good afternoon. i'm mary calvi. >> and i'm chris wragge. >> we begin with breaking news on long island. a young woman killed while walking a dog. it happened after a driver lost control and crashed. cbs 2's emily smith is live in east islip with details. emily? >> reporter: good afternoon. that's right. look behind me can see all -- you can see all the damage from the pole. we are told a 25-year-old girl was walking her dog when she was killed. i just spoke to her aboutest friend and she said he had just put her son on the school bus, and was walking her dog. we are not sure if the pole killed the 25-year-old or the impact from the car. but we know the 25-year-old who was walking her dog has died. and she had a young son. and the woman driving the car, it may have been a medical

but that has not officially been confirmed. and she was taken to south side hospital. again, we are in touch with family and friends, with we'll bring you the latest tonight at 5:00. we are live in islip, emily smith, cbs 2 news. >> all right, emily. thank you. a deadly stabbing this morning in manhattan. a 22-year-old man was fatally stabbed in front of his girlfriend. cbs 2's magdalena is live where police have more. >> that's right, chris. new developments right now. police have a person in custody, as you mentioned that, person is a coworker of the victim's girlfriend. police do not believe that this attack was random. detectives spent the morning searching under cars weapon. each climbing construction scaffolding. >> they just told used, we can't get on the job site right now. they're looking for a knife.

murder jose vares. he was walking up third avenue between 94th and 95th street, with his 20-year-old 20-year- old girlfriend after work. they were approached by a suspect who police believe may have known the couple. a loud argument and a fight broke out. olivares was stabbed multiple times in the chest. his girlfriend was not hurt and nothing was stolen. investigators say the armed attacker then ran southbound, down third avenue. >> the couple hailed a cab to metropolitan hospital. where the 22-year-old man died this morning. nancy cabrero is the principal of ps198 across the street from the scene. this morning's murder investigation, too close for comfort. >> i have fifth graders and fourth graders that are coming to school by themselves. and they should be able to feel safe, walking to their community school. >> reporter: now, police say that the victim and his girlfriend had a 2-year-old

again, police have a person in custody. that person works with the victim's girlfriend. live on the upper east side, magdalena daris, cbs 2 news. >> magdalena, thank you. inaudible inaudible -- [ inaudible ] criminal endangerment and possession of controlled substance. dime and her daughter were found unresponsive inside their home, easter 2015, along with two suicide notes. an autopsy found benadryl, morphine and valium in the girl's sister. dons had a history of drug and alcohol addiction. brian galvez is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old female student. investigators say the sexual relationship began last october.

family member who contacted police. galvez worked at the latin dance company in bayshore. he is free on $100,000 bond. now to campaign 2016, with new york's presidential primary, just one week away. most of the candidates are spending these final days here, trying to earn every vote they did can. janelle burrell joins us now. >> reporter: there are 291 delegates up for grabs on the democratic side. but despite that fact, hillary clinton and donald trump are ahead by double digits. their opponents are trying to get every delegate they can have. >> john kasich would have to get every single one of the delegates in order to clinch the nomination. but he said the odds aren't stopping him. >> i'm not really frustrated about anything. it's just a road. you put one foot in front of the other.

second in new york polls, ahead of the new york primaries. but still more than 30 points behind donald trump n. overall polling, he's third behind trump and ted cruz. he's hoping for a brokered convention. but the front runner is doing all he can to avoid that scenario. >> reporter: trump in albany, courting upstate voters, also griping about the republican nomination process and ted cruz, who cruised a victory in colorado over the weekend. >> it's a rigged, disgusting, dirty system. >> reporter: if the convention is contested, crew -- cruz could gain where donald trump won in the primaries. >> it's going to be a battle in cleveland to see who can earn the majority of delegates. >> reporter: hillary clinton started the morning in manhattan, speaking at a pay quality round table.

[ applause ] so i am very happy to be with you. >> reporter: clinton still holding a double-digit lead over bernie sanders. >> this is the political revolution. >> reporter: the vermont senator continued his swing across upstate new york today in rochester. in the last two weeks, two out of three national polls had us ahead. >> well, this morning, hillary clinton picked up another endorsement. this time, new york city council's jewish caucus. they're backing clinton over sanders who himself is jewish. later today, kasich, sanders and donald trump, all spending the rest of the day here in new york, with voters. mary? >> janelle burrell. thank you. police in seattle arrested the man in the gruesome murder of a mother of three he met online. 40-year-old ingram lem has been

having a date with someone she met online. a homeowner called police after finding body parts in a plastic bag in a recycling bin. >> i almost got sick. i just talked to her. >> justice for ingrid. no one deserves this. no one. >> on monday, police arrested 37-year-old john charlotteon. investigators are looking to see if he is linked to other crimes. now to a link on the paris attacks. three more have been detained in connection with the november attacks. belgian officials say the three were detained following the search in brussels. a judge will determine if they will stay in custody. meanwhile, two people have been charged in connection with the brussels attack. belgian prosecutors say the two men, identified only as male abraham.

on saturday but found no weapons or explosives investigators believe the same person was belined both attacks. a shooting death. of former new orleans saints player, will smith. what appears to be a hummer and mercedes. the video captures the hummer, driven by hayes, apparently stopping and get bumped by smith. the two stopped for a moment before the driver of the mercedes suv swerves and speeds away. police say they cannot confirm the possible hit-and-run before the shooting. but detectives are looking into it. that's part of the investigation. much more ahead on cbs 2 news at noon. workers at a major phone and cable company are threatening a walkout. wild weather. hail, the size of softball, batters homes and cars. we'll check out the path of destruction. and kid cuddlers wanted. why these baby goats need special attention. all right, kids, we are going to see some changes.

new york. the red robin bandit has been charged with 18 robberies. he turned himself in after admitting to vandalizing donsen -- dozens of rend light -- red light cameras. last year, ruth was arrested for disabling cameras. suffolk police commissioner, timothy city spoke with the case earlier today. >> you have the right to express yourself. you have the right to disagree with certain public policy. and you have the right to protest. but you do not have the right to violate the law and destroy public property. >> ruth was also charged with cutting down a pole last january remember. >> verizon, land line phone and cable workers could be headed for a strike. union workers threatening a walkout tomorrow if the company doesn't agree to a new contract. the unions say verizon wants to layoffs easier. issues that need to be

the last verizon strike was five years ago. it lasted two weeks. hundreds were rescued off the coast. overcrowded boat, trying to cross the mediterranean sea monday. rescuers pull people, one by one, to prevent the boat from tipping over. more than 18,000 people were brought to various ports in sicily. dangerous weather hammered the south. cleanup is under way after a storm ripped through northern texas. hail the size of golf ball pelted the area, leaving a long path of destruction. cbs 2's omar villafranca reports. punishing everything in its path. a ferocious storm system pounded north texas monday. torrential hail. and winds near 70 miles per hour. prompted tornado warnings and pummeled homes and businesses, as more than 10,000 people lost power. >> it's just incredible. i've never been through anything like this before. >> here in wily, you could hear

as massive hailstones pierced through the winds of this home. no one inside was hurt. emergency services were so overwhelmed, people were told to call 911, only if they faced a life-threatening situation. >> where do i begin? >> parts of tim taylor's home are ripped to shreds. >> that's more glass falling. >> reporter: in texarkana, arkansas, strong winds sent trees crashing into homes. >> when i looked up, boom. and there was a tree in my house. bill story and his wife barely escaped injury. >> i heard of hail. i said, oh, lord, just protect us from those trees. i didn't start praying soon enough. [ laughter ] >> reporter: there were no reports of major injuries. but the schools here in wiley did take a beating. classes are canceled today for students, so crews can start

a farmer's facebook ad for help goes viral. looking for a few cuddlers for baby goats. >> chip reid explains why the job is really important. >> reporter: at the paramount goat cheese farm in southern virginia, this is the time when baby goats run wild. and the handful of employees are run ragged. about 100 goats were born here in less than two weeks. desperate for help, owner gail hobbs-page advertised for volunteer baby goat cuddlers. she wasn't expecting much. so far, they've had over 2,000 responses from all ages. one of ashley eckle's daughters found a match, made in goat heaven. >> what is your goat's name? >> stella. >> and what's your name?

>> reporter: >> that's special. >> reporter: volunteers are calling from as far away as california and australia. >> are you surprised by the response? >> oh, yeah. and we are dazzled and sometimes dazed. >> reporter: she said there is a purpose to cuddling baby goats when's. >> ? >> when they become milkers other cheese operation, they're easier to handle. if we don't didn't do this on some level, you couldn't get your hands on them. they just run away. >> reporter: chip reid, cbs news, esmont, virginia. >> add to the cuddler list. hobbs said she thinks the cuddlers may need the cuddling as much as the baby goats. talk about a guy who needs a hug. johnny elliott. people are hating me. it's chilly, raw. but we are season changes. i know somebody who loves wragge.

the city and 45. 53 in babylon. but 43 in monticello. that's about your spread. 50 in belmar. without exception, it's a little or a lot cooler than it was yesterday. i wish the rain had helped out with the pollen count. it's still pretty high today. and it's going to stay high tomorrow, thursday and friday. it's the season. it's tree pollen. you just have to gear up, talk to your doctor, and make sure you're ready for it. >> light rain now. this will fill in. this is going to continue its journey. the heaviest rain right now, into parts of the north fork point. and down through the hamptons as well. and then there's a little light rain, still duchess county, into parts of putnam and connecticut. but there's that big ridge of high pressure. models have it clearing. then they're also picking up on more sun, into the afternoon, too. a few leftover showers for the east end. through 4:00, 5:00. and then we clear out. but it's a shifting wind.

produce market with your tip of the day. >> reporter: hi, everybody. today, we're going to talk about fiddle head ferns. they're one of those produce items that have a very, very small window. when you see them, grab them. let's talk about the selection in storage. these are fiddle head ferns. they are a little psychadelic looking. but they are delicious. you want to make sure these spirals here are very, very tight coil. make sure they're nice and green. if they start to decay, remember, it has a short life span, in the ground and out of the ground too. when you bring these thome, keep -- these home, keep them cool and only for a short period of time when you use them. when it comes to preparation, they're actually extremely easy to prepare. make sure you wash them thoroughly. wash them about two or three times before you use them. if you have bacon, get out the fat. and you want to saute these quickly. and add lemon and black pepper. that acid will cut through the
