some of the downed trees blocked roads hampering rescue operations but there are no reports of serious injuries. with the now important new york primary under two weeks away, both donald trump and hillary clinton are working to right the ship. both lost in wisconsin. trump is rejiggering his campaign, while clinton is taking a tougher approach to bernie sanders. a just released national poll finds sanders and clinton in a virtual tie and it's not just clinton who has ratcheted up the rhetoric. don championship is in new york. >> the fight between bernie sanders and hillary clinton continues escalating. riding a wave of momentum last night, bernie sanders questioned hillary clinton's readiness for office during a campaign stop in philadelphia. >> i don't think you are

the disastrous war in iraq. >> reporter: a clinton spokesman quickly responded online calling the attack a new low. the stakes are high for clinton as the presidential candidates focus on the new york primary on april 19th. wednesday, clinton sharpened her attacks on sander by questioning his gun control record and ideas. >> i am concerned that some of his idea just won't work because the numbers don't add up. >> reporter: on the republican side, donald trump is looking to rebound in his home state, after tuesday's loss to ted cruz in wisconsin. at a rally of long island, trump hit cruz for criticizing new york values and a past debate. >> i've got this guy standing over there looking at me, talking about new york values with hatred, with hatred of new york. >> reporter: outside people for and against trump rallied.

cruz questioned trump's leadership. >> donald has no solution to the problems we're facing. >> reporter: 95 delegates are on the line for republicans in the state. the new york papers can be notoriously brutal and ted cruz certainly feeling the sting with today's new york "daily news" cover. a story in the paper highlights how angry new yorkers in the bronx have shouted at cruz over his immigration policies. today, cruz will meet with former mayor rudy giuliani and community leaders in brooklyn. >> don champion here in new york for us, thank you. this morning, authorities in washington state are looking for two violent offenders who probing out of a mental hospital. the duo escaped wednesday night from the facility, possibly from a broken window in their room. officials say they are armed and dangerous. the suspect with dark hair was arrested for murder but found not competent to stand trial. the older man with blond hair was sent to the hospital for domestic violence.

says the solution the government required to hack into an iphone connected to the san bernardino shootings doesn't work on all iphones. comey says the solution is a narrow one and works only on the iphonec running the ios 9 program. he says the agency still hasn't decided to tell apple how it hacked into the phone. a 17-year-old texas girl is the 11th person known to have died due to a malfunctioning takata airbag. she was killed when a 2002 honda civic she was driving exploded. her car had been recalled 14 years ago. 14 automakers have recalled 24 cars and trucks in the u.s. because of the faulty airbags. this morning, whipping winds across the plains are fanning a

in woodward, county, firefighters are trying to beat back flames shooting as high as 100 feet. the fast moving wildfire is being fanned by wins topping 40 miles per hour. the oklahoma foresty service. >> this rain has not had a soaking rain in over a hundred days. the fuels combined with the moisture are calling very erratic fire behavior. >> reporter: tuesday, four separate fires sparked by arcing power lines downed by high winds raged in a blaze across 55,000 acres. kwtv were covering the fire when she spotted jason perks desperately trying to get his road grader out of a ditch. >> he needs to get out. >> i know! >> he can't get out. >> reporter: perks, a woods county conservation worker bailed from his vehicle when the crew drove over to rescue him. >> he ran out of the tractor.

came over and unlocked the door very quick and he jumped in and i slammed it in reverse and floored it into reverse. that's how fast those flames got to us. >> close call. firefighters are still working to determine how many homes have been destroyed. in the meantime, today's forecast calls for more high winds and hot, dry weather. some law professors say the new mississippi law allowing religious groups and others to deny service to gay and transgender people may be unconstitutional. it possibly violates the 14th amendment which requires equal protection under the law. executives at some major corporations, including ge, dow chemical, pepsi and hyatt hotels have signed a letter denouncing the law. paris attack suspect salah abdeslam appeared in a brussels court this morning. the hearing was to extend his arrest warrant. he is waiting for extradition from belgium to france.

for officials to capture him. the november attacks in paris killed 130 people. cypress agreed to extradite the suspect in last week's egypt air highjacking. none of the 72 passengers and crew on board were injured. panama is taking a close look at its offshore financial industry following the leak of millions of documents of offshore accounts used to evade taxes. offshore accounts can be used illegally to shelter or launder money. dozens of politicians and dozens of celebrities were named. the university of connecticut honored its championship women's basketball team. the huskies won their fourth consecutive national title

town where a gunman killed 20 teachers and students years ago. james adams was charged with gun possession on school ground. a felony. he has a permit for the weapon. he is suspended with pay. "the washington post" reports how a 9-year-old journalist answered those who criticized her for covering a suspected murder. hilde leeshack puts out pennsylvania. she says negative feedback won't stop her. >> some people are supporting me, but most were comments about how i would be, like, playing tea party or playing with dolls instead of, you know, reporting a murder. >> hilde gets help from her sister and her father, a former new york city journalist. "variety" reports that charlie sheen is being investigated by los angeles police. several reports say he is heard on a tape threatening to pay $20,000 to have his former fiancee killed.

more. >> reporter: it looks like the federal reserve is unlikely to raise interest rates this month. minutes from last month's policy meeting indicate that in light of a slowing floble economy, the fed board will continue to proceed cautiously. on wall street, stocks broke a two-day losing streak. the dow gained 112 points, the s&p rose 21, the nasdaq finished 76 points higher. the labor department is instituting new rules that should offer more protection for retirement savers. brokers must now act as fiduciaries, trustees who are obligated to put their best interests above all and that will likely change the types of investments brokers recommend for retirement funds. the new rules will be phased in starting a year from now. fiat-chrysler is laying off workers at a assembly plant. the workers will be let go for

a boston runner is gearing up for the race of a lifetime. adriane haslett was near the boston marathon finish line when the bombs went off in 2013. she lost her legs but not her drive. she will run the 22 miles next week the first time since the attack. she will have her prosthetic specialistist along the track for support. race. he is the reason i met him while still in stitches bog literally hospital. >> such an inspiration. haslett says she has no idea what to expect emotionally, but what.

team got a statement win last night in more ways than one. the stars and stripes took on columbia, getting the 6-0 victory. the win seemingly punctuated the team's off-field efforts last week. five of the most prominent members of the team filed a wage discrimination complaint against the u.s. soccer federation, fighting for equal pay. the women make substantially less than the men's team. a squad that historically unsuccessful compared to the women's achievements in monumental wins. well, the masters gets down to serious business today. but wednesday was all fun and games at the par 3 competition. teeing off on the 7th, 80-year-old gary player proved he still has got it making a hole in one. that made the sfrinouth africanic the oldest to hit a hole in one in masters history.

justin thomas backed up his tee shot into the hole for an ace. playing partner rickie fowler stepped up and matched thomas with an ace of his own right there. defending masters champ jordan spieth was at the hole and lost it. spieth begins today to defend his jacket today. jim nantz will be on "cbs this morning" talking spieth, bubba, and the rest of the field. cbs coverage of the masters tees off saturday with at 1:30 eastern. the only place to find the masters on sunday for the final round is here on cbs. i was out in the dining room, you know, meeting the residents and i had a gentleman stop me and ask me if i made his dinner.
