[ inaudible ] >> i wish i could undo what happened.

this was an act of criminal negligence. as such, i find that incarceration is not necessary. >> reporter: the conviction was reduced to criminally negligence homicide. liang got five years' probation at 800 hours of community service. roughly five months' worth. his supporters insist he never should have been charged but were generally pleased. >> do you feel the irony here that two demonstrations here, both of them from opposite sides, both of them with demanding justice? both of them. they are opposite sides of each other. >> reporter: did you get justice today? >> yes. >> va ken thompson says he will appeal the judge's decision to reduce that conviction. the charge after criminally negligence homicide at which point the judge would have to revisit the sentence he pronounced today. has a look at what we're working on for cbs 2 news at 6:00. cbs 2 news. now to campaign 2016. it's primary day in new york. donald trump and hillary clinton didn't have any trouble caster their votes near their homes today and

we have live team coverage tomorrow. tony aiello with the democrats and marcia kramer with the republican. steve langford has been talking to frustrated voters. >> reporter: amid widespread reports of people having trouble voting today, the city controller wants to know why is it alleged that $125,000 people removed from the voter rolls? why did 60,000 voters get notices that didn't have the proper primary date on them? why have people been told they were voting in the wrong place? finally were some polling places locked? gentleman there's no other agency like the board of elections in the world or in the united states where politicians from both parties come together and run it likes it's a back hall political club. we are going to have huge turnout in november and they

know how they will handle a general election. >> reporter: a statement late this afternoon from mayor de blasio saying in part, quote, we support the comptroller's audit and urge its completion well in advance of the june election so corrective action can be taken. these errors today indicate that additional major reforms will be needed to the board of elections and in the state law governing it. also late today attorney general snyderman reporting his officer received a high number of complaints about problems voting today. steve langford, cbs 2 news. now to the candidates. republican front-runner donald trump is hoping to win big here in his hometown. cbs 2 political reporter marcia kramer is live at trump tower in midtown with more. marcia. >> reporter: kristine, we are on fifth avenue outside trump tower where the donald trump mystique is attracting all kinds of people. there are his supporters and the tourists like these people

there are plenty of cops. but when he voted earlier today, he seemed pretty awed by it all. >> it's a proud moment. it's a great moment. and who would have thought? >> reporter: by all accounts donald trump has thought about running for president for years. but after casting his vote for himself naturally, he talked about his motives. >> we're a country with tremendous problems. and we are going to make america great again. >> reporter: trump is over the 50% mark in all new york polls. but he needs a majority of voters in each of the state's 27 congressional districts to win all 95 delegates here. trump has 755 delegates now and he needs 1,237 to wrap up the nomination without a floor fight. ted cruz, who had no appearances today is breathing down his back and has won the last four contests. but he won't get delegates in new york. john kasich is another story. he campaigned aggressively here and is hoping to win at least a dozen delegates. >> it's all about accumulating delegates going into the convention because now

we're actually going to go to a competitive convention. >> reporter: the candidates are now all going to move on to other states. next tuesday, there are votes in connecticut, pennsylvania, delaware and maryland. and i should point out that the polls have donald trump leading in all four states. live outside trump tower, i'm marcia kramer, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. now let's switch over to tony aiello who is covering the democrats live at clinton election night headquarters in midtown. tony. >> reporter: tonight secretary clinton is looking to recover from a bit of a rough patch. bernie sanders has won 7 of the last 8 democratic nominating contests. the vermont senator making a very strong effort here in new york and dramatically cutting into hillary clinton's lead in the polls. she was up by 40 points a few month ago. the brooklyn-born vermont senator made a last pitch for new york support during a walk through midtown with his wife.

he has already turned his focus to pennsylvania which votes next week. in erie he railed against corporate greed. >> the greed of wall street and large multinational corporations has basically said, we have no responsibility to the average worker. >> reporter: secretary clinton started her day voting for herself in westchester county. then a quick trip to dc for a speech to construction trades unions. >> here's my promise to you. if i'm fortunate enough to become your president, organized labor will always have a champion in the white house. [ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: so a hard-fought contest in 2016 but democrats don't seem too bitter. exit polling asked, has the campaign energized or divided you party? 68% of new york democrats said it has energized the party.

cbs 2 news. >> we are just getting exit poll information. cbs news reports the most important issue among both democrats and republicans is the economy. 64% of those polled also want the next president to come from outside politics. do stay with cbs 2 and cbsnewyork.com for continuing coverage throughout the evening. also, tune in tonight at 11:00 for live coverage of the result. other news tonight now. brush fires in new jersey causing problems with the commute tonight. the thick smoke was visible for miles this afternoon. drivers on the turnpike saw the fire burning in secaucus. firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to buildings but about 100 acres were scorched and because of the fire there are still delays on nj transit and amtrak for 30 minutes. lonnie quinn will have details on the continued fire danger coming up. the growing new york city corruption scandal begs a scary question, where are the

the streets due to this alleged bribe be scandal? dave carlin reports. >> reporter: getting the legal right to carry a gun in new york city if you're not a cop is exceedingly rare and only a few thousand are granted every year. mostly to business owners dealing in cash. jewelers an celebrities which is why it's such a shocker 44- year-old alex lichtenstein is charged with bribing nypd officials to get gun permits for people. >> we need to get the guns off the streets. >> there needs to be reform. >> reporter: lichtenstein allegedly breaked he paid out $6,000 rick perry mitt and did it when 150 times. but where are all the illegally permitted guns now? >> unfortunately we're not going to know. >> reporter: at least not in the short term says this retired nypd detective. >> go back for 10 years to see who got permits illegally. >> reporter: investigators

allegedly handled the permits. police say every license they touched will be reviewed and background checks done. will they be able to get all the guns back? we wanted nypd's chief of department james o'neil to answer that when we found him at the scene of an unrelated drug sting. gun corruption probe, anything -- >> we're not talking about anything except -- >> we are concentrating on this now. >> reporter: so no official comment on this case that only came to life after lichtenstein who tried to bribe an honest officer who took it to internal affairs. >> reporter: he allegedly sold a license to a criminal. the top-to-bottom review is early and more arrests will expected. dave carlin, cbs 2 news. >> lichenstein is out of jail on bond of half million dollars. if convicted he faces up to 10 years in prison. is it offensive or art?

is it art or inappropriate? a new jersey art dealer faces thousands of dollars in fines and possibly jail time after displaying an image of a woman's back side and refusing to take it down. cbs 2's meg baker has the controversy now from englewood. >> reporter: they have been here in englewood, new jersey, for more than nine years. the gallery is now suing the city saying it interfered with first amendment rights of freedom of speech. >> i felt violated and why am i being subject to this insanity? >> reporter: back in january she said a code enforcement

[ music ] >> reporter: families say it was going on for a half-hour at a time and that's a violation of the new york city code because ice cream trucks are not allowed to play music while parked. >> it's ridiculous! >> probably going to wake up people in the neighborhood and hard to put kids back to sleep because it's so loud. >> reporter: neighbors say they want to know what they can do to get this noise to stop. so we took this question to the city. the city says, call 311 when you hear the music or report it to the website nyc.gov. there's a section called, noise from an ice cream truck. give the time, location and truck description so inspectors can be dispatched and issue a ticket. so far this year, 279 complaints have been made last year, 1760. have you ever heard an ice cream truck that loud? >> never. never. >> reporter: and even though this loud truck hasn't been a disruption to every family here -- >> it didn't bother me. i love the ice cream music.

no wet weather, maybe up around the cape or so. we had a shower over staten island? no, it was the smoke plume over the fire in jersey city. here's what we find in wet weather. late thursday into friday your day wednesday won't be affected by high pressure. here comes some added clouds that make their push in thursday with rain into friday in the afternoon. wherever you see yellow that's moderate showers even heavy downpours not ruled out. friday mostly pleasant. the only hiccup is late thursday into friday.
