on texas with the same system slamming parts of arkansas. this morning the south is bracing for more wild weather. primary problems. new york heads to the polls one week from today, but not donald trump's own children. why eric and ivanka won't vote for dad next tuesday. new zika fears. u.s. health officials say the virus is scarier than they thought and could cause premature birth and blindness in babies. and calling all cuddlers. if you're looking for a little love and a friendly face, we've got the gig and the goats for you. good morning from the studio 57 news room at cbs headquarters in new york. i'm meg oliver in for anne-marie green. it's another morning of potentially dangerous and destructive thunderstorms across parts of the south. after north texas got pounded by damaging hail. severe thunderstorm watches are posted in northeast texas and

of large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes exists. baseball-size hail plastered north texas late yesterday. some pieces measured more than four inches across. the dallas suburb of wiley. the hail was so powerful, it blasted through roofs. so far just minor injuries are reported. the police station is uninhabitable. the damage is so extensive that the wiley schools will be closed today. lightning triggered a fire that destroyed a church in southwest arkansas, and powerful winds toppled trees that fell into homes. one trailer park was hard hit. up to ten homes were damaged. trees and power lines were downed for miles. belgian police announced this morning that two more men

the bombs at the airport and subway station killed 32 people. prosecutors say the men were involved with the rental of a safe house used by those who carried out the attacks. now to politics. and the fix is in according to donald trump. trump complaining about his delegate woes railed against the nominating process he says is rigged. both trump and democrat hillary clinton are looking for big wins in next week's new york primary. don champion is here in new york. don, good morning. >> yeah, good morning, meg. they definitely need big wins here on their home turf next week, ahead of a critical debate on thursday, hillary clinton has been on the attack against bernie sanders, and donald trump yet again has set his crosshairs on his party's entire presidential nominating process. >> get them out of here. get them out. >> reporter: during a rowdy campaign stop in new york's capital city, donald trump railed against his party's so-called rigged delegate system. >> i end up winning louisiana,

done, i find out i get less delegates than this guy that got his [ bleep ] kicked, okay? give me a break. >> reporter: rnc chair reince priebus defended the nomination process in a tweet last night, saying in part, the rules were set last year. nothing mysterious. nothing new. trailing far behind trump in new york, cruz has shifted his attention to california where he says the gop nomination will be decided. during the rally, he mocked trump's delegate complaints. >> donald, 65,000 people voted in the state of colorado. they just didn't vote for you. they voted for our campaign. >> reporter: on the democratic side, hillary clinton maintains a double-digit lead in new york over bernie sanders. monday she continued to attack the vermont senator on gun control. >> he voted for the law that tells gun manufacturers and sellers they have special immunity. >> reporter: a win in new york could be a game changer for

>> on april 19th, new york can make history. >> reporter: despite winning 8 of the last 9 nominating contests, sanders still trails clinton in the overall delegate count. and it has certainly been a long and dramatic race for the white house so far, and americans apparently are not impressed. a new associated press poll shows at least half of americans say they would be disappointed or even angry if either of the current front-runners are nominated. by the way, meg, in case you needed some reminding, there are 210 days left until the general election in november. >> all right. don champion here in new york for us, thank you. this morning the clinton campaign is taking heat for a racially charged joke. saturday night clinton made a surprise visit to an annual new york city dinner for the press, lobbyists and lawmakers. she appeared in a skit with new york city mayor bill de blasio

clinton chided de blasio for his late endorsement. >> sorry, hillary, i was running on c.p. time. >> i don't like jokes like that, though. >> cautious politician time. >> c.p. time is reference to the stereotype colored people time. members of the audience cringed. last night de blasio said it was all part of a scripted event, and people are missing the point. just two of donald trump's oldest children will be able to vote for him in tuesday's republican primary in new york. neither ivanka trump nor eric trump registered with the republican party in time. trump says they feel very, very guilty, but it's fine. coming up on "cbs this morning," gop presidential candidate ohio governor john kasich joins us to talk about his strategy as he heads towards this summer's republican convention. more than 400 protesters

at the u.s. capitol. the demonstrators belonged to a group called democracy spring. they were against the influence of money in politics and oppose restrictive voter registration laws. yesterday was the first day of what's expected to be a week of protests. scarier than first thought, that's what top u.s. health officials are saying about the zika virus this morning. despite that, leaders are warning they don't have enough money to stop the spread here in the state. >> reporter: federal health officials are growing more concerned about the zika virus. >> everything we look at with this virus seems to be a bit scarier than we initially thought. >> reporter: the biggest concern is for pregnant women and their babies. the virus is linked to microcephaly which causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads. and now other complications such as prematurity and eye problems. >> the virus is likely to be a problem at much of the pregnancy period, not just probably the

>> reporter: so far 346 cases of zika have been reported, all related to travel. 32 were pregnant women. 7 were sexually transmitted. and one person developed a rare illness of the nervous system. scientists in brazil are also investigating a link between zika and another brain disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord in adults similar to multiple sclerosis. health officials are hoping the white house can help pressure congress to free up the $1.9 billion in emergency funds requested more than two months ago. right now about $500 million left over from the ebola fight is being used. >> it is not enough for us to get the job done. stopgap. >> reporter: the mosquitoes that spread zika are now present in 30 states, not just the 12 originally believed. >> while we absolutely hope we don't see widespread local transmission in the continental u.s., we need the states to be ready for that.

former new orleans saints player will smith is also being charged with shooting smith's wife. smith was shot in the back saturday night during what police say was an act of road rage. police say cardell hayes rear-ended smith's suv. then the two men confronted each other. hayes is being held on a million dollars bail and charged with second-degree murder. his lawyer says he'll be vindicated. coming up on the "morning news," a lawmaker's apology. a north carolina representative admits he made a mistake supporting the so-called bathroom law. and the case of the hungry burglar. a suspect is caught on video fixing himself a meal at a five guys restaurant. this is the "cbs morning news." thinking about what to avoid, where to go... and how to deal with my uc. to me, that was normal. until i talked to my doctor. she told me that humira helps people like me

"the washington post" is reporting new details about the navy officer accused of spying. edward lin was born in taiwan and is a naturalized u.s. citizen. he's accused of passing secrets to taiwan or china. he is also charged with patronizing a prostitute. lin served on navy intelligence-gathering planes. "the seattle times" reports that body parts found in a city recycling bin may be those of a missing woman. the mother of three vanished friday night after a date with someone she met online. a suspect is in custody. police say they tracked him through social media posts. "the salt lake tribune" reports the restoration of utah's plan on polygamy. the court decision was a defeat

the tv show "sister wives." state prosecutors don't charge concepting adults in plural marriages, but attorneys say the laws are needed to go after those who commit crimes related to polygamy. "the dallas morning news" reports the hunt for a suspect who stole a ring from a dead woman's finger. surveillance video from an odessa funeral home shows the woman reaching into the casket last week. police say the ring is just a cheap bauble, but the deceased woman's family called the crime disrespectful. "the fayetteville observer" reports a new jersey legislator who says he was wrong to vote for a restrictive new law. the law limiting legal protections for lesbians, gays demonstrations yesterday at the state capitol. in an op-ed, democratic representative billy richardson says instead of recognizing the right to be free of discrimination based on one's sexual orientation, hb2 gives a green light to this

securities leading up to the 2008 financial crisis. the government accused goldman sachs of falsely assuring investors the securities it sold were sound when it knew they were full of mortgages that were likely to fail. the deal includes no criminal sanctions or penalties. the union representing some 40,000 workers at the telecommunications giant verizon authorized a strike starting tomorrow. verizon supplies local phone and internet service to millions on the east coast and cell phone service throughout verizon wireless. the workers want a new contract to increase pay, limit outsourcing and improve working conditions. their contract expired in august. tesla motors is recalling 2700 model "x" suvs because a rear seat defect. tesla's own tests indicate the third row could snap forward in a crash. the recall involves suvs made before march 26th and sold in the united states. customers shouldn't use the third row in that seat until it

ticketmaster will begin selling tickets on facebook later this month. you'll be able to place your ticketmaster order by clicking on a new buy tickets link. facebook will take a cut for each ticket sold, but ticketmaster says the convenience fees will remain the same. the new starbucks rewards program starts today with starbucks rewards, users will earn two stars for every dla spent. starbucks acknowledged if you buy only one beverage or pastry at a time, it might take longer to get a free reward. and the fastest-growing low-cal beer in the united states is from mexico. tecate light owned by heineken is riding a surge in popularity for mexican beers. corona dominates the import market. modelo especial is the fastest growing overall. by 2003, mexico was the world's most prolific beer exporter. meg. >> jill wagner at the new york stock exchange, thank you.

a teen girl is recovering this morning after being saved at sea by the u.s. coast guard. she was kayaking in the gulf of mexico sunday when she drifted away from her family. hours later, the coast guard crew spotted her drifting around the gulf and pulled her to safety. the 17-year-old told rescuers the wake from a nearby boat caused her to lose her paddle. the golden state warriors
