acts rolling in. captioning funded by cbs it's monday, march 28th, 2016. this is the "cbs morning news." we are tracking the latest on the brussels terror attack. this morning, we know now four americans were killed in the bombings, while the painstaking task of identifying the dead continues. terrorists take aim at an easter celebration in pakistan, setting their sights on christian kid.

claiming responsibility for killing 65 people, with many children among the dead. campaign controversy. ted cruz doubles down on his plan to take on terrorism, with opponents on both the left and right blasting his push to monitor muslim neighborhoods. back from the dead on easter sunday! they are going to the final four! >> and the final four matchups are set. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news pheadquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the investigation into the brussels terrorist attack has expanded across europe, as has the crackdown on suspected terrorists. there have been arrests in belgium and netherlands and italy. now we know at least four americans were killed in the brussels attack. elaine cobb is in brussels with more.

>> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. two of the american victims have been identified. justin and stephanie shults were killed at the brussels airport and they are were dropping her her mother when the bombs went off. yesterday, the white house said president obama telephoned their parent to offer his condolences. at least a dozen americans were injured in last tuesday's attack. the attack was originally planned for today but was moved up following the capture of salah abdeslam, a suspect in the paris attack. over the weekend, isis released another video claiming responsibility for the brussels attack and the video claimed new threats against the belgium and europe europe. before you go, elaine, a lot of people are waiting to find out whether or not their loved ones are among those killed in

can you give us a sense of why it's so difficult for authorities to identify the victims? >> reporter: forensic spent have been working with teeth and dna samples provided by rests. they warned it would take several days. the belgian authorities said they don't want to release any names until they are absolutely sure. >> elaine cobb, thanks a lot. yesterday, police clashed with right wing demonstrators in brussels. kenneth craig has more on that and the investigation. >> reporter: good morning. for the first time since these attacks, we saw tensions here in brussels really come to a head, as angry demonstrators came face-to-face with authorities who have been criticized for not doing enough to prevent these attacks. dutch police arrested a frenchman in this rotterbam neighborhood for allegedly

belgian police carried out more than a dozen raids on sunday linked to terrorism but authorities did not say whether they were connected to last week's bombings. 31 people were killed and at least 270 others injured. at the memorial for the victims, police in riot gear used water cannons to push back angry demonstrators, including hundreds of right wing so-called hooligans. this woman broke down in tears as they trampled through a shrine. >> we have to unite and show we are against them. >> reporter: mourners in the crowd were visually shaken by their presence. >> they want to stop terrorism but not doing it the right way. >> reporter: a heavy military police is still presence in brussels after those violent clashes. authorities have also blocked off some of the city's streets. people have been coming here since last tuesday's attacks as a sign of solidarity and to pay their respects.

i'm from brussels. i will never be scared. never. >> reporter: on sunday, belgian's interior minister knitted that decades of neglect hurt the country's response to terrorism and the justice department and security forces are falling short. back to you. a faction of the taliban says it's responsible for an easter suicide bombing in pakistan that killed at least 65 people. many of the victims were children. another 300 were wounded in the eastern pakistani city of lahore. the bomb went off near children's rides and a park crowded with people celebrating easter. they say they targeted the christian school and schools and businesses in lahore are closed today. facebook apologized for a glitch that sent a safety check to users following the pakistan bombing. a safety check lets users to signal friends they are safe following an event like a bombing. yesterday's glitch sent the

if they were okay to users around the world. during his easter address, pope francis denounced terrorism and remembered victims of attacks in europe, africa, and elsewhere. tens of thousands packed st. peters square to hear the pope. in his speech he cited recent attacks in brussels and elsewhere. the race to the white house. bernie sanders his campaign is riding high after beating hillary clinton in three states over the weekend. meanwhile, the republicans are sparring over how to stop terrorism. don champion is here in new york. don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. foreign policy will likely be a dominant issue on the campaign trail this week as candidates focus their attention on the next big primary next tuesday. two republican contenders are also locked in a new battle over a state that already voted -- louisiana. donald trump is crying foul again. this time, threatening a lawsuit over ted cruz trying to grab delegates in louisiana.

hear he is trying to steal delegates. you know, welcome to the republican party. what is going on in the republican party is a disgrace. >> reporter: even though he narrowly lost to trump in the state, cruz's campaign has reportedly been trying to sway ten more delegates his way, including some from former presidential candidate marco rubio. on the campaign trail, cruz also faces more criticism for his proposal to patrol muslim neighborhoods in the wake of the brussels attacks, an idea he defended sunday. >> what that looks like is pro active law enforcement. what that looks like is addressing the problem and engaging the problem. >> reporter: rival john kasich called such a move a knee-jerk reaction. >> i don't know how you would do it and, secondly, we can't be out there aggravating the very people whose cooperation we need. >> reporter: on the democratic side, hillary clinton and bernie sanders have dismissed the proposal. this week, sanders will try to build on caucus victims in washington, alaska, and hawaii over the weekend.

well with young people and we are -- we think we do have a path toward victory. >> reporter: all of the candidates will campaign heavily in wisconsin this week, where voters will head to the polls next tuesday. on the democratic side, there is a lot of talk about the wide margin victories sanders claimed over the weekend. he still trails clinton about 700 in the overall count. his campaign is now pushing for another debate ahead of the new york primary in mid april. >> don champion here in new york, thank you, don. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk about this weekend's political battles with cbs news contributor peggy noonan. the north didn't say when the test took place but south korea says it was march 21st. this is the third time this year that the north has fired short-range projectiles into the sea. severe thunderstorms are

valley and into the upper midwest. scattered storms, including hail and heavy rain, are forecast, and winter weather advisories are in effect in oklahoma, missouri, and arkansas. a strong hail storm hit northeast indiana yesterday. large hail and dangerous winds hits hearts of the midwest. over the weekend, heavy wet snow fell in southern colorado and firefighters are still battling the biggest wildfire in kansas history. snow in the area hardest hit helped a little bit yesterday. more than 620 square miles have been burned in kansas and oklahoma. . coming up on the "morning news." a twist in a high-speed chase. california police box in a suspect, but the driver has another idea.

was disrupted saturday when a man screamed that his roommates were going to shoot him. responding officers found 45 pounds of marijuana and charged three suspects. "the washington post" reports the skalgscancellation of a flight. the airline is cooperating are investigators. the los angeles times reports a deal that would raise the california minimum wage to $15. they agreed on saturday to gradual increases. the $15 level would be released by 2022. "usa today" reports growing corporate opposition to a north carolina law. google, apple, and microsoft joined other firms.

the suicide bombers struck at a park where krivenschristians were celebrating easter. many of the victims were children. police in tampa are searching for suspects in a stunning theft at a car lot that involved nearly a dozen people and it was all caught on surveillance video. jericka duncan reports. >> reporter: two of the suspects entered the tampa dealership through a smashed window and seemed to know where with to look for the box of keys. moments later a group of eight young men waiting in the lock began unlocking vehicle doors. tampa police say the thieves got away with eight vehicles just after 7:00 friday morning. danny halina owns the dealership. >> when you realize eight cars have been stolen and another 12 have been damaged that are going to need some body work and repairs, that kind of, you know, puts you in a different perspective and makes you realize that anything is possible. >> reporter: it's similar to what happened earlier this month when ten criminals used a truck to rip off the doors of this

they busted through several glass cases and just two minutes, they stole 85 weapons. the national retail federation polled retailers around the country to gauge the impact of what is called multiple offender crimes. their most recent study found that nearly 8 out of 10 retailers report being a victim of that type of crime. suspects in only half of these cases were ever arrested. danny says police told him today they arrested one suspect and now have three of his cars, including one of his most expensive vehicles worth $27,000. >> hindsight is 20/20 but we have learned don't leave the keys on the location. >> reporter: the criminals walked away with all of the keys even the cars they did not take which means he has to replace those as well. jericka duncan, cbs news, new york. . coming up after your local
