good afternoon i'm mary calvi. >> a minor accident turned into a mess. >> they closed lanes snarling traffic through jericho for hours. carolyn gusoff is there live with the very latest. carolyn? >> reporter: mary and dick, one man is dead, another man charged with dwi. police say that it all started with the risky decision by a driver. a driver on the led dead. hit by two vehicles. it began at 2:00 a.m. with the victim still unidentified.

then got out of the car to sure up the broken bumper. that they were struck by vehicle 2. both the vehicle and the occupant were pushed into the roadway. >> reporter: and then a third vehicle would strike the man dragging him nearly a mile. >> he made that choice to exit his vehicle and it was a very tragic chain of events. >> reporter: they closed the express way for six hours and a sad reminder says aaa that getting out of your car on the highway is never a good idea. too often fender benders turn fatal. >> they could have easily driven to the next exit to inspect the damage the highways, no place to be in the middle of trying to check out the vehicle. >> police advise to get that car off the road. and if that is not possible, turn on the flashers, stay in

>> reporter: now charges are pending against that 34-year- old driver who was the first one to hit the disabled car as he will face dwi charges. reporting live, cbs2 news. >> thank you. police want to find the driver responsible for the deadly hit and run in the story that the victim was mowed down as you would try to cross the street. live with the very latest. >> reporter: well, we can tell you that they have had extra patrols here since that collision last night and one of the main thoroughfares here in a story that they say that the particular intersection of 21st street and 31st road. 30th road is one of the most dangerous places to cross their street because the driver like the ones that left that man here to die. attempting to retrace the trail of the hit and run driver. that the busy stretch of the

astoria. they are known as the infamous speedway. >> it's fast moving traffic that they will be usually driving over that area. and in no danger, especially because they would have no traffic light or stop sign, no crosswalk no reason for drivers to slow down. obviously that they will hit that pen. >> reporter: they say it is here around 11:00 on wednesday night that the 45-year-old man was crossing when the dark colored car hit him. never stopping, leaving him in the street. that man later pronounced dead at elmhurst hospital.

a cow went up on the sidewalk injuring at least one person. you can see them up on the sidewalk on east eighth street. it happened around 11:00 this morning a woman on the sidewalk is in critical condition after being hit. investigating why they went on the sidewalk. the so-called man in the hat was caught on surveillance camera leaving the airport on foot. they released the video of the suspect walking with the suicide bombers that killed 16 people on the march attacks. the police officer is on administrative leave after the video was posted online showing him throwing a 12-year-old girl on the ground outside the texas middle school.
