i'm chris wragge. voting day here in new york. >> with the latest on the campaign 2016, cbs 2 news' janelle burrell joins us live from the upper west side. >> reporter: the poll workers say they have had a good turnout so far today. as for the voter, they tell us they are excited. for the first time in decade, new york could be a turning point during this primary season and right now, it's the new yorkers who are the favorites to win. the lines to vote this morning telling of what a contentious fight the battle for the empire state has become. >> it's been an extraordinary election. and we're very excited to be voting.

that new yorkers votes are pivotal in a presidential primary and these people want to make sure theirs count. >> we have so many important issues here in the city. >> reporter: the new york candidates casting their votes as well. hillary rodham clinton with the former inspect tow. clinton knows she needs to win here in new york and win big in order to win the democratic nomination. >> i hope everybody gets out to vote. >> i think right now she's the only person on the political scene who is qualified to take over from mr. obama. >> reporter: bernie sanders counting on a big turnout as well, still lagging about 10 points behind clinton in the most recent cbs polls. sanders held his finally rally in long island last night. >> this is a movement getting establishment very, very nervous. [ applause ] >> reporter: he's banking on

supreme court house, mag, cbs 2 news -- house, magdalena doris, cbs 2 news. a school bus driver has been selling heroin. he was caught selling the drug on the street monday night. he is charged with possession of a control substances. one person was hurt after a van jumped the curb and crashed into a bagel store in new jersey. chopper 2 flew over the scene this morning. the accident happened just after 8:00 a.m. a pedestrian was struck by the vehicle. the extent of the injury is unknown. a man is under arrest in connection with the campus scare that led to a lockdown at suny purchase in westchester. investigators say it started at a student event sunday night. students were told to stay in place as police flooded the campus looking for a possible armed man. charges are penning against the 24-year-old. at least 28 people are dead, more than 300 injured after a deadly attack in afghanistan's capitol city.

broke out at a government security compound after a suicide bomber blew up a truck full of explosives. police say an armed militant stormed the agency after the blast and the taliban claimed responsibility for the coordinated assault. the police chief said, the suicide bomber tried to get into the building but our officers shot and killed him. afghan security forces say they gunned down the second attacker after a two-hour battle. more than three dozen people, mostly civilian, died in the injured. he says he tried to run but was hit in the leg and couldn't stop the bleeding. the attack happened just a mile from the u.s. embassy at the height of morning rush hour. the assault on the government agency similar to the u.s. secret service comes just days after taliban insurgents announced the start of their spring offensive. cbs 2 news.

from around the world are now in ecuador trying to find survivors from this weekend's devastating earthquake. more than 400 people were killed and the number is expected to rise. cbs 2 news reports. >> reporter: from beneath the rubble, a sign of life, this hand belongs to a man trapped under a flattened shopping center in ecuador. firefighters pulled him out alive along with two other women on monday. they were wedged between a floor and a roof for more than 32 hours following the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake. i felt that she was alive said the husband of one of the survivors. here, rescuers worked to free a man trapped under a collapsed hotel. as news of another survivor spread, dozens of people rushed to the scene. we spotted this woman, she looked helpless. it was her husband who was stuck. he had called her on his cellphone from under neither the rubble. he's alive but trapped, she

a thief pulls a fast one at a brooklyn burger joint. it's all caught on camera. crook for several blocks. he took off with a tip jar. police say the suspect asked to use the restroom at action burger and then on the way out, he grabbed the jar of money turned. the 22-year-old chased him for nearly four blocks. she says she never gave it a second thought. money. i had money from the previous day so there was a decent amount. i was like, if i catch him, going to fight him. i was so -- i was just ready for it. >> there have been so many tip jar thefts in this part of brooklyn, many businesses have decided to put the jars behind the counter where they are harder to reach. fans and friends are remembering veteran actress doris roberts who died in los angeles over the weekend. she is best known from the hit cbs sitcom "everybody loves raymond."
