the collision caused a derailment, injuring 30 passengers, and caused major delays. don championship it at the accident scene in chester, pennsylvania. don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and anne-marie. overnight we did see crews going in and around the derailment site behind me. right now the investigation centers around figuring why the two construction workers who were killed were on the track when the train came through. federal investigators continue to examine the heavily damaged front end of amtrak train 89 overnight, as they begin piecing together what led to sunday's deadly accident. >> we will be looking at mechanical operations, signal, track, human performance, and survival factors. >> reporter: the train was on its way from new york city to savannah, georgia, yesterday morning when it slammed into a

backhoe operator and a sproversupervisor. photos show heavy damage on the first car of the train. >> all you could see is a lot of dirt and debris flying past the train and there was a couple of sort of like fire flashes. >> i just called some of my church members and asked them to pray. >> reporter: among other things, investigators want to know why that heavy piece of equipment was even on the active track in the first place. >> sometimes, there is human error. sometimes, things happen. but there is virtually no excuse for a backhoe to be on an active track. >> reporter: sunday's accident comes less than a year after the derailment of the amtrak train 1888 ifn philadelphia which killed eight people. as part of the video are being reviewed. at last check last night, three of the passengers who were hurt were still in the hospital. it's not known if that number changed overnight. and, again, amtrak plans to

last night an amtrak train hit a man on the tracks north of philadelphia. it was unclear why he was on the tracks. police say he lost his leg as a result of the collision. yesterday afternoon, one person was killed when an amtrak train hit a vehicle on the tracks in northern illinois. there were 248 passengers on the amtrak train headed for california. none of them were injured. now to the weather. the calendar says it's spring, but for a lot of folks here in the northeast, it feels a lot like winter. this morning, a spring storm is bringing cold temperatures, snow, and gusty winds from the great lakes to the northeast. winter weather warnings are posted in new york, massachusetts, and vermont. the high today in boston is expected to be 33 degrees. 34 in providence. in massachusetts, about 20 miles southeast of boston, a man and a woman were killed when a rotted tree weakened by the storm fell on their car. in upstate new york, whiteout conditions blinded drivers, causing a 12-vehicle pileup.

and powerful winds to an area from the great lakes to the northeast. winds exceeded 50 miles per hour and some 40,000 customers remain without power. a new study confirms what millions of people taking statins have been complaining about for years. and it may offer a solution. jericka duncan has more. >> reporter: peggy o'connor who suffered a heart attack after years of battling high cholesterol had complained to her doctor about statins she had taking, drugs that can lower bad cholesterol. >> when i started on the statin, i started having muscle spasms. >> reporter: claims like that were initially dismissed by some in the medical community. dr. steven nissan is the lead researcher at the cleveland clinic study. >> we confirmed that this is a problem and it's real and we have given them an alternative. >> reporter: dr. nissan says problems, including muscle pain and weakness, affect up to 10%

million to 4 million americans. the study looked at more than 500 patients who reported side effects and considered statin intolerant. the patients in the study were given a statin or a sugar pill. about 42% who took a statin experienced muscle pain or weakness. the second part of the study involved testing nonstatin cholesterol loring drugs. one was an oral drug. the other, injectable. both worked, however the injectable had better results. >> patients that got one of the new injectable cholesterol loring drugs had 52% to 54% reduction in their cholesterol. it is about 14,000 a year, so they are quite expensive. >> reporter: the cost for statins is a few hundred dollars per yef. dr. nissan estimates 30 million
