dr. taylor joins us along with duncan and minty with tips on how to welcome your pet and make sure there is a smooth transition. >> good morning. >> let's talk about how you make this happen. >> the first thing is to think about what type of dog or cat would fit into your lifestyle. looking at your activity levels for your family and your travel schedule. if you will be home a lot. when you have that figured out, you can reach out to the different rescue organizations. these two are from animal haven. they are currently up for adoption. then you can look through the different dogs and find which one will fit into your home. >> when you have made that decision and you find the perfect pet -- is it necessary to retrain and how do you do that? >> the thing to remember is that a lot of these dogs have gone through a lot in their lives. some more than others. these guys are very sweet animals. they have been uprooted from their permanent homes. they have gone to foster homes.
7:25 am
when you bring them home, you want to start slow and easy. getting them used to the new environment and people. getting to know the behaviors of the dog. also i tell people it can take anywhere between three and six months to see the total personality come, out for the rescues. >> so it may take time before you are feeling comfy and the home. what if you notice the dog is not adapting? >> working with a trainer is a good thing. regardless if that dog is adapting or not, getting the trainer involved helps boost the dog's confidence. and helps build a relationship with your dog or cat. learning the basics -- going to different classes and things like that will help you solidify your relationship. and help the dog so comfortable with you. it builds trust between you and your new pet. >> what if you find that the dog is aggressive? and you may not know the full background.
7:26 am
fear of aggression. is rescue groups do a phenomenal job of figuring out the dog's personalities and if they work well with other dogs and cats. or with children. it takes some time to build them out. it is about building confidence. most of these rescue groups out there do a fabulous job knowing who the pets are and what type of environment to put them into, to help increase the chances of success. >> for someone like me who has kids, do you think rescuing an animal acting as a temporary home, fostering, is a good idea? >> i think fostering is great. there is something called, foster to adopt. you can bring them into your home and see how this particular animal works into your particular environment. do they do well with children? there is a situation called coke -- called, a foster field. a lot of folks find out that these dogs are amazing
7:27 am
and the cats too. they find out that they get the dog or cat and they realize that it really is a positive addition to their family. we are fostering, you are not making the absolute long-term commitment. so if it doesn't work out, you know the rescue group is able to take that particular animal back. and put them into a different place until they find a perfect situation. >> and earlier you talked about -- when they are feeling like part of the family, it is important to visit the vet. >> i think they should visit the veterinarian within the first 10 days of coming home. the reason is -- a lot of the rescue groups do amazing things. they are able to get them healthy and adoptable, but there is also preventative care. so when this particular pet is in your home environment, you have to talk about heartworm prevention, flea patrol and additional vaccines that they don't get when they are in the foster ocean.
7:28 am
checked out. particular animals come in from the rescue groups. sometimes they will have a skin and section -- but they just need another set of hands. a medical evaluation to help them transition. it is also a great time -- i have talked to a lot of foster families on how these pets will enter into the home. i consult them on behavioral issues and help them feel more comfortable making the family member. >> thank you for the information. so many pets looking for forever homes. coming up later in the show, our furry friend finder section at 8:00. be sure to tune in for that with the the humane society of new york. >> such cute dogs. 7:28 a.m. the top stories next. we have more on campaign 2016. >> with the new york primary over a week away, candidates in
