragic is hard to fathom. >> i feel horrible for those kids to witness their grandparents getting killed in the car. >> reporter: cabezas wasn't injured, but police sources confirm this isn't his first time in trouble. he was busted for allegedly driving drunk in his underwear in 2012 and hit with drug charges in the past as well. >> cabezas is facing charges including dui, reckless driving and death by auto. police are having another deadly crash in the bronx where a save tahoe slammed into a dry cleaners. this happened around 9:30 last night on allerton and barnes avenue in the allerton section. police say the 37-year-old driver hit two parked cars and then struck a light pole before crashing into the store.

faisal shea few is also the mystery man in surveillance video with the two airport suicide bombers. there is a heavy law enforcement presence here at brussels airport, which has been closed since tuesday's bombings. authorities say they have finished investigating the crime scene inside and now engineers are looking at the damage. >> we also have to look at security measures because security levels have rosen in our country. >> reporter: the solidarity march has been postponed following security concerns that the police department is stretched too thin. still hundreds of people returned to the growing memorial saturday to share their grief and sadness. kenneth craig. coming up on "face the nation," john dickerson will be talking about the attacks with secretary of state john kerry

campaign 2016. it was a saturday sweep for senator bernie sanders. he scored huge victories over former secretary of state hillary clinton in three state caucuses. >> in hawaii he snagged 71% of the votes. 25 delegates at stake there. the biggest prize in washington state with 101 delegates and sanders defeated clinton 72-28. margin of victory was bigger in alaska. the vermont senator took 81% of the vote. >> what we are seeing and what momentum means is in state after state huge voter turn outs. >> huge. sanders trails clinton by 700

republicans don't head to the polls again until april 5 when wisconsin holds its primary for both parties. >> april 19 is new york's, which will be exciting this year. time now is 7:13. everyone has most -- most people have big easter plans today, heading outside. let's head over to vanessa murdock and see what the forecast has in store for all of us. >> i think if you look outside, right now you might be concerned for rain because it's looking bleak. but there is no rain in today's forecast. there is a chance for showers tonight. tomorrow is the rainy day. today looking decent. seasonal. we will be in the mid 50s for most. by the coast, though, especially the jersey shore, the northern tier of long island, it will be more like the 40s. the upper 40s because winds will be in off the water. let's show you what's happening right now. so, yes, a little bit grey to start things off.

we have got cloudy skies. 43. east-northeast winds at 8 miles per hour. your headlines. seasonallable easter. that means it will be in the low and mid 50s for the most part. rain to moving in overnight. we expect the brunt of the wet weather during that morning commute. it could be steady, heavy at times and another round as we get into the afternoon hours. right now, even though the clouds look bleak, we don't have any rain on the vortex satellite and radar picture. that's lovely to note. bigger picture is this. high pressure dominating over the great lakes region. low pressure the south. low pressure to the northwest. these two systems combine to bring us that wet weather forecast for your monday. hour by hour, here's what it looks like. looking good today except for we will see a little more sun in the afternoon. otherwise, plenty of clouds, a little sun, and overnight some showers. monday morning here it is 7 a.m. when the commute is getting

it could be pretty steady, even heavy in spots as you make that morning commute. but midday looks to be a little bit break and then around 3:00 it's that last push. after that skies are clearing. i think by your drive home there won't be any rain actually falling, but the roadways could certainly still be wet. overnight monday into tuesday skies will clear, but the winds will be picking up big time. we are talking wind gusts around 40 miles per hour. so let's take a look at these future wind gusts starting tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. not bad. between 10 rand 25 miles per hour roughly speaking. then as we head into the evening on monday look what happens. the storm is strengthening and with that winds will be gusting up to 35, 36 miles an hour in the city. you get the point. windy late tomorrow. the winds persist into tuesday morning. that tuesday morning commute you could have some wind restrictions on some of those bridges as a result of the gusty conditions. but for today none of that. morning clouds.

and a high of 55. cooler by the coast. expect it to be like 40s. a chances for showers late and steadier rain as you make the morning commute with more showers in the afternoon. 59 is your high tomorrow. i would not be surprised to see some low 60s out there. it's possible. and then those winds pick up late. they will be gusting as high as 40. your extended forecast now. tuesday still windy out there and 54 but beautifully bright. wednesday 56 and sunny. the winds have settled. thursday and friday temperatures are climbing again. i think we will be pushing 70 on thursday. late in the day into friday does look like we will be dealing with wet weather courtesy of a cold front. you know what? that cold front and another cold front moving through saturday is going to put us in a position for highs only in the 30s and low 40s as it looks right now. sunday, monday maybe even tuesday. >> a week from today? >> a week from today. >> okay.

reason you can't shed those unwanted pounds. our spring cleaning series continues this morning with registered dietician and nutritionist willow gerouch. talking about spring cleaning in the kitchen, where do you begin in. >> it's interesting because the more clutter you have in the kitchen, the less likely you are to actually make what you intend to make because you are digging through a lot of other stuff. the organization really starts with getting rid of the stuff that you're not using. cleaning it up and reorganizing. >> okay. take us through that. >> this would be the refrigerator section. get rid of what you are not using and clean it. i like to use all natural cleaning products. baking soda. vinegar. a rag works fine to wipe out the fridge. go for the condiments.

used for a recipe four years ago. if you have two peanut butters, consolidate into one jar. >> how long can you usually keep condiments for? >> just check them. if you are using them on a regular basis, they usually get used up before the expiration date. if you have ones looking old, toss them. you are not going to use them any way. >> of course, fruits and vegetables. >> if you put fruits and veggies and hummus and things on the top shelf. so right when you open the trench those are the things that look you in the eye, you will grab them more often. snacky stuffs like grape -- >> healthy snacks? >> yes, they should go on the top drawer. when it comes to herbs, a lot of times when your fridge is messy, produce gets wasted. fruits and veggies get old and it's a waste of money and a waste of food and you are not eating them. store them like a bouquet of

they last so much longer. if your fridge isn't cluttered you will definitely see those fresh fruits and veggies too. >> okay. now we are switching in the pantry. where do you start with that. >> clean everything out. give it a good scrub. and then look at things that might be a little bit too old or things that you just haven't used and spices are a great place to start. about a year is how long spices retain their ultimate flavor. after that they lose that flavor and they are just not that good any more. toss spices that are over a year old and toss spices that you just don't use. then when you reorganize the pantry, a lot of times it's tempting to put all like things together. and i think for efficiency, pair things the way that you use them. if you use pasta with marinara cause and chickpeas, pair that

salad dressing, olive oil can be paired together. oats in the morning with dried oughts it and go. >> what about utensils? >> utensils can be a great thing to help making cooking at home more efficient or they can crowd your kitchen and make it impossible to find what you are looking for. i say pair it down to a few garage et cetera that make healthy eating easier. i love the julian peelers. a simple greater. >> what are some items just in general to be healthy, what are some items you always have in your kitchen? >> canned beans are a great one. broth to make a quick super. marinara sauce for sure. and i love having herbs and spices around because it can jazz up the flavor of food that you cook at home and make it seem more like the stuff that you would be getting when you

remember the victims of a deadly explosion in the east village. yesterday marked one year since the devastating blast. cbs2's dave carlin reports. >> reporter: one year after the explosion this fire caught on cell phone video brought horror and death to 2nd avenue in the east village. this empty lot where three buildings stood becomes a place of candlelight and prayer. photos of the two men who lost their lives 27-year-old. here is figueroa's mother afa. >> some say that a loss gets easier with time. nothing could be further from the truth. >> reporter: 22 people were hurt. mildred guy lived on the fourth floor of the building where the gas line blast originated. she lost her home of 44 years. >> horrible. horrible. it shouldn't is have happened. >> reporter: four people were

manslaughter and other criminal charges. building's owner, her son, plus a contractor and a plumber allegedly tampered with the building's gas line and then failed to warn residents. the disaster that resulted is leading to new laws, including legislation to mandate more inspections of gas lines. >> these laws are in honor of nicholas and moises and the entire east village community. >> even a portion of this blast site could fetch $10 million if sold to developers. politicians say they want to make sure that the owners who were allegedly negligent do not benefit. >> because of his death and moises death can change this and make a difference. yes, nicholas would have been proud. >> reporter: families here were promised the city will crack down on landlords who, perhaps motivated by agreed, schemed to take deadly shortcuts. dave carlin, cbs2 news. new video. a man seen on surveillance video robbed a queens jewelry store at

it happened at adl jewelers on queens boulevard in sunny side on friday. the suspect demanded gold, diamonds and watches. he ran off with about $15,000 worth of valuables. no arrests made in the case. police in hoboken are investigating a slashing that happened and third and court streets. investigators have not released details on the victim or the suspect. in new york city the search continues for a group of men who slashed a teenager at a subway or the upper west side. investigators say the 19-year-old victim was waiting for a bus after midnight saturday when four men tried to rob him. they allegedly chased him to the pedestrian plaza subway station and slashed him. last week mayor de blasio said the city will respond aggressively to actions but some residents are asking when and where. >> i thought that there would be a larger police presence as we speak. i don't see any policemen.

>> we need it in our community. do you hear, mr. de blasio? >> the latest victim was treated at st. luke's hospital and released. two people hurt after a fire at a brooklyn apartment building t started before 1:00 yesterday afternoon on south 12th street in park slope. investigators say the flames began on the third floor and quickly spread to three other apartments in the building. one firefighter and 110 ent were hospitalized with minor injuries. no word what started the sneer a taxpayers are getting phone money. pay up, there will be serious consequences. but it turns out it's actually impostors on the other end of the line. >> reporter: when she answered some shocking news. >> the irs is filing a lawsuit call this number. >> reporter: the call was a recorded message and went on to say. >> this will be an intentional

before a magistrate judge or grand jury for a federal criminal offense. >> it was scary. >> reporter: it was part of a scam. and durrant is one of thousands of startled taxpayers being targeted. >> why did the bank robber rob the banks? because that's where the money is. >> reporter: steve weismann says scam artists continue to pose as irs agents simply because they can. >> a lot of money in the irs. a reduced budget. the failure to take some basic security precautions by the irs. >> reporter: this year the irs says it's seeing a 400% spike in the number of computer-based attempts at scamming unsuspecting taxpayers. >> the irs is calling me? >> reporter: it's gotten so bad, the agency released this video warning. over the last two years it's estimated that more than $23 million has been lost to the fake phone call scam demanding back taxes. >> they will alter the phone number so the caller i.d. shows that they are calling from the

washington, d.c. >> reporter: johnny rosario with money gram says in most cases the criminals want the so- called payment wired. >> sending the money transfer is just like sending cash. >> reporter: and it cannot be retrieved. so now money gram is posting warnings in their stores and training agents to help customers recognize the signs of an irs scam. he says for starters, the irs only contacts taxpayers through the mail. >> . >> the irs will never call them over the phone to ask them to pay a debt and threaten them with jail time. only through the mail they contact you. >> well, you know, sometimes they will also leave a phone message on your machine. the irs -- >> the irs officially. >> but it's unbelievable because i have gotten those calls, too. anyway, time is 7:39. trouble on the tarmac for an american airlines pilot. egg hunt chaos. why parents are being blamed for ruining a day of fun for

work week comes to an end. the faa says an american airlines co-pilot may have been drunk when he arrived for his flight. he reportedly failed a breathalyzer test and was taken into custody. >> reporter: this image snapped by jamie blaine shows exactly what passengers witnessed at detroit metro airport. >> they had him handcuffed. >> reporter: she and her son were heading to a spring break trim trip. at first the flight was delayed by 20 minutes with airport officials say it was a problem with seating. >> they were stunned when they figured out what it was. >> reporter: by the time airport police arrived, jamie laughed at first. >> they go, oh, there is a police car. they are coming to get somebody. and then i looked out and saw him walking and i went, oh, they really are. >> reporter: turns out tsa reported the american airlines co-pilot was acting strangely as

police gave him a breathalyzer test, which he failed. the flight was then canceled, leaving passengers scrambling. >> when we got off the plane it seemed to be a lot of chaos and people trying to get answers and trying to change flights. we knew we were going to miss our connecting flight. >> reporter: american airlines tells us this is a serious matter and we are assisting local law enforcement and the federal aviation administration with the investigation. we will handle this matter appropriately as the safety and care of our customers and employees is our highest priority. some passengers say the thought of the pilot getting on the plane while drunk is terrifying. >> there is things, drunk drivers, they take the lives of a couple of people and make those mistakes. this is a drunk pilot. he could have taken the lives of hundreds of people. >> he failed a second breathalyzer test at the police

an easter egg hunt in connecticut, this happened at the pez visitor center outside of new haven. organizers say crowds of thousands stormed the field before they could officially start the event. the easter excitement got so bad some parents were knocking over little kids. some stole eggs out of people's baskets. >> my son left, he had a broken basket and was crying. >> it was like locusts. everybody descended and left. >> organizers say they tried to inform parents there was extra candy on hand for the kids who didn't get any. luckily, no one was hurt. >> lovely job. a lot of people are counting on a nice forecast today. lots of activities. traveling. vanessa murdock is here. what do you got? >> i think it's nice. it's not bright, but it is nice. it's not going to rain today. that's good news. it will be seasonal if the low and mid 50s for us. but certainly not as bright and beautiful as some might prefer

for showers after dark, but really the main event is tomorrow morning with some more showers lingering into the afternoon. so a morning commute that will be wet and then the winds tomorrow night will really be ramping up. we are talking gusts around 40 miles an hour. today anticipating a high of 55 degrees. normal high is 54. sunset tonight at 7:16. by then we should be seeing a little more sun. easter records look like this. the warmest was 96 degrees in 1976. to put that in perspective for you, with an average high of 54, that was more than 40 degrees above normal. that's incredible. the coldest 12 degrees back in 1923. the wettest over 2 inches of rain. that was back in 1958. and the snowiest 4 inches of snow fell on 1970. easter 1970. the vortex satellite and radar picture right now is looking pretty good. we have got those clouds overhead. thankfully, no rain is falling.

into tomorrow with two areas of low pressure that essentially join forces bringing us a best bet for rain early tomorrow morning with showers possible until roughly 3:00 in the afternoon. for today we are staying dry. the big old easter bunny is going to be hopping on out of here. tomorrow a soggy start. the morning commute will be impacted by rain. could be steady, even heavy at times. and then in the afternoon what happens is this cold front rolls on through and with that we get another round of showers, maybe a thunderstorm. after 3:00 tomorrow though skies look to be clearing. roadways for your evening commute tomorrow could be wet. for tuesday it's windy sunshine. again those winds will be cranking, gusts as high as 40 again on tuesday. monday night into tuesday getting windy. today 55. mainly cloudy early. sun later on. tomorrow 44-degree start with rain. by tomorrow afternoon showers and 59 degrees. some may hit the low 60s.
