a nice end to the weekend. coming up, we will talk about warmer weather to kick kickoff the works -- the work week. breaking news. a deadly shooting. >> several police officers were sent to the hospital and one person dead. the family of the victim is demanding answers. we're live from south ozone park queens with the story. >> good morning. family members are saying the man that was fatally shot by police is 32-year-old george tillman. a father of five. they say this man is innocent. but police say the suspect was approached by officers early this morning. he ran away and then turned around and pointed a firearm at police. >> this is the gun that police say the suspect was carrying when he was shot by officers. the scene sprawled out over 116 avenue and 135 street in the

-- of queens. you can see what may appear to be a gun on the ground. according to the nypd, the suspect was running from police when he turned back, firearm in hand. it is unknown if he fired the weapon or how many times he was shot by officers before being taken to jamaica hospital where he died around 1:30 a.m. this morning. you can hear the calls for more officers over the dispatcher radio. >> police say this incidents only involved one suspect. no others are really important injured. the family of the man shot came to jamaica hospital. they say they need to know how and why this happened. >> we need answers. a loving father and husband. very good family member. >> police say four officers were taken to a local hospital

they were not injured in this incident. the investigation is ongoing. a live -- live in south ozone park, cbs2 news. the death toll in ecuador stands at 77 and is expected to rise after the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in decades. the epicenter of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake is along the south american country's central coast. >> this video was captured inside of a supermarket inside the capital city which is more than 100 miles away from the epicenter. the earthquake flattened buildings and buckled highways yesterday. the port cities reportedly suffered the brunt of the damage. the sin on the warning center says that there are tsunamis possible for the coast. residents are urged to move to higher ground. now to the latest on another deadly earthquake in japan. thousands of rescue workers are

two powerful earthquakes in the southwestern part of the country have killed at least 41 people. the second play, a magnitude 7.3, damaged more than 1000 buildings and triggered mudslides that have swept away entire bridges and buried highways. back at home, police released surveillance videos of a slashing suspect. they say around 3:30 a.m. yesterday, a 23-year-old man was walking with a female companion in the bronx. they say the suspect seen here wearing an eye patch at the time approached and said something to them that they could not understand. the suspect allegedly cut the man in the face with an unknown object before taking off. the victim was treated and released from the hospital. the investigation continues into a slashing attack on a cab driver in queens by a man who may have also been involved in a murder at a homeless shelter. >> police have released a looking for. 53-year-old william smith. dave carlin has the story from elmhurst. >> these photos show some of

year-old deliver -- cabdriver manuel vera. he was dropping off a passenger thursday morning expected to get his $10 fare but the man became violent. >> instead of paying, he pulled out a knife and slashed body. his throat, arms and back. >> this is the spokesman of the new york state federation of taxi drivers. he says all cabbies and the public should watch out for this man wanted by police. 53-year-old william smith. police say smith could be connected not only to the cabbie attack but also a murderer the day before. police say friday morning, inside this homeless shelter in manhattan, 56-year-old shelter resident marcus guerrero was found dead in his bed with a wire around his neck. >> investigators say the clues to possibly link the two crimes include items they found. a

the injured cabbie spoke to the car company soon after he was released from the hospital. >> he went through a really hard situation. he is alive. it is a miracle. >> nervous taxi drivers and nervous residents at the shelter insist on action. they say without better safeguards and more security cameras and panic buttons, they could be in grave danger. >> there is no security work anybody can come and go as they please. everyman fends for himself. >> officers described the manhunt as intense. they say they want to get the suspect off the streets before he can strike again. street fairs are supposed to bring in big crowds. but a new jersey restaurant owner says it is bad for business. >> it is bad for business -- not just mine but everybody else's. >> there is a battle brewing in tenafly. why a man says his customers are getting ran away. and candidates are still

getting a little closer between bernie and hillary. how do you think that plays out tuesday? >> they are a little closer. right now, she is still out by double digits. the thing to watch -- if hillary clinton loses new york, that will be huge news. she is still well ahead and the pledged delegates. the goal for bernie sanders is to find a way to shrink the lead that she has got. we will see how close he gets in new york. a win will be big. he probably has energy for his movement to continue going forward. but the math is still daunting. and hillary clinton wins new york, it will be even more so. >> on the republican side, donald trump talked about the system being rigged. is that catching on with voters? how does that play into tuesday going forward? >> it is catching on among his voters. it is not a small group. basically what he is doing is trying to increase the pain

he does not get the magical number of delegates that he needs. donald trump wants to make it very painful for the party to allow anybody but donald trump to be the nominee. and so he keeps talking about the system being rigged, so that any outcome that that doesn't favor him will be seen as a theft. a ceiling of his delegates. the question is, what can the party do about that? it looks like no matter what the outcome, whether he is the nominee or not, there will be a lot of disappointed people coming out of the convention. >> thank you. you can catch john in a full hour of face the nation later this morning at 10:30 a.m. right here on cbs2. pope francis is, the vatican this morning along with some extra passengers that he brought back with him. from a trip to greece. the pontiff flew 12 syrian bus on support his plane after his emotional visit. the island he went to has been on the frontlines of the new

eastern half of the u.s. stays dry. the midsection of the country getting a walloping. it will not be easy over the next 24, 48 hours. it will not make much progress east. so those of you that had impact yesterday will likely have impacts again today. expecting extensive flooding through oklahoma and texas as this line explodes later today and into the day tomorrow. eight up to 12 inches of rain for some very localized spots. that is not out of the realm of possibility. in portions of southeastern texas. we will likely be seeing some unfortunate video from that region of the country as we go into the late afternoon and tomorrow morning. for us, nothing but blue skies. a lot of sunshine. seventy-two, the high in the city. and 74, moorestown. as we look closer to the coastline, we're talking 60s. even 58 in montauk.

to jamaica hospital. they say they need to know how and why this happen. a cop shot an innocent person. a loving father and husband. >> the family of george tillman say he is a father of five and was not known to carry a firearm. police are still investigating on the scene. cbs2 knows -- news. fire broke out at a three- story private home in brooklyn. the call came in shortly before midnight last night into 1600th block us -- of new york avenue in flatbush. the fire was brought under control. no injuries or word on how it started. another fire. this one in essex county, new jersey where a man is being called a hero this morning for his quick actions. he spoke exclusively to cbs2.

>> smoke billowing up into the air. firefighters say flames erupted on the second floor of a vacant unit. this good samaritan, roy campbell, works at a car repair shop behind the building and was the first to see the smoke. >> i looked up and the flames were this big. >> that is not all. when he noticed part of the roof collapsed, he risked his life and ran inside the burning building. >> i went running. the back of the building was falling in. the roof was falling in. i said, somebody has to be inside. i ran around the corner. i opened the door and yelled, everybody out. >> and everybody did get out, safe and sound, including a woman who grabbed her two daughters and ran as fast as they could. >> we realized that someone was screaming that the building is on fire.

i had no shoes. >> the mayor of bloomfield was on the scene. he says two, six family buildings were damaged in the fire. he says he will also make sure that roy campbell is honored for his selfless act. but he says, he is no hero. >> no. just hanging in there. >> the red cross is assisting six families displaced by the fire. no word on what caused it. two young children scene wandering the streets of queens are back home safe after a frightening ordeal. surveillance video captured one of the siblings in the middle of the street yesterday morning at 145th and 123rd in jamaica. police say the grandmother had been looking after the 2-year- old and 3-year-old but fell asleep. i looked up and the girl was crying profusely. she is all soaking wet with your and -- urine. >> i'm very upset that it happen.

>> the mother says she found her children in an ambulance after coming home from an overnight shift. two other neighbors say a couple weeks earlier, the children had to be rescued from the very same intersection. police say there will be no criminal charges. a man who fell from a hotel window on the upper west side remained hospitalized this morning. the hotel is on west 94th street. the man fell from a hallway window from either the eight or 104. the 29-year-old checked into the hotel thursday. please do not know if he fell accidentally or if he was pushed where he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. the nypd says a gun buyback connected in queens yesterday was a success. the police released a photograph of 85 working firearms that were turned in, in exchange for $200 prepaid credit cards, no questions asked. there is no number to the limit of firearms that can be surrender. but people are limited to three gift cards. the gun buyback program aims to get illegal and unwanted weapons weapons

safety department confirmed a hacking attack aimed at the police department. they say the virus-infected several computers last week. the department director says there was no indication that information was compromised or lost. he says the department's it employees were quickly able to install safeguards. and could you soon be enjoying a boozy brunch? changes to this sunday blues. >> have you ever gone to brunch and you have been told that the mimosa or bloody mary you have been dreaming of all night -- you can't have it until noon? >> i was like, what? you can serve before 12:00? >> you can't wake up without a mimosa or bloody mary on a sunday. >> it is the law in new york state. between 4:00 a.m. and noon on sunday, no booze at brunch. >> it is a little disappointing. i think of brunch around the hour of 11:00.

this happened in the republic of georgia yesterday. several cars and houses were damaged. so far no reports of injuries. the tax deadline is looming. you have until tomorrow to file your state and federal tax returns. if you ask for an extension, you are in good company. the irs says 13.5 million people are expected to request one. it is an extension to file, not to pay what you might owe. the payment has to be postmarked by april 18 or you could face penalties. also tomorrow, security will be extra tight at the boston marathon. 5000 uniformed and plain clothing police officers will be looking along -- working along the course. have a million people are expected to cheer on 30,000 runners that will raise tomorrow on patriot day. it has been three years since the bombing of the finish line left three people dead and more than 200 others injured. it is springtime. don't tell that to colorado residents. they are dealing with major

more snow on the way. this could continue to fall through tomorrow. the same weather system is causing dangerous conditions in texas. take a look at this funnel cloud in kent county. severe thunderstorms are expected in that area. >> could you imagine if we have that kind of snow here now? people might revolt. >> i was worried. here we are in april -- but vanessa has great news. >> yes. we don't see any potential for snow. really all the way through april. and even into may. >> like the winter is over. >> hopefully the last cold snap was this last week. now we're just talking about warmer weather from here on out. unseasonably warm today and tomorrow. let's start with our weather watchers. and see where we are now.

up very nicely as we look up very nicely as we look across the region. most of us, in the 40s. we see some 50s out there as well. 50 degrees in north plainfield, new jersey under sunny skies. and they say the temperature has risen 13 degrees and the last hour. and the warming trend will continue, taking most of us into the low 70s today. closer to the coast, expect highs to be in the 60s. live outside right now, beautiful picture of central park. the grass is so beautifully green right now. i love it. bright skies and 49 are the current conditions at central park. calm wind. that will stay the course today. the sunny stretch does continue with temperatures in the 70s. today, slightly cooler by the coast. tomorrow, how does 80 sound? not everybody will hit 80 in the city before forecasting 78. i do anticipate and one spot to have 80-degree highs.

we are just consistently seeing these right blue skies with zero moisture falling. this will eventually change. but not anytime soon. monday night into tuesday, we have a shot at wet weather. what it is also doing is basically creating a wall, keeping this area of low pressure through the midsection of the country. and creating all sorts of problems. you saw the snow into colorado. you saw the funnel cloud down in texas. all of these problems will be repeated today. and flooding will also becomes a major concern as we go through the next 48 hours for our friends in texas. for this -- for us, a super dry sunday. tomorrow even warmer. wind has more of a westerly component. that will bring temperatures up to nearly 80. overnight monday into tuesday, a cold front will sweep through. it is looking very dry. still likely an early-morning sprinkle for most of us. it looks like the most likely place for that to happen will
